NTSC/Pal DVD?

Hi;
Not sure where to post this, but as is a DVD question I thought you folks might be able to help.
I was recently sent what was supposed to be a NTSC DVD from Germany. I'm unable to play, and wondered if there might be some way to covert the disk/files so that we can watch the big birthday celebration.

How do I convert an entire PAL DVD to NTSC, menus and all?

Hello everyone,
I've been given a set of PAL DVD's which need to be converted into NTSC. Now, from my understanding, there is no one program available that can do this, so I've had to rip all the video tracks off, convert them to NTSC mp2's and author the DVD from the ground up in DVDSP, build a VIDEO_TS file, then use Toast to compress to a single layer DVD and burn. If anyone knows a program that can convert an entire PAL DVD to NTSC, that would be greatly appreciated.
The next problem is that when I burn any of the DVD's and put them in a duplication tower (I'm not sure if that's the actual name, but it's one of those machines where you just put the original disc in the top drive and fill the other 8 or so drives under it with blanks), it says that the burn has failed. I have tried another duplication tower and end with the same result. One option I have not tried just yet is to change the brand of media I'm using to burn, but will do so next chance I get.
I'm not sure if the two problems are related or not, but I just thought it would help.

1) Best option - only available if you have the source material - Convert source material from PAL to NTSC using the Nattress standards converter.

2) If you don't have the source footage, you'll need to demux the file in MPeg Streamclip:

How to create a PAL DVD from a NTSC camera

Hi,
I have a Canon HF10 which I have bought in the US, so it is a NTSC camera. I am living in Europe, so I would like to create a PAL dvd from the footage which I have recorded.
The footage have been shot using 1080/24p and I have imported it into iMovie. Do I need to do something extra or can I just export it and burn an dvd from iDVD?

24p on consumer devices is mostly marketing blabla..
in Europe, a 25p more is more interesting..

in iDVD, set prefs to 25fps (=PAL), relaunch iDVD, import iM project..

NTSC to PAL DVD

I am attempting to make a PAL DVD in DVDSP 3. I changed the disc and encoding settings to PAL and encoded my stand alone movie from media 100 which was 720x480 as PAL.
I watch the DVD on my g4 apple dvd player and it's fine, but when I watched it on my apex dvd player, I saw these lines running across horizontally. Thick lines, mostly on fast motion, but other places too.
When my client watches the same dvd on his computer, (mac 0s 9 i believe) he sees what I see on the apex.
Question: Is this normal, since my monitor is NTSC to see these lines? Normally when I've watched a PAL piece on a PAL player on an NTSC monitor, I see color problems and tracking problems... but not these lines...
Also: What is good for a stand alone program, to convert files from NTSC to PAL?

You can't just encode from one standard to another
You need to use a standards converter, or have original PAL footage

Just changing to PAL in DVD SP if the original footage is NTSC doesn't change the source footage and creates a PAL DVD.

Burning PAL dvd from NTSC FCP 6 project?

I need to burn a European market PAL dvd sample from a NTSC project. I've done this before for a European film festival, but it was a very hit or miss process.. Basically, back then, I mixed the project down as both PAL and NTSC files, then burned every combination of NTSC and PAL format DVDs (PAL file/PAL dvd format, NTSC file/PAL dvd format, PAL file NTSC format, and NTSC file/NTSC format).. I expected the PAL/PAL to work, but it didn't. In fact, I seem to remember that one of the combos that I least expected to work actually did.. maybe the NTSC/PAL disk (can't remember for sure)
Will someone please advise me as to the correct way to burn the NTSC project, such that it will be playable an European PAL format machines?

If you need a true PAL dvd, you need to convert your ntsc quicktime to a PAL quicktime using either compressor or something like graeme Natrresses standard conversion plug in. You will also need to recreate your dvd menus and reauthor the dvd.

HDV NTSC & PAL to SD DVD

PLEASE HELP!!
I've got two different projects that need to be combined into one dvd for the client.
problem is the first project was shot and edited as HDV 1080/60i and the second at
1080/50i, so i have an NTSC sequence and a PAL sequence.
the DVD needs to be in PAL.
also, i'm completely confused in regards to getting HDV to a SD DVD.
can't figure out what's the fastest, highest quality workflow.
thus far using compressor and dvd studio pro 4 to build the DVD using just the PAL sequence i've gotten nothing but interlaced awful looking video.
i've searched the boards on these subjects but i'm still not getting anywhere, just more confused.
any guidance is greatly appreciated!

quick question:
is JES deinterlacer the best way to convert the NTSC HDV to PAL HDV (or 1080/60i to 1080/50i)?
client also now wants this on PAL digibeta, so i'm thinking maybe the easiest way of doing all this is getting everything to 1080/50i HDV PAL, exporting via the camera back to HDV tape then taking the HDV tape to a dub house and have it downconverted there to DigiBeta. from that, reimport as SD PAL to make the PAL DVDs. how does this sound?

NTSC project - PAL DVD

Hello,
I'm editing a project in NTSC (since I shot in NTSC), but my client is European and wants the final project on a PAL DVD. How can I output the project to PAL?
Do I convert it first in Final Cut (how is this done?) or does transfering the project to iDVD in PAL do the trick? It needs to be highest possible quality.

on the basis of your need for highest quality, two options:
1- send a tape to a facility house who will standards convert the mataerial to a PAL tape which you can then import in a PAL sequence
2- purchase Nattress which is a software standards converter and a FCP plug-in,
it costs $100 and worth every cent
you could use Compressor, but for quality use Natress as it is a very high quality dedicated Standards Converter
once you have edited in a PAL sequence, compress to m2v and AC3 and import into DVDSP and author the DVD

Will PAL dvd player play my NTSC DVD-r?

I'm trying to figure out if I need to convert several NTSC dvd's into PAL format to send to a friend's mom in Israel (she's very sick and would like to see these soon).
Since I've never converted between these formats, I've been doing lots of research and keep getting more confused. I downloaded JES Deinterlacer (i think thats what its called) but I'm not sure I need it since I read the following on an imovie FAQ website:
"I have an NTSC project and want a PAL DVD.
The good news is: You can just send an NTSC disc. Any PAL set top DVD player capable of playing DVD-R discs can also play NTSC discs. All that is needed is a fairly new TV, built in the last 8-10 years or so."
Could this be true? Can I really just send the NTSC dvd's to her? I hate to waste time here...please help...

That´s right; NTSC DVDs will always work on PAL players when the player is compliant to the DVD specs. Those players do give out the regular NTSC signal and/or convert to PAL60. Some players can even convert to PAL50. The problem is the TV set.
My German TV is 14 years old and cannot handle PAL60 or NTSC; I would need one of those rare players that convert to PAL50 (usually with poor results).
But NTSC DVDs will always work on a PC (when it is an all-region DVD).

G4 with OS X 10.4.11 and DVD's in various formats (NTSC, PAL, SECAM).

Can a G4 AGP Graphics “Sawtooth” running OS X 10.4.11 Tiger play DVD's in the various regional formats (such as NTSC, PAL, and SECAM) an unlimited number of times, or is there a limit to how often the capability to play a particular format can be switched to the capability to play a different one?

Using an application such as VLC should optimize format playability. It may also help with the region code issue. The "number of times" isn't to do with the DVD format, it has to do with region codes set into the DVD by the media distributors. You can change that 5 times and then the DVD player is locked in forever. Try VLC and it may help with both the format playback and maybe get around the region code issue (disable Apple's own automatic DVD Player activation).

HD NTSC to PAL DVD workflow... help?

Hi all,
I poured through the forums regarding this question and could not find a suitable answer. And (of course) I am in a rush for my client.
I have shot and edited a DVCPRO HD 720x60P video, and now I need to get this thing into a PAL DVD.
I tried exporting the video as Apple Pro-Res 422 PAL, and there are problems with the aspect ratio changing, and about 60% of the cross dissolves flash black for a second.
Anyway, after reading through the forums, I realize that I am in the dark for a workflow to get this video out of FCP and into either DVDSP or iDVD (this will be a simple DVD, and iDVD is good enough), and make sure it plays on a DVD player in Scotland.
Any suggestions as to how to best get from point A to point B?
Also, is there no PAL that is close to 16:9?
Sorry for the silly questions... I am out of my comfort zone here... and on the clock.

From what I understand from my PAL land friends, their current generation DVD players can deal with NTSC disks. Why don't you check with the person who will play it back and see what equipment they have.
You did not say how you did the conversion but I would do this.
• Export a file from FCP using "current settings"
• Import it into Compressor
• Apply the advanced format conversion preset for DV/PAL anamorphic and submit the job
This will give you an 16:9 DV/PAL video.
If this has problems, you may need to do the conversion in two steps.
• Export a file from FCP using "current settings"
• Import it into Compressor
• Apply the advanced format conversion preset for DV/NTSC anamorphic and submit the job
• Import the resulting DV/NTSC anamorphic file into compressor
• Apply the advanced format conversion preset for DV/PAL anamorphic and submit the job

Yes, they will. FCP can handle both PAL and NTSC formats (and a lot more besides!)
Bear in mind though that if you wish to play an NTSC timeline out to an external deck/monitor the deck and monitor will need to be NTSC-capable, which could present you with a problem. But for strictly computer-display learning purposes, you'll not have a problem,

Convert PAL DVD to NTSC?

Hi. I recently got an imac G5 and tried playing my 1st DVD. The message came up saying that I have to choose a region code and will only be able to set the region code 5 times before its permanently set. I find this very inconvienent as I have some of both NTSC (region 1) and PAL (region 2) DVDs that I would like to be able to play on my Mac. As a worksround....I'm wondering if its possible for me to convert my PAL DVDs to NTSC using imovie and perhaps some other software.......perhaps importing the info on the PAL DVD into imovie ......and burning a NTSC (region 1) copy? If possible .....how would I go about doing this? Thanks.

I have my computer set to read region 2 DVD . Is this a problem when trying to convert a DVD to region free or 1?
When I run MTR, I get 2 folders, Audio_TS (which is empty) and VIDEO_TS.
VIDEO_TS has many files, example; VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TSIFO, VIDEO_VOB, VTS010.BUP, VTS010.IFO, VTS010.VOB....... etc.
When I open JES 2.7.6 to convert from PAL > NTSC... the JES input pane doesn't see the files (they won't hi-lite, double click or anything) (could it be because I have my computer set to read region 2?)
Toast see the MTR files. If I try importing those same MTR files or the DVD files to Toast 6>video tab, I get "files are in a unsupported format and cannot be imported"
If I try and simply take the Pal DVD and "Toast it" from the desktop, I get "Disk could not be mounted. All open files and programs on this volume must be closed first"
When I tried DVDxDV>OTMovie, the playback was jittery on any thing that was moving with-in the picture frame. completely un-watchable. (well maybe with the right drugs....)
I looked at both links send by Matti (btw thank you very much) but I am a novice and don't understand all of the technical jargon....
All I'm trying to do is get a DVD that will play on my stand alone DVD/TV....

Importing PAL DVD to Edit and Export as NTSC DV

A producer in China has Betacam SP PAL material that I need for a DV NTSC Project. I am not confident that a standards conversion process in Beijing will yield acceptable quality. I'm thinking of asking him to make PAL DVDs of the footage to send to me. Does anyone have experience with importing PAL DVD into an NTSC project, to master as NTSC DV? Will the quality of the PAL DVD measure up to the NTSC DV? Thanks for any help or advice you can offer.

I'm still waiting to hear whether they would send the tapes. I suppose I could ask them to make a Beta SP PAL clone and send that to me. But we're getting into a lot more cost here -- a high quality dub on their end and a high-quality standards conversion here in the States. Since this project will result in a standard NTSC DVD, I'm hoping that maybe going the PAL DVD route would save a bunch of bucks and still be acceptable quality. If anyone has actual experience importing PAL DVD to Final Cut Pro, perhaps they could speak to that.

Burn a PAL dvd from ntsc project

I have an NTSC project with all ntsc media and would like to burn a PAL dvd. what is the easiest way to do so. I converted the media to pal and was hoping to do a 'save as' on the dvdsp project and just change it to PAL but it won't except the media.

It makes sense that a PAL DVD project wouldn't accept media that's already compressed to MPEG2 in NTSC format. When the DVD is built, all it does is multiplex the audio/video. It doesn't change the compression or frame rate or size.
You'd probably need to recompress the original edited source video in Compressor to PAL format. Once you select a preset in Compressor, you need to change the Video Format from Automatic to PAL. Select the preset and in the Inspector, click the Encoder section, then the Video Format tab. Then you'll see the Video Format popup menu where you can change it to PAL.
One other thing to keep in mind: It might be a waste of time to convert it to PAL since most PAL DVD players can convert NTSC format DVDs on the fly during playback. I send NTSC DVDs to Hungary all the time and they have no trouble playing them with typical consumer PAL DVD players.
