Number of backups reduced again.

In Logic 7 and previous, the number of saved project backups was variable by user preference. I had always set this to at least 100 for a number of reasons, not the least of which is I used it to track my time when billing my clients. (if I save, I'm working, and I can just look at the modification dates of all the saved backup files).
In Logic 8 they removed it so I had to override it by editing the plist like this:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/5556847?messageID=5556847&%3b#5556847?mess ageID=5556847&%3b
In Logic 9 they put it back again in the prefs.
Now in Apple's infinite wisdom, they have removed it again and reduced it to 10. <sigh>
This is a problem for me. No I don't want to use Project Alternatives or new versions, because I have to remember to give things a new name every time I get to 10 saves. It's not practical The beauty of project backups is that you don't have to think about it.
I do see a "MaxBackupsToKeep" bit of text in the plist for LPX, but it's less clear to me that this is an editable variable field this time around. Anyone have an idea how to increase this number by editing the plist, or will that not work this time around?

ok the problem was, I was looking at the plist file in a regular text editor. Using the handy little free app "Pref Setter" one can do a search for "MaxBackupsToKeep", which is assigned an integer value and can be changed. It just is far less obvious from looking at the raw plist as text.
Whether modifying it works or not is another matter. I'll be testing it tonight.
For anyone else interested, I used to do a search by modification date within a project folder to keep track of time spent on a project.
Because the project backups are now kept inside of a package file, the normal Command-F apple search doesn't work anymore for that.
Another great shareware app "Find Any File" allows inclusion of package contents, so I think I'll be back in good stead with this system.

Has anyone encountered a message like this in system.log? If so, any suggestions as to how to find and delete the problem "partially deleted backup?"
    /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[443]: Starting post-backup thinning
com.apple.backupd[443]: Found partially deleted backup - trying again to delete: 2007-12-01-211848
Time Machine has been stuck displaying the barber pole of doom for two hours, with the accompanying message "Finishing backup..." It appears that TM is choking on a backup that was for some reason only partially deleted earlier (probably when I forced a shut down after a couple of hours of similar nonsense with TM). FWIW, my TM disk is an internal 1 TB SATA drive with over half the space still free.
    Cheers!

    Hi Barry:
Thanks for the suggestion. I hadn't realized that I could navigate the Time Machine disk that way.
I deleted the offending folder, and then emptied the Trash. Interestingly, this caused the same "churning" sound from my hard drive that I was getting when Time Machine was stalled. The Trash was taking a long time to empty, and it occurred to me that the problem might be related to Compost, a utility that I installed to keep my Trash at a manageable size. So I stopped Compost, my Trash then emptied out quickly, and I assumed that all would be well.
Well, not quite. I restarted TM, it ran a quick little backup, and then according to system.log it began the post-backup thinning. TM promptly stalled with the barber pole of doom, and the hard drive churning sound resumed. I'm getting the following message repeating endlessly in system.log:
    Dec 3 17:02:42 macpro kernel[0]: HFS resolvelink: can't find iNode3324704
    Dec 3 17:03:06 macpro kernel[0]: disk3s2: 0xe0030005 (UNDEFINED).
    Dec 3 17:03:06 macpro kernel[0]:
The message appears every 20 seconds or so, and after a few of the same messages the iNode number changes. I've Googled the error message, but didn't find anything that would shed light on what it means. I'm going to leave TM running for a few hours to see if it eventually works its way through these errors. If not, then I'll probably just erase the **** drive and start again with a fresh backup.
    Cheers!

  • How do I increase the number of backups/previous versions for FCPX?

I had a fairly traumatic incident with an .fcpproject file getting corrupted. This resulted in FCPX crashing every time it was launched.
I was eventually able to resolve it by taking the file from "Final Cut Projects/Project Folder Name/Project Name/Backups/20120522-193628-MDT.fcpproject," renaming it CurrentVersion.fcpproject and dragging it into the parent folder.
Going through my projects, I've noticed that a few of my projects have an Old Versions folder and all of them have a Backups folder, but Backups only ever has one version. For safety purposes, I would like to know if there is some way to control the number of backup files / old versions that FCP puts in the project folders. Ideally this would be a setting in FCP's preferences window, but of course it's not there because Apple knows best.
Time Machine is not an optimal solution as my projects are stored on an external storage array (Drobo).
    Thank you.

FCP X only provides one backup which is updated every 15 minutes.

  • Large number of attributes reduces data display in Query (PLS HELP).

WE are under SP 16 also(Note 562162 - Additional selection of attribute reduces query result set is allready exists), and did not found any proper note.
So guru's can any one please tell me how i can get the data in Query for these attribute by keeping the same selection option for Equipment numbers (10000).

  • Aperture forgets it license and asks me for the serial number over and over again

    Hi,
This is getting ridiculous to the point where I'm thinking of just ditching Aperture.  It's continually forgetting is license and asking me for the serial number over and over again.  I have the original serial number and an upgrade number when I upgraded to v3, but right now, it's not  accepting either of them. What's going on and how do I fix it permanently?
    Thanks,
    Rob

Rob, have you upgraded to Aperture 3.4.3? This is supposed to have fixed the serial number problem:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1610
    About Aperture 3.4.3
Addresses an issue that could cause a licensed copy of Aperture to prompt for a serial number with each launch
Be sure to enter the serial number, when you are logged in from an account with Administrator priveleges - otherwise can it not be stored.
Aperture is installed for all users on your mac, so the serial number is written to the system library, not the user library, and this requires read/write access for administrators. Do you enter your serial number using an administrator account?
When did this start? Have you migrated your system from from another mac? Then you still may have an older ProAppSystemID file  or Aperture cannot write to the System Library.
To stop Aperture asking for the serial number, first check, if you still have an old file "ProAppSystemID" in your System Library.
    Quit Aperture.
Go to your MacintoshHD and open the folder "Library", then "Application Support", then "ProApps".
Remove the File "ProAppsSystemID" to the Desktop, if it exist and restart Aperture.
Reenter your serial number, hopefully for the last time.
Sometimes Aperture writes this file to a temporary directory, when it cannot write to the Library. If the above does not work, look at the temporary directory /tmp
    Use the Finder's "Go" menu
Go > Got to folder    and  enter /tmp into the textfield. If you see the file there, move it to its proper location.
In this case you may want to repair the permissions on your system drive; you can do this using the "First Aid" tools in "Disk Utility" (located in Applications > Utilities)
    Regards

  • Changing the number of backups??

So I recently set up Time Machine using a new 2 TB external HD. I want to change it so that it doesn't keep weekly backups until the backup disk is full (I have no need for 2 TB of backups!!). Is there any way to change the number of backups that Time Machine keeps? Say for example that backups over a month old are deleted?
    Thanks!
    Peter

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
No, you can't limit the age of your backups directly. That's all built-in at a low level, not configured by any file.
The only way to limit TM backups is to limit the size of the volume they're on. In your case, that would be by partitioning the drive.
You may want to wait until you've reached the level you want (a month), then partition the drive so there's very little space left on the TM partition.
But . . . there are situations where TM will need to do a very large or even full backup, so leave enough extra space to accommodate that. Our "rule of thumb" is that TM needs 2-3 times the size of the data it's backing up, but of course that varies depending on how you use your Mac.
See #D3 and #D4 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for things that cause large or full backups.
See #3 in [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Using Snow Leopard+ forum) for partitioning info.

  • Delivery Note Number should not repeat again during MIGO

    Hi Friends,
My client has a requirement to validate the Delivery note filed in the MIGO screen, i.e., the system should allow the user to enter a delivery note number once entered already during goods movement through MIGO. Is there any way that this can be done?
    Regards
    Guru Prasad

    Thanks for the reply Ganesh.
    Explaination of the requirement:
During goods receipt the user is supposed to enter the delivery challan number of the vendor in the filed "Delivery Note" in MIGO header. If the user by mistake types the same delivery note number again while posting goods reciept for the same vendor in future, the system should throw an error. If there is any user exit or if it can be done through some development kindly suggest the procedure for the same.
I also checked for the standard system messages, but couldn't find any.

  • Backup MX - Again

    Greetings all.
Firstly let me apologize for my ignorance of the postfix config files. I humbly beg forgiveness.
I am trying to get a backup MX configuration running.
Yes, I have read "STANDARDCONFIGURATIONREADME.html#backup". It is unclear, and I am still confused.
For example. The holy tome states that:
"When your system is PRIMARY MX host for a remote site you need the above, plus:
    18 /etc/postfix/main.cf:
    19 transport_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/transport
    20
    21 /etc/postfix/transport:
    22 the.backed-up.domain.tld relay:[their.mail.host.tld]"
I hate the example domains in this passage. I presume "their.mail.host.tld" is the name of the server that is the backup MX, whereas "the.backed-up.domain.tld" is the server that is the primary MX. Is this correct? If this is the case, why would they provide the BIND example that calls the backup MX "your.machine.tld." then switch to calling it "their.mail.host.tld" in the postfix example? I must be interpreting this totally wrong.
    Furthermore the holy document says:
    "Important notes:
Do not list the.backed-up.domain.tld in mydestination."
Again, the Gods have been unclear. The document states that the previous two examples are BOTH meant to be included in the main.cf of the Primary MX. So if I'm not supposed to list backed-up domains in $mydestination, how am I supposed to define my server aliases? Does this "Important Note" not apply to the Primary MX .cf?
I've done my fair share of modifying config files but Postifix's Backup MX is baffling me. Could someone please PLEASE help clarify? Even a link to a more descriptive and explanatory document would be much appreciated.

    Hi there,
    No, you're exactly right.
My copy of the O'Reilly publication: "Postfix: The Definitive Guide" arrived in the (real) mail today. Once again, this marvelous publisher has put out a book that exposes a complex technical subject to be really quite simple when it's explained by someone who can communicate effectively.
Someone dropped the book on my desk around 10AM. By 2PM I'd already double-checked my configuration and tested to make sure that backup transport for my domain was functioning correctly, while prohibiting an open relay situation. It was really handy to be able to check the configuration by Telneting into port 25.
Thanks to Kyle Dent for writing this excellent guide and demystifying an easy to use and well-designed program.

  • On GSS(global site selector)network max configurable the number of backup?

    HI..
I would like to know the max backup gss number when we configure gss network.
I did two gss when I configure gss topology. there are no problem when I configure two gss to active and the other standby.
but I read the cco document that the gss cluster is being max up to 8 gss box.
    is it possible topology?
when I configure two more gss on one cluster, I occered the err log on primary gss.

  • IPhoto backup reduced all file sizes

    Hi,
I recently backed up my iPhoto library to an external hard drive as the library was so big my MacBook was full up.
Recently I checked the photos and all of them are significantly reduced in size.
This is a disaster for me as it is all my photos before a few years ago and a lot of them have significant value to me.
Is there any way of restoring them to their original file size or have they been reduced forever?
    Regards,
    Owen

Yes - restore the iPhoto library from before you did the export using Time Machine - the iPhoto library contains your full sized photos - see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US for TM details
Note that an export does not give you a backup of the iPhoto library - it does give you a back up of just one version of your photos and you have only what you choose to export - see the user tip on exporting for details on the available options

  • Forgot my pin number for Backup Assistant

It has been quite a while since I downloaded the backup assistant app for my Samsung Gusto mobile phone and I have forgotten my PIN number and I am unable to retrieve it by pressing the # sign as directed....Nothing happens and every time I open my phone it says invalid pin number. It is very frustrating. Can anyone help?
    Thanks, Mike.

Can't be more specific than what I gave ya, sorry.  For the Backup Assistant accounts that I have, if I log into those lines' MyVerizon accounts and click Manage Contacts, I see a gray View PIN button in the upper right-hand corner.  When I click on that, I get a pop-up with the PIN number.  You may have to contact Customer Service and see if they can figure it out; good luck.
