Null pointer exception without any reason

Can anybody tell me why the following portin of code is throwing null pointer exception
Connection con=null;
          ResultSet rs;
          Statement stmt=null;
try{
                    //----------------- Driver -------------------
                    Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
                    //----------------- URL WITHOUT DSN ----------------------------
                    String conString = "jdbc:odbc:DRIVER={MicroSoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};" +
                   "DBQ=./data/RMS.mdb";
                    con = DriverManager.getConnection(conString,"","");
                    stmt = con.createStatement();
                                String sql="SELECT * FROM Employee";
                       stmt.executeQuery(sql);
                       rs.next();
catch(ClassNotFoundException cnfe){     System.out.println("Driver Not Found !!!");                    }
               catch(SQLException sqle){
                    System.out.println("DSN Not Found !!!");                    }

Thanks a lot brother, how could I do such mistake!!
One more thing, can you tell me how to delete the trace of PK auto-number from MsAccess DB.I mean, if I delete all the data from the table and insert again, yet it does not start from Pk id- 1, auto-number starts from after the previously deleted data.How can I make it start from -" 1 " , if there is no data in the table.
THANKS in advance.

  • Null Pointer Exception

    Hi ,
    We are using SO_DOCUMENT_SEND_API1 this BAPI to send mails in our application.Here we are passing values to the input parameters  SENDER_ADDRESS,SENDER_ADDRESS_TYPE,COMMIT_WORK .
    and we need to pass values to the tables also.one table name in the bapi is PACKING_LIST  type SOPCKLSTI1(structure).
    we have used the following code  to pass the values to the table :
                          Sopcklsti1 input_doctype = new Sopcklsti1();
         Sopcklsti1_List maillist = new Sopcklsti1_List();
         input_doctype.setDoc_Type("RAW");
         maillist.addSopcklsti1(input_doctype);
         inputmail.setPacking_List(maillist);
    When  we are running the application it is giving us the java null pointer exception.
    Any inputs on this .
    Regards,
    Pavani

    Hi pavani,
    follow this procedure,
    1)First create object for the structure.
    2)Using this object set values to attributes.
    3)Bind this object to the node.
    4)execute the bapi.

  • Odd Null Pointer Exception

    When compiling my code (in Netbeans 6.7), I get an odd Null Pointer Exception when I'm not even accessing a variable. I'm merely passing it on to other methods. Further, the exception doesn't pop up if I step through the code using the debug tools. Any reasons why this would occur?
    Here is the method that throws the exception:
        public void refresh(Vector insetDisplays) {
            display.refresh(insetDisplays);
        }And here's the method that one calls:
       public void refresh(Vector insetDisplays) {
            this.insetDisplays = insetDisplays;
            repaint();
        }From the stack trace that's printed when the exception is thrown, the error occurs when in the top method, after calling the second method.
    I'm so confused!
    Thanks for your help.

    Ok, your post seems like it's right; I put a Thread.sleep command in there, and it fixed the problem right up. In implementing that, I ran across another problem that seems to be even crazier. It's in my main method in my Main class. When I run the program, it's okay now, but if I run it to the cursor, I get an array out of bounds exception.
    Here is the method:
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            String filename = args[0];
            System.out.println(filename);
            RenderedImage image_rendered = JAI.create("fileload", filename);
            BufferedImage image = convertRenderedImage(image_rendered);
            gui.makeGUI(image,image.getHeight(),image.getWidth());
            final Dissection dissect = new Dissection(image);
            new Thread () {
                @Override
                public void run() {
                    dissect.dissect(new Vector());
            }.start();
        }I get the error when I attempt to run to cursor at the gui.makeGUI line. Here is the error and stacktrace:
    debug:
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: 0
            at ocr.Main.main(Main.java:31)
    Java Result: 1
    BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 2 seconds)I tested it, it happens when I run to cursor at every line, and only when I run to cursor within the Main class. Any ideas on this one? I'm having trouble getting more than a working fix with the Thread.sleep command without being able to run to cursor.

  • Null pointer exception and servlet

    I cant figure out why i am getting a null pointer exception. this works if i keep my form output in the same class as my driving servlet. All i did was break off the html display to a new form and i get a null pointer exception.

    anyway to write the system.err to an html screen with
    a servlet?Why would you ask that? Surely you should have asked "Any way to write a stack trace to an HTML screen from a servlet?"
    And in fact there is. I am sure you have not yet looked up the Exception class and the versions of its printStackTrace() method. But when you do, you will see that there are printStackTrace(PrintStream) and printStackTrace(PrintWriter). And you know how to write HTML (or text in general) to the servlet response so that it shows up in the client's browser, right? I will let you figure out how to put those things together.

  • Null pointer exception in toString!

    Hi all,
    i am getting null pointer exception in toString method.Might be due to threads.Can i synchronize toString?
    The code snippent is as follows :
    @Override
    public String toString ()
    if (mSourceInfo != null)
    return "Source [Name=" + mSourceInfo.name + ", Description=" + mSourceInfo.description + ", Type=" + mSourceInfo.type + ", Path="
                        + ", Online=" + mSourceInfo.online + ", Acknowledged=" + mSourceInfo.acknowledged + ", Tags=" + mSourceInfo.tags
                        + ", Dimension:width=" + mSourceInfo.width + ", height=" + mSourceInfo.height + "SourceId=" + mSourceInfo.sourceId;
    else
    return "Source [Id=" + mObjectId + "]";
    }

    Sourav-Sipani wrote:
    Make the following change:No! Don't! Sorry to say that, but this suggestion is bullshit.
    1. there is no String constructor that takes any object.
    2. sourceInfo definitely is not a String!
    3. there is almost never a reason to use the String constructor that takes only a String (if you where trying to do that).
    The correct solution would look something like this:
    public String toString ()
         // Get a local copy of this object so that the
         // entire method is isolated from any changes
         // in the global object
         TypeOfSourceInfo tempSource = mSourceInfo;
         if (tempSource != null)
              return "Source [Name=" + tempSource.name + ", Description=" + tempSource.description + ", Type=" + tempSource.type + ", Path="
              + ", Online=" + tempSource.online + ", Acknowledged=" + tempSource.acknowledged + ", Tags=" + tempSource.tags
              + ", Dimension:width=" + tempSource.width + ", height=" + tempSource.height + "SourceId=" + tempSource.sourceId;
         else
              return "Source [Id=" + mObjectId + "]";
    }Btw, it seems that the type of mSourceInfo should have a toString, which you could simply call here. Your code seems to do stuff that that Class should be doing instead.

  • Null pointer exception in the morning

    Hi all,
    I have built a custom JSP DYN page application that for the most part works ok. However, I've found on occassion that when I arrive in the morning, the application errors out in our dev and qa portal environments with a null pointer exception type error. The error info in the trace log file is below. I've found that if I redeploy a fresh copy of the application to the dev portal server, it makes the problem go away. In our QA environment, if I restart the portal the problem goes away. In other words, I'm not making any changes to the code to make the problem go away. It's like something has gone awry in the portal.
    The trace log file isn't really telling me anything significant. Maybe someone out there has heard of this problem and knows what I'm doing wrong.
    Here's the error info:

  • OIM 11G, DSML integration failing  with null pointer exception

    Hi,
    we are facing the similar probelm while sending a request from TIBCO BW to OIM 11G (Which is weblogic)
    The below request from TIBCO is not working and thowing a NULL POINTER EXCEPTION
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <SOAP-ENV:Envelope xmlns:SOAP-ENV="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/">

    </SOAP-ENV:Header>
    <SOAP-ENV:Body>

    </ns:modifyRequest>
    </sOAPElement>
    </ns0:processRequest>
    </SOAP-ENV:Body>
    </SOAP-ENV:Envelope>
    But if we change the <sOAPElement xmlns=""> to <sOAPElement> (removing the empty namespace) we can able to fire this soap.
    Could you please let me know are there any patch, workaround for this issue.
    Thanks
    Madhu

    I don't think OIM 11g supports DSML profile and may be that's the reason you are getting NPE.
    See: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E14571_01/doc.1111/e14309/spmlapi.htm#CHDCBJAI
    It states:
    "SPML has two profiles: the XSD profile and the DSML profile. This release of Oracle Identity Manager makes use of the XSD profile."

  • Returning vector and null pointer exception

    Hi, I'm writing a mailing program which so far is working fine, but I have now run into a problem which is completely throwing me. My mailer needs to be able to load multiple attachments - and also to be able to deal with an HTML text which contains multiple images. In each case, what I'm trying to do is to put the attachments and the images into separate vectors and process them through an iterator. The logic, at least, I hope is correct.
    I can get my code to compile but it keeps throwing a null pointer exception a runtime. Somehow, I just can't get it to pass the vector from one part of the code to another.
    Can anyone help me? I've tried various things, none of which seem to work. My code, as it stands, is posted in a skeletal form below.
    Thanks for any ideas:
    public class MailSender
       // declare various variables, including:
         Vector embeddedImages;
         String HTMLString;
        public MailSender()
            setup();
        private void setup()
         //this part of the program sets up the various parts of the mail  (to, from, body etc)
          HTMLString = "blah blah blah";  //sample HTMLString
           Vector embeddedImages = null; //is this correct?
            if (HTMLString.length() > 0)
                processHTMLString(HTMLString);
         private String procesHTMLString(String htmlText)
            Vector embeddedImages = new Vector(); // I construct my vector here, is this correct?
            //Here I process the HTML string to extract the images
            //get the file path of the image and pass it to the vector
            addToVector(imageFile);
            return HTMLString;
        public Vector addToVector(String imageFile)
            embeddedImages.add(imageFile);
            return embeddedImages;
        private void send()
            //this part does the sending of the mail
            //at some part in this method I need to get at the contents of the vector:
            //but this part isn't working, I keep getting a null pointer exception
            Iterator singleImage = embeddedImages.iterator();
            while (singleImage.hasNext())
        public static void main(String[] args)
            MailSender ms = new MailSender();
            ms.send();
            System.out.println("MailSender is done ");
    }

    >>>>while they don't have a clue on how the language and/or programming in general works.
    Thank you, salpeter, for your esteemed estimation of my programming competence.
    >>>What I'm wondering is: how come people always start building applications... blah blah
    The reason being, is that it happens to be my job.
    OK, I'm perhaps slower than most and there are things I don't yet understand but I get paid probably about a tenth of what you do (and maybe even less). I regard it as a kind of apprenticeship which, after a past life having spent twenty years packing crates in a warehouse, is worth the sacrifice. Six months ago I'd never written a line of code in my life and everything I've learned since has been from books, the good people in these forums, and a lot of patient trial and error. It's hard work, but I'll get there.
    I say this, only as encouragement to anyone else who is trying to learn java and hasn't had the benefit of IT training at school and a four year computing course at university paid for by the parents, and for whom the prohibitive cost (in both time and money) of most java courses would never allow them to get on this ladder.
    Excuse my somewhat acerbic posting, but comments such as yours tend to provoke...
    Thank you EverNewJoy for explaining this to me. I haven't had time yet to try it out, but at least the concept now is clear to me.

  • Null pointer exceptions in CallableStatement

    Hi,
    Has anyone seen this problem before? I have an app that needs to invoke a stored proc on a SQLServer 2000 database, using the MS SQLServer 2000 JDBC drivers.
    We were doing this via CallableStatement classes, but unless we specify implicit transactions in the stored proc itself, this fails with a null pointer exception at the point at which we try to retrieve the resultset from the CallableStatement, after calling CallableStatement.execute.
    If I re-factor the code to use just plain Statement classes, and an SQL string that executes the stored proc (as if I were typing the SQL in query analyzer) then it works perfectly without needing to have implicit transactions turned on in the proc?
    Any ideas?
    Many thanks....

    Ok, broadly it's as follows:
    CallableStatement stmt = conn.prepareCall("{Call MyStoredProc(?,?)}");
    stmt.setString(1, null);
    stmt.setString(2, "Test Value");
    stmt.execute;
    ResultSet rs = stmt.getResultSet();
    if (rs.next()) {
    System.out.println("RS1=" + rs.getString(1));
    }That falls over at rs.next() unless the underlying stored proc has implicit transactions turned on. The stored proc can be executed through SQL Query Analyzer with the values used in my code successfully, also by just using 'normal' Statement classes and calling stmt.execute(sql) where sql is the string containg the sql I would use in query analyzer.

  • Client proxy Null pointer exception

    Folks,
    I have a problem with ABAP client proxy. The scenario runs fine, but a few messages does not enter XI pipeline with a null pointer exception in RWB. When I click on Message Content of these errored messages, I get
    500   Internal Server Error
      SAP J2EE Engine/7.00
    Application error occurred during request processing.
      Details:   Error [javax.servlet.ServletException: null], with root cause [java.lang.NullPointerException: null].
    Exception id: [00096BDD38BA00480003206B00002EE7000447B40745C832]
    The strangest thing is if I retrigger the same message for processing from ABAP proxy, the message gets processed successfully.
    Even in the successfully reprocessed errored message, I am not able to view the message content. I am able to view the message content in SXMB_MONI with out any problem.
    Any ideas what could be the reason.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Regards,
    Jaishankar

    Hi Ramakrishna,
    I doubt Timeout is the cause for this problem coz. we used to get Time out errored messages apart from the Null pointer Exception messages. When I resend a Timedout message from RWB it gets processed sucessfully. But when I resend a null pointer exception message from RWB, the same error occurs again. Only if I resend the message from R/3 it is getting processed successfully.
    I will try this setting too. Thanks for sharing.
    Regards,
    Jaishankar

I have added a transient attribute in view object and set default value to another view object attribute via view accessor of view link between view objects. the value of expression is ItemMasterRO.Description, where ItemMasterRO is the name of view accessor define in the view link and Description is the name of attribute which is in other view object.
    Data is retrieving as per my requirements, but when i click on add record button in application module, it is throwing a  null pointer exception. Here is stack trace

    Hi,
    Just the exception stack without any information like what JDev version, what expression you've used for the default value of the transient attribute etc., is not enough for us to help you.

  • IOS default native extension packaging null pointer exception

    I have an ANE that currently has a specific implementation for Android and a default implementation. Packaging up the .apk for android works fine on my android devices and packaging up a windows destop version (I created a separate desktop air application to do this) that uses the default ANE implementation works fine.
    The problem is when trying to packaging the ipa for iOS that uses the ANE. I get the following error when I try a "Export Release Build" of my mobile app for iOS. It should be using the default ANE implementation.
    Error occurred while packaging the application:
    Warning: Using default implementation for native extension '<my ane extension id here>'
    unexpected failure: null

        at com.adobe.air.ADTOutputStream.addFileFromStream(ADTOutputStream.java:292)
    What is missing? I've successfully packaged IPAs before but they didn't use any ANEs. This app will eventually have it's own iOS ANE implementation but it should just use the default if there is no iOS implementation available.
    Randy

    While using ipa-test-interpreter or ipa-debug-interpreter (and also removing the -platformsdk argument during IPA packaging) fixed ipa-test and ipa-debug builds, it did not fix ipa-ad-hoc or ipa-app-store builds. Our entire build automation system relies on ant based builds, so at the moment using Flex 4.6 and AIR 3.4 is basically out of the question because of the null pointer exception error that eckhoff_randy pointed out above.
    Without AIR 3.4 we do not have iOS 6 support (meaning we don't have iPhone 5 support either).
    This is a MAJOR problem. I'm not sure that 'waiting until the next release' is an acceptable answer at this point. If possible can you give me as much information as you have on this problem?
    Here's what's my output looks like:

    Is there a reason why this is and how do I get by it.
    ii. Can I just add the field directly within the MDS>file/user.xml? Would there be an issue with changing an existing attribute metadata using the user.xml?

    Pradeep thank you for your response. it was helpful. However, I also found the responses to both my questions.
    i. The null pointer exception was due to using a complex query I was using in the LOV query. I tried a simple query and that worked fine.
    ii. For modifying the user defined attributes one can consult the following forum post:

    Hi
    Use
    String f = null ;
    if(f!==null)
    Wdcomponent.getMessageManager.ReportException ("this will cause null pointer exception  "+ f.length());
    Better to give it any Constant like
    priveate static final String NULL_CHECK  = "DEL_VAL12";
    rather than space ,at the time of chceking see if it has  DEL_VAL12 if true then put the actual data else let it be there.
