NTILE Function

After knowing usage of NTILE analytical function, i started using it to divide my rows into batches. However I'd like to pass the expression dynamically (depending on the row count), but unfortunately I see some limitations inhibit me from achieving it. The reason I want to do this dynamically is when there are rows <= expression value, NTILE function forms one batch per each record which I don't wish to happen.
If you observe in the below example, it creates 10 batches/buckets when there are only 10 rows, where I wish to have only 1 batch.

not sure it that fits your need, but I came to this:select batch_no
, least(ntile(&&DOP.) over (order by batch_no), 1+floor(row_number() over (order by batch_no)/(&&MBPG.+1))) grpid
from t;You'd use 2 parameters :
- DOP (Degree of parallelism) = the max number of group to assign batch_unit
- MBPG (Min BatchUnit Per Group) = the min number of batch_unit in a group.
Ok, if only 10 batch unit in total :Scott@my11g SQL>define DOP=4

    Is there any better way to write this query:

    Well, one would assume that a column named empno in the emp table would be unique. If it was unique, the results would have been the same.
    Well, this doesn't end up being much different that your original, but I would use distinct in the innermost inline view instead of a grouping one level above that:
    select min(empno) "StartEmpno",
           max(empno) "EndEmpno",
           partition
      from (select empno,
                   ntile(20) over (order by empno) partition
              from (select distinct empno
                      from emp1
                     where deptno = 20))
    group by partition;

  • Percentile_Disc Function in OBIEE 10g - Help needed at the earliest

    Hi All,
    I have a requirement of using PERCENTILE_DISC function in OBIEE 10g repository. I tried NTile function, to fetch the percentile. But that is not what am intending to see.
    I have a requirement something similar to this, to be implemented in repository. Could anyone throw some light in this regard?
    PERCENTILE_DISC(.25) WITHIN GROUP (ORDER BY F.Days asc) OVER (PARTITION BY A.NAME, B.PLACE)
    Here F = Fact
    A = 1st Dimension
    B = 2nd Dimension
    Days = Is calculated as TIMESTAMPDIFF(SQL_TSI_DAY, A.DATE, B.DATE). Established Inner Join, to fetch this calculation in to the FACT

    I don't have any idea on percentile_disc.
    But,in OBIEE we have a function PERCENTILE()
    It will give the percentage of each value in the total sum of all the values.

    1 Top 25th Percentile     
    2 50th-75th Percentile     
    3 25th-50th Percentile     
    4 Btm 25th Percentile     
    NTile(numExpr, numTiles)
    I tried using Ntile function,got the values between 1 to 100 then i used bins to get the above fuctionality.

    rows and it executed fine returning the correct results. Since this is a scalar function you will notice decrease in performance." Once you want to maintain the old data and keep the new cleaned up one seperately, you could suggest something like persisting
    the data in a computed column which could be indexed and then help improving the performance. This would not be the case for any adhoc queries though."
