Numbers keeps auto-opening a file

For some reason, Numbers 3.0.1 keeps on trying to open an Excel file from an email (and since there are unsupported features, we get the bouncing icon on the dock). Any ideas why Numbers keeps on trying to open the file even though we have closed it multiple times?

Answering my own question with a work-around....
I saved the file off to the desktop and allowed Numbers to update it to the latest version.  I then closed the file window.  I could then delete the file and Numbers stops trying to open a file that no longer exists.

  • Resize dialog keeps auto opening everytime I open a file

So we just got rid of one of our designers and the computer I got him was a tad better then the workstation I am using. Over the weekend I decided to give my machine to my boss who has a ancient slow PC, and take the newer faster box for myself.
All went well, but I am encountering 1 thing that I can't make go away.
Everytime I open I file in Photoshop (cs3), .psd, .jpg... whatever the file type it opens the file then opens the re-size mage dialog box and tries and prompts me to re-size the newly opened file.
I have been up and down the preferences and plug-ins and I can't find whatever this guy did to cause this behavior and undo it.
Does anyone have any suggestions how I can stop this from continuing? It isn't stopping me from doing my work but after half a day of working I am throughly annoyed with it.
    Thanks for any insight.

Try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776?tstart=0
You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.
It will do what checking preferences inside PS will not clear.
A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.

  • [Solved] Auto-open a file manager after mounting with udev rules

    Hellooooo,
I followed the udev Wiki for auto mounting USBs and it now works great.
The only problem is: how can I automatically open a file manager of the mounted directory? I tried putting this at the end of the "ACTION=="add"," section in "/etc/udev/rules.d/11-media-by-label-auto-mount.rules" but for some reason nothing happens:
    , RUN+="/usr/bin/dolphin /media/%E{dir_name}"
Even if I just try to open dolphin with the "ACTION=="add"," section nothing happens either way.
So what am I doing wrong?

In that case, the best choice in my opinion is to use Automounting UDisks Wrappers :
devmon is a script developed by IgnorantGuru. He left Arch Linux, but the package in AUR is still there and is the last version. For a future new release, it should be available at his blog site. The script is distro independent.
My udisksvm script, in its default state, doesn't launch a file manager after automounting, but it is not a big thing to let the automounting be done and then manually open a file manager (a new entry in the traydevice right-click menu can also be added for that).
If you can do without automounting, there is also the bashmount script from jnguyen.
All these scripts don't require writing any udev rules, they use udisks instead.
I hope you could find something you like and which will suit your wishes.

  • Numbers can't open xls file by Windows Foxpro.

I have to open XLS files made by exporting a table in FoxPro using:
EXPORT TO FileName XLS as mentioned in:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/library/1515xf19(v=vs.80).aspx
Whenever I try to open this file in Numbers I get the following error:
I am using Number version 3.2 (1861) on Mac OS X Mavericks (10.9.3).
Any solution/patch to open these files?

  • Numbers will not open older files

I have Numbers '09 installed on my MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion OS. Recently I went through using Migration Assistant to move apps, adat etc., to a new MBPro 13. After this I have found that Numbers will not open many of the numbers files on either the old or the new machine--the problem probably existed before the migration but I had not had to access these files for quite a while. The message I get is simply "Numbers cannot open this file" I can see the contents in Preview and I was able to use a 3rd party service to get it converted into a .cvs file and thence to Excel. Numbers will open and create new numbers files seemingly OK. I have run repair permissions but no change.
I have seen a history of a similar problem from some time ago so I don't know if this is an old problem that has just surfaced on my machine or what.

  • Numbers doesn't open a file modify on numbers ipad

    hi there,
modified a numbers file on ipad and also modified its name ! (may be an error?)
    saved on the cloud
now,'m trying to open it with numbers (v 3,0) of my mac
get this answer: can't open file because you need last version of numbers!!!
being sending to the appstore,I see I already have downloaded the last version
    so,what?
    thx

    Hi,
Perhaps without realizing it you probably have two versions of Numbers on your Mac, Numbers 3.x (it should now be 3.1) in your main Applications folder and Numbers 2.3 in a subfolder named iWork '09. Open the document with the Numbers in your main Applications folder (its icon has four columns) and all should be well.

  • Numbers can't open Excel files generated by SQL Reporting Services

    Hi
I have an issue with Numbers '09 not being able top open certain Excel files. The Excel files in question are XLS files (not XLSX) and come from SQL Reporting Services. They open fine with Excel on the Mac and on Windows - but Numbers on both the Mac and iPad pops up with an "Invalid file format" when trying to open them.
I see this as a problem with Numbers and would like to send Apple an example file so they can look at improving their Excel file support but I can't find anywhere to do this.
Do Apple monitor these forums? Has anyone else experienced this issue?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike.

    Thanks
I compared the beginning of your file to the beginning of two XL ones which are on my machine (in fact, they are files created with openOffice).
You may see that there are many differences.
They may explain the different behaviour.
If someone is able to drive Excel with an AppleScript,
he may write a script opening your document in Excel,
    saving it
opening the newly saved file in Numbers.
As I don't own Excel, I ignore its required syntax so I can't write a clean script.
If the XL's syntax is the same than the Numbers one, this quick and dirty one may do the trick :
set aFile to (path to desktop as text) & "Treatment Report No Header.xls"
    tell application "System Events"
set aName to name of disk item aFile
    end tell
    tell application "Numbers"
    open file aFile
save document 1 (* maybe save document aName *)
close document 1 (* maybe close document aName *)
    end tell
    tell application "Numbers"
    open aFile
    end tell

  • Numbers can't open excel files that requires a password

How can I open an excel file that requires a password? I recently purchased the 'Numbers' program and I get an error message saying that Numbers cannot open an encrypted file. However, I can open and view the file (but not edit).
    Apple needs to fix this!
Any suggestions on how to open a password protected file using Numbers?
    Thanks,

  • MS Word  - Auto-Opening downloaded files

I teach an online class and students submit MS Word attachments. Up until now, I have been able to click on the attachment link and the file opens up in MS Word (I have been using Office 2008). Just recently, when I click on the attachment link, it will open up MS Word, but not the file. I have to go find it in the download folder. I would like to remove this extra search step. Any idea where I can change that preference?

    HI Swim,
As for assigning file downloads... if you are using Safari, launch Safari then click Safari/Preferences in the Menu. When the Preferences window appears, click the General tab at the top. About half way down it says: Save downloaded files to: Click the pop up menu and choose the option that works best for you. The Desktop is usually the quickest way to find a recently downloaded file.
As for MS Word. If you keep the MS Word icon in the Dock, just drag the file you downloaded to the MS Word icon and it should launch MS Word for you and the specified file.
*******Changing the application that opens a document*********
You can select a specific application to open a document. You may want to do this if you prefer using a certain application or if you don't have the application that was used to create the document.
Select the document in the Finder and choose File > Get Info.
Click "Open with" in the Info window.
Choose an application from the pop-up menu or choose Other to locate a different application.
To use the application you chose to open all similar documents (the same type as the current document and created by the same application), click Change All.

  • The inspector keeps auto opening and closing. It's making it near impossible to use firefox.

I simply cannot get the inspector to stop opening. I've tried some steps listed through other support posts regarding disabling the inspector and firebug, but neither of those worked. I'm writing this up in chrome at the moment. The only way I can stop it from doing what it's doing is by holding either Shift, Control, or Alt. I've checked to see if these keys were stuck or somehow going off on their own, but they aren't. I've even restarted my computer and this is still happening. Any help would be appreciated.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

  • How to diable auto open downloaded files?

currently using firefox 21.0 i believe
    thanks in advance

Hmmmm......Well, I don't think its Firefox. What kind of files
does this happen? All files, EXE files, music, video, updates?
What directory are you downloading to? Do you have the same
problem with other web browsers? If you haven't used another
browser, try it with one of the web sites that you have the problem.
Speaking of that, is it all web sites, some sites, a few sites?
Are you using the Firefox downloader or another. Some web
sites use there own download software.

  • Numbers not opening .xls files (same with pages...)

    hi,
just got my new imac and i've been searching for information as to why i can't open .xls or .doc files in iwork. everything is up to date. it worked on my old mac. any suggestions? i tried renaming the extensions to .numbers or .pages and still won't open.
    thanks,

If you are trying to open them by double-clicking on the document, then select one of the documents. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Open With panel select Pages from the dropdown menu then click on the Change All button. Repeat for .xls files except choose Numbers.
Or open the files from within Numbers or Pages using the File menu in the program. Then save the file as a Numbers or Pages document using Save As (hold down the OPTION key and select Save As in the File menu.

  • How do stop PREVIEW from auto-opening images?

I'm scanning all my old slides. And every time I finish a scan, Preview automatically opens the pic.
I have Preview as my jpg default, which I would like to keep (not Photoshop, etc).
But I'd like Preview to NOT auto-open these files once they're created.
    Any ideas?
    tia

Not sure what printer or scanning software you are using, but if you open and use Image Capture in your App Folder you can direct the Scan To: any number of Folders, Apps or Desktop.

  • How do I change the default program setting when I download a file.  Numbers keeps opening the file intended for Quicken.

For example; Numbers keeps opening downloaded files intended for Quicken.  I can change the program to open the download, but I can't find a way to make the change be the default.

In Finder locate a file you're having trouble with, highlight the file and type Command I (I as in Ivan). In the box called Open With choose the app you want to use to open the file with. Right below that  you will see Use this apps to open all documents like this one then click the button right below that calledChange All.
