NTFS hard disk with AirPort Extreme

Can I plug in a hard disk via USB if the hard disk format is NTFS?

The AirPort Extreme only supports Mac OS Extended, FAT16 and FAT32 drives, not NTFS > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5924

  • Using an external hard drive with Airport Extreme

I'd like to use an external hard drive to store movies and music through my Airport Extreme. The drive is connected to a powered usb hub which is connected to the Extreme. I can see the drive in Airport Utility but I can't figure out how to use it.

    Hi,
I have just tried to set up an Airport Extreme with an external hard drive at home. I have 4 computers connected to the "network" - an iMac, a MacBookPro and 2 x windows machines. A printer is connected wirelessly to the two Macs.
I cannot find the hard drive - I have tried the steps mentioned by Bob Timmons Mar 17 2010, but the only things I see under "Shared" in Finder are the iMac and the printer - not the Airport Extreme (seems odd??), not the windows machines, and most importantly, not the hard drive connected to the USB port on the Airport Extreme.
I therefore expect that the iMac and printer are connected wirelessly and directly, rather than through my network (& I'm happy for the printer to be connected this way, but I do need the PCs and the hard drive all networked).
According to my network connection, (in top bar on the screen) I am definitely connected to the network - yet nothing else shows in finder??
I do, however, see the USB hard Drive when I go into Finder>Applications>Utilities>AirportUtility.app, under my Airport Extreme >Disks. I've also gone through all the set up procedures for "File Sharing."
I have read other posts about formatting the hard drive ether FAT32 or NFTS - is this something I now need to do?? If so, which one should I use, and once I do it, will I then see it?
Presumably, in order to format the Hard Drive, I will need to disconnect it from the Airport Extreme, and connect it directly to one of the Macs too?
My apologies for so many questions, but this is all very technical stuff for the non-techie layperson.
Many thanks for any help anyone can provide on one or more of the questions / issues.
    Martin

  • Share a hard disk through Airport Extreme

We have 5 Macs (G5, iMac PPC and Intel / 10.4 5 and 6) on an Airport Extreme network. We use a common printer, but would like to have a common hard disk too.
We put a portable HD on the USB entry of the Airport, but it doesn't show.
In the Airport Utility, there is no icon for disks...
Doesn't the Airport with 502.11g support sharing a hard disk?

Yes, Kappy, that kind of flying saucer model.
    I'm afraid you're right.
    Thanks anyway...

  • How do I use a seagate external hard drive with airport extreme?

I have a 1tb Seagate external hard drive and I connected it to the USB port at the back of my Airport Extreme. I opened Airport Utility and am now lost. How do I access the hard drive?
(I have a Macbook Pro running os x version 10.8.2)

The external hard drive must be formatted either in Apple's HFS+ or in Microsofts FAT32 in order for it to be recognized. You can format the drive by connecting it to your Mac and bringing up "Disk Utility".

  • Set up hard drive with airport extreme

Anyone know how, I have followed the instructions as per the Apple site and the hard drive, contrary to Apple's claim does not appear in the Airport Utility. Can anyone help please?

Check to make sure that the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Try using a powered USB hub with the hard drive, since the USB port on the AirPort Extreme is under powered
If the hard drive is formatted correctly and it has sufficient power, it will appear in AirPort Utility, assuming that the drive is operating normally

  • Non working usb hard drive with AirPort Extreme, post here.

  • Will a WD hard drive work with AirPort Extreme to connect with an iPad Air

Will a WD hard drive work with Airport Extreme to connect by a iPad Air

If you already have an AE and a WD drive .. the best idea is plug it in and see on a mac in airport utility is the drive recognised.
If not you have problems.. if it is formatted correctly (Not NTFS mainly) then it can be a drive that is not compatible.
assuming it works get your ipad and pay for filebrowser or at least download a test copy and see how it goes.
Always the best way to find out.. try it.

  • Can I use my iPad with airport extreme to retrieve files from a USB connected hard drive?

Can I use my iPad with airport extreme to retrieve files from a USB connected hard drive?

Yes, I believe so. Please check out the NetPortal app. I don't have an iPad, but I use it on my iPod Touch to access files on my Time Capsule. It is available from the iTunes App Store.

  • How to connect a hard drive on Airport Extreme (second edition)

how to connect a hard drive on Airport Extreme (second edition)? Does it need a special format? It is now fromat on FAT32, but i don't see it ??

The USB port your Mac is high powered. The port on the AirPort Extreme is not.
So, it tends to be borderline as far as its ability to supply sufficient power to a hard drive...even if the hard drive has its own power supply.
Often, users...including me....need to use a powered USB hub when they attach any drive to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme.
You might want to give that a try. Double check to make sure that the drive is formatted in FAT32 as well, since Windows NTFS or exFAT will not work with the AirPort Extreme.
Powering down and restarting the entire network.....modem first, then router, etc.....is something that you would always want to do after any change or addition to a network.

  • How to deactivate a shared Hard drive on Airport Extreme - keeps sleeping

was curious if anyone one knows how to temporally deactivate a shared Hard drive on Airport Extreme - keeps sleeping every 30mins and have to wait 12 second for the drive to spin up and wait for the beach ball to stop spinning. Getting really aggravating.... Thanks

The external harddrive is NTFS format and someone from apple told me that it would have to be reformatted to be seen by the Extreme -- Needless to say with 33% of the hard drive filled, I do NOT want to reformat.
Unfortunately, HDDs attached to the USB port of the AirPort Extreme, cannot be recognized by the AirPort if formatted in NTFS. If you do not wish to reformat this drive, you will either have to use a different drive or connect this drive to a Windows PC for sharing on the network.
The AirPort can only share drives formatted in HFS+ or FAT32.

  • Shared disk on Airport Extreme appending path to '-1'

    Hey guys,
Recently just got Sick Beard and SabNZBd+ setup to automate some occasional downloads I need to make (everything is completely legal there - don't worry) and I have it interface with my shared VERBATIM hard drive via my Airport Extreme.
Everything has been working well, but it seems occasionally (I think when the hard drive is unmounted, and then remounted) that OS X appends the path of the attached disk so it becomes 'VERBATIM-1', 'VERBATIM-2' ad infinitum, instead of just remaining 'VERBATIM'.
I have my folders all setup in Sick Beard, but it doesn't update dynamically with the unmount/remount scenario, so it remains looking for just 'VERBATIM' and I have to change the path manually, kinda defeating the purpose.
Is there a way to keep the path static?
    N.
Apologies if there isn't enough info, let me know if you need more. The problem seems to reside with Airport Extreme/OS X rather than the third party software, I only added it in for detail.

    Thanks for the reply,
I'm not sure I follow. Was that a workaround or a solution?
I am trying to make sure it remains only mounting as 'VERBATIM' and not with the additional characters so other applications etc can no longer find it.
This is what I see after 'Go to Folder' - '/Volumes/'...

As you can see, 'VERBATIM-3' is the only one associated with the actual path currently, whereas the others used to be, in descending order.

  • External HDD with Airport Extreme gets stuck

    Hi guys,
I hope you can help me. I bought an Airport Extreme last december.
The problem is that I can enter my External HDD via Windows 7. After reading and writing at the HDD, Windows Explorer get stuck, and it will say it couldn't find the path Z:\ ..... My Airport Extreme also gets stuck. I lose my signal (still connected to Airport, but not to internet) and I have to unplug it. After it the Airport will start up again and everything works.
I tried several things but it didn't work:
    - Hard reset
    - Different hard disk (with external power supply)
    - Today I went to the Apple Store in Haarlem, and I got a new Airport, but this one has the same problem!
I formatted the hard disk to FAT32.
    Please help me!

    Thank you for your reply!
My problem is slightly different. The hole AirPort is stuck, it won't do anything. Wifi stays connected, but there's no Internet connection. Also my iPad and iPhone don't have internet connection anymore.
The problem arise also when I'm just viewing pictures at the external hard disk, or just browsing through folders. The only way to get all working again is to unplug the AirPort from electricity.
It's kind a weird that Apple uses this feature as unique selling point, but unfortunately it doesn't work for PC!
    Simple and secure file sharing.
AirPort Extreme can turn your external USB hard drive into a secure drive you can share across your Wi‑Fi network and access securely over the Internet. All the documents, videos, photos, and other files instantly become available to anyone on the network, Mac and PC users alike. It’s perfect for file sharing, collaborative projects, and more.

    Diane,
I have added very few apps to my G5. The majority of my time is spent editing photos with PhotoshopCS3. I have software updates set to run weekly and have always kept them up to date. I really believe it's a disk permissions issue...but repairing them doesn't help.
*+Upon installation, I used Archive and Install.+* While I agree that Erase and Install may sound like a good idea, it makes me nervous. I do have everything backed up on a bootable CMS drive, but I'm a photographer and was hoping to not have to erase the G5.
Yes, as I mentioned in the original post, I've downloaded and installed the Airport firmware update. And all software is up to date.
All was working just dandy before the upgrade. Unfortunately now it's sounding like I may have to erase my hard drive and install fresh.
If I do that, is it just a matter then of dragging my photos from the backup disk to the G5? And documents? Etc?? The thought of getting all my photos and important information back on the G5 seems a bit staggering.

  • How to connect my new MacBook Air to a LaCie hard disk with TIme Capsule backup from my old Imac? LaCie has USB 2.0, FireWire and eSata ports.

How can I connect my new MacBook Air to a LaCie hard disk with TIme Capsule backup from my old Imac? LaCie has USB 2.0, FireWire and eSata ports.

You can direct connect your MBA to the LaCie via USB 2 cable.  If you have an Apple Airport Router you can USB connect the LaCie drive to the router and then use Airport Utility to configure it.  Time Machine can access it either way.

  • Is there a software problem with Airport Extremes?

I recently bought a new 802.11ac next generation AE to replace my old generation AE mainly for the increased wifi speeds.  I have been having trouble though getting my proper wired speed using the router though.  I didn't have problems with the previous version in the past.  But now using the new one I get low speeds at times, but its not constant.  I have comcast and get 60 mbps speeds when hooked up straight to my PC. Using the AE, at times I get the same speeds, but usually now it drops all the way to like 12 mbps. I don't understand what it is, and thought about returning the AE but I have past my purchase time to return.  The other night I used speedtest.net and I got 12 mbps. So I unplugged the comcast modem and restarted everything and it went back up to 60 mbps.  But it seems to drop down to 12 constantly.  I tried the same process last night, and it did not return to 60 mbps, it stayed at 12.  So I still have my old AE, and hooked that up figuring I would not have the same issue.  Yet I totally did.  12 mbps again.  So is this some sort of software issue that is making this happen, I don't understand it.  I see people having trouble with WiFi speeds on here, but this is a wired connection.  I also thought I would test the wifi for the heck of it while I was getting 12 mbps wired through my AE.  So I used my phone connected to wifi and ran speedtest, and I got 23.  So how can my wifi speed get higher returns than my wired connection?  Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Eddie

I'm having a similar issue. I have TWC turbo cable in Manhattan. I get 20Mbps download speed when I connect a Mac directly to the modem via ethernet. When I use the current gen AirPort Extreme, my internet speed gradually decreases to unusable. Less than 1Mbps. Websites timeout before loading. My LAN still works, but internet crawls. Doesn't matter if a device is wired directly to Airport or wirelessly connected - internet crawls, if I'm lucky.
This is after weeks of things running perfectly with this airport. Over the past few days, I'm dying.
I spent time with TWC to make sure it wasn't on their end. Reset the modem. Ran signal tests. Rebooted everything. It's not an issue on their end. As soon as I plug directly into their arris modem, I'm golden. 20Mbps download again.
I hard reset my AirPort Extreme, and set it up as if it was brand new. But internet speeds still drop to slow to unusable when I'm going through AirPort Extreme.
Had some luck getting speeds up to usable by specifying DNS servers from TWC in airport, but this was false hope. Overnight, internet speeds were back down to less than 1Mbps.
Again, if I connect a mac directly to the modem, I'm getting 20Mbps speeds again, as I should.
