Numbers files marked as not having a valid format.

Hello Forum.
I had a power failure on my laptop. I removed my thumb drive by just pulling it out of the machine. When the computer powered back up it said the drive (which had my numbers document on it) had an improper device removal message. Now I am getting the following message on all the numbers documents that were on the thumb drive. "The document does not have a valid format".
Is there any way to read these files?
Thanks.
Sharon

  • File does not have a valid format

    Hi. I just typed a document for around a half an hour and saved. I closed an reopened the document and it now says that the document does not have a valid format. I also saved it as a .doc and I got the same thing in pages and mac word. Is there any way I can recover the document?

    Michael
    I have tackled this with all the applications at my disposal.
    NeoOffice, OpenOffice and BBEdit will open the .doc file but the text is rubbish.
    I think this file has been terminally corrupted. Can you remember if you did anything special when you saved it or if there was any glitch on your computer at the time?
    All you can do is prepare for such eventualities in the future.
    In preferences you can set that Pages saves a previous version when you save, at least that gives you something to go back to.
    Sorry I couldn't give you any better news.

  • Pages document "could not be read" bc. it "does not have a valid format"

    The document in question was properly saved and Pages was not open when my computer hung as it was shutting down. MS Word would not quit or force-quit and I had to hard restart the computer. When I later tried to open this Pages document, which I had been working on before Word froze, Page would not open it and responded with the error message: "This document "document_name.pages" could not be read. This document does not have a valid format." When I looked at the document in question I noticed that its file size was 0KB. I have no idea why this happened, but I suppose it has to do with my computer not shutting down properly and perhaps with Word freezing. If I repair my drive permission, re-index it, anything, will it help? Just a note on the status of this machine: spotlight stopped working earlier this morning and I was waiting to finish this document before repairing disk permissions and trying to fix that issue with Spotlight.
    In the meantime I have tried various fixes. First I tried to change the file ending to .zip, unpack it and open it. Then the same, but this time I tried to view package contents. It doesn't show up in the contextual menu as even having a package to show the contents of. The file is effectively empty, but I don't know where the contents went! The funny thing is that the MS Word doc was recovered automatically. Is it possible that Pages doesn't have an auto-recovery mechanism?
    I need this file urgently, or at least the text in it. It is the bibliography of an important paper due tomorrow at 5 pm.Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    BTW, I have used a file-recovery program in the past. It is called "Stellar Phoenix" and it worked wonderfully to find a Word doc that I accidentally deleted. It can't find .pages document though. In order to do so, I would need to tell the program what the average file size is, as well as the header information as follows. "Header (in hexadecimal)" "At Offset (in decimal)". I have no idea what this means, but if I could insert it, perhaps it could find the lost data. Should I have it search for .pages, .zip, .xml? I'm at a loss, but I know that it doesn't recognize .pages. In the meantime, I sent a support email to them and will see what happens.
    Thank you for your help.
    David

    I can't respond before.
    When the system say that your file size is 0KB, it means that nothing was saved. Only a file descripto exists.
    So, there is nothing to recover.
    Given the time the system crashed, you may have :
    (1) a simple descriptor with nothing written
    (2) a folder with every or only some of the required files.
    In this case, Phoenix is useless : it's unable to revive a folder.
    (3) a flatfile (a compressed version of the folder named above). It's only this kind of file which Phoenix may revive.
    With a bit of luck, Phoenix would be able to revive the index.xml file which was in the original folder created in the temporary folder.
    This file starts with :
    <?xml version="1.0"?><sl:document xmlns:sfa="http://developer.apple.com/namespaces/sfa"
    or
    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <sl:document xmlns:sfa="http://developer.apple.com/namespaces/sfa"
    The minimal size for a Pages index.xml file is : 520038 bytes.
    If you retrieve the index.xml file, we may try to rebuild an usable package.
    Ask the recovery tool to transfer the recovered file on an other media.
    If the document embedded pictures, the index will give their path and their size which may be useful to recover them.

  • Saved keynote document could not be read. Error message says The document does not have a valid format.

    Using Keynote '09 on an iMac OS 10.8.4. Two of my students saved a Keynote file then the next day when trying to open received an error message- The document "4b Molly.key" could not be read. The document does not have a valid format. The students are saving correctly. Any ideas how we can retrieve a working file? Why did this happen?

    Just tagging on as I encounted this problem this morning.  I'm using Mavericks, on MBP (late 2013).
    Have both Keynote 5 and 6 - tried to open the file in both, to no avail.   I have also tried the renaming of .key to .zip that seemed to work for others with previous OS, but does not fix now.  Also tried uploading to iCloud, renaming, redownloading - no fix there either.  I've tried to open on iPad and on a different user's iMac - again, get the same error.
    It worked yesterday and the day before.  It is a large file; however, I realized that from last night to this morning the only different thing I did was that I inserted photos in the keynote deck by drag & drop verses Insert/Choose and wondering if this corrupted the file.
    I'm going to hope a fix is out there somewhere and that I don't have to spend hours upon days upon weeks redoing this 98+ page deck.
    Any suggestions?

  • The document does not have a valid format.

    I created a special format document when I had Pages '08. I needed the proportions of the document to match the special paper on which the document would be printed so I created a special size for my document rather than 8 1/2 x 11. If I remember right it was closer to 8 1/2 x 13 or so. Anyway, I have now upgraded to Pages '09 and can no longer open any of these special format documents. I have versions of a couple of the documents that were created in Pages '08 without the special proportional size page and they open without issue. However the special size documents all get "The document does not have a valid format" and will not open. I really NEED these documents. I have seen some posts about renaming to a .zip and then something about an index file but I don't understand where this index file might be and what good it will do to open it. Also I know the files exist because they are still showing their original file sizes (not 0 MB). Any assistance would be appreciated.

    Don't continue to search fruhulda.
    I never saw such files.
    The only things which I may recognize are :
    the strings :
    mluc
    (10) nbNO --> Norvegian
    (16) svSE --> Sveridge
    (4) fiFI --> Finnish
    (1) daDK --> Danish
    (17) zhCN --> Chineese(1)
    (5) frFR --> French
    (8) jaJP --> Japanese
    (3) enUS --> English (US)
    (12) ptBR --> Portuguese (Brasil)
    (15) esES --> Spanish
    (18) zhTW --> Chineese(2)
    (14) ruRU --> Russian
    (9) koKR --> Korean
    (6) deDE --> Deutch (Germany)
    (2) nlNL --> Dutch (Nederland)
    (7) itIT --> Italian
    They are the symbols used to identify the languages used for 16 versions
    Two others are missing:
    (11) Polish (Polska) missing
    (13) Portuguese (Portugal) missing
    I found also
    iMac in plain ASCII and .i.M.A.C (dots are in fact NIL characters) which is the Utf 16 representation of iMac.
    During a few seconds I thought that it was a piece of System Files but the page thumbnail must be available somewhere so that the Finder is able to display it.
    I will send these genetically modified documents to Apple Bugs Hunters.

    At the very end there is also the trailing string which fool the message parser:

  • The document could not be read: the document does not have a valid format.

    I created a 10MB document in Pages about a week ago. Around that time, I reopened the document and edited it with no problems. A week later, I've tried to open the document but Pages gives me the following error:
    The document "[Document Name].pages" could not be read. The document does not have a valid format.
    I created, edited, and saved this document in Pages, so I am confused as to why Pages would be unable to re-open the file, especially as I haven't done anything to it since it worked last. I was worried that my hard drive might have corrupted the file so I ran diagnostic tests but everything was fine. I was also worried that because the file is synced with my iDisk that iDisk corrupted the file while syncing it or something but I don't know what I could do to check this. Either way, it's an important file and I need to open it: I thought that by putting it on iDisk I would have a copy in case something happened to my computer but this seems not to have helped (and maybe hurt!).
    Any file recovery tools or other ways that I can open this file?

    No, I don’t have Pages ’08 installed, but did in the past—is this a current issue?
    Pages ’09 is registered.
    I have tried dragging the file onto the app icon directly.
    To recover at least the text, I did the “rename as zip, open index.xml” trick. Of course, in order to interpret that file, you do have to understand XML (thank god I do)… but if I hadn’t, man that would’ve been a major bummer.

  • Files placed were not in UTF-8 format

    Hi Experts,
    In our project we have a pass through(no IR part) Interface from Source -
    >>PI -
    >>Target(where both Source and Target are File servers).PI should pick the file and place it in Target Directory by converting into UTF-8 format.For this we used File Type as Text and File Encoding as UTF-8 in the Receiver File channel.
    Recently the Target file server migrated to UNIX OS from WINDOWS OS and nothing was changed in PI but after the migration the Target system is facing an error saying "File is not in UTF-8 format"
    Previous when the OS is windows PI placed the files in UTF-8 format only but now after the OS migration to UNIX PI is placing ANSI files eventhough we are maintaining File Type as Text and File Encoding as UTF-8 in the Receiver File channel.
    Can anyone say how to overcome this problem and convert the files into UTF-8 and place in the Target Directory.
    Thanks and Regards,

    Hi Shabarish,
    Can you please explain a bit more about issue with the line feeds.
    and also please let me know what should I check with the end system.
    Will the module help us to convert the file into UTF-8 format..?
    Thanks for your reply.

  • IDoc to File - Russian Characters not in UTF-8 format - File Receiver

    Hello,
    My scenario is Idoc to File. My SAP sender system is a Unicode system and my RFC connection to XI is also set to a unicode connection. My idoc is sent to XI OK and whenever I look at the payload in SXMB_MONI, I see the Russian characters OK, but the problem is when the file gets created.
    My receiver system wants the file in UTF-8 format.  When the file gets created, the Russian characters are not in UTF-8 encoding format. For example, the Russian chars look like (but without the spaces inbetween): Ð # Ð µ Ñ # Ð ¶ Ð ° Ñ # Ð µ Ð » Ñ ...
    Instead, the chars should look like: Держатель
    My file type in my file receiver comm channel is binary and I am also using the AF_Modules/XMLAnonymizerBean with anonymizer.encoding of utf-8.
    Can someone please help me determine the problem?
    Thank you,
    Rhonda

    Hi Rhonda,
    Hope you have set the following for your file receiver adapter :
    1. Transfer Mode is set to Binary,
    2. File Type Text,
    3. Encoding ISO-8859-1( for Western European Latin ).
    Inorder to recognize russian Character, try as follows :
    Your sender idoc after coming into Pi has XML encoding declaration 'UTF-8'.
    Write a simple XSLT mapping to change the value of the attribute "encoding" to "ISO-8859-1" in the output XML of message mapping . Include this XSLT map as the second mapping step in your interface mapping.
    First step in your interface mapping will be your already existing message mapping.
    An example of the XSL code :
    <?xml version='1.0'?>
    <xsl:stylesheet xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform">
    <xsl:output method='xml' encoding='ISO-8859-1' />
    <xsl:template match="/">
    <xsl:copy-of select="*" />
    </xsl:template>
    </xsl:stylesheet>
    Iam not sure whether Russian language encoding has ISO-8859-2 (Eastern European Latin) or
    ISO-8859-1( for Western European Latin )...pls check out !
    or you can also do java mapping instead of above mentioned xslt mapping  if you are comfortable with java code !
    Cheers,
    Ram.

  • The document does not have a valid format. (is there a workaround?)

    i searched this one out and saw that a few other people had the same problem with no resolution. i tried "dragging the file into Pages", though that didn't really make sense and nothing happened, that is, the document didn't open. i dragged the file to the Pages icon and got a warning that it couldn't even launch Pages. Opening from within Pages gives me the error in my subject heading. Any ideas on this???

    Which are the infos returned in the infos window got thru cmd + I ?
    Is the "Show package content item available if you 'ctrl - click' the doc's icon ?

  • Numbers file on the Desktop that does not exist??

    I have a newly set up MacBook Pro with Lion 10.7.2.  I have created a numbers file that is NOT saved on the Desktop.  I have an icon of that file on the Desktop and can select it but the file doesn't exist.  I have navigated to the folder as su in Terminal and the file doesn't exist. The icon shows on the Desktop though.
    The numbers document you can see above the selected is the numbers document that I saved after I had seen what I have described above.  When I saved it there was no prompt to overwrite the file because.........it doesn't exist!!
    Ideas anyone??

    I may be making a mistake by even mentioning this, but this may be a rare case for enabling the Root User to delete the file if that is what you want to do. In almost every case, it's not a good idea to tell people to enable Root. So other more experienced users may have other suggestions. But if you log in as Root, try to delete the file, then log back out of Root, you should be OK.   Carefully read here first about Enabling Root.

  • Repair numbers file

    After saving and printing an elaborate numbers spead sheet, I needed to go back to revise some of the numbers in the projection.  When I try to open the file, the pop up reports: The document "file name" count not be read.  The document does not have a valid format.  How can I repair this?

    This behavior may surface in several cases.
    (1) you created/saved the document with Numbers '09 then tried to open it with Numbers '08
    (2) the document is corrupted.
    I'm wondering how long we will see questions from users which don't apply the basic rules: never trust upon a single copy of a document.
    Always keep several consecutive saved versions so, if the version saved at time t appears to be wrong, version saved at time t-x will be in good state.
    At this time, it's too late to buy this kind of insurance.
    You may send the doc to my mailbox. This way I would be able to try to revive all or some parts of the otherwise defunct file.

  • Recovering the Numbers File

    I was working on my file and I had to force to quit. I forgot to save my file. now when I try to reopen the file I have this notice: "The document does not have a valid format." How can I recover my file?

    The best way to to go back to the last backed up version using time machine.  Next best is to get the last version of you file you emailed or shared.  Another option is to recover using Dropbox to a previous date.
