Nvidia 257.21 64bit whql driver vs old 197.75 bugs and improvments.

I am testing this new driver on my system ( CS5 on Core i7 860, 8Gb mem, Win7 64Bit Pro and nvidia GTX480.) And experiance following problems. When using "fast blur in/ out as transition i get a strange "rollo curtain effect" Blacking out the image from right to the left side!
This only occurs with the new driver 257.21 and mercury engine turn on.

Here's a nice overview that someone did about PP CS5 and various nVidia cards and drivers. Note the recent edits concerning the 257.xx series drivers. A couple of words of caution on upgrading nVidia drivers (even WHQL) when they are released. First, nVidia's consumer cards and drivers are geared towards people playing video games and most of the improvements and bug fixes are timed with the release of new game titles. nVidia has a page on it's support website to report bugs, but I suspect that very few people using Premiere are likely to take the time to submit a bug report. If you're using an  Quadro card and driver, you are far more likely to be safe in upgrading with a new WHQL driver.
Second, nVidia's driver installer package is notoriously, not very careful about removing all traces of previous drivers. Thus, sometimes, people accidently  end up with a "hybrid" driver that is a combination of the new and the old. This is major reason for BSODs, etc.. If you visit gaming hardware sites like Guru of 3D, they suggest that you, uninstall the old driver, use a utility like Driver Sweeper that cleans up remnants of the old driver in the Windows registry, reboot and then install the new driver.
Wow! Is that all worth it? My suggestion (like Harm's) is if you're not having problems with the present video driver, don't install a new driver, just to see what might happen. I'm presently running 257.21 with a GTX 275 and I haven't seen any problems with CS5, but that's just my limited experience. The 257.xx drivers actually corrected an OpenGL problem in Magic Bullet Looks. I suspect that was just by coincidence, since a number of video games also use OpenGL.

  • P100-240: Toshiba GPU driver is old, Nvidia driver doesn't enable the fan?

    Hi,
I was wondering if Toshiba could explain their choice here.
My laptop recently got sent in for repair because it burnt itself out due to me using Nvidias own drivers on my p100-240 (pspa3e).
    The problem here is that:
    a) Toshibas drivers for this card are well over a year old and sometimes buggy in new games
    b) Toshiba does not seem to have followed the Nvidia spec (that or there is a major ACPI issue in their bios...)
so, Upon using the Nvidia drivers the laptops fan does not kick in, sending the systems temporature up to 106cand finally turning it off. It turned back on but basic graphics acceleration then failed to work.
SO, can we get an updated driver build? OR some kind of fan control app? or can you update your bios to enable nvidias drivers to function?
I feel like I cannot use my laptop for its purpose at the moment- I have reverted to installing a non-ACPI pc driver to force the fans to stay on which works well but then basic system functions like turn off do not work.
I have also been advised that this design flaw could be considered to make the system "not fit for purpose" under which case I could just return the laptop under the Sale of Goods act.
Though really, i'd just like to get my system working properly. It's bad enough not being able to run Linux on it, but even worse that windows doesnt work properly with it with official drivers.
One final question: Can I get the older BIOSes? several fixes work with them but not with the 4.0 bios (mainly linux fixes but as long as one OS works I don't care!)
Any tips on this are also welcome! Thanks for your help. :-)

    Hi
    >was wondering if Toshiba could explain their choice here.
If you want to hear anything from Toshiba then you have to contact them. This forum is only a user to user forum and unfortunately you will not find anyone from Toshiba here.
    But maybe you want to hear my opinion;
    >My laptop recently got sent in for repair because it burnt itself out due to me using Nvidias own drivers on my p100-240 (pspa3e).
    >a) Toshibas drivers for this card are well over a year old and sometimes buggy in new games
Well, many Toshiba notebooks are delivered and equipped with the same graphic cards. Maybe you have to look in other notebook series which are delivered with the same card for a newer GPU driver.
But, you are right and generally the Toshiba graphic drivers are a little bit older as the original one from GPU manufacturer.
Why? First of all the nVidia or ATI original drivers are not designed for the notebook usage. These are drivers for desktop PC graphic cards. I visited the area for mobile drivers and found a info that I have to look on the notebook manufacturer site!!! This said everything!!!!
    >b) Toshiba does not seem to have followed the Nvidia spec (that or there is a major ACPI issue in their bios...)
As mentioned above the original GPU drivers are not designed for the notebook usage.
Why? Because the notebook GPUs cannot be cooled like the graphic cards for the desktop PC!!!
The Toshiba own drivers support an overheating protection which helps to avoid an GPU damage!!!!
The original nVidia or ATI drivers do not support such overheating protection!!!
If you want to use such drivers, you can do this ONLY at your own risk!
    >Can I get the older BIOSes?
It seems Toshiba page provides only the newest BIOS. Maybe the authorized service provider can help you and could send you an older BIOS version.
Two years ago I contacted the ASP in my country and got a early version of my BIOS for the A50

  • Photoshop CC not detect nVidia GeForce GTX 680 after driver upgrade (Windows 8 64-bit)

i just upgraded the driver for my nVidia GeForce 680 graphics card from the nVidia website. the specifications are shown below.  Photoshop CC now says that it can't detect my graphics card. does anyone know the solution to this problem?
    nVidia verstion 327.23 WHQL
    release date: Sept 9, 2013
    operating system: windows 8 64-bit
will adobe have to issue an update to photoshop CC to fix the problem?

    hey chris,
thx for relplying. i appreciat it. here is what happened. i did an update through microsoft and downloaded a driver for nVidia. somehow that download caused PS CC to stop recognizing my GTX 680. i'm not sure why. subsequent to that, i went to nVidia's website and downloaded the current driver. i still found that PS CC didn't "see" my graphics card. that is when i wrote this post. after i posted this i rebooted my computer and found that everything now works fine. PS CC now recognizes my GeForce GTX 680 with no problems.

    Finally!
Probably our efforts writing nVidia, letting them know, counted.
Installation worked fine for me as well - W7 Ultimate from scratch etc / I'm not using their system anymore, I just installed the new driver from over the existent driver (the old one still available on Toshiba website, but clean at least :P).
Looking forward to knowing how it's working guys!
I noticed that the movement is smoother now...

  • Nvidia GeForce4 440 Go Display driver wanted for Satellite 5105-S901 !

    Dear all,
I have Toshiva Satellite 5105-S901 and experiencing some proplems with running latest games, perhaps because of pretty old Nvidia GeForce4 440 Go Display driver. Laptop has been bought in 2002, and since then video-drivers were not updated.
So, where can I get them?
Nvidia does not provide drivers for Go chipsets and send customers to manufacturers. But on tosiba.com I found drivers that were placed there exactly in 2002. My laptop already has these.
But where to get the new ones?
I don't believe that there in no driver-update heas been done by Toshiba for three years for Nvidia GeForce4 440 Go Display driver.
    Well, need some advice.
    Sincerely your's
    Alex.
    P.S.:Laptop still has good perfomance(P4-2Hz,2gb RAM,64Mb Video).

    Hi Alexei,
I had problems with my ATI Radeon graphics not working an some games, so I contacted the TDK technical support guys who suggested I should use the latest drivers from http://www.omegadrivers.net/.
Sadly I could not get the ATI drivers to load on my notebook but perhaps you will have more luck with the NVIDIA ones.
I agree with you that it is a great shame that Toshiba do not update their graphics drivers.

  • Reset NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics driver

How can I reset my NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics driver in my MBP 2.2 GHz, 2 Gb RAM, Mac OS X 10.7.2?  When I start it up, white screen appears OK, but when the login window should appear, the screen goes black, and I need to connect my external monitor (Apple Cinema Display 23-inch DVI) to see the image.  When I finally log in, and I go to the System Preferences panel and try to detect my MBP display, it seems that it does not exist.
I have tried everything: resetting PRAM, fixing permissions, etc, but nothing happens. I even formatted the HD, and tried to reinstall OS X Lion, and in this case, both monitors work as mirrors (weird, eh?).  As it did not work, I tried to install the original OSX that the installation disks have, but starting the installation process from the disk did not work, because the video is scrambled (weirder!). So it is not a hardware problem, and I think the NVIDIA drivers are corrupt, but I don't know how to fix this problem.  Can anybody help?  Thanks in advance

    Hi
Are you getting the MacBook Pro repaired ?

  • Old MacBook Pro slow and hangs frequently, hard drive problems?

    Hi,
I have an old Macbook Pro (one of the originals, from about 4 1/2 years ago). Recently I've been noticing that it runs really slow, especially when its been running for a while and there are multiple programs open. It will take a long time to switch between windows, opening a tab in Safari will usually cause a spinning beach ball for 10-15 seconds and Safari crashes frequently. Other programs have similar problems, but don't normally crash. It's running Snow Leopard and has 1GB of RAM. Obviously I expect it to be slower with lots of stuff open, but my usage patterns haven't changed and its performance certainly has. The harddrive always seems to be being accessed when I have these problems.
The hard drive S.M.A.R.T. status is "verified," and I ran the Apple Hardware Test and it came out fine. But I'm still really worried that something could be going wrong, especially with the hard drive and since I am going away in a few weeks to work on a project and will be away from my backup drive I really want to make sure any problem is taken care of beforehand.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be the the problem or about anything I should try?
    Much Thanks.

With lots of concurrent processes and insufficient memory you will experience slow performance and beachballing. This is because the OS is forced to use the hard drive to replace the non-existent physical RAM. See the following:
About OS X Memory Management and Usage
Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor
Memory Management in Mac OS X
Performance Guidelines- Memory Management in Mac OS X
A detailed look at memory usage in OS X
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Also, a small hard drive with too little free space and a system lacking in any regular maintenance can also lead to slow performance. See the following:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Backuplist
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    iBackup
    JaBack
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    ynchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
This should give you a few things to start sorting things out and getting better performance from your computer within its limitations.
If you have a Core Duo model then 2 GBs is the maximum RAM you can install. If you have a Core 2 Duo model then you can install up to 4 GBs but they system will only make use of 3 GBs. As for the hard drive it can be replaced. Notebook drives in the 250 to 500 GB - 7200 RPM range are relatively inexpensive. Visit OWC for pricing on drives and RAM. Visit Data Mem for pricing on RAM.

  • Win 7 x64 printer driver for old HP LaserJet 5si

OK, I know everyone's dealt with one of these along the line, and I thought I had these dang printers figured out completely, but this one is a flat out freak, and anyone who can help, I appreciate it.  Working in an environment with several new Dell
Desktops (Precision T3500s) with Win7 x64 installed on them.  They have an old HP LaserJet 5si on the network.  Several of the Win7 computers on the network are already connected to it by the private IP,  and they work.  I just installed
a new client, and trying to install to the printer by IP, can't find the driver.  Look on HP's site for Win7 x64, and they say "it's already installed on Win7, we're not giving you a driver".  Well, it's not installed on Win7 x64, not when I try
to navigate to it when installing the printer, there is no "LaserJet 5si" listed.  Weird thing is, when I look at the other computers, and RE-Install that same printer, I CAN find the "LaserJet 5si" printer listed.  OK, so I must not have all
the updates on my new computer, right?  YES I DO, WINDOWS UPDATE TELLS ME IT'S ALL UP TO DATE.  WTF???  Thanks in advance.

OK, I figured it out FINALLY.  The problem was with the "Windows Update" feature within the "Install Printer" wizard.  A folder called "Software Distribution" on the root of C: was causing the trouble.  Found this fix, the Windows Update feature
then worked, then the correct driver installed.  Dang there's 6 hours of work...hope this helps someone avoid the trouble.
These steps did resolve the issue:
    1. Open Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del)
    2. Click Sevices Tab and then Services Button (Bottom Right)
    3. Under Name find "Windows Update"
    4. Right click "Windows Update" and select Stop. do not close
    5. Open Window Exploper and browse to C:\Windows
    6. Delete the Folder "SoftwareDistribution"
    7. Go back to Servies, Right click "Windows Update" and select Start
After this, do your usual routine to install the printer, and select "Windows Update" to find driver (it shouldn't fail now), and afterwards, you should be able to find the correct (in this case LaserJet 5si) driver. Yay!

  • Windows 7 64bit Raid 1 Data Storage setup with UEFI and 6TB drives

i just bought a GigaByte MB with UEFI bios, 1 SSD 128GB drive for the OS (boot up), and 2 6TB drives for use in a raid 1 setup for the data storage.
I have been able to install win 7 64bit using the UEFI dvd drive.  I have been able to define the 6TB mirror via the bios (under the Intel Rapid Storage Technology option) .  But when ever i go into windows, and check under Disk Management, i don't
see the raid 1, i see two drives listed for the data, each at 1492 GB.   I should be seeing 1 drive at 5.4TB.
note: I have tried re-installing win7 64bit many times to see if i have missed something.   When i run setup off uefi dvd drive, i see that drive 1 (of what should be part of the mirror) and drive 2 are listed there at the reported 1492 GB size each.
So it seems that win7 doesn't see that mirror that i created via the bios. So is this a bios setting problem somewhere?   i presume on this screen i should see the correct mirror size already.
Also, do i need to install win7 via the uefi dvd if  i don't want to boot off those large drives (i just want to boot off the ssd. But when i did try that using a legacy mode, i couldn't later try to create a single large drive for the mirror using
GPT formatting.  it just wasn't an option.  although the mirror was recognized as 1 drive, but broken into 2TB and 3TB.)
what could i possibly be doing wrong??
    Thanks for any help

Thank You Roger.   I did call Gigabyte.   This is how i solved it with the gigabyte support team.
    1.   Don't try installing Win7 64bit sp1 and setup RAID at the same time.  (even go ahead and unplug those raid drives if you have it plugged in).   The OS should be installed first on the boot drive, but make sure the BIOS is already set
to RAID (not AHCI.  If you already installed OS under AHCI, you need to reinstall OS.  i find this crazy because what if you decide to install raid down the road.. to an existing machine.. you can't do that because of this).     Make sure
to install OS with the UEFI dvd drive option (i had done this).
    2. Once the OS is installed, install all drivers that come for the Motherboard... That should include intel Raid drivers. (note gigabyte support didn't tell me to do this, but i didn't want to take a chance to have to reinstall OS again or have more problems,
    but it makes sense.)
    3. Now i have the GA-H97-Gaming 3 mother board, it had Bios F3.  I upgraded it to F5 as per support tech.
    4. turn off machine, and replug in the two 6TB drives.
    5. after reboot, i find out that i no longer see Intel RAPID Storage Technology. (this should have displayed when i set the SATA Mode Selection to RAID before i started all this business... it did under bios F3, but not under F5.. bug??  i think so,
so i plan on letting gigabyte know about this).  This is a problem.  In Intel RAPID Storage Technology is where you define the RAID in the first place.    OK, well after several reboots.. i tried to use CTRL-I to get to intel's interface
rather than that of the gigabyte bios.   Voila... i define the Mirror...
    6. I am able to boot into OS.   I got to Drive Management.  I now see 1 6TB drive.  I initialize it of course using GPT.  Format it.  All all looks good now.
Hope this helps someone.. took me enough tries to get it right.   I really am bothered about requiring the OS installed in the correct SATA mode just to get RAID working.  As i mentioned, you can't change your mind afterwards without reinstalling
OS.   Also i couldn't even get the OS setup to start when i had those raid drives plugged in.. so make sure to unplug them.
    Best Regards.

how do i recover music from old computer. its broken and i did not have the music backed up on any other hard drive.

OK, well, seems like you need to lose the attitude if you really want help.
There are several ways to get music from iTunes on your computer to your device.
The easiest is to sync directly with iTunes by connecting your device to your computer, selecting the device, setting up your Profile pages, and then clicking the Sync button to sync.
First you want to open iTunes and under Preferences>Devices, make sure that you are not syncing automatically:
Make sure that box is checked.
Then follow the instructions in the article below for either your computer or your Mac to set up your Profile pages and to sync your music via iTunes:
    WINDOWS IOS SYNC ITUNES 11
iTunes 11 for Mac: Set up syncing for iPod, iPhone, or iPad
You can also directly download music from iTunes to your device by going to the iTunes icon, going to "Purchased", and selecting the items that are not on your device that show a little cloud next to them. Click on the cloud and the music will download.
You might also want to familiarize yourself with your iPhone 5 manual. It has all the answers you cannot find on Google or by trying to just do it by brute force. If you would take a little time to read about your device and how to use it, you might not be so frustruated and unnecessarily snarky to people who are trying to help:
