Number Lock key anyone?

Okay ... I'd love to play NetHack ... but I need to enable my NumLock on my iMac's keyboard to get the number keypad to work right. Um ... where's the NumLock key?
I've heard the Clear key was the NumLock key: no success.
On my iBook I think f6 is the NumLock key: no success on the iMac.
Key combinations with f6 or Clear: no success.
Help?

My Apple Black Pro keyboard's 'Clear' key also has 'Num Lock' on it, oddly enough I have never found it to do anything other then clear. I think I read somewhere that there was a num lock LED for the key as well but I have never seen it on.
I think Apple quietly dropped the 'num lock' label on the key to avoid confusion (As it didnt do anything).
Found on google --->
How does the Num Lock key work?
The Num Lock key on the Mac does not really do Num Lock. It is the Clear key. For example, when you are in the Calculator application, pressing Clear/NumLock erases the number displayed. The reason the key is marked Num Lock is for users running PC emulation software on the Mac. The clear key on the Mac has the same key code as the num lock key on the PC (i.e., they are the same key). Apple's keyboard works the same way, but they do not include the LED.
In versions of Mac OS before OS X 10.3 Panther, the Num Lock key LED may light up, but it does not affect how the keyboard functions.

  • Number lock key (F6) won't unlock

I don't remember pressing this key down, but it is locked and the green light is on...and I can't unlock it no matter how many times I push it or hold it down. So, the keyboard will only type numbers right now
I tried rebooting, but it didn't reset.
I also tried going to preferences and resetting the keyboard to default, but that didn't work either.
This is basically the first problem I've had with the computer in 3.5 years.
Any suggestions on how to 'unlock' the number lock?

Hi, Rachel, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
A Num Lock light that stays lit is sometimes a symptom of a deeper problem. Try resetting your Powerbook's Power Management Unit. Does that help? If not, run the Apple Hardware Test from your Powerbook's original Install & Restore DVD, and let us know what AHT reports.

  • Number Lock Key

    Hi,
My dad's got a PowerBook 17" G4 with a French keyboard. Recently, the numeric lock seems to have stopped working. The light doesn't show up and the numbers don't work.
    Any ideas?
(I've read some previous posts and have turned off the 'mouse key', still no luck!)
    Many thanks,
    axelle

    Hi axelle,
Try pressing 'fn' (bottom left of keyboard) and F6. If it works then fire up System Preferences, select "Keyboard and Mouse" and untick the "Use the F1-F12 keys to control software features" box within the Keyboard section.
Post back on how you got on.

  • Where is the number lock key on my 2000-210us thanks

Question is in sub ject thanks

    Hi,
The numlock key is for a keyboard which has separate numeric keypad only. You machine does not have separate numeric keypad therefore does not have numlock key.
If you wish to use numlock key you can buy something like this:
    Please also try this:

  • Number Pad Keys Aren't Recognized

I am unable to get the number pad keys (on the right side of the keyboard) to work on either of my Apple Keyboards (wireless and wired aluminum). The number pad keys function when I move the keyboards over to my G5, so I think the keyboards themselves are not the problem. Neither keyboard has a number lock key.
Any ideas as to why these number pad keys on the right side of my keyboards don't work?
    Thanks

Malcolm: You were correct. I went into Universal Access and turned off Mouse Keys. I can now you the number pad. Thanks so much.

  • Number Lock for MacBook Pro

My MacBook Pro inserts numbers everytime I press the space bar or arrow keys.  I have tried pressing F6 but it doesn't work.  Is there a number lock key on a MacBook Pro?  Any other theories on the problem?

Have you checked over on the Apple online store & Apple resellers plus read the reviews of the security locks?

  • Number lock behavior

    Hi,
I've had this 15" Powerbook DL for about a year and half now and still have a Powerbook Firewire. I am just noticing lately on the newer Powerbook that when the number lock key is on, I can't type with any other keys than the numeric ones. Is that normal? I would have thought that at least the non-numeric keys would work.
Maybe Powerbooks have always worked like this since at least 2000 when I got my Powerbook Firewire and I'm only noticing it now. I haven't checked that machine to see if it works like that (which runs OS 9.2.2).
(The newer Powerbook had a problem in the past where at times I wouldn't be able to type at all without having turned the number lock key on but that seems to have gone away for the most part, only happening so infrequently I don't think about it if it happens at all. The keyboard was replaced but that did not fix it.)
    Thanks for any help.
    John L

    Hi,
Yes it's normal for the other keys to not type anything when the numlock key is on.
With regards to the function of the numlock key being inverted, ie when it's on you can type normally, I have seen this resolved by a re-install of the OS. Since the keyboard has already been replaced I would try that.

  • Num lock key

    Hi All,
What is the numlock key on the new MBPs? I've just realised I have an application that uses it all the time.
If there is no default, can I create one via keyboard shortcuts?
    Cheers, Chris

    Hi Stedman1,
I understand, however there are programs that use the numlock as a hotkey (both OS 10 and XP apps). I was really looking to replicate it, because otherwise I cannot navigate those apps.
Seems excessive to be forced to purchase an external number pad simply to press a single button.
Any way around it - any way to emulate the number lock key, and trick programs into thinking I've pressed it?
    Cheers, Chris

  • Safety Boot Mode- How to undo stickykeys/ number lock/ anything else

I just rebooted in safety mode and i cannot enter in my password to continue to my desktop screen. It says my password is wrong. But i know 100% what my password is. Is there any chance i hit an invisible number lock key, or hit sticky keys. Please help me.

Safety boot? Do you mean Safe Mode? Start with http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393 and http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392. Restart normally, System Preferences->Accounts->your account->unlock the lock->check/reset password.

  • Number Lock Problem

THe numbers on my numeric keypad have stopped working. I'm using a bluetooth keyboard on the flatscreen G5 imac. There is no "number lock" key -- only a "clear" button, which doesn't seem to do anything. It did work once but recently stopped working. Any idea how to get it back in action? -- Paul

    Hi Paul,
Is it that you enabled Mouse Keys, probably by hitting the Option key five times?
Go to System Preferences > Universal Access > Mouse, turn Mouse Keys off (or on then off), hopefully it works again now.

ps I have not got the recovery disks (lost when we moved)

Sorry to hear that. Please refer to the Blank Screen LED Error Codes document from HP Support. It sounds like a "General system board failure." The explanation says to contact HP for assistance. The motherboard might need to be replaced, and you will probably require the assistance of a technician to fix the problem.

  • Number lock and caps lock are stuck

help! number lock key seems to be stuck!
i can only write lower case letters when the number lock is on and the caps lock is on.
when the caps lock is off, i type capitals.
when the numbers lock is off, only the number keys work on the keyboard.
how do i get the keyboard back to normal?

Hi bluecrop, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Tough to tell from here, but may be some Corruption.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot and not in Safe Mode, then it is likely some 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Also see what is in System Preferences>Other Row.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
    /private/var/run/StartupItems
    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems
Another way to test is create a new Account, login to that one & see if it happens there.

  • Keyboard/ten key number lock

I just purchased a TrackPoint keyboard (55Y9053) and Ten Key (41A5090). When I plug the two into my computer the ten key number lock, locks the number pad on the TrackPoint keyboard. So when I go to type on my keyboard, letter keys I,o,p,j,k,l,n,m,, come out as numbers. Is there a way to get these to products to work together without the number lock from one affecting the number lock on the other?  Thanks.

Could be an early retirement problem.  There is no fixed lifespan for anything, as you know.   Find a friend with a keyboard and test that in your machine.  That will show if it is your keyboard or your computer.   We can progress from there.

  • Anyone know how to disable the "caps lock" key?

I'm a klutz typist who needs to look at the keys when I type, and I often hit the caps lock key by mistake and have to go back and retype a lot. There used to be in the real old days a freeware utility to do this, but I don't know how to do it today.
