Numbers keeps making Folder copies

I just upgraded Numbers to its latest version and as soon as I did, I begin having a problem using files. About every few seconds the program automatically makes a folder on my desktop with the name of the file.folder. Inside is 2 MB of previews, data files, metadata files, etc. And as I use Numbers document, it just keeps making copies of this folder. It just made 20 copies in one minute. This is very irritating and not needed. Please help me remove this glitch. Also, I am upgraded to Yosemite OS.

That sounds a lot more like something that StuffIt Expander would do than something Numbers would. There is a preference setting in Stuffit Expander to automatically expand archives in some watch folder, by default the Desktop. Since a Numbers "file" is a specially tagged zip archive of a folder, and Expander is too dumb to recognize the special nature of that document, every time Numbers autosaves, Expander creates another folder.
I would consider it a bad idea to let Stuffit automatically expand anything.
A lot of people also consider it to be bad practice to save files on the Desktop.

I did not create the file to be read-only. I created to be able to continue to add to it as I work on it.

  • Why does Mac OX 10.6.8 keep making copies of a file anytime I download, copy, or move a file?

Why does Mac OX 10.6.8 keep making copies of a file anytime I download, copy, or move a file? It will copy, dowload or move the file, then begin making copies until I reboot. This makes it impossible to deal wit hfiles unless I want to spend a lot of time rebooting after every time, then deleting all the redundant copies.

If I understand what you are saying this is very strange.  Sure you tried Reparing Permissions and all that.  Also sure you're aware that when moving a file from the hard disk to an external - the default is to make a copy rather than a move.  If the movement is with the same disk (e.g. hard disk - hard disk) the Default is a Move rather than Copy.
Anyway try this: Move a file between location where you would normally have this problem while holding the Command Key (which triggers a Move rather than a Copy).  I would also try quickly setting up a New User Account and see if the problem is present within this New Account.  This may provide a clue as to what is happening.
Also, what browser are you using when the download problem happens?

  • Cs2 keeps making a folder i don't want on my Server

hi guys. we just got a server and now everytime we open photoshop up it creates a folder called our username on the root of the server and we have to keep deleting it. it's frustrating and also confusing as we have another folder deeper down the subdirectories on the server with this name so would rather photoshop didn't keep making this folder.
how can i stop this? please someone help with this weird problem.
    thanks.

Umm, what server? How do you connect? How do you handle user profiles? PS (or any other app for that matter) would only create folders, if it cannot find the user home directory or a valid temp directory, so it's more or less a configuration issue with the server, its drive mapping and user permissions, I'd say.

  • Energy Management software keeps making shortcuts in the Start Menu

I just recently reformatted my laptop and installed Windows 7 Ultimate. I got the drivers from my laptop model's download page in the Lenovo support website, and everything was working fine - except for when the Lenovo Energy Management software would keep making shortcuts in the Start Menu every time I reboot the system.
I had my Start Menu organized, created folders to categorize my apps, so it's really annoying when a folder I already deleted pops up every time I start my laptop. Why does it happen? Is there a fix for it?

    Hi Pommy,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
I’m sorry to hear that a shortcut is automatically getting created, I would suggest you to re-install the LEM (Lenovo Energy Management) in the computer and while installing the driver right click on the downloaded file and select “Run as administrator” option to get it installed without any error.
Do post us back if the issue persists.
    Best Regards

  • Numbers keeps crashing everytime when i start working on a worksheet

Since a few days Numbers keeps crashing when i start to work on a worksheet. And it doesn't matter if it's a template or a empty screen. I keep sending the reports to Cupertino.

I am also experiencing this problem since yesterday on two computers. I know exactly what caused the problem to start happening, because I replicated it on the second computer. Now I have to figure out how to fix it.
For the record, in case the iWork engineering team is watching:
    1. I opened a Numbers document from iCloud.
    2. I attempted to Duplicate that document by pressing Shift-Command-S.
    3. The progress bar dialog appeared saying that it was duplicating the document, but the progress bar just got stuck. After an hour it was still there. Numbers had obviously hung.
    4. I force-quit Numbers by option-control-clicking on its icon in the Dock.
    5. Ever since, Numbers crashes on startup with the following message in the crash log:
*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '-[SFUDateFormat decimalPlaces]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x10014020'
    6. I deleted all Numbers preference files from the Preferences folder. It didn't help.
    7. I turned off Document & Data syncing in iCloud. It didn't help.
    8. Opening the same document on another machine and repeating above caused the exact same thing to happen. It appears that there was some corruption about that document that caused Duplicate to fail. Immediately previously to this problem, I had Duplicated several other documents and saved them successfully.
The problem with Numbers is isolated to the user account I was using when I force quit the application. Numbers continues to work fine on other user accounts on the same machine.
Now I'm off to try a few solutions to get Numbers working again.

  • Illustrator keeps making En_US settings and preferences folders

    Hello everyone,
I am having a problem with Illustrator CS6. I had the En_GB version installed, but somehow Illustrator keeps making En_US folders and uses those as the default. Is there a way that I can just have one language installed in my preferences and libraries, so I don't have to figure out every time where for example my user swatch libraries etc. are stored? And if I make a new 'print' document for instance, it uses millimeters instead of points, as it is in the En_GB version.
Somehow I think it might have something to do with a strange update I think occurred. The thing is: I got a message to update and then it seemed it was reinstalling the whole Illustrator application. I don't have the cloud subscription yet, but somehow it looked like that update had something to do with that. Does this ring a bell with anyone?
I can remove the En_US folders, but whenever I start up Illustrator they magically appear again.
Hope you can help me figure this out!
    Marinka

en_US and en_GB folders are dependent on the Language you install the software.
If you install the software in English (Universal) then en_US folder gets created, when in English (International) then en_GB gets created and when with Japan then en_JP folder gets created.
It is not dependent on the preferences or setting in Illustrator.
I think that was Mylenium trying to point in the first reply.
Have you uninstalled or re-installed the Illustartor , also did you know in what language did you installed the software ?

  • Keep iTunes folder organized: only iTunes folder?

If I check the option "Keep iTunes folder organized" will it only organize the folder specified above this setting (the location of the iTunes Music folder), or will it also organize everything else? Such as the music I imported from other directories.
      Windows XP

See my answer in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8228727&#8228727
The check box has not effect on tracks purchased from the store or ripped from CD using iTunes. iTunes organises them anyway.
It really matters if you have a music folder which you have organised yourself and you want to make it your iTunes music folder and you want to keep that structure.
If you add a track to your library that is not in the iTunes Music folder with the "Copy to ..." box unchecked, iTunes will store a link to the file.
If the "Copy to..." box is checked, iTunes copies the file into the iTunes music folder, leaving the original intact.

  • How do you stop Mountain Lion from making endless copies and backups of everything?!

I already have a similar topic on this when I needed to figure out how to stop Mountain Lion from making endless copies of my text edit files and I was going to try the disabling of it that someone in that thread suggested, but I can't find where the Versions backups are being stored.
Anyway, tonight I cam across a new problem, when I went into "about this Mac" and looked at my Storage, I had almost 1gb of data in the "backups" section. I just happened to have Finder open when I went into the Time Machine in the status bar and when it entered Time Machine, I had dozens of copies of my desktop. Thing is, I don't have my Time Machine hard drive connected and I don't have a Time Capsule router/hard drive. And don't give me this garbage about how "It's not real backups, it's just a snapshot" or whatever, because the ONLY things that I have stored on my computer that I have altered since I got mountain lion is two Text Edit files and the Finder Desktop (and yes, I have checked almost all the programs I use, and of the things that Time Machine will open in, those are the only things that have backups listed that I can access) and almost 1gb is being taken up completely needlessly with the computer backing up things onto itself. Obviously these are more than just snapshots and are obviously the real files because after throwing EVERYTHING on my desktop into a file, that file is only 3.8mb in size, so that almost 1GB in backups is coming from SOMEWHERE.
The solution I aluded to in my first sentence also depends on going into the Terminal to make each individual app stop auto saving Versions, however, since my desktop is being backed up, there's no program to stop Mountain Lion from doing that.
Can anyone help me figure out how to make it stop backing up? Seriously, almost 1 gb is being totally wasted on a series of desktop items that are 3.8mb in size, one Text Edit file that is 250kb in size, and another text edit file that is 41kb in size. What person in Apple would possibly have thought this endless backing up of files onto the main hard drive would have been a good idea? So in a year if I did nothing but go on the internet, save one picture to one file on my desktop and did nothing else with my computer, would I have 200 gb of desktop backups that the computer saved onto itself? Are you kidding me? OR failing that, can anyone tell me how to find this damned backup file and delete it? I'm not an idiot, I know how to plug in a hard drive or flash drive and backup my information, I don't need my computer to be making hundreds of copies of every single file on my computer that I change slightly onto itself that not only needlessly eats up it's own space, but if the hard drive died, all those "backups" would be gone too because it wrote the backups to itself.
I am so frustrated by this totally ridiculous and wasteful "feature" they put in, it does nothing but waste hard drive space with it's hundreds of copies of everything you alter slightly. And I am absolutely not starting any video editing projects until I figure out how to turn this off. If around 4mb of total text and desktop backups add up to almost 1gb in a few weeks, what the heck is a video editing project going to end up in with size? Am I the only one completely flustered by this ridiculousness? Is there any point in writing into Apple to complain or are they just going to say "No, we're brilliant, we think this is an amazing feature so you just have to deal iwth it and when your hardd drive fills up, too bad, jerk!"?? Help! Thanks!

Well as I pointed out in my post, "Sadly, my Text Edit documents are still all there, every single time I opened them and made a small change, there is another copy stretching all the way back to the day I installed Mountain Lion." so if you can explain to me how July 26 - Aug 16 is a week, I will concede that it is a good idea. Short of that, no I have been capable of making my own backups since I was 16 years old (16 years ago) I don't need my computer to endlessly do it for me in a way I am completely unable to shut off. That's what I have external hard drives, flash drives, a DVD burner, Drop Box, E-mail (as in emailing copies to myself) and icloud for. If I am doing something and I don't have access to a single one of those options, I don't know why I brought my computer with me in the first place. And I don't see how you can say it's an illusory gain in disk space, hundreds of copies of text documents, garageband files, Final Cut files, Motion Files and basically any program that makes files onto my comptuer that I can myself make incremental changes to, those all need to be stored somehow. Again, if you can explain to me how July 26 - Aug 16 is a week, I will agree with you that that is a good thing because IF it only saved for a week, it wouldn't be an issue. Sadly, no matter how many links you post, I still have text edit backups stretching from today back to July 26. They're not going away and I have no reason to beleive any other file I edit is going to go away either since they haven't been. They're all there eating up HD space and this imaginary "week" limit is simply not coming into effect. I hate it and there needs to be a simple way to simply shut it off. I didn't spend hundreds of dollars on external drives just for my main hard drive to be filled up with hundreds un useless, undeletable backups of stuff I already have backed up.

  • My mac pro keeps making a chirping cricket-like sound

My Mac Pro keeps making a chirping cricket-like sound, more and more frequently. Has anyone else had this problem? Is this telling me one of my HD is going bad?

    K_Bar wrote:
...I had them so close together that it sounded like the MacPro. Once I pulled them apart however, it was clear where the sound was coming from. Thank you all for the help!
Been there, done that. And the instructions, once I found them, seemed to list every possible communication except the chirps; I had to call tech support, which was actually a pleasant experience after dealing with Verizon.
The frequency of chirping as well as how long each chirp sequence lasts seems to be related to the line voltage. It's as if the UPS begins to worry as the line voltage goes down that it might have to actually do something with its battery.

You can't use icloud to store photos.  There's a service called photo stream which is used to sync photos from one device to another, but this can't be used to store photos permanently.
Always sync photos from a device to your computer,  Then you can delete them from the device.

My macbook wont boot up. When I turn it on, the screen turns black right away and the cd/dvd drive keeps making a constant "ejecting" sound.
The strange thing though is that once in a while starts up propperly, but suddely goes black again (after a min. or two), and the ejecting sound comes back. What to do, and yh, I've never done a back up so would it be possible to take out the HD and regain whats in there?
    Any help would be appriciated!

  • How do I change the default program setting when I download a file.  Numbers keeps opening the file intended for Quicken.

For example; Numbers keeps opening downloaded files intended for Quicken.  I can change the program to open the download, but I can't find a way to make the change be the default.

In Finder locate a file you're having trouble with, highlight the file and type Command I (I as in Ivan). In the box called Open With choose the app you want to use to open the file with. Right below that  you will see Use this apps to open all documents like this one then click the button right below that calledChange All.

You can create an App store account without a credit card, however that won't help you with updating your previous purchases. Apps are DRM protected, and tied to the account that was used to originally purchase them. There is no way to overcome this DRM protection or transfer them to another account(Itunes support can if you contact them). If you want to create an App store account without a credit card, follow the directions here, but bear in mind the DRM protection mentioned. If you use this account to download free apps, you will have to use this same account for all future updates:

  • What keeps making the cyclical noise while in sleep.  Sounds like iMac is loading a graphic or different screen.

What keeps making the cyclical noise while in sleep?  Sounds like iMac is loading a graphic or different screen.  Does it periodically while in sleep mode.  How do I correct this?  Just started doing it in the last few months.

I finally figured out how to fix this.  First I reviewed "Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep of stay in sleep mode."  I noted the bullet:  "Do you have any other external USB or Firewire devices connected?"  I have an CP685AVR for a UPS for my Mac.  I replaced the battery a few months ago.  I also hooked up Apple's 'Energy Saver' power management software to the CP685AVR using the USB connection.  I disconnected it, and that solved the problem.  I still have the UPS and battery back-up; I just can't "monitor" the battery.  What's to monitor?  It always said the battery was 100% charged even right up to the time the previous battery failed.  Thanks for listening, uh... reading.
