Number of Masters

Hi,
I was just wondering if the forum had any thoughts on the acceptible(optimal), number of master sites that could be used on a large global system with a slow network and very few data changes.
TIA
Marc

I'm not sure if there's a limit to that list or not, but some of my themes have 30-40 masters. This glitch seems to be very hard to get rid of. For my themes, I generally stay in the SAME file and don't copy/paste other masters into the file, if you did that, it would result in what you've got now, but it still doesn't explain why moving them ALL to a new file didn't fix it.
Have you saved the theme, created a new document, then applied the theme to that to see if it shows all the masters in that one? If so, simply create your preview slide and resave that NEW one as a Theme.

  • G/L Accounts for Masters

If there are N number of Masters  think 4000 masters consisting of several groups, after creating all Masters shall we also Define G/L accounts for all 4000 Masters.
After Defining shall we assign also . If I am wrong please guide me.
    Regards
    P.Narender

    Narender,
You can certainly do that.  But my advice would be to plan all the G/L Account requirement in advance and create them first and then begin importing or adding Items and Item Groups and so on.
If you have the GL Accounts defined then it will be easier for you to add their Account determination as you add the Item Group (Only if you are doing GL Determination by Item Group)
If this Item group was not planned earlier then its fine, but if you know in advance then it would be a good practise to create the required GL's first.

  • Can't reconnect Missing Referenced Masters

I have a library which is a mixture of Managed and Referenced Masters.  Library on SSD and Referenced Masters on HDD.
A very small number of Masters have gone AWOL and I can't reconnect them.  Using Spotlight, I can locate the actual Masters with Finder - they are just where I expect them to be, in a subfolder in a Folder called "Aperture Masters" on my HDD.
    Here is an example
The badge on this image looks like this
When I choose Update from Master, I get this message
So then I try to reconnect via "Locate Referenced Files..." and get this message
These images are findable by filtering on "Missing" or "Offline"
All but one have the badge with the arrow and the yellow triangle.
One has a badge like this (a kind of inverted MobileMe sourced badge
Any ideas on how to reconnect?

Interesting.  The User Manual I was reading is a PDF and it defines the badge as this.  Note that the badge is flipped in the two versions and the PDF doesn't mention FaceBook or Flickr.
Seems I should re-download the User Manual

  • Replication of account master with 2 diff number ranges to ECC.

    HI All,
    Wish you happy new Year....
I have a doubt in Master Data replicating from CRM to ECC.
Here is a situation where i  have to create 2 number ranges with groupings in CRM for prospects and has to replicate to ECC SD. I heard that only one number range(ie Z1) can only be used to replicate to ECC and ( I.e. Z2) number range masters can not flow to ECC.so can you guys please tell me what are all the problems in replicating the master to ECC if i use 2 number ranges with groupings.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Arun

    Hi Deepak,
Have you downloaded R/3 sales area(ie,. org + distribution Channel+division) to CRM? If you are not using standalone CRM scenario, then you have to maintain R/3 sales area in and then download it into CRM through customizing adapter object dnl_cust_s_area.
Then you have assign R/3 sales org to ur created organization in CRM and define distribution channel and division in the attribute tab of ppoma_crm.
Kindly check have u done all the above mentioned steps?

  • Help in managing Aperture library

    Thanks for your time.
I think I am getting too many photos on my Mac. I'd like to be able to effectively manage the images there but I am having a hard time figuring out where to get help.
Is there a way to see what images are using the most space? There are some I have worked in external editors and I notice they are coming back into Aperture as much larger files, i.e., 1.5 MB before and 27.5 MB after.
And is there a good FAQ someplace about general dusting and cleaning and deleting of unneeded files?
    Thanks!

Modern digicam workflows require increasing amounts of mass storage. Sorting/deleting IMO only provide limited benefit. Bottom line is image handlers need lots of scalable mass storage.
Single-drive computers are limiting to the volume handling of modern digicam image files. Those of us with single-internal-drive computers like laptops or iMacs IMO should use a Referenced-Masters Library. If you are not using Referenced Masters now is the time to set up with Referenced Masters rather than Managed.
External drives that are not eSATA decrease speed, so your Library should stay on the internal drive. Use external drives to relocate data from your internal drive so that there is room for a (Referenced-Masters) Library there.
When using Referenced Masters the Library does not actually hold the large Master images themselves. That way even a laptop drive can hold an Aperture Library of 100,000 images by referencing Master images that live on external drives.
To store Master images by "Reference," when you go to Import on the right hand side of the import window you must select "Store files in their current location." Obviously at some point referenced Masters must be on external drives to keep from overfilling any single internal drive.
In general IMO graphics users do not give enough attention to hard drives setup that really is very important for graphics performance optimization. A few comments:
    • Aperture users' mass storage needs tend to increase very quickly.
    • The location, size/speed/fullness and connection method of hard drives can have a huge impact on performance within any given specific setup. Internal better than external; with external eSATA better than FW800 which is better than FW400, and USB2 unacceptable except for backup-only.
    • Hard drives slow as they fill. A good rule of thumb is not to fill any drive more than 70%, and for best speed keep important drives no more than 50% full. Drives will operate more full but at a performance cost.
    • Without careful management a single internal laptop hard drive will become overfilled.
    • Your laptop allows up to 500 GB internal drive size. Since drives slow as they fill, an option is to replace the internal HD with a 500 GB drive and keep it less than half full to optimize operation.
Some of the reasons that I prefer Referenced Masters to Managed Masters are
    • The much smaller Library is easy to keep on a faster underfilled drive.
    • Vaults are much smaller; hence easier and more likely that multiple Vaults will be created.
    • An infinite number of Masters and originals can be stored on as many drives as necessary and backed up ad nauseam using the Finder, backup software, Time Machine, whatever. Using Referenced Masters, Aperture (and any anomalies that a complex app like Aperture might introduce) are not in the Masters backup loop.

It's a P2P chat that we're in and he's tried promoting me twice with no effect. This is also happenign to one other member of the group whom he wishes to promote. Does anyone know why this might be happening? Is there a maximum number of MASTERs that are allowed in a chat or something? Any help appreciated. Cheers.

  • Best way to move projects & albums into just folders & projects?

    Hello,
Could anyone recommend the best method for moving lots of files through albums, projects,
and folders without  confusing Aperture about the location of adjustments or masters?  I am
sure it's not that hard but I have three major concerns before I even try to touch things the
way I have them set up.
My goal is to go from bloated, oversized projects and albums (I should not have been importing
to albums to begin with) and separate them into more varied and numerous folders and projects.
I will try to focus on one topic of my confusion at a time, so that this thread will not go everywhere,
    in a random directions:
    1) The biggest mistake I THINK I've made was randomly importing files from my camera
into whatever I felt like importing them into, so my library has now become a random grab-bag
of folders, projects, and albums.  I did not know their relationship to each other at the time, so
i used them as generic "containers" for each other. LOL  Anyway, what is going to happen when
I start moving all this stuff around, and some images (like the ones in albums) are virtual,
         while others are not?
    2) I want to move but not copy from one project to the other. Can I do so by means of drag
and drop? Or is there a smarter way?
    3) For anyone who has done this before, what method(s) did you use?
    4) I know I can delete albums without any problem of losing a file, but what if I made
some of albums from files in the Library, which do not have projects containing them?
Also, why does the formatting on my paragraph make it look like look like complete crap?

    Hi Waxy,
So that leaves me with the question, if I want to move files from an overweight project, say 1000 photos to 3 projects, each containing 333 photos, it is as simple as shift clicking the 333 at a time, and drag dropping them from the larger project to three pre-made smaller projects?  The concern I have is that, if I accidentally copy something I will have no confidence that what I am deleting is the proper thing to delete.
Yes, it is that easy.  Select and drag-and-drop to a different project.  The destination of your DND should be a project in the library inspector (left side pane).  This actually performs a move.  I.e., you have nothing to worry about with respect to deleting the wrong thing, since the move happens, rather than a copy.
One last thing, how do you see just the number of masters in a project?
Open Aperture while holding down the alt/option key.  This is the way to switch to a different library.  When you select any library (if you have only one, that will be already selected), Aperture will give you a count of masters and versions.
P.S. what happens to files when you delete a project?  The files stay behind in the library?
Nope.  Well, maybe sort of... When you delete a project, you are indicating that you don't want Aperture to handle the photos in that project any more.  Masters will go to the Aperture trash, and you can retrieve them from there until you empty the trash.  When emptying the trash with Managed masters, Aperture will put them in the system trash.  If they are referenced, Aperture queries you to find out if you want to keep them where they are or move them to the system trash.
A project containing 4 albums contains a total of "535" files.
The total number of images in all four albums equals "546".
How are you counting these?  You may be comparing apples to oranges.
Another album, that resides inside of a folder, but not inside of a  project, contains 133 images.  They should be inside a labeled project (they appear not to be, since they have been physically dragged and dropped away from the original project, which is apparently unlabled)
Not sure what you mean by labeled and unlabeled.  However all photos are part of a project.  You cannot "drag away" from a project into an album, even if that album is part of a different project.  No matter what, your master is still housed inside a project.
You can have Aperture show you the "Project path" of a photo.  Check the "General" metadata view.  Project path is in mine (although I do not remember if I did that on purpose).
C: Is there a right click or menu option which simplifies some of this stuff?
I guess I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to accomplish.  Maybe with your definition of labeled and unlabeled your question will be clearer.

  • Rebuild Database did not reduce the database size

I just completed a rebuild database. The rebuild completed much quicker than anticipated and in the end the did not reduce in size.
This is my first rebuild and since original installation I have deleted a number of masters. From my understanding thumbnails and previews are not deleted when the master is deleted. In order to delete the thumbnails and previews the db must be rebuilt. Is this correct?
The db is over 31.1gb. The rebuild took approx 10 minutes and when completed the db size was still 31.1gb. There was a message during the rebuild that read "Recovering projects". I was expecting to see stats showing previews and thumbnails being generated in the activity window but don't see it. Has the db been rebuilt?
    Thanks for any assistance.

Rebuilding the database is for disaster-recovery, not file maintenance. I certainly wouldn't do it unless something was fundamentally broken and the application didn't run.
"rebuilding" the database seems to do the following:
    (1) remove the database file completely (not even to the trash, it destroys the database utterly)
    (2) run through the plist files and reconstruct a brand-new database from them all
I checked this (on an empty library) using hard-links from the commandline, and step (1) above scared me sufficiently that I'd only rebuild the database as an absolute last resort.
Now, 31GB seems a lot for a database that only took 10 minutes to rebuild - are you sure you're not telling us the size of the library (to find the database size, right-click on the library and select view-package-contents, then open the 'Aperture.aplib' folder and find the size of the 'Library.apdb' file. That's the file you're changing when you 'rebuild database'.)
If you're telling us the size of the entire aperture library instead, then that size will be completely dominated by the master RAW files you've imported. I'd guess your library will be less than 10MB.
My understanding is that previews are deleted (since they're stored as separate files alongside the master image, if you look in the folder hierarchy), but thumbnails aren't. The thumbnails are aggregated together into one-file-per-project (presumably for speed of access), and I'd guess the space is reclaimed for future use, but the file doesn't get any smaller. That's a classic trade-off for speed-of-access, and users like us are normally very keen on things being fast

  • Select X# of variables from array at the furthest possible intervals.

Ok, I've been working on this one for a while and I'm thinking I'm either missing something really stupidly simply because of it, or I've got my equation wrong still.
Basically, what I'm trying to do is select X number of items out of an array.  The only catch is, these items need to be as far apart from each other as possible.  So for example, one time I might have an array with 93 items in it which I need to grab 36 of them, evenly spaced through the array (so the first one would be the first one in the array, and the last one would be the last in the array.
How would I go about telling the script to grab the correct array values (the most evenly spaced ones), ending up with only the X amount of output values?
    Thanks!
    dgolberg

Hmm, this is kind of a different perspective than what I was originally thinking, but it might work.  I'll have to test it out, though it would require me running the array twice; the first time picking out the specific ones and splicing them out of the array, the second simply grabbing the remainder.
To put it a little differently, what I was originally thinking is cycling through an array (this array's length and content varries depending on the input), and would grab the the "masters" out of the array at the set intervals (these intervals are where I'm having the most trouble), and anything it finds matching a set range for the current loop cycle that isn't considered a "master" is placed under the master as a "slave" (or essentially, a duplicate).  Below is an example of one of the loops I'm using (I have 3 nested loops in order to cycle through 3 "dimensions" of values) with my last attempt at this issue (which is only correct in certain ranges rather than all ranges like I need).
var DF = tA.length / mNum;  //tA.length is the array length, mNum is the number of masters desired from that array.  For example, array length of 100, mNum of 75; DF = 1.333333....
    var master = 0;
for(var z=range[1];z<range[2]+2;z=z+5) { //Cycles through the array 5 units at a time (to speed up the script)... There are 2 other loops above this using the y and z variables seen in the if statements below.
for(var i=0;i<tA.length;i++) { //Cycles through the tempArray to find matches to the current cycle of the above loops, +/- 2
               if(tA[i][0] <= x + 2 && tA[i][0] >= x - 2 && tA[i][1] <= y + 2 && tA[i][1] >= y - 2 &&tA[i][2] <= z + 2 && tA[i][2] >= z - 2 && master < 1) { //Checks for a match, and if the master is less than 1, it sets the match as a master.
master = master + DF; //Adds the DF (short for Dupe Frequency) to the current master number.
                   outArray.push(tA[i]); //Set the match as a master
              } else if(tA[i][0] <= x + 2 && tA[i][0] >= x - 2 && tA[i][1] <= y + 2 && tA[i][1] >= y - 2 &&tA[i][2] <= z + 2 && tA[i][2] >= z - 2 && master >= 1) { //Checks for a match, and if the master is greater than 1, it sets a duplicate.
                   master = master - 1;
outArray[outArray.length-1].push(tA[i][3]); //Set the match's name as a slave under the last master
Basically, using the code above; I need it to somehow (while cycling through the tA.length loop), figure out how often it should grab either a slave or a master (depending on which there are more of), and then the next X number of matches are either a master or a slave (again, depending on which there are more of).  So, for example, if there are 25 masters, out of 100 total items in the array, it would pick one master, the next 3 matches would be slaves, and then it would pick another master, 3 more slaves, etc. etc.  Where things start getting out of whack is when the intervals start ending up in fractions (say every 1.5 is a slave).  Obviously, you can't grab half of one, so you'd need to do a pattern more like: 1 master, 1 slave, 1 master, 2 slaves, 1 master, 1 slave; etc.
The part I'm having trouble with is getting a working equation that knows how often to pick the (in the example above) slaves based on this varying pattern, and do so accurately regardless of the array length to master/slave ratio (the above method seems to get further off as the mNum gets closer to the tA.length).
I guess, more than anything really, I'm just having trouble getting the math to work out right as I'm apparently using the wrong equation in my code.  If anyone has any ideas though, let me know.

  • Copying my libraries using BASH cp broke the library bundles

    Hi there,
I needed to move a huge amount of data in a couple of libraries around and doing that in Finder did not work, either the Mac crashed or Finder quit with errors. The libraries were OK, the filesystem was OK and so on. I ended up copying libraries from one filesystem to another using
    cp -pPR foo /foobar/foo
The target filesystem was a share on a NAS device.
I noticed that the library bundle does not seem to be recognized as such anymore in Aperture, it won't open it although when I preselect it in the 'Switch Libraries' window, it correctly displays the number of masters and versions.
In Finder, that library now shows up as
    foobar.aplibrary
    Instead of just foobar.
Can someone explain what went wrong and how to fix it? With one of the smaller libraries, I managed to do this to fix it:
    Create a new, empty library.
Copy the contents of the package folder of the broken library into the contents of the package folder of the new library, overwriting any files.
That worked for a small library. I'm trying for a huge library now, that takes ages to copy. So maybe can cut into this and just help me out with some advice?
    thanks,
    Tobias

See  Aperture: Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library
Basically the Aperture library does not like being on a non OS X formated voulme.
The reason for the Finder nor ewcongnizing the library is most likely caused by the loss of the extended attributes that indicated theat the library was a package. If you do an ls -l on the library does the name end in a '@'? If not you definitly lost the extended attributes.
All in all messing wiht the Aperture library in the manner you did is not a good idea. As far as fixing it wihtout knowing the whole stoty that will be difficult.  You might want to just drop back to your backup and strart over. It will be a lot easier in the long run.

  • MRM between 6 and 5.2.

    Hi,
is replica from rev.6 to 5.2 supported?
    TIA

Yes, replication to and from a 5.2 instance is supported in 6.0.
However, since the features introduced in 6.0 haven't been back-ported on 5.2, replication priority cannot be enforced, and the limit in the number of masters (which has been removed in 6.x) is still there.
Note 1: the 5.2 instances in your topology will not show up in the web console (the new admin gui) so you will have to create the replication agreements through the CLI.
Note 2: if you use password policy, make sure DS6 is configured to keep the password policy compatible with that of 5.2. (dsconf set-server-prop pwd-compat-mode:DS5-compatible-mode). If you don't remember changing this, you should be fine since it's the default value, but checking never hurts (dsconf get-server-prop pwd-compat-mode)

    Ignacio,
Here is some detail on the XML file from a similar question
    posted internally last week:
JDeveloper 2.0 Beta (Build 184) and beyond include a subset of
the Java Business Objects functionality whose full capabilities
are targetted for the JDeveloper 3.0 release.
In particular, JDev 2.0 uses the JBO framework for its data
access. JBO uses XML to represent object metadata, so a byproduct
of using JBO in JDeveloper 2.0 is that for each named connection
that you define, you'll end up with an XML-file which represents
the definitions of the updateable tables in your application.
These XML definitions are designed to easily be able to "roll
forward" into the JDev 3.0 release when you'll be able to
associate business logic with the "Entity Object"
definitions they represent and have those rules enforced by the
    framework.
The XML file includes a reference to "jbo.dtd" and the JDev
runtime will find that DTD in the CLASSPATH at runtime, and it
typically resides in the jbomt.zip file (which in build 184 was
    probably still called just jbo.zip).
The JBO data manager layer in 2.0 (and 3.0) gives the following
    key benefits:
    (*) Updatable Join Views
Join any number of tables in your SQL, and pick one primary
table to be updateable in the UI.
    (*) Automatic Master/Detail Coordination
Link queries together and have detail data synchronized with
the current master record, to any level.
    (*) Hierarchical Record Caching
Make pending changes to detail rows for any number of
masters, then commit them all together.
    (*) Pessimistic Locking
Lock rows in the database as soon as the user "changes" them.
    (*) Use of ROWID
Select whether to use a Primary Key or Oracle ROWID for data
    access.

  • Creation of Auto Number while creating Masters

    Hi Experts
Please let me know the process of creating Auto Generated Numbers while creating Masters.
I have requirement of creating Masters for -
    1. Customers
    2. Items
(Where Auto Generated Numbers are required).
    Regards

    Hi Prashant,
If you want auto generated number then as sugeested in the above post you have to go for Key Generation.
In Console where you define remote system ,there you have to make keygeneration Yes and specify the start and end limit in from and to.
Now whenever a record is created and syndicated to this particular remotye system for which key generation is set ,system will assign a autogenerated number.
Without syndication number will not be generated.
And if you want to maintain different number ranges for different lookup values then go for qualified number range.
Or  if you simple want auto generated number starting from 1 to maintain count of records in MDM then maintain a field with type autoid.
    Regards,
    Neethu Joy

I recently used fireworks, but at startup it suddenly asked me for my serial number for CS6 master collection. upon entering the serial number it states that this is invalid!

  • How can I find the non-truncated serial number of CS4 masters collection installed on my Mac?

I got CS4 Masters Collection about 3 years ago when I was still using a PowerPC G5 Mac. Since then, I've upgraded my setup with Intel machines. I'd like to use Adobe Premiere Pro on my MacBook Pro, as I cannot run it on my G5. I found a download link on Adobe's servers for the old Adobe Premiere CS4 trial, and I downloaded it. Since it isn't installed on the G5, I should be able to use it on my intel machine, right? So I went into Help/System Info on one of the other CS4 apps installed on my G5, and found the serial code, but it was shortened to 20 characters, when the registration requires 24. How can I find the last 4 characters so I can activate Premiere? I found a guide, but it only works for PC's. Please help, I'm tired of using FCPX.

No, that is not rue, Adobe limits the supply of their software explicitly to Adobe themselfs and to their contract distributers. And the other problem is that the serial is stcked on the package of the DVDs. So, if someone passes his original DVDs to someone else he gives him also the serial. He has no possibility to hinder someone the use of these SN. So he has given away the proof of his licence.
