Numbering & section weirdness

I've recently adjusted the numbering section of a (InDesign CS4) 44 page doc and after saving it to a pdf, I noticed that PDF pages jumped from page 44 to 178. It looks like there are 178 pages in the doc rather than 44 according to the thumbnails and the total page count in the top menu in Acrobat. My actual InDesign layout pages are correct and show up correctly. As are the actual layout pages within the PDF file. It's only the page numbering in the PDF thumbnail or total number of pages in the Acrobat top menu. When you go to print it says your printing 1-178 pp. Master pages are set up properly and work fine in the layout. Any ideas on why this is happening or any fixes. Thanks Scott

All the page numbers in the layout show up correctly. It's a 44 page doc with cover, inside front and back cover, and back cover, plus 40 text pages which is where I started the page sequence (actual page 3 in layout). The Acrobat file shows you have 142 pages in the document when there are only 44. They print out fine by the way (correct page numbering). By the way when I wanted to print the whole thing I had to print 1-142 not 1-44 (it wouldn't allow 1-44).

    1.  I have many documents to add into a book. After adding the documents, all file page numbers should be continued from the previous file. Now I am doing manually for all files at all time. Numbering & Section Options => Start Page Numbering at: to Automatic Page Numbering.
    2. And also I need to add the Chapter number with the page number (Ex: 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 … , 2/2, 2/3, 2/4 …., 3/2, 3/3, 3/4 ….). Here also I am doing manually like.  Numbering & Section Options => Page Numbering => Section Prefix: 1 and Include Prefix When Numbering Pages. (The page number should start from 2).
Note: In Every chapter opening there will be a file name called S… (Ex: Ch 1: S3391.indd, Ch 2: S3392.indd, Ch 3: S3393.indd). So after every S(S3391, S3392 …) file the next file page number should starts from 1/2, 1/3. 2/2, 2/2 ….
    Ex:
    Chapter 1          Pages
    S3391.indd
    32457.indd       1/2  … 1/5
    32617.indd       1/6 ….. 1/9

  • Numbering & Section issue

    Hey all,
I had two different spreads which had "start section" checked under numbering and section dalogue. Both of them had a page 4 and so when I went to print it was impossible to print as error would continuously display. So to solve problem, with the first section, I specified Start Page Numbering at with "1000" to ensure that it would not conflict wiht the numbering of the other section. Hence, now I have spreads in my pages panel with numbering like 1000,1001,1002,1003 - even though they are really the 1,2,3,4 page respecively in document. However, I cannot name them 1,2,3,4 because I later name spreads 1,2,3,4. Rather than using this high number to represent the spread numbering, is there  a better solution?
    Thanks for response.

When you attempt to print you can use "+" symbol this will use the actual page instead. So for example Print>Pages>+8 would print Page 8 of the document not folio 8.
    Example:
    Pages
    |1
    2|3
    4|1
    2|3
    |4
Using the "+8" would print page 8, i.e., the 8th page.
But I think you're misunderstanding the Section numbers.
Typically within a publication you would not Section parts of the publication with 1,2,3,4 for both sections. This would really trip up someone when looking at a table of contents, table of cases, an index or page references within the publication.
Sections are designated with Roman Numerals, i,ii,iii,iv,v etc. for pages preceding the main focus of the publications.
    For example I could have
    (these in roman numerals)
    Lead In Page (i)
    Imprint Page (ii)
    Foreword (iii)
    Contents (iv - xx)
    (these as 1,2,3,4)
    Chapter 1 (1)
    Chapter 2 (20)
    chapter 3 (46)
    etc.
Typically you would not Section a book with two Sections using "Numerals"
So the simple solution is to change the pages prior to the main Chapters to "Roman Numerals"
If you're using folios on these pages they will be represented in i,ii, iii, iv, v, vi etc.
    But that's normal practice.
If you really need to number the Sections 1 - 4, then 1 - 4 again
You can use the + symbol print the actual page in the document and not the folio.
But it's odd to numbers sections this way.

  • Page Numbering / Sections

Can someone please give me a step by step on how to correct things when I receive this message (see attached).
I have tried a few things but it's not fixed and therefore I must not be understanding.
    Thanks!

ID is telling you that you have pages with the same number assigned in more than one section, and that the numbering style is the same, so the program cannot distinguish which one you might mean when you tell it do do something that requires knowing a page location, such as moving pages or printig a page range.
You correct the problem by changing the numbering style for the section, by using small roman mumerals, for example, for front matter and arabic numerals for the body of a book.

  • Numbering sections in CS2

    Hi I'm an inexperienced user & I have documents of between 20 - 60 pages. I have a table of contents on the first page, and I have sections;
    Tendering Documents
    Examples of previous work
    Contract
    Payment Schedule
    Risk Assessment
    Method Statement
Then to the right I have the page numbers, I was hoping to have section markers or something like that to automatically number what page they are on as bigger jobs have say 15 tendering pages whereas smaller jobs have only 2 pages in this section.
    Is what I'm after possible?
    Thanks

Have you looked at using the Table of Contents feature in InDesign?  It sounds like that's what you are after?
Although this older blog-post isn't from CS2, it should help you understand how this works: http://carijansen.com/2009/03/22/tip-085/
Also have a look in the index of your CS2 Help and locate "Table of Contents" to read-up about it a bit more.

  • Lost use of extended keyboard numbers section?

Since upgrading to 10.4.8 I have lost the ability to key in numbers from the extended keyboard. Entering numbers from the upper region of the keyboard does work.
Is there a solution to this or is it just me and I need to strip something out?

    Hi, gchenault.
I presume you are referring to the numeric keypad on the right side of your keyboard.
If you press the keys in the numeric keypad, does the mouse pointer move? If so, you or someone else using your computer has accidentally enabled Mouse Keys in System Preferences > Universal Access > Mouse Tab.
Open the System Preferences > Universal Access > Mouse tab. If "on" is selected for "Mouse Keys," then select off.
Note: Even if you have Mouse Keys set Off in the Universal preference pane, you can enabling toggling of Mouse Keys On or Off at will by selecting Enable Universal Access Shortcuts at the bottom of any of the Universal Access preference panes. With shortcuts enabled, pressing the Option key five times will toggle Mouse Keys On or Off. Neat, eh? Handy to know should your mouse ever quit. However, if Enable... Shortcuts is not selected, then the toggle will not work.

  • Can you apply "Indent To Here" in a paragraph style (Bullets & Numbering Section)? ID-CS6/MAC

    Hi Adobe comunity,
As the title of this discussion states, can I apply "Indent to here" within paragraph styles. Please take a look at the attached image which will give you an idea of my dilema.
Any info on the matter would be greatly appreiated.
    PixelNovae
    MAC 10.6.8

    Peter,
Thanks. this is definitely a work around. The only problem with this solution is that if a document has a ton of bullet levels, the designer has to perform and keep up a ton of math in order to do proper levels. Which is cumbersome. At the same time time, the Indent To Here (ITH) command is so much more cleaner and efficient specially when it comes to visual alignment of the when "shape shifting bullets" are used.
    Example:
    i. bullet
    ii. bullet
    iii. bullet
In the above example, the ITH would create clean copy alignments thorought on all secondary line copy while the -/+ indents would not be able to remain consitent (unless the designer has to tweak every bullet with indent levels). That is, on the above example, the second lines on bullets ii and iii would be irregularly aligned.
So i take it one cannot input the ITH command onto the "Number Field". Hmmph. lol

My commands are kind of kludgy (they make the indenting a little weird), but I think they should work
First, we redefine the command used for numbering sections to "hspace*{-18pt} (ie: just display the title 18pts left of where it should  be). This may need to be adjusted depending on font size/ etc.
Next, we redefine the command used for numbering subsections to display the subsection number as an arabic numeral.
    \renewcommand{\thesection}{\hspace*{-18pt}}
    \renewcommand{thesubsection}{\indent\arabic{subsection}}
Just for reference, I believe the default behaviour is
    \renewcommand{\thesection}{\arabic{section}}
    \renewcommand{\thesubsection}{\arabic{section}.\arabic{subsection}
    EDIT:
These commands should be placed in the preamble, although I think they work in document.
    Also,
    \renewcommand{\thesection}{\hspace*{-1.0em}}
    \renewcommand{thesubsection}{\indent\arabic{subsection}}
may work better, depending on the font/ fontsize you use. (1.0em is roughly the width of an 'M' in the current font.)

  • Changing section numbers depending on order

I work on a lot of documents that have numbered sections. These sections are headed by "Section Title: Section Number" on the initial page and "Section Title: Section Description" on subsequent pages of that section. My problem is that frequently the names of the sections change as well as the order that they're in.
I set up custom text variables for the section titles. That seems to work well enough. I can go in and change the variable which changes all instances of it in that section. My bigger problem is that whenever a section get reordered I have to go in and manually update all the section numbers.
Is there a solution to this? Thanks in advance.

Does the section number appear on the document page somewhere, like in a heading? You'd normally pick up smething like that using a Running Head type variable, which can be set to pick up either a paragraph style (so it grabs an entire paragraph) or a character style (limited text). You can apply character style that is nothing but a name, with no acutal attributes, to selected text to make it work in the variable, if you need to.
You also have the choice of first on page or last on page. If there is no text on the page with the style, ID looks backwards through the document until it finds the first instance to use.

  • Section Numbering in Header

On a master page, I need the section number and section title to show in a header. I am setting up a template for a multi-section document and making the transition from Word to InDesign templates has been a bit of a leap.
I created a text variable for my Heading 1 style and used it in my header to show the title of the section. For the number, all I could think of was that I needed use a section marker character in the header and had to specify it manually in the Section Marker box in my Numbering & Sections options window.
    (1) Is this the only/best way of accomplishing this task?
and while we're talking about the window...
    (2) Is entering the Section Prefix manually the only/best way of getting the section number to show in my footer page numbers?

I’m interested in answers to this problem too, and pleased that two of the “top minds” of this forum are on the case...
I’ve had to deal with a similar problem while typesetting Shakespeare plays. Basically, I need a running header on every page that displays the act number and scene number. And it must all go into a single document (rather than an InDesign “book”).
My own “solution” to this problem seems so clunky I hesitate to mention it. I use GREP to add numbers (using invisible character styles) to almost every line. One invisible number is the act number, the other is the scene number. The running header grabs the first occurrences on each page of these two character styles, and displays them at the top of the page -- which is the only place where they are visible.
There simply has to be a better way. Alas, so far I’m unaware of it.
I’ll modestly admit, however, that this method isn’t as bad as it sounds. The invisible numbers add a negligible amount to the size of the document, and it only took about ten minutes to add them to Hamlet, a l-o-n-g play.
But tell me: what is the better way?

  • Chapter-section numbering

Hi - having strange issue with Chapter and section numbering (not page numbers). For example, Chapeter 1, then a 1 -1, 1 - 2,etc. Working in CS5 on Win7 platform.
In the Bullets and Numbering section of the style sheet for Chapter Head:
    List type: Numbers
    List: [Default] Level: 1
    Numbering style: Format - 1,2,3,4,
    Number: Chapter ^#:^t
    Character Style: None
Mode: Start At: Continue From Previous Numbers
    for the Section Sub-head:
    List type: Numbers
    List: [Default] Level: 2
    Numbering style: Format - 1,2,3,4,
    Number: Chapter ^H - ^#:^t
    Character Style: None
Mode: Start At: Continue From Previouse Numbers
Restart Numbers at This Level is checked.
For some reason, the Cpater numbering jumped over Chapt 5 to 6. I rechecked the doc several times, no chapter 5 being applied anywhere. Then my Sections got messed up....and now Chapter 1 shows Sections 6 -1, 6 -2, etc.
I know I could convert these to text, but what a pain.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

I may have answered this myself:
The subhead section should have used a number code thusly: ^1 - ^#.^t , where the ^1
indicates the sirst level (Chapter Head).
    Wow - a little confusing....

  • Page numbers in page panel don't match current page numbers

    Hi all,
I have been working with InDesign for a decade now and never had this problem.
I created a document in InDesign CS 5.5, very simple and with consecutive pages, no sections etc.
My page numbers show up correctly on my spreads. BUT, for some reason, the numbers that are shown in the page panel, underneath the page icons, are different. The first page is named "11", followed by 12-17, then the numbers jump to 111, 112 etc. I selected all pages and chose "Numbering and Section Options", setting them all to automatic page numbering, but to no avail.
As I said, the actual page number on the page is unaffected. But this bugs me since I am afraid that the document is somehow messed up.
I am using a simple InDesign document, no book file.
Any idea why this would happen?
    Thank you so much!

Thank you - I just found the solution to my problem (after playing around some more), and it turns out to be rather simple. In Numbering & Section Options, the Section Prefix was set to "1" - this field needs to be clear. That's why InDesign would add a 1 to every number.

  • Why can I not save a locked Numbers document?

My Numbers is weird, slow and almost impossible to get used to. That's why I now
I still use Appleworks Spreadsheets on my Powermac for doing daily accounting updates, and
only then import a copy to Numbers for keeping copies on my MacBookAir.
I created a template in Numbers, open it for every import, then copy the content of the import
to the template.  The template is named Copy 0.
To do that I will import say "12Dec01", then need to open "Copy 0" and duplicate it (so I will not lose this template) then rename the duplicate to "12Dec01".  I
then open the imported "12Dec01" and copy its content, then paste it into the renamed duplicate, then "lock" that document.
I now want to save it, but Numbers will not let me save an open document that has been locked.!!!
Why lock it if a locked document cannot be saved?  Besides this issue of locking, I now have 4 open documents on the desktop:  The import, Copy 0, the Duplicate of it, and the Renamed copy of it.
You know what? In Appleworks you would only have 1 document open which you "save as" with what ever name (in whatever condition of progress you want to save it), wherever to.
Accidentally, I found I can save a locked document but only after doing all these extra steps:  In order to lock the document it has to be closed and saved unlocked  to a folder first, then opened up again, and only then it can be locked!
This process reminds me of the old DOS systems, which questiioned everything you wanted to do with "do you really want to do that?"
I wonder whether my Numbers is damaged, or whether it has a good reason to be that way?
Or maybe I missed some instructions?

Thanks Jeff, I was not aware that a template could be multi-page.  (All the existing templates were 1 page)
But it worked, saving me some steps.  When I was finished I renamed the document, and locked it.
Then tried to save it but  could not because it was locked.  I closed it, went to my Spread Sheet Folder ,
to find it, it was not there.  The Finder could not find it either.
    So I start over again.
I opened up Numbers and it showed my personal Numbers template folder, it contained both my new
original 4 page template and the vanished saved document!
I tried to delete the template containing these document data and could not - I had to go to the Library/Application Support/Numbers to physically remove it from this folder. Then I started over again.  I Finally found out how to make it work: I can now "save as", and then lock, and it will go to place where I want it to be saved and locked.
The secret is: Click on the document title in the menu bar, and it opens up  "Save as...", which works the same as in OS 10.4.11, and you can pick the place you want for saving.  Once done that, you can then lock the document in the same pull down menu, and then close it.
I also found later that I can delete a template from its folder, by letting Numbers open the templates,
clicking on the one I want to remove, then go to the "Numbers Menu/File/Move to...", select "Desktop"
and from there the selected template can then be thrown into the Trash from there.
It appears now that the real fault of the Numbers software is that the "Save as" command is not available in the "Edit" or "File" pull-down menus, but hidden behind the title of the document.
