Numbers shortcuts

Hi there:
I'm trying to use numbers to see if I can get away with not buying Excel for Mac. I'll admit I'm new to using mac and I'm an excel superuser.
So, here is my problem.
I have a sum formula is cell D6, as shown below:

My problem is when I'm unable to select the cells like the way I can in excel.
So I use the Option + arrow keys to go up to my data points, but I cannot seem to extend my selection to the neighboring cells after I go to the data point. Lets say, I go to cell D4 with the value 12 using the Option + arrow keys, then I cannot seem to use shift_ option+ arrow to select cells C4 or D3 (neighboring cells of D4). When I use the shift_ option+ arrow, it selects cells next to formula i.e C6 and not next to the data point i.e D4. I'm use to totally using the keyboard to write excel formulas, does numbers expect me to use the mouse to drag the after going to the data point D4?
What am I doing incorrectly?
In excel, I'd use the shift keys to go up to my data and then us Shift + control + arrow keys to select the cells next to it.

As you know, I never use PC products.
So the keyboards which I know are Apple ones.
If I remember well, on US keyboards you have _option ⌥_ key .
In Europe we had these keyboards for years but since about six years the Apple keyboards have no longer this key but a _alt ⌥_ one.
So, for European users reading a question about _Alt key_ doesn't send us on the bad old PC track

Numbers shortcut opens in Preview at times

I had seen some thing discussed previously, but not being a computer programming expert I could not seem to understand what I needed to do to fix the problem.
Along with the dilling comments back about what was being asked I will advise the problem as follows.
I use a Numbers file daily and created a short-cut to the desktop to make opening the file easier.
The file is updated at least twice a day.
Now previously there had not being a problem but following another fault to my Macbook Pro (Number 4) I this time needed a new harddrive and it seems the store screwed up the Operating system and it was not the same as the previous one I had (but that is anopther story).
Since then, from time to time only, on several occassions when opening the shortcut on the desk top it opens with PREVIEW rather than NUMBERS.
I have been able to change the software to open with by right clicking the shortcut and changing the setting to dermine what application it should open with, but this is annoying me as I should not need to.
A previous question on this answered about deleting a file, but I could not find that and then tried using another option using the TERMINAL application, but when I copied what was on the suggestions it threw up an error which I think is due the need to change some details in what I copied but was not explained.
Maybe the better option is for me to forget NUMBERS and purchasing EXCEL or a new Windows based Laptop becuase I have never had these problems with previous computers which I have been blighted with since swapping to Apple.
Please advise what I can do to solve this.

Sounds like a corrupted plist (preferences) file.
Quit Numbers, then do the following:
The file indicated in the discussion linked in Ian's post is: com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
You'll find it at:
Macintosh HD > Users > yourusername > Library > Preferences > com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
With versions of OS X after 10.6, the User Library is hidden. To get to your Library, start in Finder.
Go to the Go menu, press and hold the option key, and select Library. Double click Preferences, then locate and select com.apple.LaunchServices.plist and drag that file to either the Desktop or the Trash.
Then try double-clickig a .numbers file.

Registered numbers problem

I register new tel no. in skype to go. Then I make international call - works well.
Then I try another call, but cant connect to my acces number. Voice message "Połączenie nie może być zrealizowane". Happens every time. I did try many intervals (minutes and hours).
So I remove this registered number, add it again and I can make 1 single call again. If I try one more time: the problem comes back.
Same happens if I add new number and try calling after some time (2-3 day) - cant get through to acces number.
Acces number: in Poland, Warsaw (22)
My mobile: Orange
Happens: always.
Its realy frustrating. Any ideas?

Ted,
You don't have to remove the older version from your computer, but you should make sure you know which one you are using, and use the newer one for most things. Quit Numbers. If you have a Numbers shortcut icon on your Dock, use it to start Numbers. Then choose Numbers > About Numbers and see which one you are using. If it's Numbers 08, the first version, quit it and drag the shortcut icon off your Dock.
Now use Finder to browse your Applications folder for iWork 09. In that folder, find Numbers and launch from there. Check to make sure you have started Numbers 09. Then right-click the icon on the Dock and choose to keep that icon on the Dock.
You should be good from there on.

9. The setting to get 16:9 ratio is yes, software, but you also have to consider the sensor hardware. The sensor hardware is able to receive light in the same ratio as the pictures, and not in 16:9 ratio. Hardware cannot be adjusted. You yourself said you work with an SLR camera, and if you look through the viewfinder, you see that the camera lens sees the view in a "square" ratio as well like the phone. Creating software to render a picture in 16:9 ratio is just simply creating software that cuts off the reception of light in the top and bottom part of the picture so as to create a 16:9 effect. Meaning the camera is not utilizing the full 3.2 megapixels of the phone, and the result is just the same as getting the picture you took and editing it on your PC to show a 16:9 ratio.

Removing character styling in CC?

Wondering if there if there is a shortcut buried anywhere in InDesign CC that allows character styling to be removed?
As an example:
I might currently select a word in a paragraph and apply a pre-made italic character style (usually using a numbered shortcut, eg keypad 1 on right side of my keyboard applies italic version of my body font).
If I subsequently change my mind and want that word back into Roman, I (slightly laboriously) select the same word and then call up the character styling palatte and then click '[None]' at the top of that palette.
It would be nice just to play a keyboard shortcut that does the same (ie, take off any character styling applied to that individual word).
I thought I had found it within the CC keyboard shortcut sets under Edit > Keyboard shortcuts > (Product area) Text and tables > Clear Character Overrides but it doesn't seem to work.
It's not a major thing and I'm probably just being a bit dim but any help appreciated

Is there a keyboard shortcut to open a pop-up menu in Numbers 3?

I have lots of spreadsheets with cells formatted as popup menus. I am accustomed to tabbing from cell to cell, and then tapping the spacebar to open the pop-up menu to select an option. Now it appaers that the only way to open a pop-up menu in Numbers 3 is to take my hand off the keyboard, mouse to the arrow button near the cell, click it, and then select an option. This is ridiculous. Has the shortcut changed, or is it just gone?

This is an old thread. Hitting the spacebar of course worked in Numbers 2, as noted in the thread to which you link.
But it didn't trigger the Pop-Up Menu in the first releases of Numbers 3. The spacebar trigger has been restored quite recently, I think in the April release of Numbers 3.2.
In general Pop-ups are much improved in Numbers 3 over Numbers 2.

What is the keyboard shortcut to move to the next sheet in Numbers.

What is the keyboard shortcut on a Macbook Pro to move to the next sheet in the Numbers application. Based on my search of the internet, I have tried fn+command+arrow up, and it does not work. I have tried every other combo I could think of or that was suggested on the internet, but to no avail. Is there a keyboard shortcut if just using the keyboard of a MacBook Pro?

There use to be a shortcut key, but I think they killed it with the last update. I haven't been able to find one that works. Hopefully someone here can settle this.

Why won't Numbers save my character styles shortcuts?

I like to keep all my character styles shortcuts thru all my projects yet Numbers won't save them thru restarts or quits but it used to. Any help appreciated

when I open spreadsheet attachment, only option is in lower right hand corner-- a box with arrow. When I touch this icon it gives me a choice to open in Safari or Cancel. No white dots.
PLs be really basic with your response to me. I thought I am pretty computer literate but this has be baffled.

How do I create custom keyboard shortcut to merge cells in Numbers? The instructions on the support site say to open Keyboard in preferences then click the +. I don't see a plus anywhere. On any menu.

The Merge Cell command does not have a keyboard short cut. You can, however, add one to your user space as follows:
Open System Preferences, then select the keyboard panel:
On the left click the "Application Shortcut" then on the right select Numbers. now click the "+"
Now enter the exact name of the menu item "Merge Cells" (by looking up the name of the menu item in the menus of Numbers), then selec the "Keyboard Shortcut" field and type the exact key combination you want to use. Be sure it is unique from other Numbers key combination.

OK, I've been doing this since CS2 with no need for a script. To hide guides and show preview...
1) Go to 'Keyboard Shortcuts'
2) Go to 'Product Area - Tools'. Yes, you'd think it would be in Views! But the buttons for this is at the bottom of the Tool Bar.
3) Go to 'Commands: Toggle view setting between default and preview'
4) Click your cursor inside 'New Shortcut' and hit the key you want or type it in. I choose the unused F2 key
5) Click the 'Assign' button and you are set. Hit the key to switch back and forth.
As for your mouse Zoom, use Power Zoom as described above or just hold down the Alt/Option button in 'Hand' mode and use the scroll wheel to zoom in and out. Not one step but it works!
Now you won't miss Quark at all!

Nokia E6: Shortcut key to emergency numbers

Hi, I had received a letter of advice (you can call it a letter of warning) from the local authority on nuisance calls made to the local emergency hotline. There had been a few instances of this issue happening, and I would like to find out if there is a shortcut key. I had the latest happened to me again yesterday and I think the local authority will be writing to me again very soon. I would like to do either of the following:- 1. Change the local emergency number to a invalid entry so that it shows up an error whenever I try to call. 2. Disable the emergency call totally 3. [last resort] get local mobile service provider to bar all emergency calls made from my phone Can anyone advise how 1 and 2 is to be done? Am not sure if the local mobile service provider will bar emergency calls... I appreciate any advice that you may have for me. Thank you.

Most phones will dial 911 and 112 even if your keyboard is locked.
The 1 to 9 numbers of the keypad can be programmed to dial a number if you press and hold one of them.
If you try to mantain your keyboard locked and inside a case instead of the pocked there should not be unintentional calls.

What is the shortcut to insert rows in Numbers?

I know I can use the arrow on the row number to insert rows, but I need to insert a bunch of rows. What is the keyboard shortcut to insert rows? I don't understand what the screen tip says is the shortcut. Thanks for your help

The keyboard shortcut for Add Row(s) is option-arrow, where 'arrow' is one of the four arrow keys.
To add one row above the current row:
Select any cell in the current row.
Press option-up arrow.
To add four rows:
Select a stack of four cells, ending with the one after which you want the new rows inserted:
Press option-down arrow:
Done.
As you've probably guessed, using the left or right arrow (with option) inserts column(s) left or right of the selected cell(s).
This was done in Numbers '09, a Mac application. I don't know if this process is supported on Numbers iCloud.

Custom keyboard shortcut not working in Numbers '09

I wanted to create a shortcut for merging cells. I added the shortcut (option-N) to the system preferences like the other posts on this site have suggested. It shows up in Numbers immediately. I try to use the shortcut and all I get is a "beep." I check the drop down list under "Table" and I can clearly see "Merge Cells" and my newly created shortcut. I can click on THAT and it merges the cells. But my shortcut won't work.
Sup with that?

For anyone still having this problem, I tried the same thing with the merge cells and it was making the noise as well. I tried to do option-m and it wouldn't work, then I tried option-command-m and it worked! I think it maybe that command had another task assigned to it so it couldn't process both. Try a different command and maybe it will work. Also, it worked with I would click on the task bar at the top, and then push option-m, very strange.

Numbers ignores previously defined custom keyboard shortcut

I used the System Preferences->Keyboard to set a keyboard shortcut for Numbers. I defined ^; to insert the current date: "Date & Time". It worked fine, until the next time I started Numbers. The short cut was shown in the menu, but it would not respond to the keyboard. I went back the to the Keyboard Preferences and set it again, while Numbers was running, and it worked. I repeated a few different ways, essentially I have to redefine the Keyboard shortcut after each time that I start Numbers, even though the menu shows the appropriate shortcut. Is this a known bug or do I have another problem?
