Numbers is much more responsive under leopard

I am finding that Numbers is much more responsive under leopard... no longer an irritation waiting for the program to become usable after switching to it... still a bit more delay than there should be but much better.
Stephen

it seems to me to still be awfull slow for the most simple tasks like changing the number of decimals to display, changing it from 1 to 2 digits, on a table that is only 28 rows long and 2 columns wide, it takes about 2 minutes
I just tried creating a default table - 40-odd rows, 12 columns, and filled them all with pi(). Changing the number of decimal places for the whole table went very quickly - maybe 0.5 seconds.
I then tried filling with nearly all different numbers, with different numbers of decimals. Now changing the number of decimals takes several seconds each time.

  • DrawRect method called more often under Leopard than Tiger?

I have 2 identical versions of a graphics app, one compiled with Xcode 2.5 on a PPC running 10.4.11, the other compiled with Xcode 3.0 on a MacBook Pro running 10.5.6. Running the app under Leopard, the -drawRect method of my custom view is called every time I change focus. This results in excessive, unnecessary redraws. Under Tiger, this does not happen. Any ideas as to what's happening under Leopard that's different than running under Tiger? And how can I suppress the excessive redraws under Leopard?

They're not identical if they're built in completely different environments. Look at the stack traces and see why it's being invalidated.

  • Much Improved Performance w/Leopard!

I am surprised I have not seen more about the performance improvement. I was worried my G4 PowerBook would take a hit, but I have been editing photos in iPhoto and CS3 PS and it's noticeably faster than in Tiger. My archive and install was done in 45 minutes, no problems, and I'm enjoying Leopard. I read in another post about creating a 00.jpg image to sort first in the stack so you can put whatever image you want there to show through. There's some room for future updates, but there must have been some serious back-end work to give such a serious boost to performance on an old Powerbook.

I agree, with my old PB 1ghz, I found an increase in response and loading of folders and webpages. It surprised me. I expected browsing of my files with cover flow to slow down the machine, I find it much more responsive then large directories loaded in Tiger's finder.

  • How much more will MacBook cost after Mac OS X Leopard comes out?

How much more will the Macbook cost after OS X Leopard comes out? Leopard will come standard with all macs after it comes out, won't it?

    HI--
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
How much more will the Macbook cost after OS X
    Leopard comes out?
There's no way of knowing for sure, of course, but typically Apple's hardware doesn't go up in price when a new OS comes out. The price changes (up and down) in response to other factors.
    Leopard will come standard
with all macs after it comes out, won't it?
In the past, there have sometimes been short transition times when the old OS was pre-loaded on new computers, but the box included upgrade CDs. Or you might get a coupon for the new OS for a nominal fee of $20.
At this point, only Apple knows how they plan on handling the transition to Leopard, and anything anyone outside Apple is just speculating.

Since loading Lion, I've experienced much more instability than Snow Leopard. In particular, Mail crashes with regularity, full-screen apps seem to run slower and show the beach ball more often for longer, etc. I love the features, but I'm disappointed with the performance. Any help coming from Apple?  I've been sending them so many reports after crashes, that their file must be full!

Summoning max. courage, I did what you advised. Here is the result. What does this tell you? My Lion 7.2 (mid 2011 iMac) has several annoying glitches (which I have so far tolerated through gritted teeth) but none that have actually stopped me working.
BTW, I see several items involving CleanMyMac which I did not know I had. It is generally villified as a trouble-maker. Spotlight can't find an app. or a utility of that name. How can I get rid of what's there please? Just delete?

Yes, Apple has removed this feature.

  • WL server failed to response under load

    Hi
We have a quite strange situation on my sight. Under load our WL 10.3.2 server failed to response. We are using RestEasy with HttpClient version 3.1 to coordinate with web service deployed as WAR.
What we have is a calculation process that run on 4 containers based on 4 physical machines and each of them send request to WL during calculation.
Each run we see a messages from HttpClient like this:
[THREAD1] INFO   I/O exception (org.apache.commons.httpclient.NoHttpResponseException) caught when processing request: The server OUR_SERVER_NAME failed to respond
    [THREAD1] INFO   Retrying request
The HttpClient make several requests until get necessary data.
I want to understand why WL can refuse connections. I read about WL thread pool that process http request and understand that WL allocate separate thread to process web request and the numbers of threads is not bounded in default configuration. Also our server is configured Maximum Open Sockets: -1 which means that the number of open sockets is unlimited.
From this thread I'd want to understand where the issue is? Is it on WL side or it's a problem of our business logic? Can you guys help to deeper investigate the situation.
What should I check more in order to understand that our WL server is configured to work with as much requests as we want?

    Thanks for a good explanation!
Linux server it's not in my competencies but what we have now is:
    root    soft    nofile  3072
    root    hard    nofile  65536
So the upper number is really big. As I understood it's a config for whole processes in operation system.
But I go further and find these numbers for our WL managed server.
    cat /proc/23085/limits
Limit                     Soft Limit           Hard Limit           Units
Max cpu time              unlimited            unlimited            seconds
Max file size             unlimited            unlimited            bytes
Max data size             unlimited            unlimited            bytes
Max stack size            10485760             unlimited            bytes
Max core file size        0                    unlimited            bytes
Max resident set          unlimited            unlimited            bytes
    Max processes             578455               578455               processes
Max open files            8192                 8192                 files
Max locked memory         32768                32768                bytes
Max address space         unlimited            unlimited            bytes
Max file locks            unlimited            unlimited            locks
Max pending signals       578455               578455               signals
Max msgqueue size         819200               819200               bytes
    Max nice priority         0                    0
    Max realtime priority     0                    0
Again it's only a config numbers. If continue moving in this direction I'd want to see the real numbers when the server is under load. So finding these numbers I would make an assumption that the issue is here. Don't you know is there a log file or history file where I can find a max open file descriptors for WL server?

  • Some images created in Tiger unusable under Leopard - can crash Aperture

I have tried both updates and clean installs of Leopard on my MBP and external firewire disks. In both cases I find that a large number of images in my libraries (built under Tiger), give Aperture fits. For example, whilst I can see thumbnails, I can't export versions - messages come up to say the images can't be decoded. Similarly, if I try to edit or view some images full screen, I get a message saying "unsupported format". At times, trying to work with these images crashes Aperture.
In a couple of cases, I still have the offending images on cards and I was then able to import them anew into Aperture (running under Leopard) - these work OK.
Boinx Fotomagico under Leopard stopped running and quit without warning trying to run previously created slideshows that incorporate some of the above-mentioned images.
I conclude that there is a problem with Leopard's treatment of images rather than Aperture specifically. However, I have no clue how to address the problem. At present Leopard is just unusable for me.

    Hello
a - my way of life is the Winston Churchil's one : "absolutely no sport"
b - as during more than 30 years I ruled a pottery workshop using a process which is unique worldwide, I know what confidentiality means.
c - Whe I exchange with Apple, they don't ask me to sign a Non Disclosure Agreement.
They perfectly know that when I beta tested I NEVER violate the signed ones.
I'm aware of anomalies when using Numbers under Leopard.
Maybe you met one which I ignored.
Knowing such of these problems, I decided to use Tiger as my main operating system.
Here, as I play safety, Leopard is always in test, not in real use.

  • IPhoto is hanging up under Leopard

iPhoto under Leopard will not complete an import from folder on hard drive. It imports, but at the last step, finishing import, just appears to hang there. According to force quit, iPhoto is still running. If I quit iphoto the images are stored in recovered photos folder. I ran iPhoto all night long and still it is sitting there with a quarter inch on the display bar to go.
This same import operation works under Tiger (running on external drive) on the same photo folder.
    Suggestions?

    Terence Devlin wrote:
Are you trying to import more than a 1,000 pics at a time?
yes, is that an issue? I did not see any documentation saying I am limited in number of pictures that I can import.
How big is your HD and how much free space on it?
250GB with 110 gig free space
Have you tried importing in smaller groups?
Yes and it did work but it is a pain to split 14k pictures into smaller groups
    Regards
    TD
Even if smaller groups work, it just proves that iphoto is not working properly. All these suggestions are a workaorund. I am not doing anything extra ordinary here. A single week long vacation can generate more than 1000 pictures. iPhoto shoudl be able to handle that. As I said Picasa handled it all flawlessly. If it is a lmitation, it should be documented.

No whait!, let me start where it all began, 2009, a december (erhh.. iii think? Hwatever!) litlle me hwere nearly Totally blank to the computer world. And suddenly it stood there on the table, a shining (it was shining back there) new "hp pavillion entertainment pc" with its smell of fresh plastic mixed hwith the strong smell from the cardboardbox, remember it as if it were yesterday
... Since then.... I have today a good solid pc knowing! (at more advance level cmd, bott menu, recovery, blah, blah... NERD!) here at the last awhile, ive prommised to make a lot! A lot of video projects!

    NOW I WANT APPLE!!
But but but... Hwat should i get????

    2. I repeat: NOT a billionare!
    3. I also need portability for every day use beyond the hardcore creative editing and use

    MY ACTUAL QUESTION.... :
Now it is yours turn to please! be creative! Please! Hwat does all you genius heads! think and say?
WILL A super tuned MACBBOK PRO COMBINED WITH ACCESSORIES, AT ALL, BE ABLE TO REPLACE A STRONG MAC PRO, OR AT LEAST BE MORE THAN ENOUGH FOR REALLY HEAVY STUFF? And if yes, HOW strong actually (ram,cpu,gpu...) will it need to have to be "more than enough"?
If no, what would all of  you then suggest that is perfect in relation to everything?
    PLEASE ANSWER!!

    Jonatan R. wrote:
WILL A super tuned MACBBOK PRO COMBINED WITH ACCESSORIES, AT ALL, BE ABLE TO REPLACE A STRONG MAC PRO,
    No,
the MacPro is the muscle machine and not constrained by power or cooling limitations like the MacBoo Pro is.
OR AT LEAST BE MORE THAN ENOUGH FOR REALLY HEAVY STUFF?
If you press the MacBook Pro like a desktop machine, it will blow fans like a hurricane but will do the job eventually.
The longer you blow fans on a laptop, the sooner it clogs up with crippling dust and shortens the life of the machine.
You'll need the top end 15" or better, not the 13" as it has no dedicated graphics, only CPU graphics.
Preferably if you just now getting into video, you should be considering Avid on a Windows 7 tower, it's because Apple has been ignoring the MacPro for hardware updates to improve it and it seems like they don't want to carry it anymore. Also the last Final Cut Pro version had Hollywood up in arms as Apple removed a lot of required abilities to make it more "consumer friendly" which upset the Pro market who likes control.
Apple is focusing on the consumer computing market and getting away from the "Pro" market which needs the heavier hardware to handle video needs. They stopped selling the X-RAID and the X-Server, so Apple really isn't a "computer" company any longer.
Sure you can use a MacBook Pro and a external monitor for doing home movies and such occasionally, but if your into serious production you need to consdier other options now.
There is nothing wrong in getting a MacBook Air and a Windows 7 professional video tower too.

  • Problems with ViaVoice under Leopard, especially key mapping problems

ViaVoice's behavior has changed considerably under Leopard. First I will discuss the key mapping problem, since I'm eagerly looking for an answer to this problem. At the end of this post, I will voice some of the other problems I've experienced for those who may be interested. The key mapping problem may be specific to the fact that I use a foreign keyboard with a US version of ViaVoice.
    INTRO:
I have used ViaVoice on my Mac for years, more or less without problems (ViaVoice's bugginess is notorious).
Those who know ViaVoice will know that one has two general options for dictation. One can dictate into ViaVoice's so-called SpeakPad, which allows special formatting, editing and dictation error correction within the dictated text, or one can dictate into "external" software such as Microsoft Word, in which case ViaVoice just sends a string of characters to that software. SpeakPad appears to make strong use of the operating system's built-in functionality for character formatting, document formatting, etc.
    *MY PROBLEM*
I have a German keyboard on my PowerBook, yet dictate in US English. When I dictated into SpeakPad under Tiger, all characters appeared correctly. However, when I dictated into Microsoft Word using Tiger, I had to switch the keyboard mapping from German to US to get all characters (that means including the characters that are located at different positions on a German keyboard than they are on a US keyboard such as y, z, apostrophes and parentheses) to appear correctly.
Under Leopard, things have changed. Now it doesn't matter whether I dictate into SpeakPad or Word; the results are the same and many characters do not appear correctly.
If set to a German keyboard, y and z appear as expected. To name a few irregularities:
    "(" appears as ")"
    ")" appears as "="
    apostrophes appear as "#" and
    ";" appears as ","
If set to a US keyboard, y and z are interchanged. "(" and ")" appear as expected. Apostrophes appear as "\" and ";" appears as ","
By comparison, if typed (as opposed to dictated, as in the examples above) "correctly" (i.e. based on the letters printed on the keyboard) on a German keyboard set to imitate a US keyboard:
    y and z are interchanged
    apostrophes appear as "|"
    "(" appears as "*"
    ")" appears as "(" and
";" appears as the symbol for "less than"
Since I don't have a US keyboard, I can't say how it would behave if set to imitate a German keyboard, i.e. if there's a correlation to the results I get when I dictate.
Since I was previously able to dictate correctly into SpeakPad by setting the keyboard to "German" and into Word by setting the keyboard to "US," I presume that this is a problem in Leopard, not ViaVoice.
*OTHER PROBLEMS WITH VIAVOICE UNDER LEOPARD*
In addition to the aforementioned key mapping problems (that may be specific to those of us with foreign keyboards), ViaVoice appears to have lost considerable functionality in Leopard. I cannot access SpeakPad's Preferences and the correction window. Moreover, the traffic-light like window buttons have disappeared from the VoiceCenter (although they work if you click where they should be). SetupAssistent appears to function.
I've written to Nuance about these problems, but have little hope that they will invest the time in producing a patch since they haven't released any updates since 2003.

    Thrums1,
I've never had to "register" ViaVoice after updating the system. I thus suspect you haven't fully followed my above, three-step advice (particularly step 3).
    1) Reinstall ViaVoice from CD.
    2) Update to the latest version (using the patch downloadable from Nuance's website).
    3) Replace the “temp” and “users” folders (in the "ViaVoice" folder at the upper level of your home directory) by a previous copy thereof. When I say previous copy, I mean a copy from when ViaVoice was still working properly, e.g. a copy from when it was running under Tiger.
As I said, I've gotten ViaVoice to survive several system updates by following the above steps. To my knowledge, the last step is critical since it saves you from having to reconfigure ViaVoice under the new operating system (in this case Leopard). I suspect that ViaVoice is crashing on your system because it's trying to start some module of the SetUpAssistant that is incompatible with Leopard (as many are). If you instead use old copies of the "temp" and "users" folders (from the previous system), then ViaVoice doesn't have to go through the initial "registration" process; ViaVoice doesn't need the SetUpAssistant; and all is (more or less) fine.
    Good luck!
BTW, to my knowledge, Dictate only runs on Intel Macs. It thus won't run on a G4 iBook, just as it won't run on my PowerBook G4.

So i have an ubuntu system running cups 1.2.8 as a print server. i have an epson stylus colour 760 plugged in and configured and working.

  • JPA Query.setFirstResult(int) ... What if the table has much more entries

    Hello.
I want to page my query results but I have a table that has a long primary key. As I see Querry.setFirstResult() can only take an int as a parameter.
How can I page my results if I have much more than 2,147,483,647 entries? I could implement it by myself... but isn't there some standard way?

I'd say in theory it is not possible to do that with JPA (or the underlying ORM implementations). Luckily in practice there is no need for such functionality. Who is going to paginate more than 2 billion results?I find it very plausible. Say you have a table that might grow very large ... with A LOT of entries ( more than 2 bilion ) and you want to be able to browse all of them in a client GUI.

  • Did you find camera raw 7.2 more responsive?

    hi
did you find camera raw 7.2 more responsive ?
i'm talking about sliders and lag
    i run it under w7 32bit photoshop cs6 normal update to 13.0.1
    thanks

For me it's a little faster than 7.1 to initially show the dialog on an open (by a small fraction of a second), but about the same as 7.0.  It's a bit slower to open an image into Photoshop once the button has been hit, though.
I haven't seen any difference in the control response - it was interactive with virtually instantaneous response before for me and 7.2 was the same.  An image quality issue, where the new Defringe feature doesn't quite work as well as its predecessor has caused me to drop back to version 7.0, though, and I do enjoy the faster opens.
I posted a set of instructions for benchmarking your performance at the following link, though there is nothing there about control responsiveness.  You may want to go through that process, and also measure your control responsiveness.  If you can show that your system opens up Camera Raw and does the actual conversions at the same speed as others' systems, yet has vastly slower control response, that could make your point that you have a specific problem.
