Numbering pages, chapters, and sections

My suspicion is that there is insufficient width in your TOC to hold all of the text and it is being compressed onto itself, which is what happens to variables when there is not enough space. Variables are a single character for formatting, and they cannot break across lines.

  • HT5071 I almost finished my iBook and layed out almost 100 pages. Now I wanted to edit chapters and Sections by moving them into certain areas of the 100 pages. It will not work, adn I have no clue where to go from there. Any advise?

I almost finished 100 pages on the iBook Author. Unfortunately, I just created one page after the other (with lots of graphics and pictures). Having done that, I wanted to edit the iBook by placing Chapters and Sections between these pages.
I used iBook Author Help and Publishing with iBook Author for advise, but I am unable to move Chapters and Sections between the already finished pages. I get the strange feeling I did the whole thing wrong and wasted many hours for nothing. Anyone out there who struggled with the same problem? I self published a book already and wanted to use iBook Author to update and upgrade my existing book. Any advise is very much appreciated, thank you. Wolf

You may also try starting a "fresh" copy from scratch and copying and pasting into it with the order you want. I have succeeded in this a few times.
    Hope this helps...

  • I am still having issues with the TOC. I finally got several chapters and sections to show different pictures in the TOC, but have spent hours trying to figure out how to repeat it. This should be so simple. Is there an update? Please help us Apple.

I am still having issues with the TOC pictures. I got several chapter/section photos to show up, but can't seem to repeat this success. It is some mystery that happened during a time that I had practically given up. This should be such a simple thing. Drag and place a picture into the placeholder and it shows up in the TOC....right? Help, help help! want to get this thing done and it's taken two days of work just get some of the photos to show up. I am going to have to publish this ibook with no photos in several sections.....why can't this be simple? I have even had someone else spend hours trying to figure this out. This software is such a GREAT idea....come on...help with this little part of it.

I had the same problem myself. I got to the point where I couldn't replace the photo, of a new chapter, in the TOC. What I did was to duplicate an existing chapter that was working and was able to replace it's TOC's photo. I also found that if you try different areas of the photo you can sometimes get it to replace correctly. For example, instead of dragging the new photo to the middle of an existing photo, try dragging it to the right top corner.

  • Why does Itunes Windows download Numbers, Pages, iMovie and iPhotos in Library and I can't even open it. It is taking up space, safe to delete?

Thanks for helping me out in advance. I recently installed Itunes and figuring things out.
So I click the thing that said downloads available and the download screen started dowloading the apps below. It takes a huge amount of space in my tiny hard drive (256 GB), I clicked, double clicked, hyper-clicked and nothing really happened.
Is it safe to delete in iTunes, or windows explorer window? If I delete it would it delete it from my iPhone? Pardon for my newbness..

    Hello traderjohn,
You can absolutely delete those apps within iTunes. If you ever need to download them back in you can do that as well. It should not affect anything on your iPhone and when you sync your iPhone. Take a look at the articles below for more information.

  • Does iOS 8 support Numbers,Pages, Keynote for i OS 7 devices ?

    Hi,
I am using iPhone 4. I am using iOS 7.0.2. I was able to use Numbers, Pages, Keynotes since I bought my iPhone 4. I am using Windows OS 7. When I login into www.icloud.com , I enter my Apple ID and Password. From there I was able to use Numbers, Pages, Keynote and the data's get synchronized on my iPhone with iCloud.
But now I am unable to use it on my laptop. When I login it throws me a message stating that I need to upgrade my Numbers, Pages, Keynote to iCloud Drive to use it. However it also states that I will not be able to see the files on my iOS 7.0 devices after upgrading which means the synchronization of data's wont work. That pushes me to stop using the apps which I paid for. A screenshot of the error is attached for your reference.
Apple has all the rights to update their software. But as a customer I bought all the three apps and Apple should allow me to use the Apps without any hassle.
How this problem can be resolved ?
    Regards,
    Arun

The apps still function, you lose a feature of synchronization that those with newer devices can use. That is part of progress.

  • Using iWork 09 Pages I need the first six pages of a document to not be counted as page numbers. I need the seventh page to be numbered as page one. I already know to have a section break between pages 6 and 7 and to use inspector "start at." Not working

In the book I'm formatting, the first page is the title page, the second page is the copyright page, the third through fifth pages are the table of contents, the sixth page is blank, then the text (which I want to number as page one) is the introduction. I have section breaks between the title page, the copyright page, the table of contents, and the introduction. Using the Inspector, Layout, Section, and selecting "Start at" 7 doesn't do anything!

Is is a bit tricky, but it works. On your 6th page (the blank one) go to Insert > Section Break. This will give you a 7th page. Then go to Inspector (blue circle with a white letter i in it) and go to Layout Inspector (2nd tab). Once in thee, go to Section. Check "Start at" and enter the number 1. Then ensure all other toons I there are unchecked.
Then go to Insert, and select Auto Page Numbers. You will find that your 7th page is numbered 1 as you want, but the first six pages will be numbered 1 to 6, which you don't want. But you can then delete the page numbering in that 1st section, leaving your 2nd section, beginning at page 7, numbered as page 1. You'll need to play around a bit as I did, and I would suggest using a test document to play with so you can undo any unwanted actions etc, but with tweaking around, it's doable. This took me ages to sort, so if it works for you, please give me the points :-)

  • Table of Contents and Section Numbering ??s

Hi, we are using CS6 and have a couple questions about trying to use automated section numbering and table of contents in a single document. We don’t do this often (actually, never used auto-TOC before), so I just want to see if I’m missing something obvious.
SECTION NUMBERING WITH SECTION INTRO PAGES
Our document (a style guide) is divided into sections. Each section begins with a section intro title page, which is basically just a blank page with the new section’s title nicely styled. We are setting up our sections as 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. And we would REALLY prefer for the page numbering to be ’1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.’, where X.0 is the section intro page.
    1) I can add the sections OK with a prefix of 1., 2., etc. But InDesign does not allow me to start the section numbering at ’0′, it must be ’1′. So my intro pages HAVE to be 1.1, 2.1, 3.1, etc. instead of 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 etc. Any creative workaround to solve this??? We really don’t want the intro pages to be X.1, as they have no content and we want the X.1 page to be the first with content on it, NOT X.2. How do people generally handle a section intro page?
    AUTO PAGE NUMBERS AND TOC
We are trying to use the automated Table of Content feature and running into an odd issue. We have page titles on top of each page in a unique paragraph style (H1). We are adding the page number at the beginning of this paragraph using ‘Type > Marker > Current Page Number’ and a unique character style. It’s working fine on the pages, showing the appropriate section numbering we setup for the document (e.g., 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, etc.).
But when we make the table of contents, the ‘page numbers’ at the beginning of the titles are coming in as absolute numbers (e.g., 7, 8 , 9, 10, 11, etc.) instead of our section numbering. I checked the General Preferences, and it is set to ‘View: Section Numbering’. And when I exported an interactive PDF, the bookmarks also add the absolute page number at the beginning of the titles as in the TOC. But if I set the TOC to include page numbers automatically, those DO display correct section numbers (they just precede or follow our titles with the incorrect numbering).
    2) Any ideas why the TOC and PDF Bookmarks would be picking up absolute numbering while the actual titles on the pages show the proper section numbering?
    THANKS!

    Peter Spier wrote:
I've never tried adding a second marker to a paragraph like that. Why not use a numbered list instead?
Just checking in here. Not sure I understand what you mean about using a numbered list. Do you mean instead of the page numbers in the titles, or instead of the Table of Contents? Not sure how either could be automated to stay in sync with adding/removing pages and creating the TOC links and bookmarks in our PDFs.
    - Is there a bug when the TOC pulls the specified title paragraphs and they have page numbers in them?
Thanks. Still trying to see if we're doing something wrong as this is the first we've played with TOC.

  • When printing a PDF file I would like to ensure that all 'chapters' print on the odd numbered pages.

I need a way to set up a PDF file so that when I print it all new chapters (and single sided forms) print on the odd pages. These PDFs are available for viewing on the network but occasionally there is a demand to print one of them. Is there a 'chapter start' (or similar command) which will allow the PDF to  more properly format when printing.

There's no automated process because I don't think Acrobat could determine what was the beginning of a chapter. However, you can insert blank pages that start the first page of chapters to an odd-numbered page.
In Acrobat XI, that is Tools > Pages > More Insert Options > Insert Blank Page

  • My InDesign document has two page 1s and I can't get the page numbers to work.  Help!

My InDesign document has two page 1s and I can't get the page numbers to work.  Help!  How do I fix this?

Do you mean the first section is starting at page one?
And the second one now is starting at page two?
So I would ask why you would need sections at all?
Did you set the controls for Automatic Page Numbering?
If you select the particular page where section two is starting in the Pages Panel, you could untick the Start Section option in the numbering and section dialog. That would remove the section. You cannot do that with the very first section, but you should set the first section to Automatic Page Numbering if you ever want to use your document with an inDesign book file.

  • How do I put page number at the center of the bottom of page one and the rest of the page numbers at top right corner?

How do I put page number at the center of the bottom of page one and the rest of the page numbers at top right corner?

Put a section break at the bottom of page 1
Then insert your page number in the footer of page 1.
    Go to page 2 and click in the body of the text;
Inspector > Layout > Section > uncheck Use Previous Headers & Footers > click in Header on page > insert > Page Number

  • How do you force a section to begin on an odd-numbered page?

I would like to be able to format sections in my Pages document to automatically begin on odd-numbered pages.
In this manner, each chapter of my document will begin on a right-hand page regardless of where the previous chapter ended.
Yes, this has the possibility of having blank pages in the final document, but this is a common practice in many publications.
Yes, I can insert additional page breaks to get the sections to begin on odd-numbered pages, but this technique requires that the document be checked and double-checked to be certain that each section begins on an odd-numbered page. Further, each time any editing is done, the document must be rechecked to assure that the correct number of page breaks have been inserted between each section.
The goal is to have this done automatically so that each section begins on an odd-numbered page without any further intervention on my part.
I'm trying to make the shift from MicroSucks Word to Pages and am struggling with some of the finer details. I have used MicroSucks Office products since version 1 and know them inside and out. As a dedicated Mac user, I figured it was about time I made the switch.

From the Layout inspector, at the bottom of the Section tab choose
    Section starts on: Right Page

  • Book Chapter and Section Numbering

    Hi,
I've been through the tutorials and cannot seem to find a solution to my problem. Maybe I'm missing something simple here. Basically, I'm writing a book and want each chapter in a separate document with contiguous section numbering. e.g.
    Document 1.
    Chapter 1
       Section 1.1
           Section 1.1.1
           Section 1.1.2
                Section 1.1.2.1
       Section 1.2
           Section 1.2.1
           Section 1.2.2
    Document 2.
    Chapter 2
       Section 2.1
           Section 2.1.1
           Section 2.1.2
                Section 2.1.2.1
       Section 2.2
           Section 2.2.1
           Section 2.2.2
If I define the Chapter as a Section heading with a level 1 hierarchy and each sub-section with level 2, 3, 4, etc hierarchy, the above works fine within each document, but section numbering always stays at 1 in each document and doesn't increment when I make the book i.e all chapters remain at Chapter 1 within each document.
If I use the Chapter text variable, chapter numbering updates, but the section numbering isn't linked to the chapter number e.g. Section 2.1 in document 2 now becomes Section 0.1, since there is now no level 1 Section heading defined.
    Please help,
    Thanks.

    Hello Eugene,
Thank you for the response. I actually ended up defining the Chapter as a level 1 section in Bullets and Numbering, but made it a new list called Section which is continuous across documents in the book.
This works great. Everytime a new chapter is added, numbering needs to be updated in the book panel.

I just found the answer myself. I don't know how to delete my question, so I'll just write the reply to the answer - just in case somebody needs to know: Insert a section brake after the second page and then choose "Start on 3".
