Numbering - stuck (ID CS3)

Hi!<br /><br />I'm stuck while trying to do a relatively simple thing with Paragraph styles. I've just imported a long text (book) into InDesign and now I'd like to set up the top level section headings to look like this:<br /><br />b Section <number><br />b Actual section title text<br /><br />Furthermore, I'd like section titles to have a gray background to make them stand out of the text better. I don't want to create separate text boxes for each section title, as this would a) require me to position them in the same place on all pages and b) cut out manually all section titles from the text I've imported from Word, adjust text boxes on first pages of each section etc. etc. - way too much repetitive work. Hard to do it consistently too. <br /><br />But, it turns out I can't do that. First, no way to insert a "new line" into "numbering" in a paragraph style. I tried to enter "^r" or "^n" but it doesn't work, the only thing that can  be inserted is apparently a tab or some funny characters. I watched all Adobe tutorials and searched the web - no way to do that, not possible. Failing here I was only able to get this:<br /><br />b Section <number> Actual section text but it is <br />b quite long.<br /><br />Now I wanted the second line of the section title ("quite long") to be start exactly where the first character of the "Actual section text..." starts. Again, no way apparently to do that. <br /><br />Finally, absolutely no way to apply a different background to a para. <br /><br />I need some help or I need to get sure that InDesign is not capable of doing this - which would mean I have to abandon it for some other tool that would be clever enough for structured text that I want to typeset.

>First, no way to insert a "new line" into "numbering" in a paragraph style.
You're right, there isn't.
>I wanted the second line of the section title ("quite long") to be start exactly where the first character of the "Actual section text..." starts. Again, no way apparently to do that.
Yes, there is. Use a tab after the number and a hanging indent. (Or maybe you can insert an "indent to here" code - I don't have ID in front of me, so I can't check.)
>Finally, absolutely no way to apply a different background to a para.
Have you tried a custom underline?

    Please Help

Thanks for the additional information, but unfortunately it still leaves me a bit confused.  We have only used InDesign CS3 and CS4 with the regular Adobe Paragraph Composer, and it works just fine except for the one font - Adobe Thai.  This font works well also except when a tone mark is needed above a punctuation mark - thats the only time we see a problem?
Can you read Thai? Your post confuses me, too. I see that no Thai fonts work correctly in CS4 without the World-Ready Composer turned on. I don't work in Thai very often - my SE Asian script expertise is concentrated in Lao, Cambodian, and Burmese - but I have some sample Thai randomly harvested from the Internet, and a collection of Thai fonts, and none of them work without the World-Ready Composer turned on. Follow the link I posted previously and read about it.
These are all generic MS fonts. I suppose that someone clever w/OpenType might be able to make a font that would render correctly in the normal Paragraph Composer, which is why I asked you to name any font that did work correctly in CS4 without the World-Ready Composer. I would like to know about it.
Even with the World-Ready Composer, I'm not willing to say that the Thai is being rendered well - I don't read Thai, so I am not suited to make judgments on good typography, but the Paragraph Composer examples above are obviously less correct than the World-Ready Composer examples.
I'm not even going to talk about CS3. Try this experiment yourself and post a screenshot.

  • How Do You Trace Numbers In Illustrator CS3

    Hey guys,
I am stuck! I am very much a newbie with Illustrator although from what I have used I love it.
I am currently in the process of designing a sticker which is to be cut from Vinyl and I am wanting to know what I must do to Numerical/ Alpha characters to register their outlines as cuts.
I figure I could go round and trace all my characters and create paths that way, although this seems very time consuming and a primitive method which I highly doubt is necessary in such a program as Illustrator to execute what should be a pretty straight forward job.
I though that turning off the fill on the characters and registering a stroke would register as a cut, although my plotter operator says not!
SO my question is how do you create paths (which will reguster as cuts) from numbers/ letters WITHOUT induvidually tracing each character?
    Thanks guys,
    Tobi

Type, Create Outlines. Now you have converted live type to vectors.
There's no need to change the fill of the characters. Turn off the preview (Cmd-Y) and you'll see what you've got.
If perchance some of the characters overlap it's not a bad idea to do a Pathfinder Unite on them. That way you get rid of unnecessary paths.

  • Numbers stuck in re-open loop

Nmbers got stuck when trying to close so I had to force quit during shutdown.  Now every time I try to open Numbers I get 'The last time you opened Numbers, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again? ' I click re-open and I get a message about reprting to Apple.  I click re-open on this message and it just loops back to the first message and nuymbers will not open.  Any suggestions please?  If I log into another account on my Mac Numbers opens OK.

    Dave,
Youi're the first to report that holding the Shift key down while launching an app does not inhibit the reopening of files that were open when the app was Quit. I suggest that you try a few more times and alter your timing a bit. There's no System Preference for not opening formerly open document on Launch, but in System Preferences, General, there's a preference for closing all document on Quitting, so obviously those won't be automatically opening.
Youi could try trashing the Numbers Preference file for your User Account:
    Macintosh HD > Users > YourUserName > Library > Preferences > com.apple.iWork.Numbers.plist
You access that particular library from the Finder Go menu. Hold down the Option key, click on Go and select Library (about halfway down the list). Then navigate on down to the plist file. If that doesn't do it, check out all the other Numbers plist files in that preferences folder and try deleting them too.

  • Question about section numbering in InDesign CS3

How do I use section numbering (1-1, 2-1, etc.) throughout a book document? I have a Current Page Number at bottom center of each Master page and want to include the Chapter Number and a hyphen before the Current Page Number. I want to start numbering over with each chapter. Also, I would like to find out how to use a running header of the Chapter name in the Master Pages. Thank you.

There is a distinction between chapter and section numbers. Also, Book can have a special meaning, so let's see if we can clear up some stuff here, first.
Is this a single document which you are dividing into logical chapters by uing sections in Pages panel Numbering and Section Options, or an InDesign Book, which is a collection of individual documents, each of which might be one of your chapters, and each of which might also contain multiple sections. An individual document can contain many sections, each of which may have a prefix and a section marker, both of which are accessible for use in numbering pages, but an individual document can have only one chapter number.

  • Art board changes from CS3 to CC?

We are updating our workflow, and with it, software.  Going from CS3 to the creative cloud. For years we have stuck to CS3 as our downstream customers were slow to update and it was beneficial to provide the product in an older format usable to the broadest user base. Now we are upgrading to CC and I'm experiencing difficulty translating older Illustrator documents to Creative Cloud.
My understanding of the Art board is that it defines the live matter area of the artwork. Along with the Zero Zero point, this would serve as the starting point for image setters. When I preview the translated documents, the art board and the coordinates change. when I distill an eps into a pdf, i get a totally different result than when I save as a PDF within the program. Ive also experinced the zero zero point changing simply by opening the document again. This is making production very difficult as it seems like its not stable.
Anyone experience this in CC and is there a fix for it? See screen grabs below:
This is the way the document appears in Illustrator, notice the zero zero point.
When the document is distilled, the art board shrinks:

    LTU,
how do I fix it so its consistent?
I believethe following ways still work:
    A) Install and run the script in the OP of this thread,http://forums.adobe.com/thread/890507?tstart=30
    or
    B) Manually change the relevant preference settings as follows:
    0) Close down Illy (you can only change the preference file with Illy closed);
    1) Find and open the AIPrefs (Win speak) or Adobe Illustrator Prefs (Mac speak) file withe a text editor like Notepad or TextEdit; the preference file is a (hidden) file in the (hidden) folder Adobe Illustrator CS5 Settings
2): Find and change the following two bits of code:
    /isRulerOriginTopLeft 1 >>> /isRulerOriginTopLeft 0 (change 1 to 0)
    /isRulerIn4thQuad 1 >>> /isRulerIn4thQuad 0 (change 1 to 0)
This is a global change so you only have to do it once (just as you can undo it once).
You may find the folder as described in <em><strong><a href="http://www.bugge.com/Family-and-friends/Illy/illy.html"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Move the folder</span></a></strong></em>.
Also, it doesn't explain the discrepancy between Distiller and saving as a PDF within CC.
I have no clue about that one, I am afraid. I hope someone else has.

  • Opening CS3 file in CS4 - fonts wrong!

I have an FLA created in CS3 (Mac). It includes a couple of
fonts that were made into symbols. I'm both using those symbols to
set the font for dynamic text boxes on stage in various symbols (by
selecting the font-name-with-asterisk from the font menu), and in
    Actionscript to create text.
When I open the file in CS4, wherever I have used the menu
option (selecting the font with asterisk in its name), when I
select the box the font menu is showing a DIFFERENT font. And when
I publish none of that text shows up!
The font names with asterisks are still in the font list, but
now they're in a separate section separated by a line from the
    regular font list.
I'm not sure what to do - am I stuck using CS3 for the life
of this file? I'm not even sure how many text fields are in this
document, scattered among a number of symbols. If it was just a few
I could probably just manually re-select the font for each. I mean,
I assume I could do that...?
Is there a global find/replace option to fix this? Is this a
    known bug?

I dont have the installation disc's, how can I get this software downloaded and on my new computer without having to buy the whole suite again!

  • Can't download CS3 Web Premium files

I recently moved and then bought a new iMac computer running Maverick OS. I did a data migration of my old hard drive and all the software came along, BUT Adobe won't let me access anything. I can't find my original CDs, but I do have the serial numbers for my CS3 Web Premium software. So I clicked over to Download CS3 products, clicked the file links and got the following message:
    HTTP ERROR: 404 /support/downloads/dlm/main.jsp
    RequestURI=/support/downloads/dlm/main.jsp
How can I download the apps to my new computer?

When I use the link you showed it brings me to the page I expect, full of various CS3 downloads.  I am using IE9.  Another option for b=downloading CS3 is to go thru the ProDesignTools web site.  Their downloads are still thru the Adobe servers, just without the download assistant coming into the picture.
You can download the trial version of the software thru the page linked below and then use your current serial number to activate it.
Be sure to follow the steps outlined in the Note: Very Important Instructions section on the download pages at this site and have cookies enabled in your browser or else the download will not work properly.

  • How do I rapidly try different fonts like I could in CS3?

When working with text in a design, a common activity is testing different fonts to see which looks best. This was a very simple in CS3 with its Text Editor dialog:
Right-click on text block, choose Editor...
Click on font drop-down and start hitting the down arrow
Every time you hit the down arrow, the text would update in-place, making it a cinch to find just the right font.
When CS4 was in beta, this functionality seemed to be lost. I brought it up in the beta forums but never received a reply. Now with CS5, I was hoping this rapid previewing would be possible, but I'm just not seeing it.
Can this rapid testing of fonts be done in CS5 or am I stuck with CS3 forever?

I feel the same way. There are so many things I like about how FW CS3 works that have been taken away or replaced with inferior alternatives in later versions that it makes me angry. I fully understand the developers want to standardize the product line and make them integrate better, but if usability suffers then it's counter-productive.
I skipped CS4 because it was too crashy. I tried CS5 and unintalled it after just a few days, finding it largely unusable. I don't think CS6 is any better on that front. I LOATHE this tabbed interface.
I continue to write bug reports on CS6 about lost functionality, even though I know I'm talking to a brick wall. :-(

  • Lightroom to Premiere Pro

In Bridge and Elements Organizer 4.0 I can simply select a photo and drag and drop the image into Premiere Pro 2.0. It is a very handy feature when having to work with a lot of photos in videos. In Lightroom this functionality seems to be lost. Is there possibly a setting that I am missing? I like many of the features of Lightroom and would like to use it, but it sure would be nice to fix a photo then just drag and drop it into Premiere rather than fix it in Lightroom then find it with Bridge and drag and drop.
    Thanks,
    Ryan

    Great, thanks for the notes.
I obviously have a lot to learn about how LR handles files.
John, your suggestion of using the Export Actions Folder worked pretty well. I can't put PP in their as it tries to open it as a project and not an import, but I stuck Bridge CS3 in there and it opens right up allowing me to drag to my hearts content.
    Thanks to you all!

  • How do I create an offset outside (outside only) an object?

    The problem is:
I often have complex vector objects which contain paths and I want to create a path around the object.
I have tried Offset Path, but this command also offset the interior of the object.
I have also tried Effect>Path>Offset Path, but the original path that I selected disappears and is replaced by the new offset path.
I want to keep the original path and have an offset around it.
I am a long time AI CS3 user and this question has always been lingering over my head.
My problem is that I create engravings of images and I want my machine to cut an outline around the engraving, the outline being X pts bigger than the engraving.
I have uploaded some images to help visualize the issue.
    Thanks for any help.
    P.S: I'm stuck with CS3 unfortunately.
    Original image: http://i46.tinypic.com/21edvs6.jpg
Image with path that I want to offset: http://i48.tinypic.com/15xmsso.jpg
    Image after offset: http://i47.tinypic.com/5nnind.jpg

Just to set up an example, draw these objects near each other:
A closed simple path (ex: Rectangle), solid fill, no stroke
A compound path (ex: two compounded circles, solid fill, no stroke
Duplicates of the above two objects, no fill, solid strokes of differing weights
An open path, no fill , solid stroke
Now carefully do the following to create an offset outline. Be aware, the resulting outline will take on the stroke/fill of the frontmost path.
For example, if the frontmost path has a black stroke, fill of none, so will the resulting offset contour.
    1. Select all the Paths.
    2. Object>Group.
    3. Edit>Copy.
    4. Edit>Paste In Front.
    5. Effect>Path>Outline Object.
    6. Effect>Path>Offset Path. Offset: as desired. Joins: Round.
    7. Effect>Pathfinder>Add.
Now store this as a Graphic Style:
    8. Black pointer: Drag the Group and drop it into the Graphic Styles palette.
    9. DoubleClick the Style’s icon. Set its name to “Offset Contour” (or whatever).
Now you can apply the same Graphic Style to a different Group with one click.
Graphic Styles are saved with the document. So if you want to use the same Style in other documents:
    10. Graphic Styles flyout menu: Save Graphic Style Library...
By default, the Graphic Style Library will be written into the Graphic Styles folder of your user account. Example:
    C:\Users\firstName.lastName\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS5.1 Settings\en_US\Graphic Styles
You can later load it into a new document by Graphic Style palette flyout menu>Open Graphic Style Library>User Defined,
or by simply copying a Group to which the Style has been applied and pasting it into the new document.
After storing the Style for future use, expand it into an ordinary path (or compound path, depending on the artwork):
    11. Object>Expand Appearance.
    12. Ungroup.
    13. Apply fill/stroke as desired.
Once you have created the Graphic Style, you can record an Action to automate the  whole thing, by recording these steps:
    1. Steps 2-4
    2. Application of the Offset Contour Style
    3. Steps 11-13
Now you can create such an outline for any set of paths with a single click by selecting all the associated paths and clicking the Action.

  • Photoshop CS4 & CS5: Fullscreen + Taskbar ?

    Hi all!
Does anyone find a solution for the bug (for me it is) in Photoshop CS4 & CS5 - in Fullscreen mode the taskbar is no visible (MS Windows)?
In case someone from Adobe read this - COM'ON PEOPLE!!! IS NOT SO HARD TO FIX THIS!!! ADD A SIMPLE CHECK BOX IN OPTIONS, FOR USERS THAT NEEEEEED THEIR TASKBAR IN FULLSCREEN! how many complains do you need to fix this!?? Think again... a lot of people are stuck to CS3 just for this problem!
    Best Regards,
    Angry CS3 user, dreaming for CS4 & CS5 Photoshop
PS: @ admins -> please, move this to Photoshop -> Windows! It'll be more correct!

Gee, thanks a pantload, Dr Misfit, assuming you're talking about my suggestion to use Photoshop in a Restored window (i.e., in a window not occupying the full screen).
Oh, and you're also welcome for the link I provided to a tool that forces the Windows 7 Taskbar to be on top.
The *only* downside to using Photoshop in Restored view that's been identified, and I agree that it's not pleasant, is that in Restored view and using Tabs you're prevented from panning an image around to where you want it if it fits entirely within the window.  So instead of working in the center of your screen you might have to work offset toward the corner.  Aw.  Now THAT's what I call a Big Deal compared to missing those all important Skype calls from your girlfriend.
I'm not against you working the way you want - it'd be just peachy if it worked just the way you like - but I'm here to tell you it's really, really not going to get changed in the current version just for you and the other three people on the planet who are for some reason jumping up and down about it.  Adobe ain't Burger King.  But someone who actually DID know something about Adobe and Photoshop would already know that.
You want to see the Taskbar now, work in Restored view.  Simple as that.  Get over it.
And have a little more respect for the people who try to help you for no reward other than the satisfaction of having helped someone.

  • Travails on CS4 Trials

Since I recently upgraded my HW , it seemed appropriate to try CS4 again. That turned out to be a real exercise!
First off, I get an 0x50 Stop message as I was beginning to configure Bridge, when I did a quick exit to see what I set up in PS. It never happened again so I went on. The Stop messages now changed to 0x08E. Careful inspection of the message ID'd NV4_disp.dll, the nVidia driver which I updated when I configured the new installation. CS3 Bridge has no problem with it, but CS4 does. Since it is a BSOD continually, I rolled back the driver. Now, Bridge runs ok, CS4 still runs OpenGL, but now CS$ appears not to really like that driver as I get erratic behavior like when moving the Window after engaging Float all Windows (I hate the default opening!) the image disappears unless I open something else or after moving it around for a while and clicking like mad, I get the image back and it is stable.
The second problem so far is the CS4 Bridge icon in the startup tray. If that is lit, I cannot open CS3 Bridge. Photoshop opens ok, but in order to open Bridge CS3, I have to exit CS4 Bridge first, which, incidentally is how I got the 0x08E stop! There is no way to permanently eliminate it from showing up because if you open CS4 Bridge at all, it sets the Startup icon no matter how Bridge  (and msconfig) is configured.
Since I also have BSOD when I installed CS3 (see http://forums.adobe.com/thread/540226?tstart=60), which also was traced to starup problems, I can only conclude that for my system outlined in the link, inadequacies have crept in for older programs running on newer platforms, and some older peripherals as well.
I have all the updates to CS4 and ACR.
On a positive note, CS4 Trial installed without a hitch and fast, around 5 minutes or so, which was nice to see. Also, my complaint with the brush disappearing in cerain color and values seems to have abated.
I guess I am stuck with CS3 for the forseeable future. That's not too bad, and hopefully, CS5 will cover all these bases nicely.

Been there Done that. Makes matters worse.
From what I can see, it seems to have to do with redraw, because as I decrease the acceleration, now it only redraws part of the image, tiling from top to bottom. Not all the tiles are present. If I drop to basic acceleration (one step above minimum) nothing redraws except box outlines.
On another front, I mentioned the Bridge Startup problems. I have been looking at that too, and neither will open if the other already is. So I went into the prefs on both, had only Bridge and Photoshop checked in CS3, and most checked in CS4. So I picked only Bridge and PS there also.
    Problem went away.
But hold on! There's more! Now if Bridge 4 is running and minimized, opening CS3 Bridge maximizes CS4 and doesn't open.If CS3 is open, nothing happens trying CS4. It doesn't maximize a minimized CS3 either.
There's still more! Now enabling everything or most everything in CS4 Bridge does not restore the problem. I may consider the update again.
This all can have roots in the video I suppose, but since I am going to wait for CS5 and Win7 and a real computer update, I'll have to wait for then. By that time, advances on all fronts are to be expected; a new video card is in the budget, but I haven't the foggiest which one!
On second thought, I don't want BSOD again so forget the update to the video.
