Num Lock issues

Hi all,
I think i'm being stupid but.... it seems like my num lock button is stuck on, on my iBook G4. The num lock button is lighting on and off but the keys on the keyboard only respond to num lock keys.
Also the apple keys act as a power button, pulling up the sleep/restart/shut down menu.
I've had a look through keyboard and international but can't seem to alter anything.
I've connected an external keyboard and that works fine.
Hope somebody can help, if this a hardware issue, it feels like software.
Thanks everybody.

OK, I'd backup your data. This further suggestion could disable your machine and may require a logicboard replacement in event the CMOS capacitor has gone south. That's why I'm saying the backup is important!
Once backed up, shut down, and disconnected all peripherals, try zapping your PRAM:

  • PB DL Superdrive num lock issue

    Hey,
Well after having problems with artefacts appearing when watching videos (may have gone with 10.4.3 or I may have stopped noticing it). I'm having constant problems with my keyboard.
It seems that sometimes, not sure why yet, num lock switches on. Except it's not on. So with the num lock light off (i.e de-activated) if I type a 'o' I actually get a '6', it's the same for the other letters. If I switch num lock on it exhibits the behaviour you'd expect with num lock on.
The only way I've found to cure it is to restart. Seems the new USB keyboards, or drivers aren't quite as good as they used to be.
Anyone else seen this at all?

    Hi,
This problem is driving me mad. It's happened 18 times since I received this computer on 11/14/05. I've Archived and Installed, Erased and Installed and it still happens. It didn't happen when I had 10.4.2 after the Erase and Intall, which is what the install disk has on it, but did once I upgraded to 10.4.5 after a few days. I've run the Apple Hardware test looped overnight; it didn't find anything wrong. I've removed the 1 GB chip MacMall added but have to try without the 512k chip since MacMall may have swapped out the Apple chip when they added the 1GB. Both have passed the Apple Hardware test.
Some day I want to try to borrow a USB keyboard and plug it in when it happens to see if that keyboard will work. If so, it's a hardware problem. The advice the latest AppleCare guy gave me was to reinstall my data slowly after reinstalling the OS, the old Conflict Catcher approach which is just unworkable with 50 GBs of data! (How long do I have to wait to see if the problem is not going to reoccur before I add some new data?)
    Some more notes:
    - It is a sporadic problem (and extremely aggravating).
    - I have checked the Activity monitor and haven't seen any hung processes or high CPU or memory usage.
    - One clue I sometimes get before/as it happens is that scrolling browser windows become jerky, the windows go all the way up or down rather than scroll, right before/as it happens. I use the latest (non-beta/test) version of Firefox, 1.5 now.
    - It seems to spread. First, it affects the number-lock keys. (The number lock light never is on nor can I toggle it to do so when this problem occurs. It is fine otherwise.) Then at some point, after producing numbers when it should be typing letters, I'll lose all keys but never my trackpad/cursor. I can double click; apps/windows respond. When it happens though I just quit everything and reboot and the computer is fine after that.
    - It might happen when I try to do things quickly, like close an app and then switch to another window but often it happens when I have few apps open and am only doing light typing or just browsing.
    - Universal Access/"Mouse keys" are off and always have been.
    - I do use some haxies/OS modifications like WindowShade, wClock and some others but WindowShade is Tiger-compatible and I have used fewer since the reinstalls. Who knows what app might be causing it.
If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them. I am also curious how widespread a problem this is. Is it solely affecting 15" & 17" newer powerbooks? (Those that use the "stepping" processor?) Is it an OSX problem or a hardware problem?
    Thank you.

When I return to my desktop after the macbook has been put to sleep sometimes the CAPS LOCK / NUM LOCK are activated on keyboard. Actually it's not activated, it is only the small green dots on the keys that shine, however when typing anything it's not in CAPS.
This is really strange and I have no idea why this happens? Any one else got this, and/or a possible solution?

  • Num Lock is off at bootup

HP ENVY 23-c115xt All-in-One CTO Desktop
When the computer boots up and asks for a password, using Microsoft account, the num lock is off. I checked the bios settings and "num lock on' is set to on. How do I getthe num lock to come on at bootup?
This is a wireless keyboard model KG-1061
    thanks for your help.

    Hey wingingit2,
I'm sorry you're running into this Num Lock issue. I've got a couple of things for you to try though.
Control Panel > Power Options > System Settings > Uncheck ( Turn on Fast Startup)
    Steps taken from here.
Also try the RegEdit from this page. It's always a good idea to back up your registry before making any changes.
Hope this helps! Let me know the results when you get a chance!

  • Minor Keyboard Issue: Caps Lock and Num Lock indicator lights are wrong.

For a few hours, I have been having a small issue with my PowerBook G4 keyboard. The green indicator lights for Number Lock and Caps Lock are indicating incorrectly.
Thus, in order to be able to type lowercase, I must keep the Caps Lock key light on, which subtly annoys the **** out of me [Apple edited out "heck" ]. Num Lock is worse, because I can actually see it; it isn't usually covered by my left hand. Very distracting.
Rebooting did not resolve this issue. Neither did monkeying with the Keyboard system preferences. If I could just turn the lights off altogether that would be fine with me.
This is a recent 15-inch PowerBook G4 1.67 Ghz, with the dual-level dvd burner and (I believe) the internal keyboard is USB, now, instead of ADB as (I believe) many of the older ones had been, so many of those hacks like fkeys and Ucontrol and so on are not options (I believe).
    Any ideas? Thanks,
    Nick

I finally got it working again, I took the power out and the battery out while it was running. I made sure there were no USB/FireWire/PC-Card stuff connected when I did this. When it booted back up it was normal again.
I also figured it happened because I put in a kyocera EVDO pc card into the laptop while it was in sleep. When it woke back up it went nuts and had to be rebooted several times.

  • MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) - Boot Camp/Win 7 - Num Lock Problem

    Hey,
I have a client who has a MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) who is experiencing a problem when booted into Windows 7 via Boot Camp in that he cannot type certain character like # (hash character by keystroke alt + 3) without Windows 7 error bleeping at him. He needs the # character as part of his password for logging into webmail.
The Boot Camp setup has the latest Boot Camp drivers installed (this was a fresh Boot Camp setup/install today) and every other part of the hardware works I suspect that this problem is not a key mapping problem but more something to do with Windows registering Num Lock as being active.
If the problem is that Num Lock is enabled then what is the keystroke to disable Num Lock? I thought it was fn + 6 but did this change since the Unibody MacBooks?
I understand that there are ways of resurrecting number pad fuctionality as decribed in the MacWorld article (see link below) but this is a Mac OS X System Preference and as such would not operate when booted into Windows via Boot Camp.

  • Can I enable Num Lock on boot up via a VBScript in Win 8.1 with Update 1?

Hope this is the correct place for this - someone directed me to the TechNet Forums from the Windows 8.1 general forum, and then from the 'Windows Forms General' forum to this one (not sure if my thread has been copied/moved to this forum already by one
of the moderators; if it has, my apologies, but I am not am regular forum user and I don't understamnd most of the shorthand being used by others, whether something is something someone has written as part of a repsonse or an action they have taken, or just
part of their sign off or what).
In the good old days of Windows XP, I was able to ensure Num Lock was on at boot up by the use of a small VB Script file, which was this:
    set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
    WshShell.SendKeys "{NUMLOCK}"
It is really annoying with Win 8.1 that on Boot Up, AND
every time I want to switch user, Num Lock goes off (even if it was on before switching user).  I want Num Lock to be on at Boot Up AND stay on when switching user.
I have seen the suggested remedies in other forums about changing the appropriate value in the Registry (which does not work until after logon) and changing the BIOS setting (which does not work because Windows overrules the BIOS setting).  The question
is whether the VBScript solution will work with Win 8.1?
If it will, in which folder do I put the Script file in order for it to work for all Users?
And do I have to make the any changes to Group Policy to make it work, and if so what chnages, as seems to be the case if the OS was Win 7 (mine is Win 8.1 Update 1, and NOT Win 8 Pro).
Thanks in advance for all technical help on this one.
    Neil

    Hi jrv
Fine, and I followed your advice straight away (I posted exactly the same question on the GP Forum) and recived one reply about creating a script and using GP to do something.......
    BUT
as my post above dated 10th September states very clearly:
"Perhaps I need to add that this is a single, standalone, home PC, with 2 users, running Win 8.1 Core/Basic.  Also, I cannot find the Group Policy Editor on the PC; when I type either 'gpedit' or 'gpedit.msc' into Run, I get a message saying that
the file canot be found on the PC.  This when logged on as user with administrator powers.  It is not found either from a Command prompt.  And there does not seem to be a GP Snap-in available via the MM Console."
Given that situation, how on earth do I use Group Policy?
I am not frustrated with the people who are trying to help me and I have tried everything that people have suggested.  But I am frustrated that people do not seem to be reading my contributions to this debate which are trying, as clearly as I know how,
to explain what is actually happening at my end.  All I can truthfully say is that NONE of those suggestions that I am able to implement turn NumLock on at initial Bootup before anyone logs on.
And I do not have access to Group Policy to change or add a new Script of any sort there.  If you are able to tell me how I can do that, then I might well be able to achieve what I want.  But it now seems that, without that, I cannot achieve what
I want.  If that is the case, then end of.
    Neil
Ok - you are home y=user with little technical training on deployment and management of desktop systems.  You should be posting in
htttp://answers.microsoft.com.  This forum is for administrative scripting and not for user PC repair and configuration.  Forget about GP as it is for trained technicians and not for home users.  All you need to
do on a home PC is to set the registry once.  There is a "FixIt" in the link I posted that will do this for you.
You can also call the vendor or Microsoft support for help with the issue.  It is in no way a script related problem.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • HP Pavilion DV7-1428ca _ CAPS + NUM LOCK Continually Blinks + Will not Start up Black Screen

Would appreciate any suggestions on the issue I am encountering.
I have an HP Pavilion DV7-1428ca that was left powered on, so it went into Safe mode (screen goes blank). Once I came back to my Laptop hitting any key would take out of of the Safe mode however this time it did not. It remained with black screen irregardless of buttons pressed.
Had booted and can hear the fan and hdd go for the 2secs then it stops to a Black Screen with the "CAPS + NUM LOCK" Continually Blinking. Tried to Hard Boot several times but the same thing re-occurs.
It does not seem to be blinking in a series a code, just a steady blink (every sec) for both the CAPS + NUM Lock for as long as I leave it on. HP Site provides a chart from 1-6 series of blink codes which does not seem to apply to me.
Being out of Warranty I am hesitant in bringing it to a local repair shop without trying any alternate trouble shooting first.
    Thanks

    Hi,
First of all, shutdown the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter unplugged, remove the battery, and then hold down the Power button for a full minute.  Plug in the AC Adapter ( leave the battery out ) and see if the notebook will start.

  • Failure to Boot Up, HP dv4-1225dx BLACK SCREEN Blinking Caps/Num Lock

    HP,
Since yesterday, my laptop has been unable to start up, at all. When I turn on the power button, the fans start to run, but there is no backlight on the monitor at all, just the audio system on the keyboard with continous blinking lights on both Caps Lock and Num Lock. These lights continue to blink forever until I am forced to shut the computer off.
The HP model is Dv4-1225dx, was running Vista.
Could I get some help to resolve this problem?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Although I hope you already resolved this issue I do have a temporary; possibly perminate solution. I read an article that sounds ridiculous, but it worked for me. Cover your pc with towels to block all air flow. Just leave the screen open so you can see it. MONITER THIS CLOSELY!! After 20 minutes or so it should turn on. Log in and back up what you can just in case. You also want to let the pc run a while to cool down. Shut down and let cool for at least an hour. Try to boot up. If you cant now repeat the above. It may take more than 1 try.
Hope this helps someone. Please also remember, this isnt a perminate fix but its better than junking your pc!

    hey Tobsel,
as far as i know, there should not be any issues if that process is killed. However, your num lock key may or may not work sporadically.
For which ThinkVantage software has it, it is both the Power Management as well as the Hotkeys

    Hi @Lewery
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I see that you are having a problem with your Num Lock and keypad. I will be happy to help you with that. I would recommend that you uninstall the generic keyboard driver (there is no specific keyboard driver) and let Windows reinstall it. Go to your Device Manager and expand Keyboards. Then right click the keyboard and select Uninstall. Then restart your computer and Windows will reinstall the driver. Give that a try and let me know how it goes.

  • HP Pavillion dv6446 caps/num lock lights won't light

i had my laptop screen replaced and when i got it back the caps lock/num lock lights wern't working. i took it back to the guy who fixed it and he told me it he couldn't replace the LED's because they needed to be replaced and he didn't know how to replace LED's mounted to the motherboard. i found it a bit funny that both LED's blew at the exact same time, especially since i had several other problems that appeared after he replaced the screen (those problems have since been fixed by myself). is there some controller that has been messed with that would cause the LED's to not light up?

I am facing the same problem with my dv6500 and never had a so big issue as yours. I believe leds are ok (when I press "fn" + num lock) this led lights up. I would really appreciate a help from HP in this issue.

  • Num Lock problem after windows7

    Hello
since the installation of windows 7 home premium on my HP Pavillion dv9040ea Notebook, it is not possible anymore to use the numbers of the Number Block together with the letters on the Main Keyboard block. It means: when I want to type numbers with the help of the number block on the right side, I need to press the button NUM to switch it on. Then the numbers there work. BUT therefore, the letters of the main keyboard block do not work! ( I live in Germany by the way and use German ). There are some letters where when I press them there does not appear this letter but a number on the screen. when I presse NUM again to switch it off, the letters work perfectly again but the numbers of the number block don't - there instead the page down/up etc is activated.
How can I get it back that I can use the numbers on the right side while using the letters of the main keyboard?
I've tried through execute OSK.exe and regedit initial keyboard indicators, no success. In BIOS I don't find any option for NUM lock.
    Thank you all!

I don't think it is serious enough to return it. I have problems with my num lock and caps lock keys also, but I think it is a problem with the PMU firmware. Quite a few people are having an issue, so I don't think it is a hardware problem.
There are also people having other problems related to the PMU, such as the coloured lines at startup. I suspect we will see a firmware update at some point that can hopefully fix it.
My advice would be try resetting your PRAM with command-option-p-r at startup (until you hear the second chime). Or resetting the PMU by turning off the 'book. disconnecting power and taking battery out, then pressing power button for 5 seconds. Then turn it all back on again and it should be ok.
Stay away from 10.4.7 too, it's just trouble.

  • 12/27/07 update and Caps/Num Lock

I'm not positive that the update came out today, but it's when I found it and downloaded it. Upon the restart, my Num Lock light was on and so was Caps Lock. I thought it was odd, but I turned them off and didn't think about it.
Gee. Big surprise. The update managed to reverse the functions of these two buttons. If they turned OFF, i.e., the lights are OFF ... then the lock function is on. So if the caps lock light is OFF, caps lock is ON. Same thing for Num Lock.
Now, I like the little green lights myself, but I'm afraid to find out what else is reversed and screwed up.
I so regret paying for a family license pack. Particularly since I have not upgraded the other computers in the house after all the troubles I've had with Leopard.
    sigh

and you did the recent security update, too?
    EDIT:
Well, after the third restart, the issue seems to have resolved. Bizarre.
