Numbers spreadsheet won't sort

why is numbers sorting arrows suddenly greyed out and share>email is also greyed out.

"The sort arrows are the ones at the top of the column that show up when you hover over the column heading row.they allow you to sort ascending or descending ."
Considering the menu they disclose contains several options besides sort ascending and sort descending, I'd consider 'sort arrows' too limiting a name for them.
They're closer in function to disclosure triangles, which disclose hidden features when clicked, in this case the hidden menu attached to the reference tab.

Barry
PS Sorry about missing mentioning the fact that split (or merged) cells prevent sorting a table. Slipped my mind.

Numbers spreadsheets won't update to iCloud from iPad2. Anyone know the solution to this problem?

I have upgraded my Ipad to IOS 6 and now I cannot open my spreadsheet on Numbers. This is very annoying as my last back-up of this spreadsheet is rather old. I would appreciate any advice. I tried to email the spreadsheet and I also tried to open it in iCloud - can't do anything there either.

  • Numbers spreadsheet won't print in correctly in landscape from iCloud

I have a Numbers spreadsheet that needs to be printed in landscape to get all the columns to show. Doing this directly in Numbers works as expected and all columns show correctly. However, after it is shared onto iCloud and you attempt to print from there, selecting Landscape flips both the paper and text on the side basically giving the same result as Portrait. Can anyone else confirm this?
    Thank you.

  • Numbers - Spreadsheet won't open

As of today when I sign into icloud.com and try and open my numbers spreadsheets - the files names are full of funny symbols and when I try and open I get told I do not have permission to open.

  • Why won't some of my numbers spreadsheets from my iPad open with iCloud on my Mac (Yosemite)?

Why won't some of my numbers spreadsheets from my iPad open with iCloud on my Mac (Yosemite)? When I look at the files in FiNader there's a grey bar next to the files that won't open.

I am having the same problem. Created new spreadsheet on iPad with fresh iOS and Numbers installs (3/2015) and am unable to open this spreadsheet in iCloud in Safari on MacBook Air (all current). I get the following message:
    "Sorry, something went wrong.
This spreadsheet can't be opened right now. Please try again later."
Tried reopening on Mac from iCloud and resaving; still cannot open.
Quick fix: Copying the spreadsheet content from the iPad spreadsheet to one created on the desktop recovers the ability to open it in iCloud in Safari.
    Thanks.

  • I can't open my numbers spreadsheet on my Mac, from iCloud

I save my numbers spreadsheets to icloud as I need to access them on the go.
Now that I have turned my Mac off and back on, I can't access any of my numbers spreadsheets from icloud.
When I try to open one I get an error message that says "You need a newer version of Numbers to open this spreadsheet."
    I have the latest version.
This happened a few weeks ago, and was eventually sorted when another update came through for numbers for my Mac.
But this time I waited for the updated to catch up with Australia, but I still can't open them.
I can however access then by sharing the document via icloud, but I can't use it in numbers on my Mac, and I cant save it to my Mac.
    Does anyone have any tips?

It sounds like you may have mre than one version of Numbers installed on your Mac. and that the older one is attempting to open these files.
If you were previously using Numbers '09, and upgraded to Numbers 3, the older version will still be on the Mac, enclosed in a folder named iWork '09, found in your Applications folder.
Numbers 3 will also be in the Applications folder, but not enclosed in another folder.
The two versions have different feature sets, and I would caution against removing the earlier version before ensuring that any features you have been using and that you need are supported in Numbers 3. Both versions can coexist on the same machine (and according to reports, can both be running at the same time).
To ensure that you are launching the newer version, make sure you have it's icon on the Dock, and that you use that icon to start the launch. The icons for the two versions are similar—both are vertical bar graphs in 3D format. The difference is in the number of bars—three for Numbers '09 and four for Numbers 3. Once you ahve launched the needed version, use File > Open (or File > Recent items) to locte and open the file.

  • Cannot Open Numbers Spreadsheet (Numbers on iPhone)

I have a spreadsheet that I created and regularly update on my iPhone using Numbers.
I recently upgraded to version 1.5 of the Numbers app. Since then, one of my spreadsheets won't open - tapping on the file displays the progress wheel for a second and then nothing. The spreadsheet in question is 2.3Mb and contains a large number of formulae. All of my other spreadsheets are unaffected. When I try to send it to email / iTunes, etc. I see the message 'Send "(null)" to iTunes as:'. When I tap "Numbers", the screen displays a progress bar and "Sending...", but doesn't progress any further.
I used an application to recover the spreadsheet from the iTunes backup (http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4974), renamed the resulting .numbers-tef filename as .numbers, but when I attempt to open the document in Numbers on my Mac, I receive the message 'The index.xml file is missing.'.
I also cannot import the retrieved file to my iPhone. After uploading the recovered document via iDisk and attempting to import on my iPhone, I receive the message 'Spreadsheet couldn't be imported. Numbers only supports documents saved with iWork '09.'
I opened the .numbers package and examined the index.db file and can see that it contains my data, but just can't figure out how to either:
    get it on to my iPhone;
open it in Numbers on my mac.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

I received a message from the Apple team asking for a copy of the files I extracted. I have yet to hear back from them.
I did download and install the latest version of Numbers for iPhone - 1.6. The spreadsheet that I was having all the trouble with - that I had left on my iPhone -  opened after a short delay and none of my data was lost.
I was also able to email the spreadsheet to myself and transfer it to iTunes without issue.
    Problem solved!

  • How may i place a Numbers spreadsheet in an InDesign document?

How may i place a Numbers spreadsheet in an InDesign document?
    It's possible?

    Hi.
You can import a .xls file.
First, go to Preferences > File handling > check "Create links ... spreadsheet files" in order to be able to update your table when modified in Excel.
Note that you won't be able to get any formatting from Excel file, so you should create a custom table style, along with paragraph and character styles.
While importing your Excel file, check "import options", select "Unformatted Table", and apply your table style.
Of course, no dynamic math operation can be make within InDesign Table, you must do it in your source file, then resave it and update your link.
If you properly used cells, paragraphs and characters styles, the formatting will be preserved when updating link to the spreadsheet.
Don't forget your .xls file is now linked to your indesign file (just like a picture), so don't move or delete it without caution...

  • Can I link a pages table to numbers spreadsheet ?

I would like a table in Pages to display current data from a numbers spreadsheet.
Is this possible in Pages and Numbers ?
I do NOT mean copy and paste etc. which does not accomplish what I need.
    Any information gratefully received
This has been possible in several applications for a looooong looooong time.
If I remember rightly Wingz could do this sort of linking 20 years ago.  i.e link data in one document to data in another.

Sorry for that oversight.  I am currently using iWork 08 and skipped 09 because I have gone from Snow Leopard to Mavericks.
A transition I am not altogether happy with .  Not at all impressed by Mavericks so far.
Apple Help promised me a lot would be fixed or restored in Yosemite..... not holding breath.
I am thinking Mavericks is a code for back to the days of the old west since so much seems to have been abandoned...

  • Can't open older Numbers spreadsheet

Bought a new Macbook Pro.  Now trying to open an old numbers spreadsheet and it's telling me "This spreadsheet can’t be opened because it’s too old. To open it save it in Numbers '09 first'  The new Macbook Pro is showing version '08.  How do I open this older version?

    Hi warmbeaches,
What version of OS X are you running? Apple menu > About This Mac
**Do not delete Numbers '08, Numbers '09 or Numbers 3 if they are on your machine! **
    You might need them!
All versions will run happily together.
Try App Store to update all versions of Numbers (Numbers '08, Numbers '09 or Numbers 3) to the versions that will work on your current OS X. Previous releases will not be replaced. They will be moved to a sub-folder within your Applications folder. They won't disappear.
Have a look here at this User Tip by Wayne:
Need newer version of Numbers to open file
Numbers 3 (if you have that on your new machine) will not (and can not) open a Numbers '08 document.
Be sure which version of Numbers is trying to open a document.
In Finder, Right Click (or control click) and Open With

  • Numbers v. Excel - Sort capabilities

I have a complex Excel spreadsheet that I have developed over many years to handle my accounting needs.
I would love to walk away from MS Office and use iWork exclusively. I have figured out how to convert my Excel monster to a working numbers spreadsheet, but I am encountering a "deal breaker".
Numbers cannot handle the database! I have tried simply importing the Excel worksheet and I have tried creating a new worksheet in Numbers and doing a copy/paste on just the data from Excel - just 617 lines of data at this point in the year.
Numbers cannot sort the data base - it hangs every time and I wind up using a force quit on Numbers. Excel 2004 handles the same data on a three deep sort in less than a second.
What is going on here? Is Numbers just still too weak - 'not ready for prime time' - that it cannot handle a database of more than 100 lines? I am a bit disappointed and wondering if anyone here can confirm what I suspect or give me some kind of brilliant solution.
    Thanks for any feedback. (jk)

    Yvan,
Thank you for sharing. I actually copied your use of the OFFSET command when I first bought Numbers and began the attempt to convert from Excel.
My spreadsheet includes eight different accounts so I added an IF command to apply the debits and credits to the correct accounts (columns). You are correct, with three to 20 lines of data, it works just fine.
In real life, the data runs to over 1,000 lines and Numbers "hangs" when attempting to sort the data for statement reconciliation or tax preparation.
As Jerrold Green noted above, I might be able to "go out to lunch or leave it overnight" to complete the sort, but that delay makes Numbers unusable for me. (As noted above, I have - grudingly - reverted to Excel which sorts properly and quickly.)
So - I guess we are both correct - Numbers will work properly if the formulas are written properly but the Sort function is so slow with real life data as to be unusable - for me.
BTW - I am marking your answer Helpful because you are correct about the use of the OFFSET command and I thank you for that. Maybe I will be able to use in in iWork 10 when they figure out the Sort algorithm.
