Number lock behavior

Hi,
I've had this 15" Powerbook DL for about a year and half now and still have a Powerbook Firewire. I am just noticing lately on the newer Powerbook that when the number lock key is on, I can't type with any other keys than the numeric ones. Is that normal? I would have thought that at least the non-numeric keys would work.
Maybe Powerbooks have always worked like this since at least 2000 when I got my Powerbook Firewire and I'm only noticing it now. I haven't checked that machine to see if it works like that (which runs OS 9.2.2).
(The newer Powerbook had a problem in the past where at times I wouldn't be able to type at all without having turned the number lock key on but that seems to have gone away for the most part, only happening so infrequently I don't think about it if it happens at all. The keyboard was replaced but that did not fix it.)
Thanks for any help.
John L

Hi,
Yes it's normal for the other keys to not type anything when the numlock key is on.
With regards to the function of the numlock key being inverted, ie when it's on you can type normally, I have seen this resolved by a re-install of the OS. Since the keyboard has already been replaced I would try that.

    Hello jrccpa,

I understand you are wanting to have the Numlocks on by default. To do this simply follow the instructions below:
Step 1. Press Win [Windows Key] + R then type "regedit.exe" in RUN dialog box and press Enter. It'll open Registry Editor
Step 2. Now go to following key:
To change the behavior for currently logged in user: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard
To change the behavior for all users: HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard
Step 3. Now in right-side pane, change value of "InitialKeyboardIndicators" string value to any of following:
0 - Turn all indicators Off (NumLock, CapsLock, ScrollLock)
    1 - Turn CapsLock On
    2 - Turn NumLock On
3 - Turn CapsLock and NumLock On
    4 - Turn ScrollLock On
5 - Turn CapsLock and ScrollLock On
6 - Turn NumLock and ScrollLock On
7 - Turn all indicators On (NumLock, CapsLock, ScrollLock)
Step 4. Exit registry editor and restart your system to take effect
Step 5. If your Numlocks still do not come on at the Tiles Menu type "Control Panel"
Step 6. Click on Control Panel
Step 7. Click on Hardware and Sound
Step 8. Click on Power Options
Step 9. Click on System Settings
Step 10. Uncheck (Turn on fast startup)

  • Keyboard/ten key number lock

I just purchased a TrackPoint keyboard (55Y9053) and Ten Key (41A5090). When I plug the two into my computer the ten key number lock, locks the number pad on the TrackPoint keyboard. So when I go to type on my keyboard, letter keys I,o,p,j,k,l,n,m,, come out as numbers. Is there a way to get these to products to work together without the number lock from one affecting the number lock on the other?  Thanks.

Hi, Rachel, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
A Num Lock light that stays lit is sometimes a symptom of a deeper problem. Try resetting your Powerbook's Power Management Unit. Does that help? If not, run the Apple Hardware Test from your Powerbook's original Install & Restore DVD, and let us know what AHT reports.

  • Windows 8.1 number lock on startup

I had to refresh my system and now I cannot have my number lock on upon startup.  I have changed the registry initialkeyboard number to 2 and is still not functioning.  Please help

If none of thesse solutions work there is nothing else you can do.  It is a security feature of Windows:

  • Number Lock stopped Working

I have a Pavilion dv6 - QJ912AV with a i7 processor, on Windows 7 operating system.  This notebook has a full keyboard with numbers on the right.
I just noticed my Number Lock is no longer working.  When I press the key, it's not engaging.  Does anyone know why and could possibly provide me some suggestions as to how to fix it.  This is really bumming me out.  I've only had the notebook for 8 months!
    Thanks!

Is the key the type that has a rubber dome under it? Sometimes this type of key can get a hair or other foreign particle under it that keeps it from touching the conductive material to the pad and contact is not established with the key press. Carefully try to vacuum or blow it out.

  • Number Lock for MacBook Pro

My MacBook Pro inserts numbers everytime I press the space bar or arrow keys.  I have tried pressing F6 but it doesn't work.  Is there a number lock key on a MacBook Pro?  Any other theories on the problem?

  • Locking behavior

    Hi!
I have simple problem. Table tabA references via foreign key table tabB. Changing tabA causes locking table tabB AND ALL OTHER TABLES that references tabB!
Thats true I use old aplications (Forms 6i) connected to new 11g (11.1.0.7 - 64 bit) database (and i know, i know all story about that) but when i try to change tabA from SQLplus that comm with OracleClient10.2 it's same! That's happen when amount of tables that have foreign key to tabB is big (by example 30). When i disable this constraints problem is resolved! Same model (and aplications) don't make troubles on older database. In tnsnames (developer, client) i have setted SERVER = DEDICATED.
Is there some parameter(s) in new Database version that regulate locking behavior with foreign keys? I repeat that problem not comming only from old tools.

did i have to create this indexes on older Databases? From a 'performance point of view': yes.
See this post, it explains some more and points to a script enabling you to find unindexed FK's: http://tkyte.blogspot.com/2009/10/httpasktomoraclecomtkyteunindex.html

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You can set the initial NumLock status in the system BIOS. Here's a kewl Flash simulator that lets you see how it works. Go to Config -> Keyboard/Mouse -> Thinkpad NumLock and/or PowerOn NumLock.

  • Apple Keyboard number lock issue

I have my apple keyboard plugged into a IOGEAR device that allows me to double click on the "control" key and switch the keyboard, mouse and montor from my MacBookPro to my Vista PC. All works well except the keyboard numbers pad. When I'm on the MacBookPro the number pad works for numbers and when I'm on the PC it seems to need the num lock key on. I can't find the num lock key. What key should I use?
MacBookPro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Number Lock Key

    Hi, sandyman444 -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
On my keyboard the Number Lock function is shown as being on the Clear key, the key immediately above the 7 on the keypad. Shift-Clear, Option-Clear, or Shift-Option-Clear may enable that (Option = Alt).

  • Number Lock Problem on Satellite Pro L20

We have about 60 Satellite Pro L20s on a network. When the user starts the computer sometimes they start with the number lock on. Its seems to be worse on some that others. This is very annoying as it causes problems with logons.
Is there any way of disabling the number lock function on these laptops?
    Thanks
    Mark

    Hi
Your right, the num lock key can be switched on or off by using FN & F11, but I was wondering if there is a way to disable the num lock function entirely.
The problem is that on some of the laptops it is activated at switch on and on some it is not. This is causing problems as we are using windows 2000 network and some uses are becoming confused when they try to login and it fails as a result of having characters in their password that are shared with the number keys. They cannot tell that they are typing the wrong letters as they are obscured.
I appreciate that it is easy to switch off the num lock but as a technician it is creating unnecessary work for me with users repeatedly complaining.
    Thanks
