NSURLErrorDomain-1005 when trying to update software

I have twelve MacBooks all running OS X 10.4.11 in my classroom. I need to update them all. SU repeated gives me this:
"A networking error has occurred:
Error NSURLErrorDomain-1005 (-1005).
Make sure you can connect to the
Internet, then try again."
Well, I can connect to the Internet so that isn't the issue. Over lunch, I tried updating my flat panel iMac running 10.4.11 at home, and it worked perfectly. So far, two of the MacBooks have behaved this way. This is not a permissions issue (but yes, I've repaired permissions and checked the disk for failures...nothing turned up). I've deleted plist files and that didn't help. This is not a corrupted disk issue. I've scoured this forum and used Google to try to find an answer, but no one seems to have found a definitive fix for this. Is the only workaround installing the updates manually? That's going to be tough for twelve computers and classes beginning on Monday. Upgrading to Leopard is not an option.
Any suggestions that don't involve repairing permissions?

… does this mean that Software Update is officially fried on these machines from now on?
No. It is just that if you have a dubious connection it is better to do the download under your control and check it properly. There is still the same probability of the connection being dropped, but you can retry, perhaps at a less busy moment.
After manual download, be sure to verify the digest:
Mac OS X: How to Verify a SHA-1 Digest
Mac OS X: About SHA-1 Digest and Software Downloads
(This is done automatically when you use Software Update).

• Can not change AppleID when trying to update software

Hi!
I've bought a Imac and trying to update iPhoto og iMovie, but the software update will not let me use my own AppleID to install the updates. Instead there is shown the AppleID from the shop where I bought the computer. Anyone know the solution to change the AppleIDs?

You need to either delete unnecessary files or move them to an external hard drive.
The updates indicate I wouldn't need nearly that amount of memory why the discrepancy?
Post a screen shot of the updates your are trying to install.  I don't know what would be causing the discrepancy.

I am trying to update the software on my 755p.  I am syncing with a usb.  The sync goes fine when I do a hotsync, but when I try to run the updater for the palm software, it keeps telling me that the "Device Connection Failed."  It tells me to connect the cable, but it is connected and I know it works, cuz I just hotsynced!  very frustrating.  An hour on the phone with Verizon did not help.  I reinstalled the latest Palm Desktop, still no help.  Help??!!

• Error message when trying to update software?!

Just got my Mac Book Pro and am trying to run software updates for:
iTunes (11.0.1),
MacBook Pro (mid 2012) Software Update (10.7.4),
Remote desktop client update (3.6.2)
and Mac OS X 10.7.5
The software downloads and comuter does the restart and loads the staus bar right up then just says: "An unexpected error occured, none of the updates have been installed."
WHAT DO I DO? have tried 4 times with the same result.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
I have seen this problem before. Select only "Mac OS X 10.7.5" to install. I can see that OS X wants to install a 10.7.4 and a 10.7.5 update at the same time, so they can be in conflict and the installation may fail. After installing OS X 10.7.5, the 10.7.4 one shouldn't appear, so install the other updates

• Network Error when trying to update software

I get new software notifications (safari, itunes, Mac os etc) but when I try to install I get the below error.
'A network error has occurred: cannot open file (-3001). Make sure you are connected to the internet and try again'.
The thing is my internet is working fine and I have tried rebooting numerous times but still get the same error. I was able to get round this for the safari update by downloaded directly from the apple website but would really like to get it sorted so I can download all the regular updates.
You advise will be much appreciated

I was having the same issue.... I could connect to the Internet without any problems using Safari, but Software Update could NOT connect, and reported the same network error Chidstar is getting.
I rebooted, tried another user account - nothing helped. Then, I tried again out of sheer desperation an hour later, and Software Update worked!
Now I wonder if it was just timing out too soon on the previous occasion... perhaps due to a slow network connection earlier in the day?
Chidstar - I wonder if deleting your cache files might help? See this note: http://support.apple.com/kb/TA23407?viewlocale=en_US

• Why is my MacBook Pro coming up with an error message when trying to update Software?

I brought my MacBook Pro today and I have been trying to carry out the software updates, there are 9 in total. It takes about half an hour to download them all, then it tells me to restart. Once I have restarted, it then says it is installing the updates. After a minute it comes up with an error message. It then tells me that one or more of the files downloaded are corrupt!! Why is this happening as I have not done anything else with the laptop since I brought it??

Just re-download the updates via Software Update or you can download standalone updaters from support.apple.com/downloads/.
If you are on a slow connection it's probable that caused the corrupt files problem.

• System error when trying to update software

Hi please help me ... why is a system error only comin up when i tryin to install updates for iphoto etc

You do not have enough hard drive space to install all those applications.  Reason why you are unable to install.
You need to first do some serious housekeeping.  So forget what I said previously for the time being.  First things first:  Make room!
================
Empty the trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps.  Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box. Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need.  Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).
Get rid of all your music files you no longer listen too.  Especially, if you already have the actual CDs and/or DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything.  You can even trash directly from Spotlight!
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash.  Better yet, download this neat little shareware app *demo* called AppZapper.  It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete.  Best of all this software is *free*!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs.
Not everyone has the  luxury of purchasing an external HD to store their "stuff, junk, music & photos".
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer *free* storage space.  Most if not all do now-a-days.  I store all 5000+ of my music & 500+ music videos in my ISP storage bin. There are thousands if not millions of *free* storage facilities on the web also.  Use your favorite search engine, to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
Check for duplicate fonts.
Applications>Font Book
Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + *click* to select multiple dotted fonts;
Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts.  Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke.  It does all the work for you.  And, best of all it’s *FREE*.
Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your *current* printer(s)/scanner(s).
HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidentally threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored.  Get rid of some some them.  You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue. You can do this with a *FREE* utility called http://monolingual.sourceforge.netMonolingual.  Another app that apparently does all the work for you.  I’ve never used it.  However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly. However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*.  Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).
Rule of thumb: You should never let your hard drive get to where you have only 10-15% of space left.
====================
After you make room on your HD, try updating from SU again.
For repairing permissions, detailed instructions are in the OS Help menu.
Short version:  Go to Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility and select your volume and then select Repair Permissions.
