Numbers and Open Office

I downloaded Open Office onto my Mac. I had spreadsheets named Timesheets already in Numbers for prior years and I started a spreadsheet in Open Office for 2010 named Timesheets. It appears that my previous timesheets in Numbers (going back a few years) have now been overwritten. It doesn't matter whether I open Open Office or Numbers, the same 2010 spreadsheet is there and all the prior ones have gone. Is there a way I can retrieve my prior spreadsheets from Numbers?

mary,
In Finder > Preferences > Advanced, make sure "Show all file extensions" is checked. Then in the finder look for files with the extension ".numbers".
This is where TimeMachine comes in handy. If you aren't using TimeMachine, you should consider it.

These are the "out of the box" file formats that you can view on the iPad as mail attachments. If the file is not listed here, you cannot view it without a compatible third party app. What is the file extension?

  • Problems yoga 3 with microsoft office and open office

Have a problem with running microsoft office and open office on the yoga 3. Both programms are unstable and some calculation sheets in Excel don't even open, while they run perfect on my old HP notebook and the Asus Zenbook of my friend. Does anyone has an idea what could be wrong here?

Latest Yoga 3 ships with Win 8.1
Exactly, what error are you getting. Could you get a screenshot?
Are other/normal excel files working fine?
Does your file have macros or just complex formulas?
Could you create a new excel, copy your data into it and try to work with that?

  • I have an Earlly 2008 Mac Pro running Mavericks. I recently upgraded to Mavericks; downloaded software for a new Brother Printer; CleanMyMac 2., and Open Office.

This is my first post. Hope I am entering it correctly.
Open Office requires Java which exposes Macs to Hackers. A recent MacWorld magazine recommends removing Java which is not loaded with Mavericks. Could my Mac Pro been comprised with Java being present?
    Other Problems:
When Time Machine is backing up the Icon in the Menu Bar no longer turns to indicate it is backing up.
In System Preferences > Security and Privacy > General, Option and Advance selections are dimmed. Unable to make selections.
    Opening Apps very slow.
If I make a search and then select one of the items from the search, when I close the item it goes to the top of the search items and not back from where it was selected to open. So it is no longer in alphabetical order from the search items. I cannot drag it to its original position in the list.
The App CleanMYMac 2 keeps opening a window asking me if I want to open the App.

Could my Mac Pro been comprised with Java being present?
Java running inside your Browser, accessible from unknown Web sites is the threat.
Having Java Present is not a significant threat. If you run only trusted Applications, the threat is very small.
When Time Machine is backing up the Icon in the Menu Bar no longer turns to indicate it is backing up.
Apple realized that spinning Icon punished screen refresh, and changed the design. Now a subtle triangle appears and stays still while the backup is in progress.
In System Preferences > Security and Privacy > General, Option and Advance selections are dimmed. Unable to make selections.
Did you click the big Lock to authenticate as Admin?
The App CleanMYMac 2 keeps opening a window asking me if I want to open the App.
Many Users consider Apps like clean my mac to be dangerous. These Apps have a habit of throwing away parts of Mac OS X that are needed for proper operation. No one needs to run such stuff -- Mac OS X takes care of cleaning itself.  The space freed does not generally improve performance, and throwing away caches usually slows down your Mac (until the caches are re-created and then the so-called problem has not been solved).

  • Creating a letterhead that works with Pages, MS OFFICE and Open Office

I have to create a letter head template that can be used by people on PC who have either MS Office (word doc) or OPEN OFFICE (odt) as well as people using Mac iWork PAGES. In my old PC days I could easily make a template with the letter head (some graphics and text boxes) and anyone in the office could use it. Now I am perplexed in how I can get a document with graphics (the logos and some background boxes) so that it appears as a letter head when it is opened in other computers. If I save it to a MS word document, all my graphic boxes (backgrounds) pop up to the top, the text of the company name is moved to the back (behind the graphics) and the logo is resized which means for anyone to use it on a PC they have to readjust all the stuff. Some of these people are not the brightest monitors in the unit so I can't expect them to have to redo all the graphics. And the same problem for the people who have the freebie Open Office, even a worse box of scrambled eggs with our letterhead and logo then.
Any suggestions on what I can do? We have too many people in too many locations to simply print up a box of letterheads for everyone for as few letters they do write, but we need to make sure all our letters are, shall I say, on the same page. Anyway I can create that letterhead on a blank template that won't change no matter who opens it up in what ever?

    Hi There
A possible workaround is that you could use one of the applications to create the letterhead, save that document somewhere. You can then take a screenshot of that letterhead by pressing the command + Shift + 4 keys at the same time and dragging the crosshair around the letterhead. This will save a graphic of the selection on the desktop. You can then just drag this graphic into each application as needed. If you ever need to change the details of the letterhead you will have to take the screenshot again with the edited details and drag the new graphic into your documents.
Not the most elegant solution but a workable one atleast
    Hope this helps

  • Every time the laptop boots, Finder and Open Office opens. How do I stop this?

I downloaded Open Office on my Macbook Pro. Every time the laptop boots up, Open Office and Finder both load and I have to close them. D disk drive icon for Open Office remains on the deshtop. I have an icon for Open Office in Launchpad and I had one on the dock as well, bit I removed it. Is there a boot folder somewhere? If so.. Where do I find it? I am running Mountain Lion.

The Finder will always open when you boot... it's what supplies the basic Desktop, folders, etc. The 'face' of OS X. As to why OpenOffice is launching on startup, check System Preferences>Users & Groups and check you Log-in items under your user name. If you don't see OpenOffice there, make sure that you do not have "Reopen windows when logging back in" selected when you shutdown or restart.
    Good luck,

  • Hi. I need a apple program that can work and open Office 7 Publisher

Hi. I am new to apple computing and I find that my work in office publisher is not able to open on this Mac I have Pages but that is the only program I have on here.
Can any help me with a suggestion whit what program Apple has that is comparable with this window format?

I have a copy of Libre Office here, and I have a sample .pub file downloaded from MS. I can not open it using Libre Office, please point me to the method you used.
    But ....
I just found (in the impress module) a listing for Publisher, unfortunately it fails when opening the sample file (looks like a text only import), I will look for another file to test with.
    Thanks for the lead.
    Update:
    It does work:
Downloaded Publisher Template, opened and re-saved in Libre Office Draw.
To the OP, download Libre Office, Viking should get the solved award.

  • X11 and Open Office

I purchased my MacBook Pro about two months ago. I downloaded the Intel Mac OpenOffice file and I have an Intel MacBook Pro. I tried installing OpenOffice, but when I run the installation file, I get this message: "OpenOffice.org cannot be started, because X11 is not installed. Please install Aplle X11 first."
I went to the Apple website and downloaded the file "X11User.dmg" However, when I run this file and have to chose a destination volume to install the X11 software, there is a ! over my hard drive coupled with this message: "You cannot install X11 on this volume. Newer Software already exists on your computer."
When looking at Macintosh HD>Applications>Utilities, there is no sign of X11. A spotlight search gives me nothing of relevance either.
So what do I do?! Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

You did not install the correct X11 software. The X11 subsystem is on your MBP OS X Installer Disc. Insert the disc and locate the Optional Installs package and double-click on it to run the installer. Select the X11 option (deselect others you don't want) and click on Install.
There is an alternative that doesn't require X11. Neo Office Aqua is now available as a universal binary and does not require the X11 application. It runs natively. You can find it at www.versiontracker.com or www.macupdate.com, but be sure you get the Intel version (it's a beta 3 version.)

  • X11 and open office on 10.2.8

    Hello,
I am using a borrowed iBook G3 (running OS X 10.2.8) for taking notes in the classroom. I would like to use something like OpenOffice for notetaking.
I have been looking, and it seems that I must have x11 installed to use this, but that is only available from 10.3 on.
I just want to make sure my findings are correct. Are they?
(This will all be a moot point when I get a MBP next year...)

I have an old G3 ibook. I would suggest you not run openoffice on it unless you have the patience of a monk. I think openoffice is great, but it's also big.
Try Abiword instead. It will load in 1/3 the time and is more than sufficient for taking notes:

    Also, X11 isn't required.

  • Making a Bell Curve in Numbers or MS Office for MAC: I already have mean and standard deviation

I hope my question is a simple one with a simple answer: I have the results of a mid-term and the professor gave us the mean and standard deviation of the results of the exam from which he based our grades. I am a visual person and (to be honest) without having to put forth a lot of effort, I would like to see visually where I fall on this, admittedly, artificial curve. I have both Numbers and MS Office on my MacBook Pro. Is there an easy way to create a bell curve using these numbers? It seems like there should be since those are usually the only numbers needed. I just, honestly, don't want to do the tedious work myself.

Statistical functions including several which deal with normal distribution, are discussed in Chapter 10, Statistical Functions, of the iWork Formulas and Functions User Guide. This useful guide may be downloaded via the Help menu in Numbers '09. Go to chapter 10, or for a direct route, search 'normal distribution'
For what it's worth, you can find the formula  for calculating the coordinates for the bell curve here: The-Normal-Distribution-Or-Bell-Curve

  • Open Office Startup Question

    Hi All -
I recently bought a new MacBook. My first Mac, so I am on these forums a lot asking questions that to long-time users likely seem silly. Thanks in advance for your assistance and patience.
When I start Open Office I see in my Doc an application called X11 start. I understand this is some sort of Windows Translator (?) or something. It opens up a small text window with "bash-3.2$" in it.
That box will 'hang' for a while. Then I get a small box saying "Command Timed Out."
I click OK, then I can see the Java start (again in the dock) and Open Office will start.
What is happening here? Can I get around this, or is this the (small) price I will have to pay to use Open Office on the Mac?
    Insight / Suggestions appreciated.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
Open Office for Mac uses X11.
X11 is a framework for building Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) and has its origin in the Unix world.
Right now it is indeed the price to paid when using Open Office.
As an alternative you can use NeoOffice http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php which is based on the Open Office sources, but doesn't need X11.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • How to install Open Office 3 on Leopard 10.5.5

    Hello everyone,
I just bought a new MacBook (the 13" version) and I'm new to all this Mac stuff, you know the Mac OS and everything. I'm trying to add some of the programs I usually use in my other two systems (Windows Server 2008 and Linux) and one of them is Open Office. I downloaded the version 3 from the apple's site but I don't know/understand how to install it. After I downloaded I execute the icon in the mounted image and open office starts right away. Is that the way it is supposed to be? I mean, no installation? Somehow it doesn't seem right that everytime I want to execute one of its apps I need to mount the img file and then run it form the pop up window. Any clues?
btw, I have also rad some posts in many forums reporting some problems with Open Office and Leopard and the X11 server. In most the cases it is solved by installing a new version of the X11 server. That sounds very weird! (you see, that is exactly why I love Win...these things never happen and I never had to ask in any forum how to do things in Win :-p )
Anyway, I'd appreciate any help on the issue. Btw, the new MacBook rocks well done Mr. Jobs and Co.

you need to drag the application icon from the mounted image to the Applications folder. the app will be copied there. after that you can eject the dmg. you won't need it any more. to use the app double-click on it in /Applications. that's how most OS X apps are installed.
