Number of elements at logical level / odbc driver

Hi everyone,
I'm new in BI area and I cannot understand one basic thing.
I study documentation about BI server, exactly chapter about "creating dimensions" and I'm confused about setting "number of elements at logical level"
It looks for me that "number of elements at logical level" is static.
What will be when someone update data in the table and number of elements will be different than number of elements in our logical level?
example:
current column with distinct values:
channel_desc:
direct sales
tele sales
catalog
internet
partners
in this case I set number of elements at logical level 5.
after a while some update data in the table and our column looks (see below)
column after update with distinct values:
channel_desc:
direct sales
tele sales
catalog
internet
partners
others (added value)
Does it mean that I have to change it to current numbers of elements?
I'm sure that this is misunderstanding in my case, but I don't know where?
Second problem which I have:
BI with oracle database is on linux
client software on windows
I can import data from database like sybase or flat files to the physical model, I can view data, but when I create whole model (physical, bussines model and mapping, presentation) and I try access data from "Answers" I have this error:
"Data source name not found and no default driver specified"
regards
Bart

Number of elements is just an indication used by the BI Server (e.g. when generating LOV's in Answers). It won't cause any problems when it doesn't hold the exact number of elements available in the dataset.

  • What is the purpose of Number of elements at this level and ..?

    Hi,
What is the purpose of Number of elements at this level an how it influences the obi server to optimize the query?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
Number of elements at this level, specify the number of elements that exist at this logical level.By mentioning this levels we are telling to the BI Server that it is a parent and the next level is a child.

  • Reg Number of elements at this level and Variables

    Hi Experts,
What is the purpose of Number of elements at this level in the dimensional hierarchy of BMM layer on what basis default it will show 1 if we change this value into 2 what happens .
Difference between non system session variables and dynamic repository variables in which scenarios we will use these bth variables.

    Hi Rafi,
    Sorry for delay response.
    Nonsystem Session Variables :-
The procedure for defining nonsystem session variables is the same as for system session variables.
A common use for nonsystem session variables is setting user filters. For example, we could define a nonsystem variable called SalesRegion that would be initialized to the name of the user’s sales region.
We could then set a security filter for all members of a group that would allow them to view only data pertinent to their region.
    2. difference between dynamic repository variables and non-system session variables?
    Dynamic Repository Variables:-
We initialize dynamic repository variables in the same way as static variables, but the values are refreshed by data returned from queries. When defining a dynamic repository variable, we will create an initialization block or use a pre-existing one that contains a SQL query. We will also set up a schedule that the Oracle BI Server will follow to execute the query and periodically refresh the value of the variable.
Note: When the value of a dynamic repository variable changes, all cache entries associated with a business model that reference the value of that variable will be purged automatically. Each query can refresh several variables—one variable for each column in the query. We schedule these queries to be executed by the Oracle BI Server.
    Hope this help's

  • Number of Elements at this level --------------( 1 for Dimension Total)' ?

    Hi All,
If we check the Dimension Hierarchy Property ..there is option like ‘Number of Elements at this level --------------( 1 for Dimension Total)’
‘Number of Elements at this level --------------( 1 for Dimension Total)’ ? in Dimension Hierarchy
What is the use of it ?

Number of Elements - What is it?

  • Number of elements  to  be defined at  logical level

In the Business Model and Mapping layer, dimension >Logical Level >> number of elements at this logical level
I have come across two different version of how to deal with this
First version - From the OBE and the admin server guide it says "The number does
not have to be exact, but ratios of numbers from one logical level to another should be accurate".
Second Version - a question from asked about what defines the number at the level as best practices
To set the number of elements at each level of a dimension, which number would you use?
    A. the number of columns in a logical table
    B. the number of levels in a dimension
    C. the number of dimensions in a business model
    D. The number of tables in a physical model
    E. the number of distinct rows in physical column
    Question is
what is the rule to set the number of elements at this level?
If its been set depending upon the rows in the table . what will happen if the rows gets added every hour ??

The ratio between the levels is what is important I believe. BI Server will use this information to determine which aggregate source to use. You should use the number of distinct rows as the value.
You can also right click the hieracny and use "Estimate Levels" to auto-populate the numbers for you.

    Hi deeba,
Its not mandatory to specify the number of elements in hierarchy....if you wont mention also by default it takes the value of 1.....Above vino gave you the link for explanation.

  • Digital I/O Voltage Logic Level Compatibility

I think the PCI6534 High-Speed Digital I/O board can meet my application needs in terms of being able to transfer the required amount of data at the required speed using an appropriate protocol in which the I/O board interfaces with an FPGA that is collecting data from an ADC. However, the FPGA can only be programmed to handle voltage logic levels up to 3.3 V LVCMOS. From reviewing the specifications of the I/O board, it is 5 V TTL/CMOS compatible. The FPGA would be able to produce sufficient logic levels to drive the I/O board with sufficient noise margin, but I don't think that the FPGA could handle a 5V input from the I/O board on it's I/O pins. The FPGA would be damaged. I would like to avoid placing as much hard
ware on the evaluation board as possible. Are there any application solutions from NI that can circumvent this problem? I am currently looking at other I/O boards to see if they can handle 3.3V compatibility as well as investigating different voltage level translation solutions that can be placed between the I/O board and the FPGA. Thank you for your time and suggestions.

    I see 4 options:
    1. Try it with the 6534, and maybe use some resistors in a resistor network or pull up/ pull downs to limit the voltage.(being careful not to blow any ports)
    2. Try a 3v to 5v converter chip, the DAQ card does run up to 800mA of current at 5V out to a pin on the connector blocks, you can power the chips off of that.(this would add delays, but at least the would be constant and minimal)
    3. Try looking for a DAQ card that is isolated (PCI6527 or equivalent) or one with an external reference input. Some of the NI cards have an external voltage reference pin in the card which would allow you to substitute a 3v reference for the standard 5v.
    4. Use an analog output card to run digital. Some of the analog cards will have speed comperable to a fast d
    igital one.
The good thing about most NI hardware is that you can use the terminal blocks as a good place to hide extra parts like pull up resistors and such.

  • Number of Elements - What is it?

    Hi,
I am trying to ramp up on OBIEE, and I am going through the OBE tutorials.
In creating levels in the dimensional hierarchies, the tutorial has you specify a field called "Number of elements at this level". It doesn't really explain what it's used for, or give guidelines on what to enter for this field. Could someone please explain it a little further? I would really appreciate it!
    Thanks,
    Kevin

From what I know , it is number of distinct values at that level in physical table.
E.g. at region level it is
select count distinct region from physical table.
Not sure how this information is exactly used by BI server. The number does not have to exact but the ratio has to be approximate.

  • Odbc driver for DG-UX TRU 64 -please HELP

can anyone tell me where to find one that will anable unix process to talk to oracle db?,
also since i telent to access the DB from a pc(win 95 do i need to instal for both for client i.e win 95 and also for the server (DG-UX)or would just server be fine?
    Thanking you
    alka

I suspect this is going to be a rather tall order. Oracle's ODBC driver is a Windows-only product, so your PC would be able to connect to the database easily. I have heard of Solaris ODBC drivers, but I'm not sure who produces them (possible Merant). I've never heard of a company releasing DG-UX ODBC drivers.
The reason our ODBC driver is Windows-only is that ODBC relies on a number of components, i.e. the ODBC Driver Manager, which Microsoft provides. ODBC drivers for other products requires that these components be rewritten for the new platform, which is a very difficult task.

Query optimization is based on the order of the tables in the FROM clause of the generated SQL. Tables with many rows appear before tables with fewer rows. This order can be important especially for RDBMS that lack an optimizer feature.
It's no more the case with the actual databases.
Example for Oracle : Query optimizer
    http://gerardnico.com/wiki/database/oracle/query_optimizer/start
By modifying the number of element, you can change their order in the FROM clause but I never test it.

  • ODBC Level 3 driver

Is there a ODBC level 3(or higher) driver for a winnt client connecting to a Oracle server version 7.3.4?

You should have no problem connecting an Oracle8 client machine to an Oracle7 database. It's still not clear to me whether your client machine must be running Oracle 7, like the database, or whether it can be running an Oracle 8 client.
If you must run Oracle 7 on the client, you won't be able to use an Oracle ODBC driver. Merant makes an ODBC driver for Oracle-- their Oracle 7 driver may be ODBC level 3.
For the record, future ODBC-specific questions should probably be addressed to the ODBC forum here on OTN.

  • If Logical level mappings are blank in an LTS , what does it mean?

    Hi All,
I was trying to find this out in the forum but couldn't.
In my LTS, on the content tab, if i don't specify any "Aggregation, group by" information for the dims associated with my Fact table and keep it blank, then what does it mean? Would OBIEE treat this as at the detail level by default? So to test this, I created a logical fact and for its LTS, i didn't associate any logical level for dimensions. The query didn't give me any error and worked fine by using the correct join details.
Also when do we associate an LTS with the Total Level for a dim, what's the use because as I understand, this means all our measures from that LTS would be calculated for the total level of the dim and we can do this by creating level based measure and associating it with the total level of the dim.
I'll be thankful if somebody could explain me this in detail or direct me to a relevant documentation/ blog
    Thanks,
    Ronny

    Hi,
When you have only one logical Table Source(LTS).
You don't specify the logical levels. By default it would consider the detail level of the logical levels mapped to the fact table.
When you have Multiple logical Table Source(LTS).
The concept of Multiple LTS comes into picture when you have multiple sources. The BI server picks the optimum logical source depending upon the fields (columns) selected. And also depends on the Number of element set while creating the dimension hierarchies. Refer-http://gerardnico.com/wiki/dat/obiee/level_number_element
For example- Suppose you have two logical table source Fact 1 and Fact 2 and logical levels( dimension hierarchies are created for two dimensions Dim 1 and Dim 2).
For the first Fact 1 source logical level is mapped only with Dim 1 and Fact 2 is mapped to Dim 2.
(You need to decide which fact source to hit depending upon the dimensions used in the report.)
Then in the report when you select Dim 1 (by means of column selector/filters) then Fact 1 source will be hit and same appears in the query.
Then in the report when you select Dim 2 (by means of column selector/filters) then Fact 2 source will be hit and same appears in the query.
One more situation where you have mapped Fact 1 with Dim 1 First level of aggregation and Fact 2 with Dim 1 with Detailed level. Then the BI server picks depending upon the user's request. If the request data can be pulled from the detailed level ( which tends to be optimum then picks from the second source).
So, its always better to set the logical source and check the query, if its hitting the correct sources according to the requirements.

    MuRam
