Numbers 08 slow!

Anyone have a solution for numbers 08 running slow?

  • Numbers '09 Slows down to a halt

Numbers '09 slows down to a halt when I add error bars to a graph. If the data series has ~60 points forget it - the thing halts.
I soo want to use Numbers '09, but for now I have to use either OpenOffice or Excel - both which handle this with ease.

There have been a number of posts related to slowness and charts but usually about 3D charts or huge data sets. And there are times that a document gets slow for no apparent reason. I haven't seen a large slowdown with a 60 datapoint chart with error bars. I just created a scatter plot from two 61 row columns of random numbers and it was slower for me on my Macbook Pro. Not a crawl but there were noticeable pauses.

  • Numbers incredibly slow at graphing

    Hi,
Does anyone find Numbers excruciatingly slow at graphing, even on a relatively small set of figures? It doesn't appear to be CPU related, just slow programming.

Certainly but not if the program behaves as an XML interpreter.
Yet this is exactly how browsers behave with HTML or GUI's behave with graphic interface elements. Inescapably, the machine must incur enormous overhead to interpret data as information, but that is what makes it a modern information appliance rather than a mere number cruncher not much different from a programmable calculator.
Historically, as such innovations have been rolled out, there have always been (not entirely unjustified) complaints that the overhead is too great & make the computer too slow to use for serious work. But as time goes on & computers become more powerful & programmers become more skilled, people realize that they actually can get a lot more serious work done because of shorter learning curves, less distraction from real work while they figure out how to get information into & out of the machine, greater portability of & accessibility to the information they need, & so on. And of course, these innovations enable other innovations that would not be possible without them.
In fact, the evolution of computers from number crunchers to information appliances has so profoundly changed the way we live that we call this period of history the Information Age.
To be sure, there is some pain involved in keeping up with the pace of progress in this age. What once was a fast computer with copious storage space rapidly becomes marginally able to handle the new applications & their ever larger metadata laden files. And sometimes developers seem to push the demands past what almost any available computer can handle, especially for new applications that haven't been fully optimized yet or include support for features envisioned but not available in the first version out the door.
When this happens, there isn't much users can do besides avoid the app or its too-slow features, or be patient when they must use them. It has always been so & probably will never change.

  • Why is Numbers SO SLOW?!?

Wow, I'm really thinking about switching back to Excel, which is like blasphemy for me. I only use Numbers for one spreadsheet. It's my personal budget. I have a tab for each account, and one tab where I enter reoccurring payments/credits. There is a debit column and a credit column in each where I enter transaction amounts, then a current balance (for all checked transactions), and a running balance. This is repeated for each account. Most of the tabs only have about 50 rows by 9 columns and one tab has about 350 rows by 9 columns. It only keeps one calendar year's worth of transactions as I create a new file for each year. The calculations are mostly addition, subtraction, sums and a lot of IF statements and a few ROUND functions.
There is a fair bit of cell linking going on between accounts and also with the one tab where the reoccurring transactions are entered, but nothing that it shouldn't be able to handle with ease. Been using this identical spreadsheet on Excel for many years and on much slower hardware. The problem is that it is dog slow to do almost anything that requires it to recalculate the spreadsheet. Dragging a row to change it's position takes 20-30 seconds and brings up the beach-ball. Checking off a transaction (which updates the current balance) takes 2-3 seconds. Entering, changing or deleting a transaction amount takes 12-13 seconds and usually brings up the beach-ball.
Is there some way to speed this thing up like forcing it to calculate to a lower number of decimal precision or something? It's mind-numbingly painful to use. Sure, I could start simplifying my spreadsheet by removing all the links, but that defeats the purpose of using a spreadsheet. My budget is a very dynamic tool, and I want the ability to change one thing and see how it's going to affect my finances 8 months from now. Again, this is something Excel handled with ease. No matter what I changed in Excel, it would recalculate and refresh almost instantly. I could handle a bit of a delay (say 2-3 seconds), but having the app become unresponsive every time I make a simple change is not acceptable.
I had the same problems in Tiger, and hoped that a clean install of Leopard would improve things, but unfortunately not. I'm up to date on all iWork and OS updates. My wife uses the same budget on her MacBook and she complains about the same issues. I've even recreated the file from scratch to make sure it wasn't some kind of corruption. Numbers just appears to be really inefficient with recalculating lots of cells.
I'd be happy to send Apple a copy of my spreadsheet so they could do performance testing/tuning for the next Numbers update. The way it is, I can't see anyone using Numbers for anything even remotely complex.

This is just a stab in the dark, but as it is iWork, it is possible that one of the fixes for slow Pages may work. Here is the list I usually give for Pages users:
    1. Do you have any PostScript Fonts installed? Some people have reported problems with some PostScript Fonts.
    2. Do you have any missing fonts? When you open the document, does Pages complain that it cannot find one or several fonts?
    3. Do you have corrupt fonts? Open FontBook, select all fonts and then File > Validate Fonts.
    4. Corrupt pictures, songs and movies in your home folder's Movies, Music and Pictures folders can slow down the product through the Media Browser. AVI films in the Movie folder can slow things down, as QT usually cannot play them.
    5. Go to View > Hide > Layout. For some reason the layout slows things down.
    6. Don't view Thumbnails.
    7. Use the Text Fit option "follow contour" instead of "follow a square" in the bottom section of the wrap inspector.
    8. If an object is set to wrap, and a wrapped side squeezes out any possibility of text wrapping along that side - such as extending a text box to the margin, the extreme slowdown will occur. So don't.
    9. Use as few objects as possible Fixed on Page. Instead use Moves with Text.
    10. Reduce the resolution of your screen.
    11. Reduce the number of colours of your screen.
    12. Change your video card. (Yes, even the screen hardware may be the source of the problem.)
Just ignore any point that does not make any sense at all for you in Numbers.

  • Numbers are slow with icloud

    Hello,
since big apple update (Maverick + new Numbers) it is unable to work with icloud documents. It takes incredible long time to open, save and sync (which is about every 30s).
Whats wrong with speed of icloud docs? Is the reason that I am from Europe (all Apple online services are here very slow (iTunes, Appstore...) )

It is not question of browser or web icloud.com. I turn on my MacMini mid 2011 with Maverick, start app Numbers and open document. When I click Open, it takes about 30s until dark window with icloud documents will show up. Numbers are freezed with beachball. Than I open the document, start to work and because Numbers is syncing very often, its freezing again and again...
It doesnt happend with local documents. It is the same with all apps using icloud (Preview etc)...
    Thanks...

  • Numbers VERY slow updating to idrive

I Changed the names for 10 spreadsheets and sfter
    3,5 hours Numbers still says:
    "Updating 10 sheets"
I have 100MBS FIBER (25 on iPad wifi)

    Thanks Wayne,
I did many times shut down & restart, but openning numbers still very slow.
Is it maybe due to some large files inside my numbers ? (My spreadsheet = BF column & 315 row).
Or is it Numbers are made for very light use only ?
    Pls reply if possible. Tks.

  • Numbers operating slow especially when opening

It seems that since the last update my Numbers software is operating very slowly.
Is anyone else experiencing this problem ?

    No problems here.
Does it run slowly when opening legacy (Numbers 2) documents?  Or when you create new documents too?
It's possibly a bad installation.  You could try going to LaunchPad and deleting Numbers 3 (the icon with four columns), then redownloading it from the Mac App Store.

  • Numbers very slow to launch after 10.5.2

I posted this first on the Numbers forum but got little response.
Since updating to 10.5.2 Numbers takes 5 or more minutes to launch on my iMac 2Ghz Core Duo while it works perfectly on my MacBook Pro (17" Core 2 Duo). The update was carried out the same way and the change to operation was immediate. It makes no difference whether I open an existing file or try to create a new one and the delay is the same regardless of which template is chosen. I have repaired permissions, restarted, even reloaded Numbers all with no effect. This is making Numbers unusable on the iMac and any help getting this solved would be much appreciated.

Ashka, Thanks for the suggestions but I'm afraid I've tried restarting, repairing permissions, ditching the preference file even reinstalling all to no avail. On my wife's MacBook Pro which is a 17" Core 2 Duo we have found no problems at all.

  • Is there any way to turn off recalculation in Numbers? (The program is far too slow!)

    Hi there,
I'm finding that Numbers is really (really!) bogging down because I have a large number of smaller tables (approx. 20) that I'm trying to link to a main spreadsheet. I've read online that Numbers will slow down because it recalculates all of the data every time you change a cell value. I really need to be able to use the system I've spent tons of time setting up, and the last step is to extract info from the individual data tables and have it display in the main spreadsheet. Can anybody help me figure out how to make this work?! Right now, there's no way I can complete the linking, as there's at least a 3-5 second lag/pause every time I try to enter a new cell value (and often, it's much longer!).
    Thanks so much!

Given my experience, the most efficient brakes are column headers, the infamous columns A, B, C, D and E when they are defined as headers.
An efficient way to fasten a document is to move tables doing only calculations in a sheet different than the one in which we insert datas.
Using this tip with scripts, when it may apply, often divide the task duration by ten (yes, by ten).

  • Numbers plots reallllllly slow...

I've finally gotten around to making a spreadsheet for budgeting purposes, and although I'm enjoying a lot of what Numbers has to offer, there is one thing that is rather annoying: I'm making a simple chart of my checking account balance versus time, and when I make this chart, every move I make to edit it or select it or deselect it takes a LONG time. It's extremely slow when I'm doing anything with this chart.
If I want to edit the chart title, for instance, I'll click on the chart, wait for 5 seconds, THEN it highlights it, then I click in the title section, and it takes another 5 seconds, and THEN I can edit the title. It's like it's trying to render everything every time I touch it.
Once the chart is deselected, the spreadsheet acts as normal. I went to my iStatPro widget while I was waiting for the chart to be selected, and my processors were going nuts (<5% left at idle); the Activity Monitor gave similar results. Once deselected, the processors acted normally.
So obviously, it's something with said chart that's being funky. What gives?
(This is a family pack version of iWork, if that matters.)

    Hello
Looking in the existing threads you would have see that it's well known that Numbers is slow.
We may hope that it would be faster in the next major version (iWork '09 ?)
but at this time, we have to live with it … or leave it

  • Slow responses in Numbers?

Using Numbers '09 with a new Macbook (2.0 ghz, 4 gb memory) seems to be kinda slow to me. At least compared to when I was using Excel on a PC (2.4 plain old pentium, 512 kb memory).
Sometimes the delay is minor, though annoying and other times it is a bit longer. For example, if I enter something in a cell and then, without pressing Enter or an arrow or tab key, I hit Escape, it should cancel whatever I was typing. One one sheet, there seems to be a very slight hesitation. There are almost no formulas on that sheet though the document contains other sheets with more formulas. The area where I typed the info is accessed by just one formula. When I tested on an area with no formula referring to it, things seemed fine.
On another sheet with lots of formulas (used for my mortgage calculations), the same process in a cell which will be referred to by various formulas, hitting escape takes about 2.5 seconds to revert! If I use a cell which no formula will refer to, then it was fine.
And if I make a series of changes in a cell (often when doing "what if" scenarios"), doing command-z to back out of them is slow for each step.
Since I used the same version of Excel (2000) on an old 133 mhz laptop years ago and never notice any such delay, I just don't see why this should be happening with Numbers, written years later and on a much faster laptop.
Is this just the way things are or is there something that I can do to solve it?

    Numbers IS slow responding.
We have to live with that or leave it.
_Go to "Provide Numbers Feedback" in the "Numbers" menu_, describe what you wish.
Then, cross your fingers, and wait _at least_ for iWork'10
From my point of view, it's a design flaw but I am not the product author so I can't change its behavior.

  • Very slow performance. Numbers is pokey, that's for sure.

I'm mainly interested in using this thread to see how many others feel the same way; that Numbers is slow in general. At least on my machine it is. I get much better performance from the ancient MS Excel 2000 running in Windows XP via Parallels on the same machine. And XP is running in less than 400 megs of RAM!
I know it's a 1.0 release, but scrolling, opening .csv files, formatting multiple columns, all are slower than my old MS Excel. Given that Parallels is not multi-core aware, is virtualized, is running an 8 year old version of Excel, and is running in less than half the available RAM, I really expected Numbers running natively to make a better showing for itself.

Forget the unfair comparisons to excel, numbers can't even keep up with AppleWorks!
I have a spreadsheet in Apple Works that I use to track revenue and profit for my business. I enter two numbers per day: Total Sales and Total Profit. There are 6 calculation columns that display 7 and 28 day running averages for sales, profit and margin each day. The spread sheet is about 1400 rows (one row per day). No special formatting, no formulas more complicated than if(), sum() and average().
    In Appleworks:
Data entry: instant - as fast as I can type.
Create a line chart on 6 columns and 1400 rows: 5 seconds
    Memory usage: 11 MB
    In Numbers:
Data entry time: Spinning beachball for ~10 minutes after each keypress (yes, REALLY)
Create chart: Unknown, maybe not possible. (Still waiting after 1 hour of spinning beach ball and 100% processor usage)
Memory usage: 1009MB (yes, ONE GIG), plus 2GB VM file (!!!).
I mean, how sad - ONE HUNDRED times more memory usage and over ONE HUNDRED tomes SLOWER. Absolutely terrible. If I were the engineer on this project I would be absolutely ashamed of the performance.

A chart in Numbers is causing Numbers to slow down & stutter when it is seleced or edited.  The memory is eventually depleted and Numbers crashes.  I'm using Numbers 2008 1.0.3.  This chart is pulling info from formulas in a large table.  That table is pulling infor from several smaller charts.  This is odd to me and it is the first time I have had this problem.  I have restart Numbers & the MBP.  In both cases, the memnory is returned the same & I restart.  The file is fine for a good while unless I start messing with that chart.  Then, the free memory excellerates it's disappearing act & Numbers crashes.  I will pay closer attention to the wired, active, & inactive.  I use iStat to follow this stuff.  What could be causing the memory disappearing act & the crashing?  It's just a chart.  I did see other posting about memory loss for Numbers 2009, but nothing within a year or that really addressed my issue.

There are only 4 lines with 50 points or less in each line.  Maybe my definition of large isn't so large.
I didn't upgrade to Numbers 2009, because it came out so quick that I thought it wouldn't have many changes & I thought another update would come out.  I have been waiting for the next update ... and waiting.  I'm surprised it has taken this long & am guessing that another should be out any time, now.  It has been 5 years and Numbers is missing some seemingly simple features like scatter plots & linear equations.
What would b the advantage of upgrading to Numbers 2009 that would be worth it & how would it eliminate this glitching and crashing?

  • A limitation to columns in Numbers

I have a simple 2 column table with dates in one, and dollar values in another.  I made a simple bar graph of this as well.  X axis is time (dates) y axis is value ($ amounts)  When I try to see the graph, no matter how I size it, I am only able to grab about 325 rows from the table to show. In other words I can see only the last 325 values of the data entered, so i am not seeing my full graph.  I cannot highlight the now 347 rows.  Is there such a fundamental limitiation in numbers?

    HI dude,
Not that I can see. Numbers was slow, but successful in producing a scatter chart, then a bar graph with 1500 rows of selected data on the machine I'm using—a mid 2005 iBook G4 running OS X v10.4.11 (Tiger).
