Hi Guru's
how do we decide , how many servers we needed for hyperion essbase ,planning ,smartview and frs. currently we are using 2 servers . one application and one web . we could have done it in one server as well . i may be wrong . Just curious to know on what factors does it depend to go for 2 or 3 servers. Does it depend on number of users or something else

It is very difficult to tell you without know much more than you provide. Factors include number of users, number of applications, how the different products will be used, configuration of the servers, stc. . For instance, I rarely put FR on the same server as other products since it can be such a resource hog. combining the web applications can make sense depending on resource available. I would bring in a good infrastructure consultant to ask the hard questions to be able to help you out.

Number managed servers per physical machine

Hi
I seem to remember reading somewhere that oracle recommend that you have 2 managed servers per physical machine. The reason I think was something to do with heap size or garbage collection.
Does anyone know for sure if oracle/bea did recommend 2 managed servers? And if so what is the reason for this.

There is no such restriction. The recommendation of the number of managed servers per machine would depend on each machines available resources.

2012 upgrade question, number of servers, SCOM, Forefront

I have a bit of confusion on how many servers I need to migrate from SCCM 2007 to 2012. I read many articles about upgrading the primary site side by side and the two DP servers I am using now. I am confused about SCOM, FSP and the 2003 Forefront Server.
All other server are currently 2008R2.
So my question, will I have to keep the Forefront and SCOM server or do these get integrated into the SCCM 2012 server?

Forefront Server has been discontinued and replaced by System Center Endpoint Protection Protection (SCEP). This is a ConfigMgr role now. SCOM is unrelated. You maintain that separately.

How do we decide the number of data base servers and application servers in BW ?
How does this number help in data load balance and reporting needs ?
Any hard n fast rule in the number of servers ?

Hi Mohan,
Check the number of application server in the T-code SM66.... and also u can check the it in Sm50 on appplication server basiss./.
From Sm37 u can see the application server Push button.. if u click on that also.. u can see the number of application servers in the system..
Get into the individual application server and check how many Dialogue and background WP's are free,,
If u see that the considerable number of WP are free(Waiting for task).. then u can shedule the loads..
If most of the WP are busy then u need to wait to trigger ur loads to maintain the load balancing..
If one Application server is too busy then u can check the other Application Servers in the systems..
And u can shedule the loads on a specific application sever level as well using the PC..

Lync 2013 - Number of FE servers in paired pools

Hi,
We have an Ent. Edition Lync 2013 pool with 4 FE servers, we would like to implement a second pool at a different location for disater recovery.
Does the DR pool which will be paired with production one need to have exactly the same number of FE servers or can it have less (i.e. 3) ?

You can have 1, or 3, or whatever number, it just has to be Enterprise to match Enterprise, you can't use Standard Edition with Enterprise for example.

That's not a statement on the number of servers, just the capacity to do what you need to do if you fail. It's sort of an obvious statement that speaks to load sharing among pools. Don't max out two pools and expect to be able to fail over to
one and run at full capacity.
In a DR situation, you may not need full capacity, so the amount of resources you'll be giving it will be based upon your own internal best practices.

Unknown Servers in Recent Items

I have a small network in my home over a Time Capsule and Airport Extreme. I have the Time Capsule set up as a server to use its hard drive. In my recent servers list under Recent Items, there are a number of servers with what appear to be Japanese characters. What is this?? I don't recognize any of these.

If I can help set your mind at rest, this is normal. If you look in the Finder preferences (if you can find them -- see below) they are fourth in the list of items to show on the desktop, and I would guess that this may be related.
The names you are seeing my be partitions on the disks you have been connecting to.
It sounds as if you have major disk corruption and the fact that it filled up suddenly suggests the Finder was unable to report the data correctly. If you have the data off (backed up) then you will lose nothing by trying to erase and then reinstalling the OS. If there are any problems during that process, it would indicate a defective hard disk and replacement is the best option.

Best way to configure search toplogoy for multiple servers farm??

My farm environment is 2 WFE and 2 App servers. Right now i am trying to configure Search Topology. what will be the best way to configure the search topology for this farm, so that query and crawling will be working perfectly. one thing i noticed with my
previous search application Crawl DB had grown 140 GB, i dont know why it happened. please look at the following screen shot, this the current topology but i want to distribute component to different server.

The best topology depends on whether you want it to be fault tolerant or not. For a fault tolerant design with this number of servers I normally create two Index Partitions 0 and 1 with each on one of the App servers. I then create Replicas of each
partition on the front end servers. I then put the query role on both web fronts ends and the crawl role on both Ap servers. So I end up with the following:
FE1 = Index Replica 0 + Query
FE2 = Index Replica 1 + Query
Ap1 = Index 0 + Crawl
Ap2 = Index 1 + Crawl

Max No Of Servers

I have a tape drive connected to a server which is running Data Protection Manager. I want to be able to backup data from 15-20 other servers to the tape drive connected to that server.
Is there a maximum number of servers which can be backed up by the server attached local tape drive, or is it unlimited? Having not used DPM before, I expect that it works like other 'traditional' backup applications such as BackupExec, NetBackup etc ie
I set the server with the tape drive connected to as a 'media server'. Is there a config guide available?
Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not sure what those 15-20 server are. Are they A) production servers you want to have backed up to tape individually, or are they B) DPM Servers that want to share the tape library ?
If A - DPM does not work that way. The DPM agent installed on the protected servers can only communicate with the agent on the DPM server protecting it and does not have direct access to the tape library. You need to add protection for the 15-20 servers
on the DPM server, and have DPM backup the servers data to the locally attached tape library on the DPM server.
If B - Then we do support tape library sharing between DPM servers. I'm not aware of any hard limit, but there would need to be enought drives and slots to accomodate all the DPM server requirements of free tapes to use for backups when scheduled.

Power-shell script to install scom agent to multiple servers

we are trying to upgrade/install scom 2012 r2 agents to our windows servers (300+) server via powershell script.
we are wanting the result to be written to csv file but we are facing difficulty in trying to find the object/value to look at to the put the condition against.
we found the script that does for ping(below part script) result but we want to capture any failure. is there anything we can use to achieve what we ant to do?

To connect to several servers

Hi,
I must make an application that calculates the number pi. Points will be created at random and will use the circle unit.
The user will say to the client the number to him of points that wishes to generate.
So, the client t will receive that number and it will distribute them between several servers. The servers will make the calculations (must work simultaneously) and will give back the result to client. Finally the client will gather the data that have provided the servers to him and will show the final value of pi.
The number of servers is a parameter that will fix at programming, but that must easily be modifiable.
I have read about a server and several clients; but now it's just the inverse.
How I can create several servers simultaneously? How I can connect a client to several servers so that these make the calculations simultaneously?
Any idea? Any reference?

Renew Machine Certificate for multiple Servers

Hi,
We have Windows 2003 Enterprise CA which issues certificates to servers which are used for various purpose like Wifi Authentication, Secure RDP. We have checked that the certificates are going to expire within few weeks. We want to renew certificates before
expiry but the number of servers is high so we cannot do it manually by logging into each server.
We doesn't have ACRS enabled for computer certificates and even if we configure it now that will not help.
Is there a way to renew the certificates for all the servers remotely.

I think that you're confusing Automatic Certificate Request Services and
autoenrollment. In your first post in this thread you mention ACRS, however
the above settings are for autoenrollment. ACRS is only for certificates
that are based upon V1 certificate templates and then only for machine
certificates. Autoenrollment on the other hand does not work for anything
less than V2 certificates and supports both machine and user certificates.
If you're using V1 certificate templates then you can set autoenrollment
settings in a GPO and it will not have any impact at all.

You can use one serwer only for everything (provided that you use classic application).
Number of servers depends on the number of planned applications, the number of users, number of entities, number of accounts, the amount of calculation...

Servers/VMs per pool

Is there a best practice document out there with recommendations/hard limits for the number of servers that should be in a pool or number of vms that should be in a specific pool?
I'm trying to determine how many servers per pool I should go with as a standard in our data center.

Max number of instances per Server

Good morning,
I've installed Oracle9i in a Windows 2000 Server with 1GB of memory. After that I've created several instances of Oracle DB. With 3 instances my server works acceptably, but after adding two mor instances I've begun to have some perfomance problems and the access speed has considerably decreased, so my question is, what is the maximum number of instances that the same Oracle server can support in order to optimize the access to the DB?

I am confronted with a similar problem. ie, we have got several instances on the basis of one application/one instance. I am asked to regroup all these instances to one and only one instance containing several schemas to reduce the number of servers, number of instances and on the way reduce the administrative ( dba ) tasks. As i have got some knowledge of dba, I thought of installing this instance under Oracle 10g like this : an application on its own tablespace and the backup of this tbs via rman. So when an application crashes, I can make use of TSPITR to bring the database to its initial ( stable ) status. My questions are :
1° any re-initialisation of the database will sanction all the schemas. Is there any
way to avoid this ?
2° as different tablespaces be brought to a consistency status different in time via
TSPITR even if the controlfile happens to be the same ?
3° if I opt for UNDO management AUTO, there can be only one UNDO TBS
active at a time. As this won't render me to trouble when i need to recover
only one application ? or on performance ?

Powershell script to help fix broken WMI on remote servers/computer.

I have a number of servers/computers that I am not able to update due to broken WMI. Does anyone out there have a Powershell script that will stop the WMI service, rename the repository and logs folders, then restart the WMI service again?
I created a script to stop the service, but it will not allow me to rename the folders (tells me access denied). If I dameware into the pc and log in with my admin credentials I have no issues manually doing the above steps, but there has to be an easier
way!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To remotely rename folders you must use an admin account on the remote system. The folder must not be protected the system and you cannot us WMI to rename the folder.
You may have to restart the system after setting WMI to manual start as it can have locks and it may not shutdown cleanly.
