Numbers instead of Contacts iOS Imessage

Hi I am trying to use Imessage for the first time. I was wondering for the iOS imessage why a person's number is coming up instead of the contact name? when I went i talk with people who have Imessage, their number comes up instead of their contact name in the message.  This is very confusing because when I look back at all of the messages it says the contact names and I still have all my contacts. Is anyone else having this problem? I know for my one friend who just got his iOS imessage, my email appears rather then my contact name.  thanks! -Fallon

But that is not my phone number. Very strange, I suppose if i at least set it to my email, friends will have a clue who I am in the meantime-while i try to figure out why a different number is coming up...
Thanks for your advice.

    Check to see if you have contacts in your Contacts app. This is something that can happen sometimes, and is usually cured by resetting the phone. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. The phone will reboot. No data will be lost.

  • My phone displays numbers instead of contact names for incoming calls and text - how do I fix?

    My phone displays numbers instead of contact names for incoming calls and text - how do I fix?  It used to display the names if there was a contact listed, now it just shows numbers regardless of whether or not the number corresponds to a contact name in the contact list.  Can anyone help?  I googled this problem and lots of folks have experienced it, however there is not a consensus for a resolution.

    Alexandribill, I have been having the exact same issue.  I got a new phone and restored my contacts.  If the # doesn't have the area code first then the name isn't shown.  I just added my husbands area code to my phone and called my phone from his and now his name shows up...Ugh, I have to go through and manually add the area code to all my contacts....
    I'd say Verizon needs to rewrite their program to include the area code in the restoring from backup process!

    Make sure the numbers are assigned to a contact.

  • When switching my CallerID to my AppleID, my iphone shows numbers instead of contact names.

    I recently bought a shiny new iPad 3, and decided I want my imessages in sync between my iphone (4) and my iPad. To that end, I switched my callerID in my iphone settings (settings > messages > Receive at > Caller ID) to my apple-id, and made sure it's the same between my ipad and iphone. The syncing works beautifully and I'm very happy about it.
    However, my iPhone started showing the phone number instead of the contact name for imessages. I verified, on my ipad it shows the name still. My address book is synced via iCloud, and my contact's aren't duplicated. (Each phone number is unique)
    When I set the callerID back to my own phone number, it correctly shows the name, but my imessages aren't in sync anymore. Really annoying. Is there anything I can do to force iOS to always show the contact name instead of the phone number in messages?
    EDIT: some "regular" sms contacts aren't showing their names either after switching. Very strange.

    I had this problem since i restored my iPhone 4 onto my iPhone 4s. turned out to be a corrupted address book database on the phone.
    deleting the database @ /Users/Library/AddressBook (all files starting with AddressBook) (while Addressbook NOT running and when iCloud sync and iTunes sync both off) and re-run address book to create empty database before re enable sync solved it!

  • Why is my Messages app showing numbers instead of contacts?

    So my iPhone 4S had a dead pixel so I got a replacement from the Apple Store. I set it up, loaded my iCloud backup and imported my contacts. Texts showed up, labeled as numbers and not as the contact that corresponds to that number.
    Consequently, when I message someone, like John Smith in Messages, the header will no longer show up as John Smith, but as his number. Any fixes?
    Important note: this bug also occurs with iMessage, and it's insistent on adding a 1 to the number. Not sure if this is the case with calls.

    I am seeing a similar problem. But only on two contacts, my wife and son, who both have iPhone 4's with iOS 5. I have added the phone numbers to contacts multiple times, but the keep reverting back to phone numbers and once from number to the name.

  • My text messages are showing up as numbers instead of contact names

    I recently got a new iphone 4 because I broke the screen on the old one... I backed up the old one on my Mac in itunes then put the backed up info on my new iphone4.  The phone numbers now appear in this format xxx-xxxxxxx in my contact list.  When people from my contact list text me, I can't tell who they are because only their number shows up... not their name and the numbers show up in xxx-xxx-xxxx format.  I think this is my problem.  I went back to my contact list and tried to put the dash where it is supposed to go but I don't have any control over the dashes.  The phone puts them in where it wants to.  How can I fix this?  I've tried taking everything back out of my phone and starting over and that didn't do it.

        Let's get your phone back to normal pronto Tinsko! First troubleshooting step is to reprogram your phone as doing this has resolved similar issue for others, here is how to do it:
    1) Open the Phone and dial *228. This is a Verizon over-the-air programming number.
    2) When the system answer press 1 for "Program or activate your phone"
    3) Wait for the call to disconnect and then power off and on.

  • Recieved SMSs showing numbers instead of contact names

    Hi
    My iPhone 4 shows only numbers starting with +20 (Egypt's International code) with recieved SMSs and the only way to show contact names is to add +20 to all of my contacts (with an app) but that would make recieved "calls" show numbers and not names !!!
    Any way to fix that ?

    Check to see if you have contacts in your Contacts app. This is something that can happen sometimes, and is usually cured by resetting the phone. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. The phone will reboot. No data will be lost.

  • My wifes iPhone is listing two numbers for one contact in iMessage but she only has one number for her in her contacts.

    My wife was playing with her iPhone 5 today and decided she wanted to text one of her friends. Upon typing in their name she noticed that it listed them twice and the second one had another number she hadn't put into contacts. I checked her contacts and there is only one entry for this person and only one number. It is linked to facebook but facebook's information is exactly what we already have. So the issue is, where did this other number coming from and why can't I find it anywhere in the phone to delete it..

    ACtually that's the problem. The friend she was going to text doesn't have an iPhone nor has she ever had an iPhone. She has a *sighs and shakes head* Samsung galaxy s3. So that wouldn't be the problem. The only thing that I can think of is that her friend changed her number on Facebook and its like a bad cookie or something that's causing the number to show up on her phone. I also wend to the finder from her home screen on her iPhone And searched for the incorrect number and it didn't return any results.

  • Numbers instead of names

    My messages and calls are suddenly showing up with contact numbers instead of contact names.  How do I get the names back?

    Turning iMessage off and back on worked for me.

  • Numbers instead of names in Messages

    A couple of days ago, my "recent calls" list started showing numbers instead of contact names, but the Messages app still showed names.  I did the Verizon *228 reset and the recent calls changed to names, but the Messages switched to numbers.  I have tried doing the *228 again, doing a reset on the network settings and also doing a hard reset on the phone, but it didn't work.    Any ideas?  Thanks!

    Hopefully the solution below will solve the problem your experiencing.
    Turn off your iPhone;
    Turn it back on;
    Remove the sim card for a few seconds;
    Replace it and see if that fixed it. If not, restart your iPhone again.

  • IMessage displays numbers instead of names for some contacts

    Hello All,
    I have googled this problem and searched these forums in attempt to fix this issue but to no avail just yet. To date I have tried:
    Switching off iMessage, performing a soft reboot, switching iMessage back on
    Same as above, but doing a hard reset instead
    Same as above with both of my iTunes email addresses (I had an old one I used before I upgraded to the iPhone 4)
    Adding +1 to my contact names
    Choose "add to existing contact" from iMessage and replacing the old number
    Turning off icloud, Removing all the contacts from my phone, and then turning iCloud back on
    Restoring system settings
    Nothing has worked and I get a mix of names or numbers in iMessage.
    It is severely annoying (1st world problems, right?) as I'm tour and communicate with many promoters via text (600 contacts and growing...).
    Does anyone have any other ideas?
