NTSC speed to PAL speed

I'm editing in PAL but one seq file I want to import is at NTSC speed (29.97fps). I can convert the file to be 25fps - but then panning shots judder because of the dropped frams. Anyone know a work-around please???

I'd have to invent a time machine first - the clip comes from 1945. This might be crazy - but worth a try. I'm going to import the clip into an NTSC project and then output to NTSC tape, then transcode to PAL tape and capture that.

  • Correcting for PAL speed-up in DVD Player?

I was recently given a couple of DVD-Rs with some TV shows and such, and some are in PAL format and as such, suffer from PAL speed-up, which drives me up the wall. Is there a way for DVD Player (or some other software) to correct for PAL speed-up? And if so, can it be applied to commercial DVD releases (including Region 1 discs incorrectly sourced from PAL masters)?

Thanks Russ - Glad you spotted it... and thanks for clarifying, Mace09!
OK - so back to some more basic stuff then. Interlacing or compression artefacts...  interlacing is often seen as a row of small spikes along edges that should be smooth - a comb like (or 'mouse teeth') effect. Compression artefacts are often blocky or pixellated areas, flickers in patches of the screen. Both could be present.
Have you checked the field dominance as well? You say your source is DV... is it set as lower field dominant?
How long is the footage? Have you tried encoding a short section at a different setting... and are you using AC3 audio?

Playback speed in Sample Editor window many, many times faster than track (at correct speed) in arrange area. How do I sync Sample Editor playback speed to correct speed/tempo in arrange area? Track is spoken word. Sample Editor playback sounds like Alvin on a meth binge. Spoken phrase is generated from Textspeech. Textspeech can export files as WAV files or MP3 files. Perhaps a clue?:   When exported Textspeech WAV file is dragged and dropped into track in arrange area of new project, it exhibits same supersonic speed. When Textspeech file is exported as MP3 file and dragged and dropped in arrange area track, it plays at correct speed.

    Thanks Erik,
If nothing else, this huge list of updates and fixes, shows clearly that the Logic Dev team is working hard on fixing and improving LPX to a major degree.... and from the list of fixes done.. show they do read the bug reports submitted!
    As an aside....
I recall how all the 'naysayers' prior to LPX (and in some cases, since...)  were proclaiming how Logic was dead, the team was being disbanded, we won't see any further development, the Dev team doesn't listen or care... and so on....... I wonder where those people are now?

  • How to convert my NTSC project to PAL?

Hi! I'd like know how i can convert my ntsc project into PAL.
I need finish a DVD for my client take to ANGOLA and there is PAL system. It is possible? My Encore is 2.0.
Or It is possible put my NTSC movie into PAL project and let encore transcode the movie? Thank you very much and sorry my english.

    You have several options.
1 - Create a new PAL project in Premiere Pro. Capture your footage in the usual manner, and as soon as it is in the project, hit the ENTER key to render it.
2 - Create an NTSC project in Premiere Pro, capture to NTSC DV footage, and export it out again.
    Close project.
Create new PAL project, import the NTSC clip & then interpret/conform the footage to the project settings.
3 - Set up an NTSC project, capture footage, export to PAL DV or MPEG-2 from Premiere.
4 - Use TMPGEnc Xpress 4 - it's standards conversion is very good.
5 - Use ProCoder, as Ruud suggests
6 - Use CCE SP if you have it.
I'd try as many different ways as you can, and view the lot to see what looks the best.

  • What are the advantages of varying write speeds and burn speeds?

What are the advantages of varying write speeds and burn speeds?

The slower the speed, the fewer burn errors (or, in other words, you'll burn fewer "coasters"). I've always tried to burn at a slower speed, i.e. 2x - 4x. I'd rather wait a few minutes more and I've never had any burn errors.

  • How do I know if my CPU has decreased speed or what speed my cpu is running?

I recently noticed that when running PRO app my MBP seems pretty slow unusually. I have met this occasion before . I heard that when temperture is too high , the CPU will decrease its speed to protect itself.  How do I know if my CPU has decreased speed or what speed my cpu is running?
    Thank you!

Enter in the search field of Google 'CPU speed monitors' and you should get some results.

  • Burning NTSC movie on PAL disk

I decided to burn NTSC movie on a PAL disk using IDVD. The computer warned me about my action but I decided to go through with it and I got a surprise. The first DVD came out O.K but when I inserted another blank DVD for another copy, the IDVD encoder hung up and created a frisbee.
The next step I took was to transform my NTSC movie to PAL (Changed frames/s from 30 to 25) before using IDVD and choosing PAL disk. My IDVD menu movie clips were left in NTSC format, by mistake, and there was no computer warning. This time after burning two DVD's the third was a frisbee when the encoder crashed again. Each time I had to restart the computer.
Has anyone experienced the same problem ?
Is this a problem with software or my Mac ?

Not sure about the NTSC/Pal issue, but you might create a disk image and then burn a DVD-R. I use Verbatim exclusively.

  • NTSC vs. PAL: asset question

Hoping this will be a trivial question for someone, since my DSP 4 documentation doesn't seem to have much to say about it...
I'm planning to produce a series of DVDs whose content will consist of a large number of video assets (2000+). Currently, these assets are in NTSC MPEG-2 format, with corresponding audio assets in either AC3 or AIFF. My question is: what do I need to do in order to produce a complimentary series of PAL DVDs with this content, given that DSP doesn't appear capable of importing NTSC video assets into PAL projects directly?
Now that I'm on an Intel-based machine, I've sent in my upgrade fee for the latest version of Final Cut Studio (which of course includes DSP), so I'll have that at my disposal. Does this software provide a batch-friendly means for me to do what I'm attempting, or do I need additional tools?
    TIA for any advice.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You will need to convert NTSC assets to PAL assets to do it properly (including menus). Compressor does conversion and there is also other software, such as www.Nattress.com, which does conversion.
The quickest (but may not be best) is to run the assets in bulk through Compressor (but this will also depend on whether you have the Final Cut files still).
2,000 video files is daunting, so try to stay as organized as possible
Also as an aside, more people who use PAL (ex-U.S.) have the ability to play NTSC as compared to the U.S. which is more NTSC centric, so you may want to keep that in mind depending on the project, the audience and whether you will need a PAL version.

  • Full speed or high speed on 975X ?

    Hi,
(sorry for my poor level in english, i'm french ...)
Having trouble with my keyboard, i want to know if the USB ports are on full speed or high speed on my 975X platinum mainboard ?
Every 2 or 3 min, my keyboard freeze or slow down much (caracters appears every second !).
At the beginning, i was thinking that it's a typical XP problem ! So i made verifications in the registry and tried some optimisations... with no results.
In fact, after speaking with friends, i beleive that the USB ports are "confused" by the razer exchange rate (too high).
Is there a solution (software or in the bios i mean) ? I didn't see an option to setup this speed ... strange on this kind of mainboard.
Do i have to buy a specific USB controller for my razer (800 dpi / 1600 hz) ?
    My config : Intel 6600 + 975X platinum + 2go RAM + windows xp pro sp2 + (Saitek gaming keyboard + Razer copperhead).
Thanks in advance for any response ...

Thanks all ! I dowloaded & installed the latest INTEL inf-update utility under a "admin session" (?).
It seems to work fine but i have again freezes every 5 or 6 min (before 2 or 3 min).
Now, for the USB Universal Host Controler the version number is : 8.2.0.1008 from sept 13 2006.
Something is strange in my config : when i read for every USB Universal Host Controler what it is consuming, i noticed differences.
    1 : 14 % ressources
    2 : 43 % ressources
    3 : 10 % ressources
    4 : 10 % ressources
    5 : 10 % ressources
I know that this is controled by system but how can i understand these numbers ? Something is consuming most of the USB ressources ...
Is it the mouse (Razer Copperhead) ?
I will make a monitoring of the USB devices of the mouse and the keyboard in the same time with the "Device Monitoring Software" from HHD to try to understand what happen ...
Btw, if you have other ideas ...
After tomorow (on thuesday), i will by a specific usb controller for  the mouse if i cant found a final solution to this s... problem.
    Maesus :
for accessing HDD : i don't think that some application is working on HDD while i'm on another software ... i will see btw
for the virus, i think that i'm ok (but i will try another antivirus this night than mine : avast). no scanning activities / all manual scan
for spyware, i think that i'm also ok (ewido & spyware blaster & spy sweeper).
for CPU temp : it's between 40 and 50 (without any overclocking) ... Maybe the graphic card which is overclocked ...
Btw, thanks thanks thanks ... i will reply when a solution will be found.

  • Changing the Videocamera Framerate from NTSC (30fps) to PAL (25fps)

When I am using the IPhone4 videocamera (with ios4.2.1) ... the framerate is something between 23.999 til 30 frames. That is very horrible for european and australian users because there is the PAL standard of 25fps valid. If you transform movies with a framerat of 30 to 25 frames, the movie looks very ugly. The picture jumps because of lost pictures through the transformation.
A videocamera without a option button for NTSC (30fps) or PAL (25fps) is for people out of NTSC Country very useless. Why doesn't fix Apple this? Evere simple Videocamera in a Handy has this option. HD 720 helps in that case nothing.

glad I could help... you're welcome...
Apple is letting the side down with it's intuitive software on that front!
... hmm, I'm pretty sure, they spend hours in a sweaty conference room, discussing "but widescreen isn't NTSC, HiDef isn't NTSC - so it HAS to be called by its fps!" - "but NO ordinairy user knows the framerate of its homevideo!" - "yeah, but the new formats are not standard, so it's not NTSC!" - "yeah, but a US video is called NTSC, that is standard" - "but what about Japan?" - "..."
finally, the "enigneers" won.. technical correct, but for you and me.. cryptical.
thanks for The Big Green One

  • HD NTSC to Anamorphic PAL question

I have compressed a 1280 x 720 HD NTSC sequence into an H264. Now I'm converting it to PAL through Compressor.  And to try and maintain the 16.9 Ratio I'm trying the Settings : HD NTSC to Anamorphic PAL.  But I don't know if it will come out "Squezed" and if in Europe they have TVs that "unsqueeze" the image?  I don't know either how a 16.9 image looks in 4,3 in case I have to redo the conversion?  Does anybody have any experience or knowledge in this, and could help me?
    Thank you very much.

Thank you Nick,  I hear you.  Unfortunately I'm up against 2 obstacles:  time and money.  This is a (very) limited budget operation, and I can only send up to 2 Gb via YouSendit to several places in Europe, instead of a DVD via Fedex.  But I will follow your advice of redoing the conversion to PAL at the source of 1280 x 720, and then compress the resultin PAL via H264 ( ProRes 422, which I tried, was too big) to end with a less that 2Gb file hopefully.

  • Converting ntsc dvd to pal for web

hi , i am based in uk and I have a dvd that apparently is ntsc as it plays in my dvd player and says ntsc region, it plays on the computer to.
I want to take small segments from it to convert to web format , add titles etc and upload to youtube.\
trouble is i cant rip the files to use in final cut pro, tried media streamclip but that produces jerky unusable files with random drop out and colours
I then thought play it realtime into fcp , it will play going by a firewire into capture and i see it but when capturing it stops every few seconds saying there is dropout I unchecked report on droped frames, and abourt on dropout. and capturing without deck control. i then tried to go through my dv camera but that doesnt see the picture only the sound.
I thought I could copy the dvd but it wont work either on my dvd recorder or with toast.
any suggestions how I can do this? does it need converting first if so how?
I am only using a few minutes of at least 90 minutes of footage .
    thankyou
    ade

    >Maybe worth a feature request for CS5?
    God in heaven - NO!
As Joe just pointed out, these are 2 completely different TV standards, running on different frame rates at different resolutions.
The results of attempting this "on the fly" with menus etc would very closely resemble a dogs dinner.
    >I would therefore guess that you are stuck with copying the menus and other such assets into a new Encore project for each output format.
    That won't work.
NTSC is 720x480, PAL is 720x576. They have different PAR as well.
If compliance is what you need, then design your menus in Square Pixels at 720 x 540, and resize the image (in PS) to the required TV standard before importing into Encore. 16/9 is worse, as you need to use different designs for each TV standard. There are no short-cuts.
    Asset preparation should be done
    i outside
    the authoring application, never
    i in
    it.

  • Ntsc Dvd to Pal m

    Hey there guys,
I just finished editing a dvd on imovie 4/ idvd. I would like to send a copy of this dvd to a friend in Brazil. Can anyone recommend how I transfer this ntsc dvd to pal m for brazil?
Thank u for taking the time to read this.
    aaron

As QuickTimeKirk points out, just send your DVD. I have never seen a PAL DVD player that doesn't play NTSC discs. And just add a TV that isn't older than 10-15 years and you are OK.
The opposite is harder: Only the latest NTSC DVD players and TVs can play PAL discs.
For commercial ("Hollywood") discs you must also consider region codes, but that isn't an issue for discs you create yourself.

  • Converting NTSC footage to PAL with compressor 4

Hello, Please can some angel help.
I have PAL and NTSC footage. I want the end output to be PAL.
I have compressor 4. What settings, step by step do I select to change the NTSC footage to PAL.
There is info. on the web all relating to old versions of compresor where there seems to have existing a helpful NTSC/DVD setting where compressor made it clear the setting you needed. This is not an option on Compressor 4 so I am hitting a brick wall.
I would greatly appreciate some advice here.
    Thank you
    Nicola

What formats are your source files? What format (aside from PAL standard) do you want your output file (s) to be?

  • Creating NTSC DVD from PAL VHS input

I have a PAL VHS tape that I have just captured in AVI format using a Canopus ADVC-55 bridge.  The settings I used in PE10 were DV PAL (as I am in Australia).  I am now going to produce a DVD of the footage for use in Australia, but I also need to send a copy to my cousin in the USA, where they use NTSC.  The whole PAL/NTSC process confuses me somewhat and I would appreciate some guidance.
    1. If I create a PAL DVD for viewing here, is it right that it won't play in a DVD player in the USA?  If it won't, can I create a DVD with output settings NTSC even though the input setting was PAL?
    2.  If I don't create a playable DVD as output, but instead just create an MPEG file and burn the MPEG file to a DVD to be read on a PC, will it read on a PC in the USA?
    3.  Should I recapture the footage, setting the ADVC-55 to NTSC (rather than PAL), and the project settings to DV NTSC?  I have tried this and it seems to work, much to my surprise, as I thought the VHS tape itself was in PAL format and hence would not capture with NTSC settings.

Although most PAL DVD players will play NTSC video -- you are correct that virtually no US NTSC DVD players can play PAL video. And that's true whether you burn a DVD file or an MPEG to a disc. It's a different aspect ratio, resolution and frame rate.
But you can use Share/Computer/AVI with the NTSC DV preset to output an NTSC DV file of your project. Then you can start up an NTSC DV project, load that file into it and burn an NTSC DVD from that.
It won't be perfect. But the program does to a pretty good job of interpretting your video from one format to another.
