NVidia 7950GX2 Support

I was wondering if MSI plans to update the bioses on motherboards with a 16x PCI-E bus to support PCI-E switching so 7950 graphic cards will be able run on them. I have a 915G Combo and my 7950 will not work on this board.

I'm pretty sure you need a motherboard that supports SLI for that card to work.  Even though it's a single slot card.
Since you can't use that card in that board, you can give that card to me.

    Hello I have a rather strange problem.
    I have a 945GM2-FI motherboard running a Nvidia 7950gx2 graphics card it runns great on windows XP.
    The other day I desided to install windows Vista, to make the story short Vista wont run at all with the graphic card and this motherboard but runs fine with the onboard VGA.
    After searching up and down on the internet about this I found that the solution might have something to do with the motherboards BIOs is it possible to get a beta BIOs with bether support for Vista/Nvidia cards?

    I was thinking in the line to get a new motherboard, but its rather hard to get something like the 945GM2-F as it has 4 memmoryslots and an optical SPDIF out. This seem to be rare on Mini-ATX, atleast as far as I know.

  • Lack of Nvidia extension support under macosx

    I'd like to play City of Heroes under macosx using Crossover Games.
    I can do so fine on my macbook pro because it has a ati graphics card.
    However on my tower I have a nvidia graphics card and the game will not load.
    When I reported it to Crossover Games, I got the following email:

    It says "Your card does not support GLNV_vertexprogram" when I launch CohUpdater.exe .
    That's because GLNV_vertexprogram(a nvidia specific opengl extension) isn't supported on MacOS. It is strictly speaking a bug in CoH. This extension isn't garanted to be there, even if you have an Nvidia card. An application must not depend on it.
    The thing is that this extension happens to be supported by all Nvidia drivers on Windows and Linux, but MacOS uses different drivers which don't support it. So the game's broken assumption that Nvidia->GLNV_vertexprogram support doesn't hold true on Macs.
    I can understand that this causes troubles for you. I can file a bug in Apple's bugtracker requesting support for this extension, but its likely that they'll just tell me that software can't depend on this extension.

    Not really sure what type of response you're expecting here. Youv'e been told that the drivers don't support it, and there's really nothing your or anyone else here can do about it but hope for future support.

    I'm planning to buy a Nvidia 7950Gx2 card.. specifically XFX 7950Gx2 XXX Edition for my Mac Pro 3Ghz.
    ive read on the net some ppl having sucess with the 7950gx2 under the windows enviroment
    unfortunaetly it causes a kernel panic when booting into OSx??
    does the new updates 10.4.8 or the new firmware update for the Mac Pro fix this problem?
    or rather anyone out there have luck running this card on thier mac pro?
    mainly casue i don't want to buy the card only to find out it doesn't work...

    You cannot use PC versions of video cards in the Mac Pro. The video cards for the Mac Pro require a proprietary Apple ROM that enables the card to boot on an EFI machine. Although you can install the card and Windows drivers (on the Windows side, if you have one) it will not work with OS X.

    Seems to be the same around here with a 8600M GT. I had never used this tool before. It looks nice for scripting, at least for temperature and memory (can't get much more from it as well).

  • Nvidia Optimus Support under XP - NVS3100mm vs Intel integrated

    Hi,
    We are currently in the process of evaluating the T510 as our new standard laptop.
    We are considdering purchasing teh 4314-9WG model, that has on board both the Nvidia Quadro NVS3100mm, as well as the integrated Intel graphics of the QM57 chipset. 
    Now normally, the Nvidia Optimus system would enable the user to switch between these 2 graphics "cards"  on the fly (as I understand it). 
    However, our current install image is still based on Windows XP SP3, as there is no driver support for Nvidia Optimus for XP.
    Thus, we have the following question: 
    Will our users be able to use the Intel integrated Graphics by default on XP, even though the Optimus witching will not work. 
    or in other words: 
    Is the Optimus driver a pre-requisite for using one or the other video card as default under Windows XP
    What will the Laptop due without this driver? 
    We would accept that for now, users would be bound to only use either the Intel integrated graphics, or the Nvidia Quadro. 

    I am able to get the NVS3100 working ok under XP, except that is defaults to 16bit color for some reason, which I then have to change manually. 
    Now, for the Integrated Intel HD Graphics, I do the following: 
    In the BIOS, under Display, the "graphics device" is set to Integrated Graphics, and the "OS detection for NVIDIA Optimus" is set to disabled. 
    I am using the latest drivers for Intel HD, 6.14.10.5313
    When Windows XP boots, it detects 2 devices: 
    - Audiodevice on bus for High Definition Audio
    - Videocontroller (VGA Compatible)
    If I now try to install the intel driver pack ( 6.14.10.5313 )  it will start with the installation for the Intel Turbo Boost Technology Driver. This seems to install without problem.
    But when I click finish at teh end of it, nothing else happens. 
    What I expect is that it would now start the install for the Intel HD Graphics setup. And it simply doesnt. 
    If I first unpack the executable, i get a folder called DISPLAY6
    Inside, I can start an executable called Setup (Intel HD Graphics Installer) But all this seems to do is start the Turbo Boost Technology driver setup again. And afterwards, again, nothing happens. 
    I have tried it both from a situation where the NVIDIA drivers where previously not installed, and where they where installed and I switched it later. Both give the same results.
    Its almost like it doesnt properly detect teh hardware, or cant see that the Intel driver goes with it. 
    I have also tried to manually install teh driver, by pointing to unknown VGA device to teh unpacked driver location, but it doesnt find any drivers there that it can use.

    Even a bleeding edge distro like Arch has to be careful about upgrades. We want to be up to date, but at the same time we don't want to worry that a "pacman -Syu" is going to hugely break our systems without warning. Anyone running an Nvidia card would have been awfully upset when their chosen distribution chose to break their previously flawless 3d acceleration. Given that it was reasonable to assume that Nvidia would produce a driver fairly soon (as indeed they have) I have no problem with the fact that the decision was made to delay the transition for a little while.
    Surely if Nvidia had broken their tradition of above average Linux support the move to X.org 7.1 would have been made regardless. I don't think the plan was ever to wait "as long as it takes."
    I like open source software a lot myself. If my every whim were to be satisfied, running a completely free-as-in-freedom system would near the top of my list. However, nothing ever gets done without compromise. A person has to give as they take. They give a driver, and we give by relaxing our principles a little. Is that wrong, or is that cooperation?
    Stiff positions with no wiggle room don't solve problems or get you what you want. They start wars. Obviously a war over device drivers is what they call "unlikely", but the same mistrust, ill wishes, and lack of progress that wars entail are what you'll get. You've got to examine the trade-offs, and make a decision on a case-by-case basis. Sometimes you just can't work with the other guy. Much more often, you can.
    The question is whether what Nvidia is doing is so awful and anti-freedom that we can't let it slide. You contend that it is, and if we use their system we'll be trapped in a hell of proprietary drivers and vendor-controlled computers. I contend that you're probably wrong.
    It seems preferable to control your life completely. Do what you want, when you want. Sounds nice. In the real world we depend on others for nearly everything in our lives. There is nothing wrong with that. What is wrong is when the others we depend on attempt to force unfair terms on us. Nvidia isn't doing that. It's not unfair to keep their driver secrets to themselves. It's not the most generous thing to do, but none of us are as generous as we could be. Self-interest is par for the course in human affairs.
    There is such a thing as "free enough" and it falls short of a completely open system. "Free enough" is different for everyone, but for me running a system which is entirely free software except for a few well-supported drivers is free enough to get by. Nvidia isn't stopping me from using my computer as I want. In fact, they're helping me to do it, by providing functional drivers that don't attempt to control me (as DRM software does, for example).
    Would a fully free system be better? Possibly. I would like it better. More important though, is to say *why* it would be better. If the driver in question behaves like a "by us, for us" driver would, is available gratis, and comes with no odious restrictions, where is the problem? If they give us what we would make ourselves (or better), why complain?  Because using free software gives us a warm, fuzzy feeling that proprietary software can't match. We like to feel "in control" of our computers even when that control would buy us nothing.
    There are cases in which it's better not to be beholden to your vendors. Unsupported and poorly supported hardware is trouble. In that case, "open source or we won't buy" is completely appropriate. That company doesn't take care of its customers. Well-supported hardware? Not so much. Paranoia about running proprietary code rears its head. We're afraid of losing control over our systems, because we don't trust these evil proprietary corporations. After all, they're not with us, so they must be against us, right? Wrong. Nvidia isn't the enemy. They're a company that makes a product, and we are their customers. They've shown through their actions that they care about us enough to support us. That could change, but so could a lot of things. No one can be in your corner all the time. For the time being, Nvidia is.
    In an interdependant world, ultimatums are nothing more than sand clogging up the machinery of society. There are freedoms that we should under no circumstances surrender, and there are those which we can trade, for our long term or short-term good. The freedom to control our computers? Let's hold on to that one. The freedom to modify every single piece of software on the computer? Maybe being able to modify nearly every single piece of it is enough, as long as we are free to add or remove the unmodifiable software as we wish.
    Deciding where to draw the line is a hairy question. Unfortunately, dodging that question by adopting an absolutist philosophy isn't an option. One extreme leaves you with no control over your computer. The other sounds nice until you remember that most of the world does not want to operate like you do. If you won't work with others, then they won't work with you. Big companies don't come around to your way of thinking just because they like you.
    I mention Nvidia a lot, because they're the topic of the day. Other situations are different, which is my entire point. One-size-fits-all answers are wrongs answers.
    Each situation must be evaluated according to its own merits. Sometimes "good enough" is good enough. I'd say this is one of those times.

    Linux might not have gotten of the ground without using only free software, but now is not then. Linux is well-established, as is free software. Perhaps now is the time to gain ground in another way (I sound like ESR here).

I do have nvidia-settings installed so i'm guessing that the package (nvidia or nvidia-utils maybe) doesn't install the headers during install
    What would be the best way to get those headers, should i build a custom package for it from abs?

  • NVIDIA SLI support on my MSI DKA790GX Board ?

    I own the MSI DKA 790GX M/b, AMD Phenom II x4 965 BE, and Two MSI N250GTS 2D1G PCI-e video cards windows 7 pro 64bit.  I want to install second Video card.  Will This AMD chipset support NVidia SLI using the ATI Crossfire bridge adapter that ships with the motherboard?  I cant find any info anywhere that says that the SLI Bridge connector is universal fit for NVida/ATI boards? IF i need a special NVidia SLI bridge connector where do i get this?
    I am new to SLI and any help would be appreciated.

     No you can't use CrossFire bridge on NVIDIA VGA cards. No you can't use any NVIDIA cards in SLI on that MB. Yes you need ATI VGA cards for CrossFire on that MB. If you would have read the MB specifications you would have known this before purchasing the parts.

  • 990 fxa-gd65 and nvidia gtx support?

    Hi all,
    I just got the last of the parts for my new build and it should be  bamf'n . Anyway, I spent the last two days tracking down the b2 error code.  So I swapped out the Galaxy GTX 760 gpu with my old Radeon (I don't remember what it is but it's in the system now so I can't read it...) and low and behold, the system boots and i've got Window's installed and Fedora on the way.
    Anyway, My question is this, Tiger Direct has already exchanged the Galaxy GTX 760 for another galaxy GTX 760 but that presented the same issue.  I'm unfamiliar with MSI's resources and therefore I must ask: Are there any known issues with the 990 fxa-gd65 and NVidia cards? GTX cards? Galaxy Cards?
    Would I be better off exchanging this video card for a amd or another geforce?...
    The only other thing I can figure it *might* be is that the psu doesn't supply enough power for that beastly graphics card...
    I'm at a loss here.  I've never heard of any issue this specific to compatibility to two pieces of Hardware and this isn't my first Rodeo.

    I disagree. The card seems to be the issue because it is the only thing that we swapped out that resolved the issue.  While I agree that this is a good next step, it occurs to me that if a different card would also resolve the issue I would be willing to accept that path to resolution instead of taking the intermediary step of updating the bios.     Also, on your link I do not see windows 8 support for the driver.  This does work in Windows 8 correct?

    According to the Hardware Maintenance Manual, it's part of the system board, so the graphics adapter can't be swapped out.

    There's no reclocking for this card currently.
    Nouveau runs it locked at 405 MHz GPU clock, 648 MHz memory clock, 810 MHz processor clock.
    Nvidia can run it at 3 perf levels:

  • [Solved] Xorg 1.5 screwed up my NVIDIA

    Today I did a pacman -Syu and I got the newest NVIDIA driver installed and the newest Xorg. Everything broke. Well not exactly everything. But my settings are all screwed up. For a start my screen refuses to load at the normal resolution (1680x1050). I got a default 1024x860 (or whatever it is). Also my colour depth is 16. And regardless of any changes I make in NVIDIA settings manager the changes never stick. Also my compiz-fusion is totally screwed up. When it starts up my screen goes completely white. I have to blindly alt+F2 and run kwin to be able to do anything.
    Also my fonts are really small.

    hmmm, I have exactly the same problem and I also use the nvidia-96xx.
    I noticed that I only get the scrambled text for the lines beyond 20 lines...so if I rescale the height of my window to 20 lines I never get scrambled text and and when I change the height of the window larger then 20 lines, only the 20+ lines get scrambled.

  • [Solved]Xorg 1.6 with nvidia 180.44 2D performance painfully slow

    Hi folks,
    Since the latest upgrade of Xorg and Nvidia all screen refreshes have become visibly very slow. Anything that has to redraw the whole screen takes a full second and my cpu usage jumps to 15%. The wierd thing is that glxgears is getting 200fps and looks perfectly smooth. Direct rendering is enabled and the client and server versions of the driver match. There are no errors in the Xorg.0.log apart from warnings about ACPI
    I am using an Nvidia 6200 in TwinView mode with 2 identical monitors.
