Numerous start-up chimes during start-up
I purchased a 24" iMac for my 81 year old father who lives a time zone away. He called the other night and said "listen to this". During start-up, the iMac plays a whole sequence of chimes. They seem random, I've never heard that sound before, it's unlike the gong or the beep during a firmware update. Plus they continue for 5 - 6 minutes. The computer finally boots up and works fine. I explained how to reset the PRAM and that worked for one start-up. Everything is up to date in Software Update. Anyone had a similar experience?
Here is a link to a Start up tones letter from Apple, see if any of these sound like what you heard.

Turning off Power-On "Chime" during start-up
Hello fellow Mac users,
I need advice on how to temporarily and/or permanently turn off the
Power-On/Restart "Chime" during start-up on iMac (with wireless MAC keyboard).
I tried holding down the 'mute' button during start-up until Apple symbol shows up and that did not work.
I also tried 'muting' volume before restart and that also did not work.
My external speakers are shut off but the Chime sound still comes from the iMac speakers.
Thanks,
EdwardsonWelcome to the Apple Discussions!
Some folks use Statrtup Sound.
If you completely silence your Mac you remove its form of communicating issues to you during startup. The chime alerts you that the Mac has passed the POST, Power On Self Test and has found usable RAM. When it fails to do so it may sound other tones during startup to alert you to what is wrong. -
Multiple chimes during startup
Frequently, during startup my mac will go thru more than one boot cycle. I hear the chime and several seconds later it restarts and chimes again. Sometimes just once and at other times it may restart three or more times before reaching the login screen.
I've run Disk Utility's permissions and disk repair cycles and checked the same using Drive Genius. I also tried booting with all the peripherals un-plugged but the results were the same. What else should I try?Hello Barry,
I stopped using TotalFinder 12 days ago and have not had the multiple startup chimes since. I've made no other changes to my system so I feel fairly confident I've found the cause. I posted a problem report with BinaryAge. I hope they can resolve this. I really like the app.
I'm going to put the app back into my login items and see if the problem returns. I'll post an update of the results

First generation MacBook Air running OSX 10.6.8
Hi,
From what you describe it's certainly a Hard Drive failure so you'll definetely need to contact HP. Personally, considering this is the 2nd HDD in under 2 months, I say it's either bad luck ( however unlikely ) or there is another issue at play - it may be worth suggesting this to HP when you contact them.

My MacBook starts-up without prior request....
Hi there,
I've had my MacBook just over a year now, but recently he (I say "he", because "it" just doesn't sound right) has just got an annoying new habit...and I for the life of me cannot figure out why he is doing it to me. I often watch a DVD before I go to sleep, and I use the Energy Saver options in the System Preferences to make him shut down at a certain time when I know I'll be asleep. This works fine, however recently at 2am exactly every night, he decides to startup, and although the startup noise isn't too loud in the day when there is background noise also, at night when it is silent it loud enough for a wake up call for me. I have checked the start-up / wake up setting in the System Preferences under Energy Saver, that is not checked, nor is it set. Is there anywhere else on my Mac that would be telling it to start at this time every night? It is extremely annoying to keep on waking upMac OSX runs self diagnostics and minor repairs on itself at early morning hours. This shouldn't start the computer up, but the fans might spin up. Try zapping your PRAM. (As you hear the chime during startup, hold down COMMANDOPTION+PR until you hear the chime twice. Then open your disk utilities and Repair your permissions.
Just an idea. -

Chime and black screen? Is the HD dead?
Please,
My iBook G3 600 chimes during start up but the screen remains black. This symptoms began to affect the iBook about four weeks ago and I have sent it to Apple assistence.
I have noticed that when I pressed the case (middle/left/up) everything went normal. First the assistence guy told me that the problem was just like a minor one and then he told me that the problem is the logic board. My ibook have its logic board replaced about three years ago. The price of a new logic board is expensive its garanty is only three months. One could say all iBook logic boards are faulty and one day, soon or after, the Ibook will die becouse of it.
I did not accepted the assitence suggestion of replacing the logic board and now, after the assistence analysis, the ibook only chimes and I see a black screen in front of me. Pressing the case no longer works.
It seems that the problem is the GPU and I will try to fix it myself using the "smart GPU fix" (foam, scotch etc..).
But before trying to fix it I would appreciate any suggestions regarding the following questions:
1) Is my HD dead? It only chimes and I can not reset PRAM.
2) If the "smart fix" does not work can I use my HD as external one? Is there any case to transform it into an external HD?
I am afraid my HD is dead!
Sorry about my english and thanks in advance.

ibook 600 12 Mac OS X (10.3.9)There is probably nothing wrong with your hard drive.
Yes, you could remove the hard drive and put it in a 2.5-inch external enclosure (FireWire would be best).
Do you live in the United States? If so, try calling (800) 767-2775 and ask for Customer Relations (NOT Customer Service--they can't help you) and ask them to please make an exception to the three-year limit in your case.
If the answer from Apple is absolutely, positively, "NO!" you may want to consider trying the shim fix suggested by John Sawyer elsewhere here in the Displays Forum:
[Y]ou can often fix this yourself by removing the iBook's bottom housing, and placing a shim of any sort, about 1mm to 1.5mm thick, onto the raised square on the bottom shield. I use a Scotch mounting square--you can get them in hardware stores and many grocery stores. When you reinstall the bottom case, it will press against this shim, which will press against the graphics chip, and may allow the chip to come into better contact with the logic board.

Instructions for removing the lower case:
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/50.5.0.html
If Apple doesn't come through for you and the shim fix doesn't work (or you're leery of trying it), DT & T Computer Services in Fremont, California offers the cheapest repair I've found. They have a six-month warranty on the repair.
Once you get it fixed, try never to pick it up by the left front corner alone. Rumor has it that can contribute to logic board failure when the case flexes, causing the graphics chip to come loose from the logic board. If you're picking it up in your left hand (as I often do mine), pick it up in the center under the trackpad.
Good luck. -
Refurb C2D Mini occasionally gets into startup chime loop
I'm supporting a pre-2009 1.83GHz Core2Duo Apple refurb Mini that about once a week goes into a continuous loop thusly:
Press power button, Mini gets to startup chime, then it waits a few seconds and does the startup chime again. It repeats this ad infinitum and never gets past the startup chiming. Only way to stop this is to force a power off. At that point, it will generally startup OK.
There are no diagnostic beeps or flashes on front light. Hard Drive passes all DiskUtility tests. And the Mini works fine except when this startup problem occurs. The Mini is connected to a good UPS, so I'm ruling out bad mains power as the source of the problem.
Problem is so sporadic, that I'm concerned that my local independent Apple dealer won't be able to diagnose it. This dealer also has a reputation for keeping Macs for a month or so while it waits for parts. So my preference would be to deal with AppleCare directly over the phone and via mail-in. The Mini is within the one-year warranty period, but outside the 90-days of free phone support. I'm willing to buy AppleCare to expedite the solution of this problem. But even then, I'm worried that the problem is flakey enough that Apple is going to pass on it. I'm not within reasonable range of a real Apple Store, so all interaction with Apple will have to be over the phone and via delivery services.
What are the chances that Apple would know that this Mini was returned and refurbed for having precisely this issue with its original owner?
I'm open to advice. Thanks.Update.
This has happened two more times, including just now.
If the Mini is forced off by holding down the power button, it then is able to be started normally after just a pro-forma 1 minute wait.
The startup chime is about half the duration of a normal startup chime. And there is about 2 seconds between each chime during the looping.
As an additional update, I found out by talking to AppleCare that mail-in service is not available for Minis, like it is for Apple notebooks. So purchasing AppleCare would not relieve me of having to deal with my local Apple authorized service provider -- who is not likely to have the patience to experience this sporadic problem. -
How to change PDF page's numeration?
I've a PDF document that starts at page 312. When I use a PDF Reader to jump quickly to a specifical page, I can't do it because, for the program, page 312 is page 1, page 313 is page 2, page 314 is page 3... Does exist an app that allows me to match correctly the page number and the number printed (without edit the second)?
Thanks, it worked on my Mac apps. But the problem is that the new numeration is not recognized by my PDF Reader on iPad (goodnotes), so numeration starts from 1...

Random, Sudden Shutdowns - A redux and other things to rule out first
Do a google search for "macbook random shutdown" and you'll find many people with similar problems reporting on various forums. At present, this issue has not been picked up by the mainstream PC news media. However, one should also note that only a fraction of those with problems are suffering this particular fault. A large number of other reasons must be ruled out before a MacBook owner should become convinced their machine is one which suffers this problem. Bad RAM, poorly seated RAM, improperly installed hard drive, corrupted OS, corrupted plists, bad batteries, bad chargers, corrupted PMU, and corrupted NVRAM all need to be ruled out first!
My own MacBook suffered the random sudden shutdown malady and eventually required complete replacement after a logic board replacement did not solve the issue. Some of the MacBooks appear to have a hardware problem which surfaces after a period of use. Many reported their problems starting after a month of ownership. Coincidentally, that also coincided with the release of 10.4.7, but most likely that is not at the root of the sudden, random, shutdown problem.
(However, 10.4.7 is strongly implicated in a separate MacBook problem - colored vertical lines during boot on some machines. That is probably a separate issue.)
Description of the Random, Sudden Shutdown Problem
MacBook suddenly shuts off to a completely powered down state seemingly at random. There are no kernel panic, mouse freezing, or other premonitory symptoms. The machine simply powers down suddenly. The screen goes black. The hard drive spins down and no sleep light illuminates. The machine simply turns itself off.
The shutdowns may occur on either battery or with AC adapter attached. Some owners report their MacBook is less prone to sudden shut down while on battery vs AC adapter. My own afflicted MacBook would suddenly shutdown on a fully charged battery or on either of two AC adapters.
The shutdowns occur with either 10.4.6 or 10.4.7 OS loaded. I went through several cycles of clean installs of the base 10.4.6 and the Intel Combo update to 10.4.7 before it became clear that it mattered not which OS was running. Another indicator that this is not an OS issue is that sudden shutdowns can occur in target mode and also when running just the Apple Hardware Test - which relies on minimal software to operate.
The shutdowns tend to grow more frequent once they begin. They may worsen to the point that a machine will not complete boot up before shutting down. It may take several power up presses to start the machine. Oddly enough, a machine that had difficulty starting up, may be easy to start up several minutes later. It may run for hours or minutes before another sudden shutdown. The frequency is low and random enough that is very difficult to demonstrate this fault to a service technician.
Some users are able to induce a sudden shutdown by running their CPU's at high load and thus heating up the machine. This is easily done by running the yes command in two Terminal windows. Some users report their MacBook is more prone to sudden shutdowns when their CPU is relatively cool. The bipolar reporting is confusing. There may be more than one type of sudden shutdown being reported. One due to CPU overheating and another due to another hardware problem which has yet to be elucidated.
Resetting of the PMU and PRAM MAY temporarily reduce the frequency of the sudden shutdowns, but the effect is temporary. Indeed, the effect may not even be real given the randomness of the shutdowns. None-the-less, one must perform PMU and PRAM resets to ensure that some corruption of those devices is not creating a reason for shutdowns. On my own MacBook, resetting PMU and PRAM (four chimes) did not prevent the random sudden shutdowns.
The sudden shutdowns occur with well seated stock RAM, replacement RAM, and reseated/replaced hard drives. Swapping out and testing both RAM and hard drive helps to eliminate those as the source of the problem. On my own machine, I exchanged the RAM and the hard drive to eliminate them as the cause. This made it considerably easier for the Apple genius to decide it was an internal problem.
In my case, a logic board replacement did indeed solve the fault, but several days later, sudden shutdowns began again. Presumably either the replacement board has the same weakness as the original or some other component of the machine was the actual reason for the sudden shutdowns. The former is quite likely because the machine was made stable for several days with a new logic board. At that point, I requested to be swapped to a new machine and the Apple Store manager wisely decided to help out his customer. For that I am most grateful. However, it is unlikely that the majority of people will have their machines swapped out, but instead repaired.
At this time, no official statement regarding cause for or acknowledgment of the MacBook's sudden random shutdown problem has been made. Because the underlying cause has not been revealed, it is impossible to know that a logic board replacement will permanently solve the problem or merely result in the same fault recurring later on the replacement board. Of course, we do not know if it actually is a logic board flaw.
My advice to MacBook owners whose machines develop the sudden random shutdown symptoms are to...
1. Get your data backed up immediately. The machine will likely suffer more and more frequent shutdown events.
2. Revert to stock RAM and hard drive if you have installed after-market replacements. You must do this and see if the shutdowns continue to occur. Otherwise, the first thing blamed will be your RAM and hard drive.
3a. Perform a PMU reset, by shutting down the MacBook. Removing the battery. Disconnect the AC Adapter. Then, press the power button for five seconds. The reinstall the battery and mains adapter. Restart the machine.
3b. Reset PRAM by holding option-command-P-R keys down during startup until you hear the chime at least three or four times.
Resetting the PMU and PRAM are standard procedures you'll otherwise be asked to perform to diagnose your machine.
4. Do a CLEAN install of the OSX if you wish to totally eliminate a bad OS install as the problem. This will destroy all your data. Alternatively, an archive and install will be helpful without totally destroying your data, but that will not let you exonerate your system files and settings. An alternative is to run Apple's hardware test utility which is found on your OS installation disc. However, an extended hardware test is needed because the shutdown flaw may take hours to surface.
Note: If your MacBook has become so "narcoleptic" that it cannot even complete a boot up sequence, try holding the power button down until you hear a loud beep. That may allow an otherwise balky machine to start.
Once you have done the above, and are still seeing random sudden shutdowns, you have largely done the preliminary footwork that you'll need to prove whether your MacBook has this particular problem and not something more common. Then, call AppleCare or visit your Apple Genius to have the machine repaired or replaced. Hopefully, the root cause of this problem will be discovered, disclosed, repaired and prevented. For now, it appears only a fraction of the MacBooks are suffering this fault, but the machine population is still young. Overall, the MacBook is perhaps the finest laptop I've bought from Apple. It will be nice to trust the machine to not lose my work.
BTW - resetting PMU may induce a separate 10.4.7 related bug which results in your MacBook exhibiting a white screen with progressively more numerous vertical color lines during startup. This appears to be fixable by resetting PRAM and then temporarily changing display resolution to something other than the current setting and then back.thanks for the comprehensive info. i experienced this for the first time today. i bought my macbook the day they were released. the shutdown happenned for me after leaving my computer on overnight with no programs running. about two minutes into web browsing it shutdown. it then shutdown in the middle of restarts. i disattached power cord, external hard drive, dvd burner & ethernet & it powered up and has been working for about 20 minutes since.
this computer has really been a lemon. first my superdrive scratches the **** (just previewed this, i can't believe they sensor the h_ word?) out of discs, then the trackpad button becomes very hard to push. i've been working around those issues using an external dvd burner and mouse, but not sure how to work around sudden shutdowns. i haven't been able to send it in for repairs yet since i bought it cause i needed it's dvd authoring capabilities for a class i was taking, plus i wanted to make sure nothing else went wrong (self fulfilling prophecy?). i was planning on taking it on vacation with me, but guess i better pack my old ibook too (which other than a cd burner which sucked from the start, has been very reliable). i'll send in my macbook when i get back.
anyway, thanks for the info & advice! i'll back up my crucial data now.

OK, let's just start with I'm an idiot !! I know very little and more than enough to be dangerous !!
The machine is a G4 QS 800 DP running Tiger 10.4.11, it had been working well until about 10 days / 2 weeks ago when problems started, about the same time the Firefox, 3.6.18 update came out and I installed it, the problems may have started BEFORE the FF update by a couple of hours, just not sure now.
I was surfing the net and was interrupted with frozen, darkened screen with a multi language message saying I needed to restart the computer, OK, did that, then about an hour later the same darker screen and message, Ok do it again, then again less than an hourlater again, then 45 mins., then 1/2 hr, then another 1/2 hr, then 20 mins., it continued like this for the next 5 to 7 hours, and 9 or 10 "crashes", all the time the same message, I never saw anything else on the screen for any kind of warning or kernel panic (don't know where they show up).
So the battery is 15 months old and tests good (bought a new one anyway, no change, same problems), did the PMU, several times, for sure wrong & to often, no help there, maybe one out of 100 times I could get it to stay on & get online for awhile by holding the command +S keys till the grey screen started, then release them, the rest of the time, it would begin to start up, 10 to15 seconds and die, ... getting very frustrated I tried the reset on the front, no change, then try the "programmers button" (I said I was dangerously smart) then combinations of PMU, reset, prog'mer buttons, Battery out PMU , battery in Pmu, everything disconnected each time, grounding myself each time, trying to not screw up, but knowing I must have many times, even tried a GOOD HDD that BDAqua checked & partitioned for me that is still blank (no OS yet) with install disc & holding C down, still no good action, for few try's I had both hdd's plugged in and got small icon's 1 & 2 for both hdd's while they were in & plugged in.
I talked with BDAqua on saturday, late, after hours, he had already waited for me, so as I described what I had done, HE said that the PMU should be held for 20 TO 25 seconds (or longer maybe in some cases, my impression of what I was hearing), and here is the BIG THING he said that gave me an idea to ask this question, BDAqua asked if I had / suggested I try, doing the PRAM RESET 5 TIMES IN A ROW, of course I had not, and haven't yet. I did do it a few times in all that I was trying, but never in a row, because 1 time never got a positive result, I didb't think of multiple resets (I'm not all that smart, just dangerous). but from our talk, I think I understand it to mean, It may take many ( or multiples of 5 ?) to clear out (flush out the evil demons from the kernels ???) .......
SO MY QUESTION IS THIS; WHAT ARE THE MAGIC KEYBOARD STEPS / KEY COMBO'S, AND / OR PMU, OR RESET BUTTON, OR PROGRAMMER BUTTON SEQUENCES TO FOLLOW, BEFORE I GIVE UP AND CHANGE THE MOBO, CPU'S, OR WHATEVER, TO TRY AND SALVAGE MY G4 QS ???
ARE THERE MULTIPLES 5 (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 PMU RESETS TO CURE CERTAIN problems, like magic combinations ???)
....... any tricks of the trade that I can try, I have only had this machine for15 months and really like it and want cure it's troubles and WHAT EVER I DID TO IT THAT WAS WRONG !!!, it's a self esteem thing at this point, I can let it beat me because I hurt it, I must make it good to sve my own feelings, even though I did wrong, I must make ammends !!!

The PMU reset button is a momentary contact switch because the reset only requires momentary contact.
Another myth is that more than 2 chimes during a PRAM reset resets better.
A reset is a reset.
If you need more than is done in a PRAM reset after 2 chimes, use the NVRAM reset in Open Firmware.

Audio on my MacPro is no longer working.
How can I tell if my internal sound card is dead? Are there settings/drivers that I may be missing? If it is dead, is replacing it an option?
A few weeks ago my primary hard drive failed. When the drive was failing I noticed for the first time that there was no chime during startup. Now that I've installed a new primary hard drive, and have installed snow leopard, it appears that my audio isn't working at all. There is no chime during start up. I tried running the audio out of the headphone jack (in the front) and the line out (on the back) and still no audio. I tried several (I believe all) of the possible settings in System Preferences for Sounds.
Before installing snow leopard I had used an MBox (original) as the primary audio card. However, it seems like the original MBox (and the associated digicore audio driver) are not compatible with snow leopard. Luckily (although all the spec sheets say it is not compatible), I am still able to use my original MBox with protools 7.3 in snow leopard. Although, now that I have the new hard drive installed I haven't yet tried to run ProTools 7.3 with the MBox.If they are in a backup then

Installing Windows 7 Enterprise on a brand new PC
Hi, this is my first post here so please be gentle.
First of all I would like to mention what a great forum and resource this website is for noobs like myself and I would immensely appreciate any help / advice.
I recently applied for a Desktop Support position and gained an interview. Unfortunately I was unsuccessful at the interview stage. One of the questions asked in the interview was "talk me through how you would install Windows 7 Enterprise
on a brand new PC".
I've previously worked as an IT Service Desk Analyst but want to get out of this call centre environment and start working out in the field instead. I've previously performed clean installs of Windows 7 Home Premium numerous laptops at home during
my spare time. However, I understand that installing Windows 7 Enterprise on a new corporate PC is somewhat quite different and there are many approaches for this. I really need advice for this approach as I have another interview lined up for Wednesday and
am sure a similar sort of question will again be asked. I will also need to know how to add a new PC to the network once Windows 7 Enterprise is installed.
Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you.it worked
thanks
but i actually have another problem
a year ago (whenever the newest Mac OS came out), i upgraded the OS.
in the middle of installing the OS, i got error messages, and i had to restart the installation a couple times before i finally got through.
when i tried to install OS X on my new hard drive, the same error message came up.
anyone know whats wrong with my computer?
thanks for all your help by the way. -
I can't open programs without it crashing - help
i try to open app store, itunes mail etc and the apps quit - highly frusting and nothing i seem to try helps here is the error report for the last time can anyone recommend a fix

I'd suggest starting up in Safe Mode first and see if the problem. The method for starting in Safe Mode is described in the following article:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
Safe Mode imposes certain limitations and will not load startup items and various other add-ons. It also does a little bit of clean up. Once up in that mode I'd start some applications that had previously caused the crash and see if they now crash.
If you can't get a crash to occur then it suggests something being loaded on boot is causing the issue. In that case, go into System Preferences->Users and Groups, select our login and go to Login Items. Disable them all and then restart. Again test to see if you get the crashes. If you don't start adding back Login Items one at a time until you find a culprit. If you find one you can investigate with the vendor to see if some quirk exists, or you may just need to reinstall the item.
If the crashes occur in Safe Mode things are a bit more interesting. You could have a corrupt OS installation or you might have a hardware issue of some sort. Hopefully you have a backup of your boot drive.
You could then boot into Recovery Mode (holding down the Command Key and R when you hear the chime during startup and keeping it down until you enter recovery mode). I'd first try checking the disk and permissions with Disk Utility and if there are problems do the appropriate repair. If you do repair the drive, go ahead and reboot and see if the problem is fixed.
If there are no errors or the crashes still are taking place, the next step is a bit more involved. You would again boot into Recovery Mode. This time be sure you have a solid internet connection and plug in the laptop so you have power for the entire process. At that point you could install Lion to get fresh files written for the OS.

My copy of LR4 does not have a profile for the Canon EF 400/5.6. There is one for the EF 400/4 IS DO and the EF 400/2.8 IS, but not for the 400/5.6. Does that mean that this lens doesn't need any corrections or just that nobody bothers?
