NTSC & PAL Widescreen DVD from Flash Animation

Hey Everyone. I have a question regarding a project I am finishing up. I created an animation in flash that is being exported to both NTSC Widescreen DVD and PAL Widescreen DVD.
I started with 1024x576 in flash and created a sweet animation with audio. (Its a 1 min animation that will be looped for conventions etc)
For NTSC
From Flash I exported a 853x480 animation and imported it into FCP to add some fades to the beginning and end and make a few tweaks. I exported out another 853x480 video and imported it into DVDSP set to NTSC Widescreen. I burned the disc and everything looks great on my screen (letterbox on my crappy home tv)
For my PAL version I followed a similar process.
From Flash I exported a 1024x576 animation and imported it into FCP to add some fades to the beginning and end and make a few tweaks. I exported out another 1024x576 video and imported it into DVDSP set to PAL Widescreen.
The thing I noticed is that the video in the viewer seems stretched where as the NTSC looked perfect.
Am I missing something here? Where did I go wrong. Should i have set the video size smaller in FCP and outputted the proper video size (NTSC 720 x 480 and PAL 720 x 576) to bring into DVDSP? I don't know why one would look ok and the other would look stretched.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Try this in FCP:
PAL VIDEO
- Select Easy Setup DV PAL
- Create a new sequence and open it
- Go to menu Sequence > Settings...
- Change Quicktime Video Settings Compressor from DV-PAL to uncompressed 8 bit
- Check the anamorphic option
- Import your movie and make it fit the canvas (check the Distort option in the Motion tab)
- Do your edit
- Export your timeline as Animation.
Same for the NTSC but using DV NTSC Easy Setup and so . . .
If I don't missed something your movies must be fine in DVDSP.
Hope it helps!

  • Creating a PAL Widescreen DVD from NTSC footage.

First off, my iDVD is version 7.0.4
If someone could help me out with a very precise workflow it would be great, because I have a project with a one day turn around and the DVDs have to play properly the next day.
This is the (sparse) information I got from the company that needs the DVDs : "As long as the DVD is UK pal widescreen it will play on the monitors."
In the past, if shooting in NTSC and transferring to PAL, I've had the DVDs professionally transferred. With this project, I won't have time to do that.
I'm planning on shooting on a DVX100 and editing in FCP. If shooting in NTSC is going to cause problems, I can definitely rent a PAL camera instead. (And would prefer to do that than have to do too much in post to get to a PAL Widescreen DVD)
Can you let me know what sequence settings I should use (for both the NTSC possibility and the PAL possibility) in FCP, and then exactly how to set up the DVD in iDVD? I know this is a super basic question- thanks in advance for your help.
Please note: I need the most reliable, quick workflow- would rather spend some money on renting a PAL camera if that's a more reliable method than transferring footage.

Thanks for the response! I just learned about an additional problem, unfortunately...
The client has OTHER footage that was already shot in NTSC that they need edited into the project. So I pretty much have to shoot in NTSC. However, there is the additional option of uploading the final clip to a server instead of burnind DVDs... any advice? Can I use MPEG Streamclip to create Pal files (let's say quality doesn't have to matter as much...)

  • Trying to create PAL SD DVD from 23.98fps 720P project

I'm trying to create a PAL DVD from a HDV 23.98fps 720P project and am having a few issues. All the footage is PAL and I am converting it to an SD file as it is for an SD DVD however exporting through FCP gives me black frames, using DVD studio pro to convert gives me a freeze frame effect (both of which I assume is through converting 23.98 to 25 fps) so I was told to use Compressor. I tried this but can only seem to render out a 23.98fps file as NTSC, whenever I switch it to PAL it automatically changes to 25fps as my only option.
Any help would be much appreciated as my deadline is looming.

    Hi:
Are you sure that your footage is PAL 23.98 fps? I'm not involved with HDV but that sounds like NTSC frames.
What is the source of that footage?
    Hope that helps !

  • How do I achieve a high quality PAL SD DVD from Final Cut Pro?

From a PMW-EX1 camera file edited in Final Cut Pro I am unable to produce a high quality PAL SD DVD using compressor and DVD Studio Pro (tried multiple combinations).
Using Final cut pro and Magic iDVD I can achieve a high quality SD DVD with no changes in export. But am limited to the iDVD restrictions.
From discussions it appears using compressor and DVD Studio pro it is not achievable, it is very frustrating that the Apple product you have to buy is not as efficient as the free one?
If not possible then how do I access the encoded file from IDVD?
My Final cut pro sequence settings:
    General - Aspect ratio: HDTV 1080i (16:9) 1920x1080, square and upper(Odd)
Quicktime video settings compressor: xdcam ex 1080i50 (35 mb/s vbr)

iDVD does everything automatically for you. With DVDSP and Compressor, all steps must be done correctly. The trade off is that you achieve better quality using Compressor over iDVD.
    1. First thing to do is export your sequence as an uncompressed interlaced 25i 720 x 576 16x9 Anamorphic QT.
    2. Determine your optimal bitrate by using a bitrate calculator. Here's a good one. Remember you need to account for all video on the disc, including motion menus.
    http://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm
    3. Bring your down converted QT into Compressor and use the manual settings set your bitrate. Also encode out a Dolby digital AC3 file. These files take up less bandwidth than uncompressed audio. Also remember to match your upper fiiled dominate filed order as well in Compressor. This must be consistent throughout the export and encoding stages.
    4. bring your encoded video and audio files into DVDSP and author

  • Getting a widescreen DVD from my footage - ARG!

Okay, I am trying to take 720p video and create a standard definition widescreen dvd.
In FCP2, I have the setup as DVCPRO HD - 720p30 , and I can edit and see the sequence in widescreen without any problems in the Canvas.
PROBLEM: When I try to export through Compressor and use any Apple preset for creating a DVD, the image looks "squished" and made to fit inside a 720x480 frame, thus looking rather ridiculous.
What am I doing wrong?? Help!

If you don't want it to be anamorphic, you need to specify the width and height of the output (in pixels). Otherwise, for some reason I'm not familiar with, Compressor likes to anamorphic-ize 16x9 footage. In fact, I usually give up with DVDSP and end up using iDVD to create the DVDs since it seems to be more forgiving with the video size, whereas DVDSP seems to like to check the Anamorphic box.

  • Transfer mark from Flash animation to SCORM

So this is the situation: I have a quiz made in Flash CS5 (AS3), that I put into an Animation slide in a Captivate 5.5 project. I need to be able to collect the mark from the Flash file, and transfer it to the Captivate project, which can then (via SCORM) transfer the mark to the client's LMS. Does anyone know how I might be able to do this? Any help is appreciated, thank you.

I recommend you convert your Flash SWF into an interactive widget, which would then give you the ability to assign it with a score in Captivate to be reported naturally to SCORM.
Information about coding widgets can be found here: http://www.infosemantics.com.au/widgetking/

  • Faint red banding on NTSC playback of DVD from DVDSP4

I have completed a single-layer DVD-R. It plays back fine on both NTSC displays and computers, with the exception that the NTSC playback seems to include faint red banding in the full black screens.
The banding slowly moves upward, almost like a traditional TV is slightly mistuned. I originally thought there was something wrong with the mpeg encoding of the feature, but on further inspection I found that the banding also occurs during the transition from the menu to the movie (and continues over any part of the movie that displays solid black; only over the black). This banding cannot be seen over any other colors.

I've been doing some research, and I thought this might be one of those IRE setup issues, but from what I've read, it looks like if it were an IRE issue, my video on the dvd would appear washed out and brighter, not darker. Again, it looks great on 2 set top dvd players I've tried, as well as the built in apple dvd player on the powerbook screen. On two other set-top boxes, it appears dark and muddy.
It sounds like it may be DVD Player or television set-up related. If it behaved the same way on each player/tv then it could have been related to encoding settings, gamma etc. - did you double check the set-ups to make sure?

  • Launch lightbox from flash animation

    Hi All,
Does anyone know of the best way to launch an iFrame video box in a lightbox from a Flash banner?
I have a shopping cart and need to have the video which is served via iframe from a third party site displayed in a lightbox but can not find anything suitable.
    Regards.

I don't really understand what you are trying to do... can you explain in simpler, clear details? That said...
Break the process down into steps.
Get you "video box" working first (whatever a video box is???).
Create the HTML page which will hold the iframe content, then add your video box to that.
Place the iframe on your main HTML page
Create a button or link in your Flash banner and call the or display that iframe... use javascript if needed.
if AS2, getURL or ExternalInterface will allow connection to javascript

if AS3 ExternalInterface will allow connection to javascript

  • Creating a DVD from flash movies (flv)

Does iDVD 6 support flash movies (flv) importing?

Does iDVD 6 support flash movies (flv) importing?
No. You could probably convert the files to DV video (which is supported) using VisualHub at http://www.techspansion.com/visualhub/
You can try it for free.
Keep in mind that the DV files will be MUCH larger. DV runs about 12 to 13 GB per hour of content.

  • How to make an NTSC DVD from Pal & NTSC videos using CS3

    Hi!
I am on CS3, on Windows.
I need to create an NTSC widescreen DVD from footage that is both NTSC and PAL. Also some of the footage is 4:3 and some 16:9.
What would be the best way to accomplish this.
I created an NTSC widescreen project in Premiere CS3. Imported all footage and arranged on timeline.
While exporting to Encore or to Media Encoder for MPEG 2 DVD - I am constantly getting the error "Failed to return video frame". Or "An unexpected error occured." I am unable to burn even and AVI. I have confirmed, that all audio and video clips are exact duration and that there is no gap between frames on timeline.
I am able to successfully burn most of the clips individually (except one from about 20 + clips) - but fails when I export them togetether.
I am racing against time, I have very tight timeline, I need to get it done today :-(
I would appreciate help from experts on:
    1) What could be causing this error - how can I fix it?
    2) Is the workflow I am using (combining all clips as they are), the way to go - or do I need to do something before I combine/export them for NTSC Widescreen DVD.
    Thanks.
    Rene

I think you are starting on the wrong track with this, if your source video is a DVD disk then you should not be converting it to anything. You just need the raw mpeg video from the dvd itself. a dvd consists of VOB files but they are really just mpg files with different header information. In most cases you can even rename a .vob file to .mpg and play it with any media player program.
Anyways you should go download this free program: http://www.svcd2dvd.com/VOB2MPG/default.aspx
It's a great little simple utility, you point to your video_ts folder and it will export the vob files for each title into a solid .MPG file which you can import into premiere and edit any way you would like. without wasting time or quality encoding to a different medium codec.
I will say that CS4 is much better at handling mpg files then CS3 if i remember correctly, but see how it works for you.
    Good luck!

  • Creating anamorphic widescreen dvds

Does iDVD (in combination with iMovie) now produce anamorphic widescreen DVDs from a 16:9 camcorder source?
I'm currently using iLife '05, and the DVDs it produces are not anamorphic widescreen, which means when I play them back on DVD Player, they have a 2" border on all sides of the screen.

    Andrew,
You are talking about two different issues with iLife 05 - Importing anamorphic video into iMovie HD (in iLife 05) and then burning anamorphic 16:9 DVDs with iDVD.
Many 16:9 cameras work great with iMovieHD. I even created anamorphic 16:9 DV files with both iPhoto and PhotoToMovie that also worked great with iMovieHD (05). However, some cameras do have the pillarboxing issues you pointed out and Matti referenced. I do not know whether or not this was fixed for your camcorder for iLife06.
The second issue iLife05 has is how it creates 16:9 anamorphic video in iDVD5. Actaully this does work correctly! It's only the conversion of the anamorphic 16:9 to letterboxed 4:3 for 4:3 TV's that is an issue. If you take a "good" 16:9 anamorphic movie in iMovie and transfer it to iDVD5, it does encode as anamorphic - it just doesn't set the flag right for display on 4:3 TVs.....they are full screen 16:9 anamorphic DV for 16:9 displays, and play correctly on my 16:9 plasma TV at the normal WS setting with no distortion, just like commercial WS DVDs. If this were not an anamorphic signal, I would have to use the "zoom" setting, which is how I view letterboxed cable shows. If you read David Althoff's site carefully, you will note that iDVD5 can use 16:9 encoding, but the playback flag is not forced to letterbox it for 4:3 displays.
Now I'm not saying that you haven't had the issue of getting 4:3 encoding....and your 2 inch border does suggest that! I think your main problem is the import of the movie into iMovie in the first place is creating 4:3 video, and once you've got that, iDVD isn't going to fix it.
You need to make sure that your start a 16:9 WS DV project, and then import your video with the preferences "unchecked" as Matti suggests.
And what kind of camera do you have???

  • How to create a PAL DVD from a NTSC camera

    Hi,
I have a Canon HF10 which I have bought in the US, so it is a NTSC camera. I am living in Europe, so I would like to create a PAL dvd from the footage which I have recorded.
The footage have been shot using 1080/24p and I have imported it into iMovie. Do I need to do something extra or can I just export it and burn an dvd from iDVD?
    Best regards
    Henrik.

no surprise.. the ccd of you device is read-out 24p, but the camera records upsampled in 30i ..
24p on consumer devices is mostly marketing blabla..
in Europe, a 25p more is more interesting..
you have a NTSC device. full stop.
in iDVD, set prefs to 25fps (=PAL), relaunch iDVD, import iM project..
so, you record in 24p, got 30i on tape, anc convert again in 25i (=PAL) ... happy landing..
aside: better results in standards-conversion with free app JES Deinterlacer ...

  • Burning PAL dvd from NTSC FCP 6 project?

I need to burn a European market PAL dvd sample from a NTSC project. I've done this before for a European film festival, but it was a very hit or miss process.. Basically, back then, I mixed the project down as both PAL and NTSC files, then burned every combination of NTSC and PAL format DVDs (PAL file/PAL dvd format, NTSC file/PAL dvd format, PAL file NTSC format, and NTSC file/NTSC format).. I expected the PAL/PAL to work, but it didn't. In fact, I seem to remember that one of the combos that I least expected to work actually did.. maybe the NTSC/PAL disk (can't remember for sure)
Will someone please advise me as to the correct way to burn the NTSC project, such that it will be playable an European PAL format machines?

If you need a true PAL dvd, you need to convert your ntsc quicktime to a PAL quicktime using either compressor or something like graeme Natrresses standard conversion plug in. You will also need to recreate your dvd menus and reauthor the dvd.

Can the latest version of iMovie create a PAL DVD from NTSC Video camcorder? What are best practices and workflow to create a PAL DVD from NTSC sources.

iMovie doesn't create DVDs, iDVD does..
in iM's prefs, set Video to 30fps = NTSC
quit and relaunch to take changes in effect
in iDVD's prefs, set Video to 25fps = PAL
quit and relaunch to take changes in effect
when finished with editing in iM, Share to Mediabrowser
in iDVD, select a theme, grab movies from Mediabrowser
burned DVD will be PAL ..
