NVidia 6800 Ultra working temperatures?

Hi,
I've upgraded my Powermac from ATI 9650 to nVidia 6800 Ultra.
Temperature Monitor displays that the card's chip is 67 degrees Celsius hot,
under normal conditions, simple work in finder, no GPU-intensive
stuff. Just want to know if this is OK? What are your experiences
with this card, any problems with overheating?
Thanks,
Michal

If you can afford the 6800...buy it..it rocks...if not..the ti-4200 is what I ran before..and in every test it outran all the FX cards, with the exception of the 5900 and the 5950...less vid effects..but a much more stable and solid performer for me.
had much better benchmarks..and there was a 20 fps difference in Doom3, from the FX 5500 to the Ti-4200..with the Ti, easily whippin the pants off the FX card.
Hi,
You don't have MSI mainboard anymore? You have Echostar?
Latest bios is not always BEST for system you have......... 3.9 and 3.A slows more system down...........
Anyway:-
My old FX5200, does what I need. Plays all games, including the Doom3 & HL2. Plays Blitzkrieg better than 9000 pro....

  • Will the XFX Geforce 6800 Ultra work with G5 Mac

I have the standard NVidia Geforce 6800 Ultra AGP card working in my G5 2.7DP, and have been given an XFX version of the card.
But the literature that comes with the XFX suggests it's for Windows, not Mac. Will it work in my Mac? If so, I'll keep it for a backup; if not, it's no use to me.
Description of card is XFX Geforce 6800 Ultra 256Mb DDR3 AGP8x Dual DVI TVout.

    It won't work as is.
If you have the right ROM chip on it, you can put it into a Windows machine and flash it with a modified Mac ROM. If all is right and goes well, then it would work in a Mac.
Otherwise, as you put it, it is of "no use" to you.

  • Hardware Test: Video Ram "error code 2NVD/1/4:119" G5 2.7 NVIDIA 6800 Ultra

Wondering if anyone has experienced this . . .
My G5 started displaying rows of chevron shaped artifacts a few weeks after upgrading to Leopard, Bought a used replacent card and it seemed to fix the problem for a couple of weeks then too started displaying the artifacts, ran the Hardware Test on both cards and both had Video Ram error code 2NVD/1/4:2119
I'am reluctant to buy yet another card untill I'am sure its not a Leopard Issue. any ideas?

I need to do more troubleshooting of my problem before I trying to reflash I think . . .
    the other day I had a friend install both my original card and the newly purchased "used" card in his G5 and he also got the error codes on both of them. Brought them home installed the replacement card reset the SMU and PRAM as I've done many times before and got the G5 up and running (after several reboots) no artifacts seemed to run perfectly for a couple of hours anyway when I tried restarting and then the problems returned, gets to the grey screen with the rows of artifacts then stops, screen goes black then the fans start slowly spooling up to max RPM (most likley from a kernel panic) logs show;
    "Apparent UniNorth Hang: AGP Status"

  • Will this card work? - Nvidia Geforce 6800 ULTRA 256MB VRAM AGP Video Card

I posted a question about getting the maximum resolution from an Apple 30 inch Cinema Display and another card, which didn't work.
The replies were fast here in the forum and quite correct.
My next question is regarding the Nvidia Geforce 6800 ULTRA 256MB VRAM AGP Video Card.
I have an AGP card with an ATi Radeon 9600 Pro card that can't power the 30 inch because it's only 64MB and no DVI output.
I'm wondering whether this card will give me the maximum resolution?
    Thanks again.

    Hi Japamac-
    Thanks for the quick reply.
My System Profiler indicates a ATI Radeon 9600 Pro, but it doesn't have the Dual Link since this is an older G5 with only 64MB of VRAM.
The GeForce 6800 is a refurb, but is Mac compatible.
I'm hoping that it will work, but since it won't be returnable, I don't want to spend the money needlessly.
I did order another card that the Apple support suggested should be compatible, but turned out that they sent me the PC version.
I've spoken to Apple as well and get conflicting info.
It boils down to the fact that this is a G5 with a late 2004 date.
It is fast enough for me and my only hang up is that I'm only getting 12980X800 resolution.
I'm not using it for gaming or graphics processing.

  • Fx-6800 Ultra Temperature Issue

I recently purchased a 6800 Ultra 256 Mb card from Msi , it works fine ,But the thing i have noticed is that the temperature reaches 72C while playing games like doom 3 or Star Wars Battlefront , and when i dont play games and just listen to music or browse the internet it stays at about 55C .
I have 3 fans inside the case , And also a 400Watt power supply , Another reason might be that in Pakistan the temperature are a little hot , But i always turn on the Air conditioner when playing games .
Do you guys have a solution to this problem , I also tried Installing a 450W power supply but the temperature remains the same.
Also please also tell me how do i increase the speed of the fan on the card , i read in the forums that there is a slider on the card which increases the speed of the fans , If so where is it coz i never say any slider on it.
I read in the forums that the temperature does not go above 55C while playing games , how is that possible .
I dont want to flash the Bios  , Would appreciate if you can give a solution .
My System Specs are as below

    Please help

    Hi Muhammad
    Salaam Walekum,
First of all congrats for owning a super Card,  I cannot afford that one right now.
You can check out in which directions the fans are rotating. You should have one case fan sucking in air usually located at the front of the case and one or two rear fans which exhausts the hot air in the case. Open your case carefully and check out the directions in which the fan rotate. Also which case are you using, Does it have any holes for side ventillation. I also stay in a hot place in India and my system's Max temp is around 53"C offcourse I'm using an Antec Dual Fan Power Supply. If you are interested in buying an Antec Power Supply do visit http://www.theitdepot.com, its a Web-site from where u can buy Antec Power Supplies, Chasis and Case Fans and the prices listed are in Indian Currency.  Hope this helps

  • NVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra just died - need equivalent for my G5 - HELP

    Hi,
I reviewed the posts but didn't find a simple answer to my mundane (if critical to me!) question:
I have a G5 as outlined below. I upgraded it the very day the 30"monitors were announced and received the:
nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL Card kit
My card died this morning and I need to replace it with a functional equivalent, I know the 6800 is rare which is fine- I just need whatever is available today to get fixed up.
Does anyone know what card I can easily get to do the job?
    Thanks so much.
    My G5
    Model Name: Power Mac G5
    Model Identifier: PowerMac7,3
    Processor Name: PowerPC G5 (3.0)
    Processor Speed: 2.5 GHz
    Number Of CPUs: 2
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB

Alot depends on whether you ever have a second monitor hooked up.
There is a better, faster card than a 6800 for G5s called a 7800GS, but it only has 1 @ DVI port, and one VGA port. The DVI port can run a 30" just fine however. (Means it supports "Dual Link") These are all flashed PC cards....but the ROM is quite stable and they are GREAT cards.
If you need to run 2 @ 30" DVI monitors than you will need to find a Mac 6800 on EBay. It HAS to be an original Mac one, the "flashed" PC ones NEVER have Dual Link capability.
Another option would be a Max X800 XT...it has a DVI port good for a 30" and an ADC port which is only useful for an older Mac ADC monitor...but it can be converted to DVI with a relatively cheap adapter. These cards are super rare but occasionaly show up on Ebay. There are flashed X800s but most are VGA only...the DUal Link DVI ones are ULTRA rare.
No Radeon 9800 ever had Dual Link, so don't waste any time looking at those.
There is a retail option though I am not certain they are available anymore...the Radeon 9600 Mac and PC edition....has to be that one as most Mac 9600s didn't run Dual Link. These cards worked in Mac or PC and had 256 Megs of RAM. Sadly, they are MUCH slower than a 6800.
I can't stress enough that you need to find a card with Dual Link capability to run a 30". Otherwise you will end up looking at your 30" at 1280x800 instead of 2560x1600.
Try BruinMacs on Ebay, college kid who helped write the 7800GS ROM, now selling them for less than everyone else. He sometimes even has the X800 with Dual Link too, ask him.
Sadly, you will find that the official Mac 6800 and X800 cards still fetch $400 or so...the old "Supply & Demand" rule being hard to avoid. If you can find one on a local Craigslist ad, grab it up !!! (after testing)

  • Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra / G5 Dual Processor / 30 in. Display

Just installed Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra in G5 Dual Processor and my 30 in. monitor is not working. Tried theis with my other monitor, a ViewSonic 8P810 and it didn't work either and said monitor had no signal. How do I know if card is working? I did hear the Mac ding letting me know the computer was powering up but not sure it finished. Will the 6800 with other cards above it? How often are these cards dead? Thanks, CD

Hi, I think you have to adjust your firmware, I just read this and it may help you.

Read through it, I didnt understand most of it but there are some usefull looking forum links that may help you.

  • Colour Issues - NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra in G5 2.5Ghz

    Hi
I have an odd issue with NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra card in a G5 Tower.
The monitor (tried several screen so ruled that out) displays as if it is only producing Thousands instead of Millions of colours, but this is only seen at the Black end of the scale and white. For example, if you are viewing a folder's content as list, you can't see the pale blue lines under every other file. If you open another window on top, you can see the blue lines in what would be the shadow of the top window. So pale colours and dark colours are showing as white or black.
Interestingly I have a fix for this issue but it's not permanent as it reverts on restart. If I go to System Prefs > Displays and rotate the display 180˚ and then revert to 0˚ the problem is fixed!
I've tried everything I know to find a permanent fix :-
    Dumping Preferences
    Calibrating
    Resolutions and Refresh rate
I did have this issue on an ATI card, but I resolved that with an ATI System Preference Pane.
    Can anybody suggest trying anything?
    thanks
    Matt

Genius, this strikes a chord. I remember resolving this issue for a customer a couple of years ago and this was the answer. Was v.pleased with myself at the time, but obviously my memory is failing me now.
Can't test until monday, but will be in touch.
PS what does this say/mean - Aha, good clue, the bloe bard!
    thanks
    Matt

  • NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL supported for FC Studio II on DP PPC G5 2.5??

Up dated to 10.4.11 & Studio II (FC6.0.2) and no problem. Even launched Final cut once and all o.k.
2nd time, says grafix card, NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL isn't Quartz Extreme so, good by we're
    quitting.
Swapped into another identical G5 and in Sys Profiler, says the card is Quartz Extreme supported.
What gives? I tried the Nvidia web site for drivers, but they show no Mac support.
    Ideas?
    thanks
    p2

Any progress on this? I just ran into the same problem. I launch Final Cut Pro 6.0.3 and I get an error:
1)Final Cut Pro requires that your system have a Quartz Extreme capable video card.
2)Final Cut Pro recommends that your system have 64 MB of VRAM; this system has only 0 MB of VRAM.
3)The installed graphics card does not not support the OpenGL features recommended by Final Cut Pro.
System profilor shows the GeForce 6600, but no Quarts infomration.

  • MAC G5 nVIDIA GeForce 6800 ULTRA power

just purchased a mac edition geforce 6800 ultra for my g5 dual agp.
will I need to power it by splitting the power from the dvd drive?
    thanks

    Jeff Coutras wrote:
yes its a mac edition (with the little monitor graphic between the DVI ports).
So its powered by the agp port whereas a flashed card is not? just one more reason to stick with genuine mac i guess. thanx guys.
That's why I held out for the Mac edition card.  Turns out that the ROM version on the one I got (2130, or 2.1.3) is later than some of the flashed cards.  I paid a little more than what some flashed cards were going for and haven't regretted it for a second.
With two DVI-D Samsung monitors now, the viewing is just dandy now.

First off have you been using Driver Cleaner to get rid of all the old bits of drivers? if not go get it read the instructions and use it.  Re-start the driver process again.  The latest ones on the Nvidia site are probably a safe bet at the moment.  So clean your PC with that prog and install new drivers.
Then do as you say you have done and ensure 'FastWrites' are turned off.  This is most important.  Get 'Riva Tuner' and this will comfirm you have them turned off.  Also get the 'Coolbits' registry tweak.  Run this and it will add overclocking capability to your display properties.  You can adjust both 2D and 3D speeds.  Now what you must ensure is that they are both set at the same speed!  sometimes the 2D comes set lower than the 3D this can cause symptoms like you are having.  Set the 2D to the same speed as the 3D.
I have an XFX6800 Ultra  in my K8N Neo2 Plat and it works superbly so fingers crossed doing the above will sort it as they are the main probs with the 6800Ultra cards.

  • NV Silencer 5 Problem with a 6800 Ultra

I have purchased and installed an NV Silencer 5 on my Graphics card 6800 Ultra yesterday and realised that there was a problem in that the double backplate didnt have any vent holes to let the heat out, so i phones the people i bought it off and got them to send me on. However i left the cooler on just to see what kind of temps i was going to get and it was idling around 65 C which i thought was understandable. So i removed it and put the stock cooler back on with new thermal Paste and got 51 - 54 C which is great considering the old  thermal paste had me up at 59C. Anyways i got the replacement bracket today and fitted it all and guess what its still idleing at 65C now. when i put my hand at the back of the exhaust i barely feel any airflow at all, the fans spinning in the right direction and i have applied the thermal paste properly, so what am i doing wrong or is there something wrong with the cooler?

  • MSI K8N Neo Plat and 6800 Ultra

I just got a BFG 6800 Ultra from a friend yesterday. Worked great for him the whole time he had it. I just put in a new 550 watt PSU because I read it requires a lot of power. Put it in, fan turns on, card seems to get power just fine. Just loading up and going through BIOS is like a matrix, everything is jumbled around and impossible to read. Windows will not boot, get a black screen. I can run in safe mode with a slightly messed up background. Under settings it does not detect any kind of card, but under device manager it is listed, and I did install drivers. Not sure what the problem could be, I messed around with what I could see in BIOS, turned off fast write and such. Any ideas? Thanks.

If you previously had an ATI card you will need to totally remove the old drivers & it's a good idea to replace them with newer versions regardless.
Simply uninstalling usually isn't enough, because there's always "leftovers". There's a free utility called Driver Cleaner (Google for it) that will remove all traces of the old drivers.
Also, if you are running a Neo 2 Platinum (AGP graphics) there's some other things to be aware of as far as BIOS settings.
    - Disable ATI/Nvidia Speedup. This tries to OC the bejeebus out of your vid card & usually with bad results.
    - Disable Fastwrites as well. This is a known NF3 chipset/6800 issue. One would think that Nvidia parts would "play nice" together - Go figure.

  • UNRESPONSIVE NVidia 6800 card and Powermac G5 Dual 2.5 (2004)

I just purchased a NVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra card for my 2.5 dual G5 (which is a model from 2004). I need the card b/c I've been doing a lot of work in Motion. I bought the card on EBAY and it came in a beautiful Apple box -- barely used and verified to be working.
I installed it and it didn't work, even though my G5 meets all the specs. The card is properly installed (its fan is whirring up a storm), but my 2 Samsung monitors don't activate. (Everything of course works fine with my standard-issue Radeon 9600). I'm on 10.410
    A few notes:
-An AppleCare specialist claimed that my G5 is too old for this card -- even though the card says it works with even First Gen G5's. (I believe mine is 2nd Gen)
-When I try starting up with the Nvidia, I hear a high-pitch sound -- almost like speaker feedback. I saw this on someone else's post with another graphic card issue
-The Graphic Card Installer CD's would not install drivers on my system. Said something about my harrdrive not accepting these drivers
-Another post mentioned how a Logitech wireless keyboard driver can mess up graphic extensions -- which makes no sense to me (I am using a Logitech wireless keyboard.
Any thoughts out there. MUCH MUCH appreciated.

I actually did what Roland suggested and got mine to work. The only problem has been when I run World of Warcraft I now get a Kernel Panic. I have been using the computer without updating anything in osx, currently running osx 10.4.0
I am going to do the cumulative update to see if it behaves better. Is there anyway I can find out if the card is running in AGP x8? This is the card info I get on the system profiler:
    Chipset Model: GeForce 6800 GT
    Type: Display
    Bus: AGP
    Slot: SLOT-1
    VRAM (Total): 256 MB
    Vendor: nVIDIA (0x10de)
    Device ID: 0x0045
    Revision ID: 0x00a1
    ROM Revision: 2121m
This card is different. It says its a 6800GT DDL, but its not the original Åpple made one, its one that says GeForece XFS on the fan...
    What do you guys think?
    Gilbert
