I've had it for 3 days now. The first 3 days have been fine.
Today I used Software Update to apply the 10.5.3
updates, including the one for the OS. Restarted. Now my machine
has hung 5 times in less than 2 hours.
I found this article and applied the Combo Patch for 10.5.3.
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1053comboupdate.html
A 536 MB download later the problem re-occured in about 5 minutes.
Here is the complete Software Update Log:

The above topic is specific to MacBook Pro but the problem is not.
Solution:
Reload the OS back to 10.5.2.
Generally Software Update caused the problem.
I'm not clear on which software update caused the problem.
It's been suggested that the Graphics Unit Software Update was the culprit.
Alas, I did not install that update.
So I suspect it was "Mac OS X Update" (10.5.3)
If someone wishes to determine this then just apply the OS update
for 10.5.3 and see if you have the same problem with the NVidia
Graphics Card.
Lastly, I'd really like it if Apple Tech Support resolved this issue
and posted that the issue is fixed.

iMac, Strange behavior and eventual freeze of the screen!
While using software like google-earth, aperture 2 or sometimes even while just browsing the net with safari 3.1, or changing of the space (leopard spaces) strange behavior with the graphics starts: slowniness showing the dock, intermittent unresponsiveness, frezzing of the screen for various seconds, strange lines or pixelation on the screen, and eventually, spinning pizza and complete freeze, forcing me to restart the machine with the power button. (the mouse pointer moves but anything else is absolut un-responsive)
This happens to me several times a day, while different kind of tasks, its very annoying feeling nervous not knowing when the screen will freeze again.
If i got the chance to see the console before the freeze i can see a lot of lines containing:

I have tried resseting PRAM, disconect all usb-firewire periphs.. repair permissions, etc.. nothing seems to help...
I also reinstalled completely leopard, and all my aplications, it took a complete day, with all software updates, leopard graphics update, security updates, etc, etc... and 15 minutes after that it froze again.
Has anybody experience something similar or may it be a problem with my graphic card?

Sorry, hit the hotkey by accident and posted without finishing.
Try updates again. They go quick and can not harm the system.
Now, let's skip to the Logitech mouse. Are you aware of the threads in this forum regarding that scenario? The logitech drivers at Leopard's release were incompatible with 10.5. They may have subsequently released new drivers or updates. Apparently, jumpy mouse behavior was a problem with the old drivers BEFORE the graphic updates and 10.5.2 updates were posted. Perhaps the problems exhibit themselves differently with these updates. Worth checking. If there are no new drivers for your mouse you can check out Steermouse or USBOverdrive. Google those.
Your epson drivers are out of date if they say PPC. Install the Intel versions.
    http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid= 88043&infoType=Downloads
This link may do the trick.
When I say make all updates, I mean you should go to Apples "support" and then "download" site and manually browse every applicable update for your machine going back to October 27, 2007. You will be surprised that some of the updates may not have been installed or packaged or delivered....I have personal experience with a friend on this one. The system would tell him if the update was already performed or not required, etc....therefore no harm no foul.
To recap: Manually download and install every applicable update from Leopard's release.
Install the new scanner and mouse drivers. Avoid PPC processes in backround.
    Then check out this:

and check the second link about installation without CD

  • Horizonal lines on screen, screen hangs, graphics channel exception errors

Although I've seen multiple threads in this forum regarding these issues, I'm creating a new one to track a possible cause.
Symptoms: Since the Leopard upgrade, I've been seeing a lot of problems related to graphics, including:
    1. Strange horizontal lines across windows. Move the window, or scroll in it, and the horizontal lines remain.
    2. Other odd graphic anomalies.
    3. System freeze. The mouse continues to move, the spinning beach ball appears, can't quit, force quit or close any windows. Hard restart is the only option.
    Troubleshooting:
Each time one of the graphic anomalies or freezes occurred, I opened Console and looked at the system.log. I found the following type of entry in the log:
    May 6 13:56:45 Jims-Computer kernel[0]: NVChannel(GL): Graphics channel exception! status = 0xffff info32 = 0x6 = Fifo: Parse Error
    Attempted Resolutions:
I've tried all standard troubleshooting including resetting PRAM, repairing permissions, etc. I tried reloading Leopard from scratch and loading all updates individually, as well as reloading Leopard and using the combo updater. I've tried reloading Leopard and NOT applying the Leopard Graphics Update.
    Analysis:
These issues are not related to any particular application, although they often happen in Safari. I have the maximum RAM in my iMac and am not running any heavy hitting apps. I don't think they are temperature related. I have checked my hardware and there are no problems.
    Theory:
I have found that many times when this happens, I look in the system.log and find the aforementioned error, and just before that, I see entries in the log related to a screen saver I am running called Electric Sheep. I have now gone in and disabled Electric Sheep, and have stopped my computer from downloading and rendering new sheep. That was 2 days ago, and I've had no freezes or anomalies since. I'm wondering if anyone else that is experiencing these issues is also running Electric Sheep. Please report back in this thread if you have these types of issues and are using Electric Sheep.
    Thanks, Jim

This is a VRAM Issue. I finally had mine fixed. Bad news is you'll need your logic board replaced.

  • NVChannel(GL): Graphics Channel Timeout

Everytime I try to use Photoshop CS3, I get the NVChannel timeout and everything freezes. This has been going on several days. I have reinstalled Photoshop and still am having the problem. Can anyone advise? Is my graphics card going bad?

We're already discussing this issue here :

    Regards

  • Does the amount of VRAM matter for AP3 when considering the graphics options in the new iMacs?

The graphics options go from 512MB to 2GB. The cards themselves (6750, etc) are very capable, but does the amount of VRAM matter? Will 512MB be sufficient for AP3 or should I go for the 2GB of graphics RAM? Why or why not? Thanks.

Well Aperture is one of the few programs in the world that will havely rely on the GPU. 512 MB should be suffiecient (*), but more will bring more speed to Aperture.
*: At least it is in my machine, though using brushes extensively will slow things down quite a bit.

  • PM kernel NVDA OpenGL: Channel Exception

Greetings! I have been having a issue with lockups, My new AL Macbook 2.0Ghz will simply become unresponsive, sometimes in parallel with mild display corruption (a icon or two may become shifted). I can move the mouse for about 30sec before it locks up, clicking on things won't work tough. The mac won't panic just lock up. Also the caps lock will continue to work, ie the light can be put on/off. However disconnecting the LCD, USB etc has no effect. Pulling the magsafe will cause the screen to dim as normal but the mac won't go to sleep when the lid is closed. It's only happened 3 times so far today. the console reveals this:

I have been using my macbook with an external LCD via apple's MiniDP to VGA adapter. Not sure if this will make a difference, I'm just trying to list details. I will admit I'm a bit starved for time due to the end of the quarter at college etc.... (I have everything backed up already ) I would like to know if there are any solutions for this in the way of a software patch. I notices several MacPro owners having similar issues with nVidia graphics cards. The solution for them was a complete system swap. I will most likely take that road when the quarter ends and I have time. any input would be appreciated!

  • Brand New iMac and Linksys WAG54G v2 - WEP but not WPA

    Hi All
    I have a brand new iMac and a Linksys WAG54G v2 wireless network hub;
I have set up the network with no encryption and everything works
I have set up the network with WEP encryption and everything works
I have set up the network with WPA encryption and everything works (PCs and printers) except my new iMac.
Occasionally it works (1 in 50) but mostly it fails with the message "There was an error joining the AirPort network "<name of SSID>".
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to troubleshoot/fix this?

I'm guessing my failures might be due to one of two problems; inability to find the router or connection timeouts; does anyone know how to monitor/snoop this connection and/or fix this problem?

  • Gaming on new iMac. / Office 2007 files on Mac.

    1)
My brother plays a lot of games and is currently using a N-Vidia GeForce 512MB Graphics Card.
I want to get him the new iMac because his current PC is too outdated (yeah it runs windows, lol). I was wondering whether there is anyway of getting a 512mb or 1gb graphics card into the new iMac?
    2)
Does anyone know how I can open docx files or any other Office 2007 files on Microsoft Office for Mac 2004. I haven't been able to find anything anywhere.
    Thanks.

    Sorry but no, there isn't.

Try Microsoft's Open XML File Format Converter

  • I have a new IMAC with a Maverick platform (I can update to Yosemite). I did all graphics on a G5 Power PC (very old), in Freehand (very old)... How can I open old Freehand files on this new Mac? Can I still open and work in Freehand on this new Mac?

Let me see if I've gotten this right! You want to remove an account from BOTH machines? Do this for your new machine first, then for the other.
Click the Apple logo on the top left of the screen, System Preferences, Users and Groups (under Systems), unlock the lock in the window if its locked (you need to know the password), select the user that you wish to remove, and click the - sign next to the + sign for Login options. A window will pop up with some options. Select Delete this user and securely, and click 'Delete user'.
After this, do an update from the App Store.
Thats all there is to it.
For the other machine repeat the process except for one thing. Before you delete the user in this case YOU, you will have to give Administrator priviledges to your son bu checking the box 'Allow user to administer this computer'.
Do NOT do anything from Finder ... if you dont know how to fix the consequences of the problems caused.
There is no need to unauthorize your iTunes account on your new machine. Do it on the old machine though.

Just bought brand new new iMac. When browsing in Safari, sometimes the text suddenly gets super large. I'm doing nothing except reading the screen, tho I usually have my hand resting lightly on the mouse. I can get back to normal size by clicking "actual size" in View. But then it does it again a minute or two later. What gives? Something seems defective--but what?

From System Preferences, Mouse, Point & Click, Secondary click.  Go to it hover over Secondary click and watch the short video sequence change it left right, left right, you will see exactly what is does. No I do not think your Mouse is defective, you simply need to take control of your Mouse finger.

  • Buying new iMac, which graphics card would be best?

I'm getting ready to buy a new iMac. I already have a 2010 27-in with a Radeon HD 5670 512 MB graphics (card? was built in as I remember). I need an additional iMac for my studio space and am deciding between the 21.5-in. w/ Intel Iris Integrated graphics and the NVIDIA GEForce graphics models. I do photography and art related video projects with music (Final Cut, Photoshop CSS, Logic Pro).
The 2010 iMac has worked fine for me. Which of the new iMacs would you recommend? Do I need extra dedicated graphics card or is the Intel Iris pretty comparable to what I've been getting with the Radeon?
I wouldn't mind saving a couple of hundred dollars to use on other things like a back up drive, but if it's going to be a big difference I could spend the extra $ for the NVIDIA.
    I'm not a gamer BTW.
    thanks for your input, tech-heads!
    Christine

Although the processor speed is slower, the i5 is much more efficient
than the i3.  In addition, the memory bus speed is faster than your
2010.  The result is you will have a faster computer.
Just for some performance numbers, here are the Geekbench
scores for your current computer and the one you are considering.
(64 bit single core test score/64 bit multi core test score)
    2010, i3, 3.2 GHz iMac ---> 2086/4491
    late 2013, 21.5", i5, 2.7 GHz ---> 3172/10255

  • New IMac GeForce 8800 GS Graphics card is really GeForce 8800M GTS

After calling NVIDIA I've finally discovered what this graphics card REALLY is.
This card is NOT the GeForce GS that was recently renamed to 9600 GSO. That card has 384 MB GDDR3 Memory with 550 Core Speed.
The new IMac GeForce is 8800M GTS.
Heres some specs on the new card:
    Pipelines 64 - unified
    Core Speed 500 MHz
    Memory Speed 800 MHz
    Memory Bus Width 256 Bit
    Memory Type GDDR3
    Max.Memory 512 MB
    Shared Memory No
    DirectX DirectX 10, Shader 4.0
    Power Consump 35 Watt
    Transistors Million
Features 1250 MHz Shader clock, Pure Video technology (H.264, VC-1, MPEG2, WMV9 decoder acceleration), HDCP-capable, PowerMizer 7.0 energy management (dynamic switching between performance and energy saving), HDR (high dynamic-range lighting), designed for Windows Vista, Dual-Link DVI-D exits for resolutions from TFT up to 2560x1600, PCI-E 16x, OpenGL 2.1, Gigathread technology.
Anyway, hope this clears up some confusion for people. I know it baffled me for a good few.

  • New IMac GeForce 8800 GS Graphics card questions

I am considering buying a new IMac 3.06 Intel Processor with 500 GB HD, 2GB RAM, Geforce 8800 GS Graphics Card and 24 inch display.
Will this computer be able to run Windows Vista Aero Glass with all features turned on via Bootcamp software included with Jaguar?
Also does anyone have any information on this GeForce 8800 GS card? I've tried googling it and keep getting sporadic results of Geforce GTS and Geforce GTX cards but nothing about this GS card!
I want to run Vistas AeroGlass and the games I'm interested in playing are WOW, Oblivion, Battlefield 2142 & COD 4.
Can the new IMacs with this GeForce 8800 GS handle all this?

I have the AL iMac 2.4GHz w/ 1GB RAM and the Radeon 2600 w/ 256. Running XP in BootCamp I can run COD4 @ Max and is very playable (not necessarily full throttle) w/ plenty of action on screen. Also the PREY demo works just about as good. If I go to 1600x1200 it will run flawlessly.
WoW will play great on Leopard (though I've had a few freezes in game:::not sure if this is Mac update related or patching for WoW itself). You can also max WoW out and it runs smoother than COD4 (WoW is older) but for the beauty of the game and smoothness tune it a bit and you are cool. And yes AAx8:)
    Can't wait until I go to the Corsair 4GB kit w/ 4-4-12 cycle:):):P

  • New iMac freezing, showing Graphics problems and Wifi Problems on 1st Day

My sister just received her new iMac - 20 inch - 500 GB drive.
I started seeing problems during the download of the FIRST software update from apple. There was a black box in the lower left corner of the software update window where it should have been grey (or metal).
On reboot, I also occasionally show weird flickering graphics in the lower right of the login screen.
My new iMac also frooze about 4 different times during the installtion of various updates during the first 4 hours of use. Mouse and keyboard would not work. Once it frooze at the login screen after clicking on the user name.
I also had wifi issues. After three hours of use, my STRONG wifi connection was lost. Moreover, I could not see any other wifi stations. (normally I would see 5 other wifi access points from my sister's neighbours). After reboot, the other wifi access points would appear including my sisters but I could NOT connect to my sister's wifi access point. It said I had an error. I checked the keychain and it showed the right key/password for my sister's wifi AP. I had to run Mac Network Diagnostics and reset wifi to get things working again.
It sounds like a sick iMac. I know others have experienced freezing. But given all these problems, should I ask for a new imac?

P.S. My sister got AppleCare as well. Maybe that was a good thing...

I had a long chat with Apple Support. It would appear that Apple's policy is not replace the computer unless it can be determined that it is a hardware problem (even though my problems started to appear right out of the box before I even had a chance to download any updates). According to the Apple product specialist, sometimes there are bad installs of the OS at the factory.
Apple wanted me to format the drive and reinstall the OS.
Fortunately, I did not have to reinstall the OS! I started to see graphics problems when I was asked to run the Disk Utilility off the Install DVD (so I could format the drive). So clearly there was a hardware problem.
In retrospect, I really wish there was an Apple Store nearby to buy Apple computers. I am sure the store manager would not ask me to go home and reinstall the OS etc and try again when the computer doesn't work properly out of the box.
Those who have Apple Stores nearby do not know how lucky they are!
