Numeric keypad locked on

I have a problem like this with my Powerbook G4 17 - it's a system which was upgraded from a Pismo to a Powerbook G4 17, with software strarting from 10.0 and upgraded through Leopard.
The problem is the first Powerbooks supported the embedded numeric keypad, and now that there is no more support for the numeric keypad, but my Powerbook G4 doesn't know that.
The keyboard acts like the numeric keypad is engaged, and I don't know how to turn it off.
When I first got my MacBook Pro 17 (early 2008) and transferred software with the Apple migration tool (via firewire) I had this symptom but the guy at the Genius Bar at the Apple Store went in to Preferences and disabled something in the Universal Access Control Panel, but I don't remember what.
Now that my Powerbook G4 17 is experiencing the same symptom, I don't know what to turn off.
Note that this doesn't happen when I Screen Share or VNC into the Powerbook.

Sorry for the long delay.
Actually, I did - duhh - finally actually take a look at my Powerbook G4 and found that it did indeed support the embedded numeric keyboard, and I could turn it off the proper key.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.

  • Numeric keypad locked Mavericks on Mac Mini Older Wired Keyboard

Using Mac mini on mavericks and I can't unlock or get the extended numeric keypad to work
I have tried two different wired USB old style apple keyboards and the extended numeric keypad won't work using either keyboard
I've tried pressing the Num Lock key and holding it down
Something I don't know? Please help

If you can't get this sorted out, why not just buy a new $12 Logitech usb optical mouse from Walmart, which will have left and right mouse buttons.
Control+click is the same thing as clicking with the right mouse button on a two-button mouse. Problem solved.
BTW I use these inexpensive Logitech mice on all the Minis I set up.

  • Number lock - ThinkPad USB keyboard and USB numeric keypad- they're not independent

Because Lenovo has discontinued my favorite keyboard ever, the USB ThinkPad with Ultra Nav full size keyboard with number pad, I bought a keyboard and numeric pad separately. I ended up with the 55Y9003 ThinkPad USB Keyboard with Track Point and the 33L3225 numeric keypad. That gives me the full solution, a good keyboard with a numeric keypad. Well, almost.
The issue I'm having is that the number lock on the main keyboard (turns the "uio", "jkl" and other keys into a number pad) controls the number lock on the separate keypad, and vice versa. What I want is for the numeric keypad to always be set for numbers and my main keyboard to always be set for letters. Instead, what I have is both are set for numbers or not, together. This of course defeats the main point of having a separate keypad for the numbers.
Is there a setting somewhere to fix this? I'm running Windows XP Professional on an HP Compaq desktop computer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

I have the same problem. Would be interested to hear of any solutions as well.

  • Lost numerical keypad function

During the middle of a long photo editing session the num lock light went out and the numeric keypad ceased to function. Pushing num lock didn't change anything. Removed all other USB devices, tried all the USB ports, restarted, reinstalled OS. Nothing worked. Replaced keyboard with new one and repeated all of the above. Still nothing. Any suggestions?

    Are "mouse keys" on?
    Try this:
System Preferences - Universal Access - "Mouse" tab - mouse keys: off
    worked for me.

  • Using Numeric Keypad In Oracle Forms 6i

    Dear All,
I am facing some problems when I am Working with Numeric Keypad on Oracle Forms 6i.
I have 10 Buttons and In Every Button Property I have defined the "Access Key".
    e.g
    Buttons | Property   | Value
    Button1 | Access Key | "1"
    Button2 | Access Key | "2"
    Button3 | Access Key | "3"
    Button4 | Access Key | "4"
    Button5 | Access Key | "5"
    Button6 | Access Key | "6"
    Button7 | Access Key | "7"
    Button8 | Access Key | "8"
    Button9 | Access Key | "9"
Button0 | Access Key | "0"Example : When I will Press Only "1" Using Numeric Keypad, Message Window will appear with the Message "You have Pressed 1..."
All Buttons are functioning Properly when I Pressing (One Key Stroke) 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0 using Numeric KeyPad.
    But I am not able to apply this Technique on "*" , "/" , "-" , "+" , "." , "Num Lock".
How Can I utilize these Characters(*,-,+,/,NumLock) in my application to perform a certain task using Single Key Stroke through Buttons or any other way in Oracle Forms 6i.
Note : We don't want to give Keyboard / Mouse to User. We have given a Numeric KeyPad to the User for a Certain Task.
    Thanks in Advance

It works for me on 10g but the only pitfall is the " * ", the workaround is to use the " & " in the label next to the key you want.
    for example:
    Button*   label &*
    Button-   label   &-
    Button/   label   &/
    Button+   label   &+
    Button.   label   &.Try it

  • Any ideas on why the numerical keypad on the far right isn't working?

Any ideas on why the numerical keypad on the far right isn't working?
I am running Windows Vista Business with ALL of the latest M$ updates.

    Hi,
what Apple keyboard do you use ?
Usually the Num-Lock function is enabled using the 'Clear'-key (directly above the '7'-key on the numpad).

  • Numeric keypad not working

The numeric keypad no longer functions with my Apple keyboard when trying to input numbers with Excel or AppleWorks. It has functioned in the past. The screen just freezes. Not sure what might have caused the change. Trying a different known working keyboard with keypad does not work either.
Would doing a SMU reset help?
    Any suggestions?
Disk Utilities corrected permissions but the problem persists.

Thanks for the hint, I found the following:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh1714.html
    My numeric keypad doesn't work
The way the numeric keypad works depends on your computer, the keyboard you're using, the application you're working in, and whether the Num Lock key is engaged. Usually, the numeric keypad is used to enter numbers in a document, but in some applications you might be able to use the keypad to navigate (move around in) your document.
Press the Num Lock key to switch between the ways the numeric keypad functions.

  • Enabling numeric keypad

    Hi,
I have a java application where I cannot use the numeric keypad on the keyboard while running it on linux. The NumLock is on and I still cannot use them (nothing happens when I type on them). I do not think its soemthing in my code since when I run it on Windows the numeric keypad works fine. Unless I have to do something special for linux... does anyone know why this happens? I checked it on some other application (not mine) and I had the same problem. Help anyone?
    Thanks

It sounds like a problem in linux. I suggest you ask the forum for the version of linux you have.
I am not aware of anything you need to in java to enable to num lock.

  • Disable embedded numeric keypad?

    Hello knowledgeable Mac folks,
Somehow, my father has been managing to repeatedly and unintentionally activate the embedded numeric keypad in his iBook keyboard (the numbers below the letters M, J, K, L, U, and I) as he types. (This has been happening in a number of applications: Word, Firefox, etc.)
My assumption is that he is somehow accidentally hitting certain keys that activate this as he types, but I thought I would check in with the experts. Could this be an indication of a larger issue, or is it likely that he's just unknowingly activating it as he types?
If the latter, what would be the keys that would activate this? How would he deactivate it when he does accidentally activate it? And even more, is there any way to disable this embedded numeric keypad so that he couldn't accidentally activate it at all?
I've been looking around for answers and haven't found anything. Thanks for any help you can offer!
    Best,
    Emily

    Hi Ronda,
    I believe he's using 10.3.9.
There haven't been any other major issues -- this is the only one. Usually he uses it on a table, and over the summer he's been actually using it on his lap, so I suspect he's just setting it off accidentally as he types . . .
However, when this is happening, the green num lock light does not come on, which is what made me wonder if there was something else going on.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Apple numeric keypad keyboard caps LED not working...

    Hi,
I am using numeric keypad(wired one) with my iMac, suddenly, when i switched on the machine in evening and tried tap the CAPS key and it doesn't light up but the caps lock is working perfectly fine.
I saw many posts regarding this on Apple discussions, but, none of them has worked for me.
Sometimes, i use this keyboard with Windows 7 also it is not working for that too. I tried with many other PCs including Windows or Mac but, didn't worked.
I discovered that Apple is providing protection against accidently CAPS lock with new manufactured keyboards, i bought my iMac 15 days back.
My entire work in on Mac and on the application i used to work on, i need to enter the password at almost 4 locations and with out knowing that CAPS lock is on or off, really taking a lot of time.
Can any body suggest that the problem is with the LED Bulb or what? or this a manufacturing fault? or i need to go for a new keyboard?
Your comments are really appreciated in this regard.
    Regards,
    MacLover

Hi, my first suspect would be a bad Keyboard.
Open System Preferences>Keyboard>Modifier keys, is Caps Lock set to No Action?
Open Keyboard Veiwer in Sys Prefs>International or Languages, do the letters switch to upper case when Caps Lock is pressed?

  • Numlock behaving oddly when using external numeric keypad

Hi guys, I have a user who's num-lock toggles between on and off with every key stroke when typing on her external numeric keypad.  We have switched out her pad 3 times and made sure the keypads worked in the Dells we have at other stations.  Any idea why this maybe happening?

  • Numerical keypad not functioning in Windows partition of Boot Camp

Unlike other users, the new keyboard is working fine in Windows -- mostly. Any ideas on why the numerical keypad on the far right isn't working? Is there a "Num Lock" key that I need to press when on the Windows side? If so: where? Can't find it on the keyboard.
Also: does anyone know if one of the software applications (Parallels or VM Wave Fusion 2) is able to mediate these hardware issues?

  • Hp pavilion dv7 notebook numeric keypad not working

The numeric keypad on my hp pavilion dv7 notebook does not work.  I can't get the num lock to work or any of the number keys to respond.

    Hi,
While this could be a hardware issue, it's always worth trying the following.
Open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager, expand Keyboards, right click the entry 'Standard PS/2 Keyboard' and select Uninstall.
    Shutdown the notebook.
Then unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
Note:  If the keyboard doesn't work when trying to access or navigate the Bios Menu, then this is probably a hardware fault.
