Nvidia-325.15-1 breaks backlight dimming

Hi everybody,
after installing the new nvidia-driver, my backlight dimming doesn't work anymore. I had to roll back to 319.32 to make it work again.
Anybody else experiencing this?
My Laptop:
Model: Vostro 3300
GPU: Geforce 310M
Kernel: 3.10.5-1-ARCH

Yes, I have noticed the same after upgrading to 325.15.
Backlight dimming from within E17 does not work anymore.
Another phenomena is that "tooltips" (in e.g. for networkmanager and nvidia tools) shows up as black on black.
Same deal with xfce4-terminal as a whole.
Tested rolling back to 319.32 and all works fine again. But this is obviously not a good solution so I'm up on 325.15-2 again.
Toshiba Satellite L750
Geforce 525M
Kernel 3.10.6-2
WM Enlightenment
(The special keys for backlight has never worked but that's a different problem not related).

  • IPhone 6 backlight dims while watching video

If I watch a video that is first dark and then brights up, and I watch it (landscape video) in portrait mode, backlight is slightly dimming to brighter while video gets brighter. Is this a some kind of feature or a bug?
I have the automatic brightness control turned off.

I took a video of the bug, find it here (sorry for bad quality): https://www.icloud.com/photostream/#A2G6XBubb48Hy
It happens also if automatic brightness control is on.

  • Dimdaemon - A simple backlight-dimming daemon for laptops

I wrote a simple and lightweight daemon that dims the backlight of our laptop and, in case, completely turn off it, after a given amount of time.
I don't have time to put the project on a service like sourceforge, github, etc...so I opened this thread.
If you have questions, doubts or if you simply want to report a bug or a feature request, please write here.
You can find the PKGBUILD on AUR here https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=54009
So here is a summary of the configuration values :
    environnement
userhome : well, the path to your home (only used to connect to eat your magic cookies connect to X)
    displayname : choose in
    /sys/class/backlight/
powersupplyname : choose a battery in
    /sys/class/power_supply/
relative :  set to true if you want that dimdaemon dinamically dims your screen brightness; obviously undimpercent will not be used.
    ac or battery
active : whether the dimdeamon will change the backlight when the computer is in this mode
undimpercent : brightness when user is active
dimtime : time before the screen gets dimmed if the comp is idle (0 will not disable this)
    dimpercent : brightness when idle
turnofftime : time before turning the screen off.
0 will not disable, set big value instead. If it is less than dimtime, will act as if it is equal to it.
    Regards

    nierro wrote:Hi!
I found your project quite interesting! Well, how did you managed to stop it while e.g. watching a movie? It is the first daemon that does such a thing!
Hi, the daemon "stops" because uses Xlib to know the idle time. A lot of media players (e.g. mplayer) send a "fake" mouse/keyboard event every n seconds, so the idle time resets.
nierro wrote:Btw I'm using calise (from aur) to adjust my screen brightness, so i'd like, for example, that "undimpercent" could be commented, so it won't affect the screen brightness calise set previously. I tried to comment it, but it seems it will set screen brightness at 100% anyway (as default option).
I'm really interested in "dimtime" and "turnofftime" option, because i'm using xfce4 without power manager, so i lack of those features.
So, what i'd like to see implemented (i'm only asking, obviously), it's :
    - If "undimpercent" is not set, leave screen brightness as it is.
    - "dimpercent" could be the percentage of the previous brightness (and not an absolute value, eg: if my calise, or "undimpercent" set screen brig, to 5, and "dimpercent" is set to 20, it should not set the screen brightness to 2, but to 1).
Tell me if i'm asking anything wrong, or if i misunderstood anything please.
By the way, thanks for this software
I could implement what you are suggesting but, what would be the behavior of the daemon when on battery? I mean, the daemon could read the actual brightness value but then, when switching to battery, what value should set? A percentage of the actual brightness?
No question is wrong a priori, we should just clarify some aspects; I'm glad that this piece of code could be useful to someone!

  • Problem with nVidia 325.15-1

After the last upgrade of the nvidia driver at every boot, my system freeze after, about a minute. I've tried with kernel-lts too but no luck.
I've downgraded the driver and everything is ok. Nouveau, exept for performance and temperatures issues, works well.
My card is a nVidia GeForce 9200 and I've never had problems before with proprietary or open nvidia driver.
    Any suggestion?
I can give every other info that could help.
    Thanks in advance

Castore wrote:Thanks but, my modprobe file is empty, what can I do?
Well, if you don't have a file named /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf on your system, then just create one yourself. I have created a new file named /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf on my system (the details about module configuration are described here in great detail) with just the following content:
    blacklist nouveau
    options nvidia NVreg_EnableMSI=0
The blacklist nouveau statement is necessary on my system because otherwise the kernel will pick up the nouveau module on the next reboot making it impossible for the nvidia module to take over control -- I don't know why that happens as the /usr/lib/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf file that is installed by the nvidia package should prevent that, but it was necessary on my system anyway.
Once you have created that file, reboot so the change can take effect.  You can check if the nvidia.conf configuration file has made any difference by typing
    cat /proc/interrupts | grep -i nvidia
If the fourth column of the output does not read PCI-MSI-edge but something else -- in my case it reads IO-APIC-fasteoi -- then it has worked.

Just got my Pre 2 (Rogers).  I also have the original Pre (Bell Mobility).
When I'm in a completely dark room and slide open the Pre 2's keyboard, I notice that the backlighting is:
Not as bright and clear as the original Pre and
The "E", "F" and "G" keys are brighter than the others.

The backlighting on the original Pre is very bright and clear and uniformly lit.
    Thank you.

I have noticed that after using my iPhone 6 for a prolonged period of time the screen will dim on its own. I have the brightness set to max and Auto-Brightness turned off. I'm not sure if this is an iOS 8 issue or a Hardware issue, I did notice that this happens after the phone starts to get warm after about 20 minutes of usage.

TThis is happening to me, too. About 5 minutes into reading an article on Safari my new iPhone 6 will suddenly dim by about 10%. Like the previous poster, I've got my brightness set to 100% and Ato-Brightness off. When my screen suddenly dims, I check the Brightness and it still is set at 100%.
Do others have this issue?  Is it an iPhone 6 issue?  Another iOS 8.0.2 bug?
    Help!  It's t totally annoying.

I have a GeForce 970, I am using GRUB with GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep, and my kernel is booting into 1920x1200 mode. Since upgrading to NVIDIA 346.35-3 my TTY consoles all become garbled and unreadable once X has started, but they are unaffected before X starts.
Downgrading to NVIDIA 343.36-6 solves this issue. There isn't any output in the journal. When I switch to a TTY, my monitor reports that it's in 640x480 mode.

Slide the Hold switch to HOLD and back again. Press the

I think the relevant message read "GPU fell off the bus", which I think indicates a crash of the GPU driver.
After rolling back to 3.9.9, the issue is gone.
My xorg.conf (and xorg.conf.d) does not contain anything special (only a DPI fix). I tried removing it, but the issue is still there.
EDIT: I seem to be unable to get a kernel log for these sessions.
Journalctl simply does not show the failing session.
I don't know why I did get a log before. It happened on a linux-ck build with a couple of modifications, a while back (and the logs seem to be gone).
I'll try again later, making sure I sync.

  • Xorg segmentation fault / nvidia proprietary blob

    Hi!
I've been experiencing this issue with xorg crashing leaving the system completely unresponsive and with completely black screen. It appears to happen at random times and not consistently at all. It occurred for the first time several days ago. Unfortunately I'm not in a good position to track what may have caused this because I did pretty massive update 2-3 weeks ago. Since then I've been updating pretty regularly.
    Here are some xorg logs.
    It's pretty much full with:
(EE) [mi] EQ overflowing. Additional events will be discarded until existing events are processed.

I'm not really sure whether this is separate issue or not but I thought I should include it here. I don't really know what this is about but I've seen "kwin effects restarted" KDE messages occurring at these times too. I'm not sure how related this may be but I'm seeing lots of artifacts on rendered pages when using chromium browser. Nothing of these used to happen before I went and updated the system. Everything was rock solid for me.

I'm not sure what is supposed to happen after xorg crashes and whether it's being restarted but everything related to xorg is unresponsive. The system otherwise is running fine but I haven't been able to find a solution to recover from this other than cold restart. I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the keyboard for instance and it's being registered(probably udev is responsible for this) but it's still "dead".
Is it nvidia's fault or something else may be going on? I know you can't really do much dealing with the binary blob. I haven't given nouveau a chance for a long time but I may try this in the future if it helps with something tracking this. I'm using nvidia 325.15-10 package from the official repos for now and the card is gtx 570 fermi. xorg is the latest one in the repos.
I'm not sure what driver version this package is based on(325.15 I guess). On the nvidia site the newest ones are 331.13 beta and 319.60. I can try them but I'm not even sure whether there are some patches needed to make them work with the newest kernels. At least I hope someone could provide more info on this because it seems interesting.
I'll gladly provide more info if needed. I just don't know what more could be useful.
    Thanks!

    saty,
Is this continuing to happen for you? I am experiencing the same issue with version 325. I downgraded from 331 because there were some major bugs in that version. Have you found any solution?

  • Screen brightness and auto dim

    Hello everyone,
I'm just wondering why the screenbrightness gets reduced in dark surroundings with turned on auto dim even more than it is manually possible.
I would like to turn auto dim off and only control the brightness with the manual control but this does not let me reduce screenbrightness enough.
Does anyone have a good suggestion?

Thanks for your reply. But that's not exactly what I was looking for.
There is a big difference in how dark the display can be set when using the automatic backlight dimming. When turned on the screen can get to a very low brightness at night. It is not possible to achieve the same low brightness with automatic backlight dimming turned off.
I suppose that this might only be possible with a software change.

  • New Feature: Backlight reactivated with a push to the screen.

After a speedy replacement of my old nano (half a broken screen); I received what looks like a brand new nano. Unfortunately, after taking the nano of hold the backlight didn't come on. I checked all the settings and was able to play songs. I decided to gently push the screen and was surprised to see the backlight come on as if the screen was a button itself. It has continued to do this all day. Once the backlight dims to the dark screen the only way to revive the backlight is to push the screen itself...
I'm guessing this isn’t normal but I thought I'd ask before I requested for another one.
    Thanks

yeah, definately not normal. It should work just like a regular iPod. Turn it on and the backlight comes on. pushing the screen should effect the backlight unless there is a loose connection somewhere inside.

  • HT1338 While using Word or reading a PDF from a downloaded file, my computer falls "asleep" - backlight fades in and out.  I tried adjusting energy saver but it didn't help.

My backlight dims as if sleeping while I am using my laptop, typing in word, reading a PDF, as I am typing right now.  I tap on the light button to restore but it only temporarily does so.  I have tried "energy saver" but have not been able to wake it up.  Otherwise, it responds.

    Reset the SMC.
