NTSC MPEG2 conversion to PAL MPEG2

I have 10 NTSC wedding dvds which I want to convert to PAL dvds. I don't have the original dv files, just the finished dvds. I want to be able to view my made in Canada dvds in India. Is it possible to do this?
I know that some dvd players will play both pal and ntsc, but i don't know if my relatives have this type of player.
Is there an easy way to do the conversion or should i just tell my relatives to get a ntsc/pal dvd player?

NTSC 24p conversion for PAL project

I've got a "conversion" issue I'm wondering if I can get some help with.
I'm working on a project primarily shot in PAL DV, though there are a handful of tapes shot 24p advanced NTSC. I've already captured all of the footage (everything is at Photo Jpeg resolutions to save drive space. The NTSC 24p footage was captured at 29.97- this is how it appears on the tape). Now I'm wondering the easiest and most efficient way of working with the NTSC and PAL footage together in the same PAL timelines.
I spoke with Graeme Nattress today and he suggested recapturing and removing the pulldown with Cinema Tools which I don't really know how to do. I'm sure it's basic and do-able, but if I can avoid recapturing all of the NTSC footage, I'd like to.
So, I figure I can convert the NTSC footage to PAL via Compressor or the Nattress convertor, but as far as I understand, I won't be able to preserve the tape source timecode. This is an issue for me, since I've captured everything at low - photo jpeg- resolutions, and will have to return to the master tapes for onlining.
If I've gotta deal with recapturing or with potentially eye-matching all of the NTSC footage when we got to online, so be it. If there's another- that'd be better obviously. Any other thoughts or suggestions would be really appreciated.

The only way I can think of that would preserve the TC would be to edit the 29.97 footage directly into the PAL sequence... Never tried this and wonder about bugs in the area surrounding the recapture, but it should recapture OK... I'd do a test of this to make sure the workflow will work OK... I'll also add that the NTSC footage will look pretty rough in the offline res probably when played back (and rendered each time you want to use it) in the PAL offline sequence... but that may not be such an issue. If it is, then you'll have to do what Graeme suggested first, then eyball it all in the online session as you've guessed. OR maybe just put it in twice on top of itself. Lower video track being the NTSC directly cut in, and upper track being the "transformed" version of the same. Delete V2 when you recapture...
In any event, you'll still need to do what Graeme suggests for the Online session. His plugin will make the time needed to change the NTSC to PAL go a lot faster than using Compressor... and removing the pulldown pattern in Cinema Tools is a snap actually. It's just a matter of importing the shot needed, then selecting remove pulldown pattern from the file menu. Read the instructions on page 192 of CT's Help, it's really easy to do... Be sure that the footage is shot 24P and not 24PA.. if PA you'll want to recapture it removing the advanced pulldown pattern on the fly with FCP and you won't need to use CT at all in this scenario, just Compressor or Graeme's plugin to change that 24p to PAL...

Switch NTSC DVD slideshow to PAL

Good morning,
my wife and I recently received a DVD Slideshow made on a PC in the NTSC format from our Wedding photographers.
My family lives in Europe and cannot watch NTSC format. Is there a way to make a copy of my slideshow but in the PAL format?

Usually - NTSC-DVDs plays well in PAL players - but not the other way around.
So here is my notes on PAL to NTSC. Just think the other way around.
PAL to NTSC or NTSC to PAL
A. Copying commercial DVDs - No Not possibly at all - Not even legal to discuss.
B. Home made DVDs (DVDs without copy protection)
C. Movies from iMovie or FinalCut
• Save as full quality QuickTime .mov and convert this with JES_Deinterlacer (free on internet)
NTSC ---> PAL.
• Most often not necessary - Most stand alone PAL DVD-players playback NTSC
(if TV is old in BL/W)
PAL ---> NTSC.
• If played on Mac - not necessary AT ALL
• If on NTSC DVD-player - CONVERSION IS NEEDED - nearly no Stand alone NTSC-DVD-players
playback PAL at all.
To do this You need to convert the PAL DVD to streaming.DV or full quality QuickTime .mov
• I use Roxio Toast™ to do this (There are no free converter)
• JES_Deinterlacer (free on internet) to convert to NTSC
• Set up an NTSC project (29.97fps or 30) in iDVD and import then burn
I burn to
• Verbatim DVD-R
• Set down burn speed in iDVD to x1 or x4 recommended by many
• Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on internal boot hard disk before burning (IMPORTANT)
PAL is 25 fps and an analog TV standard of 625 lines
NTSC is 29.97 fps and 520 lines
NTSC (29.97fps) 520 lines - about 640x480 pixels (square) 720x480 rectangular (narrow) pixels
PAL (25 fps) 625 lines - about 768x576 pixels (square) 720x576 rectangular (narrow) pixels
to use a photo 702x480 resp 576 then add 9 pixels on each side to add together as 720
If iDVD hangs on PAL or NTSC.

Thank you SDMacuser. I dumped all the plist icons with no result, and was getting pretty plist off when it occurred to me to delete all the previous dvd.proj files. Bingo. That did the trick. So thank you for all your help and the additional information you provided.

Importing a NTSC iMovie to a PAL iDVD Project

For some reason my iMovie is in NTSC format even though I am in the Uk and operate PAL. If I import to iDVD and burn in PAL is that going to work? And also, how do I change an iMovie project from NTSC to PAL. It is supposed to do it automatically based on what the DV camera is but mine clearly did not do this?

there are 3 reasons, why iM sets a specific video
standard:
* you have set in iM's prefs to 30
frames-per-second.. which is a little cryptic for
"NTSC"; PAL = 25fps...
* you've imported from a NTSCcamcoder... iM sets
automatically the standard, because it can handle
both...
* you've imported as clip_01 some downloaded file
which is NTSC... same as with camcorder-imports...
same with iDVD, you can set the video standard
manually ... or let the first file set it...
I wouldn't "switch" within the workflow... NTSC dvds
are mostly playbacked on European DVDstandalones&TVs
(some older lose audio and/or color...)
The Quicktime engine has a NTSC<<>>PAL converter
included, but my experiences with conversion (I did
just NTSC footage to a PAL project) was, that the
free JES
Deinterlacer does a better job... workflow:
finish editing in iM/Export as QT Full Quality/Import
to JESD/convert/Import new, converted file into iDVD
(which handles both standards too)...
and in case, your version of iM has some "hickup",
trash the imovie.plist... that will "reset" the
app....

I was having lots of problems with the conversion of an Imovie6 NTSC to Pal and followed all the instructions in Imovie to convert to QT etc. finally got a girl at Apple and she moved one over to IDVD after changing the Preferences and and the Info to Pal and she actually burned a disc while I was on the line, just ignore the notice that comes up to that you are burning a Ntsc to a Pal disc and continue and it shows up on the later as a Pal disc. I think that was how I did them under IDVD 4 and 5.

Producing NTSC dvd's from PAL projects

I'm in Australia (PAL) but would like to produce dvd's that can be viewed in the USA.
If I produce a NTSC version of my PAL filmed project in idvd, will it work in NTSC dvd players in the USA?

when you set iDVD to NTSC/29.97 and import a PAL iMovie, iDVD will convert your material and creates a NTSC videoDVD ...
... my experience, going vice versa, NTSC >>PAL, told me, that the underlying QTengine doesn't show a good result.. so, the long way for a probably better result is:
export your iM as 'QT/Full Quality' ..
download and use for free JES Deinterlacer
open your iMexport, choose 'Project, conversion' and let JESDI do the conversion..
drop THAT new file into a NTSC iDVD project..

NTSC DVD Transfer to PAL

I finished the Wedding in NTSC DVD. The client wants a copy in Pal to send to Russia. What is the best way to do?

You must have set the wrong preset. Look in the "advanced format conversions"... Make your movie a PAL version Then perform the MPEG compression in iDVD. The the resulting file should work fine in iDVD. The resulting QT movie will be 720X576. After you do this THEN import the file into iDVD for the mpeg compression. The size of your file you just made leads me to believe that you created an MPEG PAL version... this isn't going to look as good I'll bet, and it probably won't import into iDVD which expects something other than an MPEG file.
You are starting with your sequence master from FCP right?

NTSC project modified to PAL project is this possible?

I have a project that i am working with that has 3 menus, 7 tracks & 17 scripts.
there are two DVD's in the "set" each one is the same... just different video tracks... essentially its a 2 disc set that i need one version of NTSC (done) and one PAL version.
I have created the NTSC project first, but before I create the PAL versions i wanted to know if anyone had come up with a way of just replacing the project assets & video assets to PAL?
I have tried removing all the video off all the tracks and deleting them from the project (this works with no menus & no scripts to convert to PAL) Next I figured it was the menus so I changed out the video assets of the menus and transitions to PAL.mov's but they are lower quality and the project still will not switch to PAL.
any ideas before i recreate all of those scripts and menus in PAL?
as a side note just to make sure... Dolby files do not matter right? I dont think i need to make PAL versions of audio.. i couldnt find a way to do it anyway... just wanted to double check that thought.

i have to make a DVD for Europe- PAL
but the footage was shot on NTSC-DV
If the settings of my DVD Studio Pro project -video standard is on PAL
but the quicktime i import to my video track is NTSC
will the client be able to play this dvd in europe?

You cannot import NTSC assets into a PAL DVDSP project. You must first re-encode your movie to the right standard.

My problem is when I transfer the movie on Final Cut for the assembly of the film, I know that I can convert with MPEG Streamclip but I would like to take my film directly on PAL. Is that possible? In the previous message I wasn't clear, I hope now I explained myself better. Thanks for help

Cannot burn NTSC DVD after burning PAL DVD

Using Adobe Premiere Elements vers.10, I created a video which I need to burn onto DVDs, in PAL format for European users and NTSC for North American recipients. I successfully burned (to folder) in NTSC, and then in PAL. Produced two sample DVDs from those two folders and reviewed them. This highlighted the need for a few corrections to the project. I carried these out, burned the revised film to folder in PAL format, and then wanted to do the same in NTSC format. The computer appears to work on the task, but produces no folder and no files. I am no longer able to procude a DVD in NTSC format, either by burning to a folder or burning directly on a DVD. What is the cause of this problem ?

I do not recall any issues, where the program gets hung up, though as a precaution, maybe clear the Media Cache in the Scratch Disks. I know that Encore (sort of the authoring "big-brother" to the authoring function in PrE) can get confused, when it has some older Media Cache files. It assumes that things have already been done, when it needs to "start over."
Also, I would create a new, empty folder, with a unique name, and direct the Burn to Disc to THAT folder. Since all that one gets is the VIDEO_TS, AUDIO_TS (empty), and then another folder, whose name I cannot recall (Encore does not write anything but the VIDEO_TS folder and IFO, BUP and VOB files), it's easy to confuse the output. Just thinking here.

Conversion of PAL to NTSC - is it necessary?

I have searched the forums but have ended up confused! I currently have a DVD selling on Amazon in the UK which I want to release on Amazon in the US. It is a 'how to' DVD on Job Interview Skills.
Do I need to convert the original material to NTSC and create an NTSC DVD or do I just have to change the region code from 2 to 1? My understanding is that most DVD players will play both formats fine, but I want to check. I have watched a number of NTSC dvd's here just fine.
Please help as this will save a lot of time converting etc.
Also before I make the foray into the US market - does anyone think that the DVD will not sell due to the 'experts' being British?

As I have no PAL DVDs to test with, I can't say for sure, but there are some fundamental differences between PAL and NTSC that may make it troublesome unless you convert.
It may be true that most DVDs will play either format, but the same cannot be said of TVs. For one, the aspect ratio for PAL is different than NTSC. The least that would likely happen is the DVD or TV would resize the output video to match the NTSC screen size resulting in a slightly squashed picture. It may not play at all. Also, PAL is a progressive format if I'm not mistaken, and NTSC is interlaced. Not to mention the 25fps to 29.97fps difference.
It's possible that most DVD players can convert all this on the fly, but why risk it? If you end up selling a DVD that people have trouble playing then you'll just be shooting yourself in the foot IMO.

PAL to NTSC DVD conversion

I own a number of Region 2 (UK), PAL DVD's that I want to copy to Region free or region 1 (US), NTSC as I know live in the US.
I use MactheRipper to rip the DVD content using my old powerbook with it's superdrive firmware unlocked (so it can read the UK DVD) and then use Popcorn to burn a DVD colpy on my G5 iMac (with upgraded DL Panasonic 845 DL Superdrive).
The resulting copy plays fine on my computers but on my DVD player I get a "not NTSC" error. Can I make Popcorn burn an NTSC DVD,
I know TOAST has a PAL/NTSC option - but can I make a playable DVD with TOAST. I assume not, otherwise why would I need Popocorn.

Depending on your DVD player, you may have PAL compatibility already. Therefore, you only have to make the disk region free and have the DVD convert the PAL signal to your TV.
Just a thought.

PAL to NTSC audio conversion?

I have converted my PAL video to NTSC but the audio was mixed separately and so it's still set at 25fps and hence becomes out of sync when I lay it against the video track.
So how do I convert the separate audio.aiff files from 25fps to 30fps?

audio doesn't really have a frame rate. I understand from reading other posts that fcp (and/or) quicktime may associate a frame rate with an audio file, but there should be a way to remove this association. Maybe try running the audio file thru compressor? If you want to send me a short section of the audio file, I'll see what I can do. My email is in my profile.
I seem to remember there being something about importing the audio file into a new fcp project with an default easy setup with the correct frame rate. Not sure about this.

Please help: audio gaps in PAL to NTSC video conversion

I've been trying to convert (to NTSC) and import this DVD video into FCP but the audio always has a couple of 1-2 frame gaps, usually in the same spots. I've tried using MPEG Streamclip and Handbreak.
I'd really appreciate any advice!

I'm trying to convert a video so that I can edit it and put some titles in for a friend. When I volunteered to help I didn't realize the DVD was PAL. I've always been able to convert and edit without Compressor so unfortunately I don't know how to use it. Would Compressor correct the audio gaps? Is the program a quick learn?
In Streamclip I've been using "export to DV" and deinterlaced it.
