Number of processors

Hi,
about hardware architecture, I want to know how many processor I need for my Oracle DB. It is said that the effective throughput per CPU is roughly eight times that of the disk subsystem.
I can not understand why. Would any one be so kind to explain me please ?
Many thnaks.

Thank you Syed. but here is a thumb rule :
N°CPU=Max(users*Avg.queryies per user*PQO Degree/8,4)
from Oracle DBA Guide (BERT SCALZO , PRENTICE HALL, Page 44). But I can not understant why divided by 8 since the effective throughput per CPU is roughly eight times that of the disk subsystem. That is what I can not understand.
regards.

  • Counting number of processor?

    Hello
Can I count number of CPU using java? Is there any library which has this ability? Thank you very much in advance.
    Regards,
    Tinnapat C.

In the forthcoming version of J2SDK 1.5 there will be a package named java.lang.management, and an interface called OperatingSystemMXBean. One of its methods returns the number of CPUs available to the instance of the JVM running.
It depends on the processor count reported by the operating system. If you have a Pentium 4 with hyperthreading enabled your operating system reports 2 "logical" CPUs although you know that you have just only a physical CPU chip in your machine. As I haven't tested the "getAvailableProcessors" method in a HT machine I can't say exactly the result, if the getAvailableProcessors returns the number of logical CPUs or physical CPUs.
(Obviously if you have a machine with 32 CPUs but you're running in a "domain" or a "virtual machine" that do not expose all CPUs to your process, or if some of the CPUs are disabled (it's a common fact among IBM server machines - the CPU chips are physically present, but don't work - just pay for the additional CPUs and they will unlock them), the JVM will report a smaller number. It depends in the hardware.)
public interface OperatingSystemMXBeanThe management interface for the operating system on which the Java virtual machine is running.
A Java virtual machine has a single instance of the implementation class of this interface. This instance implementing this interface is an MXBean that can be obtained by calling the ManagementFactory.getOperatingSystemMXBean() method or from the platform MBeanServer method.
    int getAvailableProcessors()
Returns the number of processors available to the Java virtual machine.

    HI..
Read here >  Requirements for Mac OS X v10.5
Your Mac meets the requirements but make sure there's enough free disk space.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.

There are many possible reasons for that.
Most likely a corrupted cookie or cache file for that site may be responsible.
On the Safari menu bar got to Safari -> Empty Cache

    Hi HarmitClaire,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your MacBook Air is not charging as expected. In this situation there are troubleshooting steps that I would recommend. Please use the attached article as a resource for steps to help you resolve this situation.

Confirm the correct wattage AC adapter for the computer. A power adapter rated for a lower wattage than is required for the system may not reliably charge the computer. For assistance identifying the proper adapter, review Intel Based Mac notebooks: Identifying the right power adapter and power cord--US. Additional adapter troubleshooting is available in Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters. If issues persist please reset the SMC.

  • Maximum Number of processors

    Hi,
I am just wondering is there any limitation in number of processors for oracle.
    If yes.
I like to know about the maximum number of processors oracle can support and the version information
Please guide me to get this information.
    Thanks
    Elango

I don't think that there is any limit from the Oracle side because it is the OS which takes care of the different process and so it's the OS which balances the load between the different processors.
For example it works on a Sun Fire E25K with 72 processor. But don't forget that the licensing cost per processor is somthing like 40k$.

  • SQL Server number of processors limitation and licenses

In the following link by Microsoft they are showing the number of processors one instance of SQL Server is limited to use
Compute Capacity Limits by Edition of SQL Server
    And also they are saying:
"These limits apply to a single instance of SQL Server. They represent the maximum compute capacity that a single instance will use. They do not constrain the server upon which the instance may be deployed. In fact deploying multiple instances of SQL
Server on the same physical server is an efficient way to use the compute capacity of a physical server with more sockets and/or cores than the capacity limits below."
    My question:
Does this implies that when I licenses the server I licenses all server processors once regardless of the number SQL Server instances installed on that one server.
For example if I have one server that has 32 cores. I have to buy licenses for all 32 cores once with amount X, but I can install as much instances as I want and the amount X will remain X, and it will not be:
X * number of instances installed
    ... is this true ?

    Thanks Diramoh...
Just to make sure that you've answered what I've
    exactly asked about:
ONLY under [Server+CAL] licensing model: If I paid amount X for license, this amount will NOT defer depending on
the number of SQL Server instances installed on ONE OS.
Example: if I paid 1000$ for licensing a server under
[Server+CAL] licensing model, and I installed 1 instance of SQL Server, those 1000$ will remain 1000$ even if I install another two SQL server instances on the same OS where the 1st is installed.
Under Core-Base licensing model: If I paid amount X for licensing SQL Server on Y number of cores on ONE OSE, then I installed another N number of SQL Server on that same OSE, then the total amount for licensing will be X * N.
Example: if I paid 1000$ for licensing SQL Server Standard under Core-base licensing model on 4 core machine that has MS Windows Server 2008 R2, then I installed another SQL Server Standard edition on that same Windows Server, the total amount of licensing
    will be 1000$ * 2 = 2000$
Please confirm the above two points are correct and that that what you meant to say.
Note: The numbers in the examples are just for example :)

  • Dtermine number of processor on 2 terabytes database

I want to select the oracle server for 10g that will store 2 - 2.5 terabytes of data. Does any body knows how to calculate the number of processors for 64 bit machine for above configuration.
    Thanks

It depends heavily on what sort of processing you are going to be doing-- data volume is only one piece of the puzzle. If you have 100 users connecting to do ad-hoc queries, you will need a lot more CPU's than you would if you have a few reports generated in a batch every evening. It also depends on your platform, different CPU's have vastly different performance characteristics.

  • Setting number of processors available to JVM

Is there a way from the command line to restrict the number of processors available to the JVM at run time?
I have an application which seems to have problems on a uniprocessor configuration and my workstation is a multiprocessor system.
I can, of course, go to a different machine to test but that's a bit of a nuisance as you might imagine.
Is there something obvious on the command line that I've missed?

    It would be OS specific.
And also something that a OS specific forum would be more able to answer.
Supposedly unix variants at least sometimes have this. I can't recall anyone claiming that windows does.

How many processor of license for oracle i have. I think its 48. Can you confirm me in this regards
    regards
    Nick

You have 24 physical CPUs, each of which have 2 cores, thus giving you 48 cores, correct? If so, in order to license that server today, you would need either 48*0.25 = 12, 48*0.5=24, or 48*0.75=36 processor licenses depending on the type of CPUs you use.
However, when you licensed the software in the past, though, the licensing terms were fixed as of that point in time. It is entirely possible that
    - Oracle was using different logic to calculate the number of required processor licenses for multi-core CPUs today than it was in the past and you only needed 1 processor license for every 6 cores
    - Your company negotiated a different core multiplier than is or was in the standard licensing agreement
    - Your company negotiated some other sort of exception that allowed them to buy just 8 processor licenses
So you would need to read through the specifics of your license agreement to determine what, specifically, your company agreed to in order to determine whether you have enough licenses. If you are short some licenses, you would also need to read the agreement to determine how you go about rectifying that (i.e. can you purchase additional processor licenses under the original terms or do you have to add licenses under the current license terms, etc). Of course, I'm sure your Oracle Sales rep would be more than happy to assist you in determining whether you need to purchase additional licenses.

  • Maximum number of processor sockets in Windows Server 2012 Datacenter and Standard

I have found no documentation on the technical number of supported processor sockets supported by Windows Server 2012 for the Standard and Datacenter editions.
Some donation websites like Techsoup claim that Datacenter supports 64 physical processors and Standard 8, but I can find no authoritative confirmation of this and those look like extrapolation from Windows Server 2008 R2.
So what are the maximum supported # of processor sockets, assuming you have licenses for all of them, for Datacenter and Standard? Do they differ by edition?
In addition, is it true that the total # of supported logical processors in a single system is 640 w/o Hyper-V? It was originally reported to be that, but since Hyper-V's number doubled from 160 in the Beta to 320 in the RC and RTM, did this double too?

You might find some of the information you are looking for here -
http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/C/A/2CA38362-37ED-4112-86A8-FDF14D5D4C9B/WS%202012%20Feature%20Comparison_Hyper-V.pdf.  I know there is one change that is not reflected there.  Recently the maximum number of virtual machines supported
in a cluster was raised to 8,000 instead of the 4,000 reflected in this document.
The maximum number of sockets for Standard would be two because that is the maximum number that the license supports.  Standard has never supported 8.  Prior to 2012, it supported 4, and then the licensing changed with 2012 so that Standard would
be sold per processor (socket) with a maximum of two.  Technically, the binaries are the same for Standard and Datacenter, so you can most likely get it to run with more somehow, but it is not a supported configuration.
The maximum number of sockets for Datacenter would be 64 - that has not changed from 2008.  I make this statement based on the fact that Datacenter supports a maximum of 64 virtual CPUs when run as a virtual machine.  Virtual machines don't have
the distinction of socket versus hyper-thread versus core.  They see what is presented to them as a processor.  But, I doubt very much that you will find any off-the-shelf 64 socket systems; most vendors are relying on the core densities instead
of socket density in order to deliver the horsepower.  The above referenced document still shows 320 as the maximum number of logical processors, with or without Hyper-V.

My question this Blade server how many Physical server can insert 1or 2 or 3 ?
I have found processors socket 2 means support types of processor not number of physical processors.
UCS B440 model support Either 2 or 4 Intel® Xeon® E7-4800 or E7-8800 series processors but its Processors Socket 4 that means this model support 4 physical processors ?
For how many physical support , i need to find out Technical Specification  and no relation socket with number of physical processor ?
