Nvidea optimus t430 windows 8

Hello,
I upgraded my system to windows 8, I made use of the promo offer of upgrading for €15,00, the first time, just after the installation, it booted normally and worked perfectly, but after my first restart, after showing the windows logo indicating that windows was starting, the computer would only show a black screen flashing on and off, about each second, when I moved the mouse while the screen was on, I could see the cursor.
After a little thought, I restarted in the BIOS and chose for the integrated graphics option and after this the laptop worked as it should, except for the video card so I downloaded the nvidea optimus driver and installed the optimus driver for windows 8, the installation went smoothly, so I decided to turn optimus back on, I restarted and went into the bios, and switched it on and got stuck with a flashing black screen again. So now I restarted and tried to see if the "discrete graphics" option works, it did but in very low resolution and in device manager it still didn't show my nvidea graphics card installed, nor did the nvidea settings program detect it, so now I'm back working with the integrated graphics.
Is there a solution to my problem? did i do something wrong during the upgrade? I already tried installing the driver again but that didn't work.
thanks in advance

Ok, I just went ahead and installed the bios version I mentioned in the post above, and it went smoothly, so after the pc restarted, i decided to restart the pc to see if there was someway to change the setting to UEFI, I saw a setting called UEFI/legacy boot and it was set to "both", I changed it into UEFI and saved and exited the BIOS. but the computer wouldn't load windows, so I shut it down using the power button, restarted into the BIOS and changed the settings back, now windows loaded properly.
After this I tried to restart and change the display settins to optimus, now the windows logo appeared, indicating that windows was starting and shortly after I got the following message: "pc ran into an error at start, collecting error info, when this was completed the computer restarted and boot up again showing just a black screen, not even the flashing I had before the bios flash, I waited a few minutes and decided it wasn't doing anything so i went ahead and pushed the button again to shut it down, after this I changed the bios settings to integrated graphics again, so now windows did a repair at start up, which scared the **** out of me, I thought I had wrecked my computer but after ten minutes or so it started normally.
it still doesn't show the GPU in device manager but i guess that's because of the integrated graphics setting in the BIOS, everything works now but still no GPU, did I do something wrong? what's my next step to try and get it working? or did I shut down the computer too fast when I saw the black screen?
please help me, I really like windows 8 but if I don't get it to work properly I revert back to windows 7 using my recovery disks!

• T430 windows 8.1 blackscreen/hangs, nvidia drivers fault

Hi I have a T430 with i7+ nvidia nvs 5400M.
I upgraded to 8.1, everything went smoothly, installed the drivers from lenovo update and windows update. At random times, typically when I play flash content or use metro apps, explorer.exe crashes, windows try to restart it and it goes an infinite loop with flashing screen. I can stop it only by cold reboot, which leads to work loss.
The event viewer showed ntdll.dll related error in explorer.exe and iexplorer.exe, and after contacting microsoft support, they checked my dump files and we found that it was nvidia driver related problem specifically :
FAILURE_BUCKET_ID:  NULL_CLASS_PTR_WRITE_c0000005_nvumdshimx.dll!Unknown.
I installed versions 320.92, 326.19, 327.23 and none of them work.
If I try to install the latest lenovo windows 8 version of the driver, i get black screen after the windows boot screen.
So I am in a situation that nvidia support tells me to contact lenovo, lenovo support told me that despite this windows 8.1 compatibility list http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?DocID=HT079684 , they do not support windows 8.1, and I should contact Microsoft, and of course Microsoft tells me that they are not in charge of developing graphic drivers (true).
I am really upset, I cannot work on my laptop since it is crashing every 30 minutes or so, and I don't want to rollback to windows 7. What should  I do?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

I could not reproduce this.
I started with T430 running Win8 and the supported Optimus drivers:  http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS032185
This package installs NV driver 9.18.13.1197 and Intel driver 9.17.10.2843
Then I upgrade to Win8.1, and everything continues to work.
I run Windows Update, and it installs new drivers for both NV and Intel graphics: NV driver 9.18.13.2702 and Intel driver 10.18.19.3316
The T430 seems working fine with Win8.1 and these drivers coming from Windows Update.
Can you please tell me specific app to run, or website to visit, to see the problem you have?

• NVIDA Optimus observation

Not really a problem, but when I ran the performance meter with my BIOS set on Optimus, I got a 4.7 on the Graphics catagory.  I wanted to see what it would be forcing the graphics card to the NVIDA 4200, so I set it up in the BIOS.  When I rebooted, the computer had to install the NVIDA driver.  I don't know whether the computer would have installed it if the Optimus setting had called for the NVIDA card, but I doubt it.
I guess my point is that you may think that your NVIDA card is up and running and it may not be....
BTW, I got a 5.1 in the graphics catagory with the NVIDA 4200 card.

The drivers for nVidia stand alone and nVidia + Intel (Optimus) are different. When the computer boots with Optimus support turned on in the BIOS it loads the Optimus driver set. If you turn off Optimus, then it loads the nVidia only driver. If you haven't installed the nVidia only driver, you will be prompted to install it the first time.
The reason for the 4.7 vs the 5.1 is that when Optimus is enabled Windows will only use the Intel GPU for the "Graphics" part of the test. It will still use the nVidia Card for the "Gaming" part of the test. Your WIE index is the lowest score overall.
If you want to see what your system would be like without Optimus, set the BIOS to the iGPU only. This should turn off the nVidia card. Then run the assessment. You should see a drop in the "gaming graphics" score.
For your Reference:
WIE of my T420 stock in optimus (i2520, 4GB PC3-10700 RAM, 500GB HDD) was 4.7. (Proc: 7.1; Memory 5.9; Graphics 4.7; Gaming graphics 6.5; Primary HDD 5.9)
WIE of my T420 with 8GB of RAM and in nVidia only was 5.2. (Proc: 7.1; Memory 7.5; Graphics 5.2; Gaming graphics 6.5; Primary HDD 5.9)
WIE of my T420 with 8GB RAM, Optimus, and SSD: 5.1 to 5.9. (Proc: 7.1; Memory 7.5; Graphics 5.1 to 5.9 (this changes every time I run it); Gaming Graphics 6.5; Primary HDD: 7.4)
WIE is not a great benchmark. There is a huge difference between runs, and I don't think a .4 is really adequate to show the difference between my system as it shipped, and the system as it is now.

• New SSD in T430, Windows not loading, tried everything...

Hi there,
I bought a T430 about a week ago. I'm not completely inept with computers: I successfully added another 4GB of RAM with no problems.
Then I wanted to replace my HDD with my SSD. I know the SSD works because it was in another laptop. I put it in an external dock; hooked it up to my T430; cleared it. I have kept the HDD as a safe backup, which I have used repeatedly since. I also made a Windows recovery disc on a CD.
I cloned the HDD onto my SSD using EaseUS software and told it to make it bootable. It didn't for me, so I blamed the software.
I then used Acronis True Image to make a bootable copy of my setup on a USB drive. I turned the computer on with just the (blank) SSD and tried to load the USB. The computer refuses to recognize the bootable copy point blank. Just brings me back to a screen asking me which drive I want to boot from repeatedly.
Alright then, I said, clone the HDD onto the SSD and then try the USB bootable. Did that, but it made no impact. Same problem as above.
Okay, let's try a fresh install on the SSD by using the recovery disc. This is when the real fun happens. I get to the Lenovo-themed System Recovery menu, and I click Next. Then I get an alert box saying "This version of System Recovery Options is not compatible with the version of Windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of Windows." What? I only made it this morning. I don't think there has been any major updates to Windows since then! (Just in case, I made an even newer recovery disc tonight. I got the same error.)
I then cleared the SSD and tried the recovery disc on the clean SSD. Same error again. The recovery discs aren't working, the system is not recognizing the USB copy, and the cloned (and supposedly boot-ready) SSD won't boot.
What's going on? All I am trying to do is replace my HDD with my SSD, and run Windows 7. I didn't think it would be this hard
Some extra points:
- I am inserting the drives. The computer can read that it's a Samsung 840 series SSD.
- There is no problem with the USB. My desktop can read it just fine, and sees that there is 29GB of stuff there.
- I have changed the boot order in the BIOS to load the USB (or CD) drive first.
- I have disabled the secure startup option in the BIOS.
- I have tried Legacy, UEFI, mixture of both, etc etc.
- Yes, it's a legit copy of Windows. It came with the computer a week ago. There is maybe an issue that I'm looking to reinstall Windows 7 onto the SSD, but the only recovery discs that come with the computer are Windows 8... but then how do I get Win 7 onto my SSD?
- I have searched the forums. None of the suggested solutions (mostly listed above) have worked.
Any help would be much appreciated, folks.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

I had one extra hiccup. The Windows 7 disc could not locate the activation/product key on the BIOS. Neither could any of the semi-questionable programs that I downloaded. So I could not authorize Windows 7.
I called Lenovo. They said it was my fault for using Windows recovery discs instead of Lenovo recovery discs. (Heaven forbid! It really should not matter. It is a terrible approach on the part of Lenovo that their initial recovery discs gave me an error about licensing, but yet they seemingly don't support the stock Windows recovery discs.) Anyway, after I told the agent - in my polite way - that this was a ridiculous scenario, she offered to send me out Lenovo recovery discs.
I accepted. They arrived today. I reinstalled Windows, and now everything is running just fine.
In case anyone in the future reads this thread: ask Lenovo to send you out Win 7 Pro recovery discs, and use them after you install the SSD. It makes the process much easier.

• Virtualization in T430s Windows 8.1

My T430s has been enabled virtualization in BIOS, and I have updated BIOS in newest version of 2.62.

but after I wake up laptop from sleep, Virtualization conditions change to "No", and I'm unable use VMware Workstaion for making VM.

After I reboot, they back to normal mode, and every laptop sleeping, this situation repeats.
I don't know whether it is because of Windows 8.1 or not, with my HP Laptop, I did not meet this state.
Thanks

• T430s Windows 7 not genuine

Hello
I have bought a Lenovo T430s, its type 2355-CTO, it is still in the warranty (already checked this), and for the last 20 days I get "Windows is not genuine". It run perfectly in past 4 months, but suddenly (I guess a Win update) starts to show me this message.
I don't have a Win Product Key on my battery, I called Lenovo and they told me that my laptop is with pre-manufactured Win and the key is embedded. I tried all the fixes I could from Lenovo boot console but none worked.
I don't want to reset the hdd to factory setting (the only option left) as I have a lot of data on my HDD plus other SW installed from the company network.
Isn't there a fix or something?
Thank you in advance

• Fingerprint reader stopped working - T430s, Windows 8.1

I can no longer use or enroll finger prints on my T430s laptop running Windows 8.1!
ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software is 6.0.0.8102.
Sensor: TouchChip Fingerprint Coprocessor (WBF advanced mode). Driver version: 1.6.2.352.
Symptom: when trying to enroll a fingerprint, I get the message: 'Use a longer stroke when scanning your fingerprint,' the sensor light turns from green to blinking orange (3 times), then back to green. Same happens when when trying to enroll from Windows PC Setting/ Sign-in Options/ Fingerprint (Add).
What I tried: uninstalling ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software and Driver (to include selecting 'Delete the driver software for this device'), rebooting, using Lenovo System Update to re-install ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software, rebooting. Have also tried to manually install previous versions of the Fingerprint Software to no avail.
Note: I had this similar problem in the past, since upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1, but the steps above usually resolved it.
Has anybody encountered this issue? Any ideas for a solution?
Many thanks!

• T430s Windows 8 battery life

Hello,
I have new Lenovo laptop, type T430s (2353-2QV). I was realized to try Windows 8 and reinstalled it using lenovo w8 drivers. But something is wrong with battery life. It is very weak. I was hope that I can use my laptop on battery more than 4 hours, but depens on usage, I can use it maximum for about 3 hours. And that is not right, from my point of view. I do not have informatiom how much time is battery life on W7, but I think it is much better.
Please, can anybody  tell me if it is right or not and what I can do with it? I welcome the response not only from users with same type of laptop.
Thank you in advance.

Hello dissss,
thank you for your reply.
I have the six cell battery. After one week of using my laptop on W8 I have to say that normally I can work about 3 hours on battery, which is weak for this professional laptop.

• T430 windows 8 clean install & what utilities?

Hi,
I am going to install a new SSD into my 430 and was thinking about going to Windows 8.  Any pointers for the upgrade?
Also what Lenovo utilites are a must that you remommend?  Some seem like bloatware to me, but I have not used this machine long enought to evaluate that.
I would apprecate any input.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Warder,
Welcome to Lenovo Community!
We understood that your query is about to know the details on driver to be installed after reinstalling the Windows 8 OS to SSD drive. And there is no other option to upgrade, you have to perform clean installation of OS after replacing the drive.
To know which all the driver needs to be install, I suggest you to check with Device Manager option first. In that we can you have to check in which adapter it is showing yellow mark. And depending upon that we can download the driver and install it.
As per the Lenovo we request you to download and install all the latest drivers from the link and including supported application like Power manager, Access communication & Think Vantage application.
Below is the link to enter the downloads page and download application accordingly, please click on "Select Product" then in "QUICK PATH" enter the MTM no. select the exact model.
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page#
Hope this helps. Do post back if issue persists!

• Periodic freeze (but doesn't crash) on T430 Windows 7 x64

Hi, I am recently experiencing periodic freeze on my T430 which is only a month and a half old. When it freeze, the screen doesn't change, moving the mouse doesn't change anything instantly, the hard disk light is kept on (which indicates something is accessing the hard disk heavily). The situation usually lasts for 5 to 10 seconds, after that the operation seems to be normal again.
I don't know what will reproduce this situation, but as far as I remember I should be using Chrome every time this happens. I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed. I have the newest drivers and BIOS installed. The hard disk check under Lenovo Diagnostics in BIOS shows good. I also have APS installed so I shouldn't receive damage to my hard disk. (??)
This is really annoying because it appears randomly at random intervals, lasts for random time length and happens in random situation that disturbs me very much. Does anyone has any clue or happens to have this issue also?

Thanks for your suggestion, but I believe Microsoft Security Essentials is enough for preventing malwares. Also I never run unknown programs, I keep my system secure and I am virtually a computer geek (believe it or not). I don't trust antivirus other than the famous paid ones and Microsoft Security Essentials.
Sometimes the hard disk is very active and by checking Resource Monitor it is `msmpeng.exe`, which is something about Microsoft Security Essentials. It's only performing a scan. I don't really know if it causes the heavy hard disk load because there's no way for me to check. Nothing suspicious come up in Event Viewer.
I am thinking that the APS could actually cause the problem because I set it to the most sensitive. I just reduced the sensitivity to see if anything is improved.

1. Leave the machine idle, let it go sleep (I did not customize the system power settings so far)
2. Wake the system up
3. Black screen for a while, then system restarted
4. Check c:\windows\memory.dmp
