Numbers will not open

Please can you assist.
I cannot reopen Numbers on my Mac.
Tried reloading, restarting - but still get the error message  and no joy....help

You should use at least Numbers 2.0.4. You can use 2.1 but it doesn't have any benefit for Snow Leopard over 2.0.4. If you're not running the latest versions of the iWork apps installed from a retail box or the downloaded trial & Software Update says your software is up to date, make sure the applications are where the installer initially put them. The updaters are very picky. If the location is not where the updater is programmed to look or if the folder doesn't have the name the updater looks for, it will not work. The applications cannot be renamed or moved. If you installed from the downloaded trial or the retail box, they must be in the iWork '09 folder in Applications. That iWork folder must be named iWork '09. If it doesn't have the '09 Software Update won't find them & the updaters won't work.

  • Iwork numbers will not open

iwork numbers will not open, despite reinstalling the software. Pages & Keynote work fine. Any Ideas?

For Lion 10.7.5: Restart holding down Command R. Click on Disk Utility. Select your HD. Select Repair Disk Permissions.
    I haven't had any problems in a long time. I'm running Pages 4.2 & Numbers 2.2.
I don't think there's usually any need to repair permissions with Lion. There were probably some software updates that fixed the problem. I find it helps to shut the computer down at night instead of just putting it to sleep. This has eliminated some freezes I was having with both newer and older computers.

  • Numbers will not open older files

I have Numbers '09 installed on my MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion OS. Recently I went through using Migration Assistant to move apps, adat etc., to a new MBPro 13. After this I have found that Numbers will not open many of the numbers files on either the old or the new machine--the problem probably existed before the migration but I had not had to access these files for quite a while. The message I get is simply "Numbers cannot open this file" I can see the contents in Preview and I was able to use a 3rd party service to get it converted into a .cvs file and thence to Excel. Numbers will open and create new numbers files seemingly OK. I have run repair permissions but no change.
I have seen a history of a similar problem from some time ago so I don't know if this is an old problem that has just surfaced on my machine or what.

    Hi,
have you update it to the new version of numbers?
If not go to the App Store and click on Update.
The update process will fix the issue and will give you the new features.
    Hope this helps.

Please back up all data, then open the iCloud pane in System Preferences. If the box marked iCloud Drive is checked, click the Options... button on the same line. In the sheet that drops down, there should be a box marked with the name of the affected app. Uncheck that box and confirm. Your iCloud documents should be preserved.
Check the box again and test.

  • HELP......  spreadsheet will not open in Numbers

I have used numbers for years and today when I try to open a spreadsheet that was created a couple of years ago, it will not open.  It just opened two days ago....  Does anyone know what is going on with Numbers?  I am operating maverick and my numbers version is 3.01.   Please help!

That's the usual cause. The document could have been corrupted by who-knows-what. Do you have a Time Machine backup? You might find a good copy of the document there, maybe with the last update missing.
Also, try Open With: Preview in Finder. If it opens in Preview you can see the contents and have some hope of recovery, even if only manually.

  • Macbook numbers 2.1(436) will not open the project from Numbers APP on iPad 2.1(1129) .  The error is "index.html is missing"

I updated the numbers APP on my iPad to 2.1(1129) and my Macbook numbers 2.1(436) will not open the project.  The error is "index.html is missing".
I think I am having compatibility issues also with my numbers files but the symptom started last week. I have a numbers project/file that has been shared between my iPad and Macbook for several months so I would believe there is no compatability issue with the content.  I updated the Numbers APP on my iPad to 2.1(1129) and my Macbook (numbers is current) on 2.1(436) will not open it. I used email the iTunes to transfer the project file. The error is "index.html is missing".
I used ftp to get both a previous file that will open and the new one that will not open onto a server at work and unzipped them. The file format is very different. Indeed the old one has an index.html and the new one has an index directory with a set of files. I know that you can not believe everything you read online but I did see a blurb that Numbers 3 does not need the index.html file but has no other specifics on the files format.
Am I a victim of the 2.1 verson on my iPad not being compatable with the 2.1 version on my Macbook?
Am I now forced to buy a new iWorks or Numbers 3 becasue I updated the iPad APP?
I wanted to find the answer before I purchased a new Numbers if that was not the problem.

Thank you for the insight that the new iPad 2.1 version requires Numbers3 BUT that is not a conclusion I would have jumped to being both are 2.1? Go figure.
You however I do not believe you are correct with the conclusion that I can get a Numbers upgrade. I am on OS X 10.6.8 so not only do I need a new OS, I need a new macbok to run it, according to the APP store it requires OS X 10.9 or greater.
I would like to have known that Numbers 2.1 iOS is not compatable with numbers 2.1 OS X and not taken the APP update.

  • Numbers Files will not open...just hang...

    Help!!
My hard drive on my MacBook crashed. I backed up all of my information daily on both a USB and external hard drive.
I transfered all the data to my PowerBook. I updated it with all the same systems as the MacBook.
I put together very sophisticated financial analyses on Numbers on my MacBook and now the ones that are larger than 600KB will not open on my PowerBook. I just get the Progress window with the blue bar about 85% across, the spinning ball and in Force Quit (Numbers not Responding).
I have emptied the caches in my home folder; I have removed the :plist in the library file for numbers; I have corrected permissions; I even re-installed iWorks - it is Numbers 1.0.2
All I want to do is one time open these files and save as Excel b/c I have done this on the smaller ones, with no problems.
These spreadsheets are the basis of a project I am working on which I cannot spend the next 2 months trying to replicate - they are for my investor package which goes out in one week!!!
I'm desperate - Apple Care has no clue; there is no expert for iWorks or Numbers...
    Can someone please help me????

    Hello
I'm afraid that your files are really corrupted.
My guess is that due to you original HD failure, the backups themselves where bad copies.
    First thing to do:
ctrl + click on the icon of one of these documents.
In the contextual menu which will appear, select "show package contents.
You will get a folder window containing at least a folder named "Contents" and a file named "Index.xml.gz"
    Try to double-click this file.
Normally, it will expand as "Index.xml"
Try to open it with TextEdit (add temporarily the ".txt" extension to its name to do that)
If it open flawlessly, I assumes that the embedded xml code is wrongly formed and I'm afraid that at this time it isn't recoverable.
I already sent to Apple a report with a sample document with this kind of behavior.
I asked them to do their best trying to revive the document but I have no news.
