Numeric keypad in gnome-terminal

Hi all,
I'm experiencing issues with the numeric keypad in gnome-terminal.
When the NumLock is on, the terminal recognizes only keys for 2, 4, 5, 6 and 8.
All other keys for numbers maintain their special meaning, e.g., Page Up, as if the NumLock was not on.
Numeric keypad works just fine in other JDS applications.
I'm working with JDS, Release 3 that is bundles with Solaris 10 1/06 for SPARC (GNOME2 6.1). This used to function properly for older version of GNOME 2 that was bundled with Solaris 9.
Is this a known bug or am I missing some configuration?
Thanks in advance,
Maciej

There are no special keybindings defined for the numeric keypad in the preferences.
I'm using PC keyboard through VNC. VNC viewer passes all special keys directly to the X server.
The system is up-to-date on all GNOME patches.

  • Odd result using numeric keypad in vi

    Oracle Linux 5.6, x86-64
This may not be considered a Linux question, per se, but is close enough I'd expect someone here knows the answer.
When I am editing a file in vi, if I use the numeric keypad to enter numbers, instead of the number, I get a letter followed by a line feed.
Input of numeric keypad follows. I will be hitting, in sequence, 1, 2, 3, 4:
    t
    s
    r
    q
Actually, the 'q' was the result of pressing '1'.  Each successive number generated a line feed (pushing the previous entry down), followed by the letter you see.  To clarify
Input of numeric keypad follows. I will be hitting, in sequence, 1, 2, 3, 4:
t   < pressing '4' on the keypad, the 's' was pushed down and this 't' was entered.
s   < pressing '3' on the keypad, the 'r' was pushed down and this 's' was entered.
r   < pressing '2' on the keypad, the 'q' was pushed down and this 'r' was entered.
q   < after typing the opening line and 'enter' , I pressed '1' on the keypad, and got this 'q'
Using the numbers on the top row (above 'qwerty') behaves as one would expect. It's only when I try to use the numeric keypad do I get the above.

Linux supports hundreds of keyboard layouts; you must identify yours with a line similar to:
    $ export TERM=vt100
    $ reset
or whatever type terminal or emulator you are using.
So, er, did you have NUMLOCK on?

  • X11 gedit xterm numeric keypad stuck in numeric mode

Ok I tried googling and i tried searching this forum and if the answer is here I'm staring at it without seeing it.
I've got two PC's in this room, one running arch linux the other running centos 5.
Both run gnome and both have the same keyboard definition in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier  "Keyboard0"
        Driver      "keyboard"
        Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
        Option "XkbLayout" "uk"
        Option "XkbVariant" ""
    EndSection
On the centos system editors like gedit recognise my num lock key and allow me to choose whether "numeric keypad 1" types a '1' or goes to the end of the line. On the arch system I have no such luck numeric keypad 1 ALWAYS types a 1 never mind whether the num lock light is on or not. And here's the best bit. Both machines are plugged into a belkin KVM switch so it's the same physical keyboard !!
OK I know there must be a config setting somewhere. Can someone put me out of my misery please !

  • Shouldn't Spaces numbers and position be same as on numeric keypad?

    Hi,
I think Spaces is flipped upside-down. I think if you hit #1 on your numeric keypad you should get Spaces #1 in the lower left position. Instead you get Spaces #7.
Does anyone know of a program that can change this? If not, a script or a terminal command?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Thanks for that! This is all about personal preference, and, given the choice, I'd love to remap my computers keypad, and put stickers on it, or whatever. I never understood why there were 2 different layouts to begin with, but know that the calculator keypad layout is ancient compared to the push-button telephone, which came out in 1959. So, if you polled 'baby boomers', (among those who weren't accountants or early adopters of computers), I'm sure most prefer the telephone layout.
Ironic that the program that remaps your keyboard, "Ukelele" is misspelled.
I'm sure they did this on purpose. this is not a kind of thing you do by accident.
The word is Ukulele, and is Hawaiian for "dancing flea".
    Thanks for the Ukelele!
    you are welcome!

but this will affect everything, not just spaces. do you really want that? and the numeric keypad keys will not agree with what's written on them. I suppose you put some stickers over them but still...

  • No scrolling when viewing man pages with Gnome terminal?

    Hi all,
I have just installed Oracle Solaris 11 on x86. For a long time I've used Solaris 9 on SPARC. I like the new OS, but I'm having a problem viewing man pages with Gnome terminal. When I view a long man page, e.g., "man newfs", I don't get a functional scroll bar on the right hand side of the window. And although the space bar works to advance the page, when I reach the end, it doesn't return to the command prompt. It just beeps, prints "END", and I can only exit by closing the window. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Chris Tidy

It does sound like you're using "less" instead of more. When you see the "(END)" prompt you can simply type "q" and it will exit back to the command line prompt making it unnecessary to close the window. See the "less" manual page for more detail on the less command. Under Solaris 9 the paging was done with the "more" command. If you set the PAGER environment variiable to "more" the man page will use more and revert to the behavior you'd be used to with Solaris 9. Less erases the text you've already read when you type that final "q" which is a behavior I don't like. I didn't bother to determine if there is a way to fix that with less, I just went back to more. The choice between "more" and "less" is a personal preference.

  • Lost numerical keypad function

During the middle of a long photo editing session the num lock light went out and the numeric keypad ceased to function. Pushing num lock didn't change anything. Removed all other USB devices, tried all the USB ports, restarted, reinstalled OS. Nothing worked. Replaced keyboard with new one and repeated all of the above. Still nothing. Any suggestions?

    Are "mouse keys" on?
    Try this:
System Preferences - Universal Access - "Mouse" tab - mouse keys: off

  • [SOLVED] Gnome 3.12 : gnome terminal does not run anymore

I had the following message when trying to run gnome-terminal after updating to 3.12:
Error creating terminal: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)
I have found a fix, so I'll share it with the community. The problem was that I had vte3-mosh-fix installed from the aur, version 0.34.9 and that gnome-terminal now requires vte3 0.36.0.
Switching to the official vte3 package fixes the issue.

Thank you for posting the solution.  I would have never even remembered that I had installed that mosh fix, let alone thought to remove it.

  • Using Numeric Keypad In Oracle Forms 6i

    Dear All,
I am facing some problems when I am Working with Numeric Keypad on Oracle Forms 6i.
I have 10 Buttons and In Every Button Property I have defined the "Access Key".
    e.g
    Buttons | Property   | Value
    Button1 | Access Key | "1"
    Button2 | Access Key | "2"
    Button3 | Access Key | "3"
    Button4 | Access Key | "4"
    Button5 | Access Key | "5"
    Button6 | Access Key | "6"
    Button7 | Access Key | "7"
    Button8 | Access Key | "8"
    Button9 | Access Key | "9"
Button0 | Access Key | "0"Example : When I will Press Only "1" Using Numeric Keypad, Message Window will appear with the Message "You have Pressed 1..."
All Buttons are functioning Properly when I Pressing (One Key Stroke) 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0 using Numeric KeyPad.
    But I am not able to apply this Technique on "*" , "/" , "-" , "+" , "." , "Num Lock".
How Can I utilize these Characters(*,-,+,/,NumLock) in my application to perform a certain task using Single Key Stroke through Buttons or any other way in Oracle Forms 6i.
Note : We don't want to give Keyboard / Mouse to User. We have given a Numeric KeyPad to the User for a Certain Task.
    Thanks in Advance

It works for me on 10g but the only pitfall is the " * ", the workaround is to use the " & " in the label next to the key you want.
    for example:
    Button*   label &*
    Button-   label   &-
    Button/   label   &/
    Button+   label   &+
    Button.   label   &.Try it

  • Display flashes white when I hit 0 on numeric keypad...why?

    Using Logic Pro 9...
When I hit the 0 (zero) key on the numeric keypad as a transport control alternative, the entire display flashes white, and Logic does not respond as it should when 0 is pressed.
I thought maybe this was an accessibility option, but in "System Preferences > Universal Access > Hearing" I see that "Flash the screen when an alert sound occurs" is not checked.
Also, hitting the other number keys causes the Logic window to get hidden for a brief moment.
    Any ideas?
    -Allan

Being a new Logic user, it's a pleasure to be able to help someone here!
In 9.0.1 Apple changed the behavior of unmapped keyboard commands. In 9.0 you'd hear the Apple 'donk' sound when you hit an unmapped key; in the latest version you now get a flashing screen.
As for your other question, it's because those keys are assigned to changing Screensets. You might want to Google that one - one of Logic's nifty workflow features.

  • Update jtable cell via numeric keypad

    Hi,
I have a problem, trying to figure out how to input numbers in a jtextfield in a jtable cell, from a group of jbuttons (rendered as a numeric keypad). I can get the cell to focus, but when I click on one of the jbuttons in the keypad, the cell loses focus and nothing is printed. I can update the cell by directly typing from the keyboard; that works fine. But I'm lost when trying to do it from the touch-screen keypad. Can anyone point me in the right direction. I assume I need to attach additional listeners somewhere.
    Thanks in-advance.
    Lee

I can get the cell to focus, Then the code for you button would need to be something like:
    String text = (String)table.getValueAt(...);
    String updated = text + button.getText();
    table.setValueAt(updated, ...);

  • Engaging the Numeric Keypad

Hi, would someone please tell me how to engage the numeric keypad when running Quicken in Windows on an iMac? Thanks.

Does the keypad work properly in other places?
If not, press the Option key 5 times. You should then hear a short series of clicks, and it should work properly. See System Preferences > Universal Access > Mouse for details.

  • Introduce a keyboard with built in numeric keypad option on the W500 Lenovo!!

Ok, so this is not so much of a question as suggestion to Lenovo and call for any who think its a good idea to ad your support in appealing to Lenovo to offer it.
There are a number of competitors out there who make 15.x inch laptops and provide a numeric keypad on the keyboard. I do a lot of entering of numbers (and I suspect do a significant proportion of other potential W500 buyers) and not having a numeric keypad is a real limitation. Separate USB keypads don't really fix the problem because they don't offer the convenience and ergonomics of having it on the keyboard. Given the fact that it is aimed at true power users who can justify its cost, it should also offer the option of the keypad. I know this would mean a redesign but I believe there is enough room there (there may need to be some resizing of the current keys to fit it in but for those who crunch a lot of number its would be worth it. Given that many of the competitors who offer less capable machines can successfully fit the numeric keypad on a 15 inch machine then Lenovo should be able to do it without stuffing up the integrity/userbility if the current keyboard.
    Anyone agree?

The laptops my employer provides (probook 6550b & elitebook 8560's) have numeric keypads. What I dislike about the keyboards with them is how off-center the keyboard, track pad and touch pad are. Haveing the keybpard centered is much better for true mobile work. A number pad sounds nice, and If I were an accountant, CPA or someone that works with numbers a great deal, it coul dbe a desireable feature. (or get an external number pad if that important.) Overll, I like the placement of lenovo's keyboard and other keys much better than what HP has done.

  • Urxvt vs gnome-terminal font style difference

    Hi All,
I`m using ubuntu mono font with cleartype patches for my terminal. On gnome-terminal the fonts look good  but on rxvt-unicode they look different (more sharp, thin and wide).
How do I make the fonts look good in urxvt just like gnome-terminal?
In the screenshot above, left side is gnome-terminal and right is rxvt-unicode.
Here is the relevant chunk from ~/.Xresources:
    Xft.dpi: 96
    Xft.antialias: true
    Xft.rgba: rgb
    Xft.hinting: true
    Xft.hintstyle: hintslight
    URxvt*font: xft:ubuntu mono:size=13:style=medium:antialias=true
    URxvt*boldFont: xft:ubuntu mono:size=13:style=medium:antialias=true
    Thanks.

orschiro wrote:You need to install rxvt-unicode-patched from the AUR as by default urxvt has some font rendering problems.
Thanks. I should have mentioned this before, I`m using rxvt-unicode-256xresources from AUR. This packages has same patches as rxvt-unicode-patched. However, I have tried both rxvt-unicode-patched and rxvt-unicode-256xresources and both versions have the same issue.
On the flip side, I removed the xft,freetype2 and cairo cleartype patches and installed -ubuntu patches. With this I was able to get the desired quality in urxvt, but then gnome-terminal,emacs and other X apps get the bad font rendering.
Unfortunately, I do no understand the details of font configuration like antialias-ing, hinting etc to tweak this.
