Nvidia 8600 - is there a risk of buying MPB 2.4?

I have a good offer to buy used MPB 2.4 (MacBookPro 3,1) produced at week 23 of 2007. I know it has potentially risky GPU chip 8600. A friend of mine who was using this machine less than two years never run games, he never yet experienced death screen. He used MPB basically for Lightroom, FCP and Photoshop. Same do I.
I know it's maybe risky to buy such machine especially keeping in mind that 2 years of replacement-for-free will end somewhere in this summer, anyway I have few questions:
1. Does all this situation with faulty NVIDIA chip mean that GPU will fail one day, anyway, earlier or sooner? Is this fail permanent, or rather spontaneous and depends on temporary heating = intensive tasks?
2. Does it definitely related on gaming, which use GPU, or not? Does Adobe applications or Apple's Pro apps use GPU as much intensively as games?
3. Does fans setting to turn earlier helps to prevent overheating?
Thank you.

  • Is there any risk in buying a refurbished iPod?

Buying a refurb and saving about £60 seems too good to be true. Has anyone bought a refurbished iPod and is there any risk?
    Thanks for your help.

Im sure there is a risk but its small in my opinion. refurb means it is restored to factory specs. I bought one a year back and have had no trouble. I would make sure the company you buy from is a respectable one.

  • How can I better influence Customer Care to cover the known defective NVidia 8600 processor in my MBP which is just over 4 yr old?!

I have an 11/2007 MBP... 4 yrs, 2 months and 3 weeks old tomorrow.  Yesterday I got the "black screen of death".
I won't bore you with what I tried, but today a local expert assessed the situation: reset SMC and PRAM, noted that it booted into target disc mode and would screen share, in other words, he proved it was one of the known MBP's of this genre (15", 2.4/2.2GHz) to have a defective NVIDIA 8600 graphics processor.  I called the recommended local Apple Authorized repair facility only to be told that, while these WERE being repaired at no charge, out of warranty, it had been discoved that, OMG they were repairing a WHOLE BUNCH of them and a time limit had been imposed and there were no longer being repaired after they reached four years from purchase date.
WHY WAS THERE NOT A RECALL?  WHY WAS NO ONE EVER NOTIFIED OF THIS DEFECT? And why am I just SOL because my computer chose to work an extra two months and eighteen days?
I plowed through the "you don't have phone service" with battering ram efficiency this evening, past the Apple care agent, his supervisor, and to "Customer Care" with whom I will be speaking again tomorrow.  I have told them I "EXPECT" a "customer satisfaction code" which will provide me with a free repair.  I have armed myself with the absolutely outrageous information that Apple, after booting NVidia out three years ago (one guesses after the rotten graphics bit) is welcoming them BACK this spring - Oh, so ANOTHER generation of MBPro users can get screwed?
I sure could use some help here when I need another argument!  Does anyone know the magic language to induce Apple to behave in an Apple-like manner concerning this matter?

Their is no "magic language".  The 4 years has passed and you have nothing to argue about: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2377.  Apple owes you nothing anymore regarding the out of warranty repair on your mac.  How long do you expect them to repair this for? 7 years, 10 years?

  • Macbook Pro - Display Blank - Nvidia 8600

    Hi All,
I have a mid-2007 mbp. It has worked relatively well up until approx 5 days ago. The only issue it's had is the optical drive malfunctioned, just 2 months outside of the warranty. Currently, approx 5 days ago, I was writing an email, nothing else was running, and the screen went blank. However, the computer was still on, as the regular sound could be heard. So I waited 5min to see if the screen might come back on; it didn't. Next, I hard shutdown via holding the power button for approx 10sec. Next, I waited a few minutes, then pressed the power button to boot back up. It did turn on, however it seemed to be stuck in 'sleep mode'. The white ambient light, located on the latch release button, stayed 1/2 lite while the lid was open, then full brightness when the lid was closed; no 'pulsing'. I pressed some of the keys to see if it would 'wake back up' but nothing I did changed it's state. I pressed the power button for 1/2 a second; nothing changed. The mbp has never done anything remotely like this. At this stage I reset the PRAM successfully; the issue persisted. I reset the SMC; issue persisted. It kept looping threw the same scenario. I decided to reset the PRAM again out of desperation & this time it would not go threw; no 'start up chimes x2'.
I'm looking for any advice towards something I have not tried; beyond using it as a Frisbee. I realize this is most likely a hardware issue. The mbp is well out of it's warranty. A repair at this time would not be worth the expense. It's a shame because the computer was more than adequate for it's purpose. Upon reading several articles & mainly forum discussions it seems as though it might be related to the known Nvidia issue. I am aware of the kbase article. I took the unit into a local AASP & not surprisingly because the unit does not fully turn on, the Nvidia test was not able to be completed. As of now, the AASP is 'investigating' further & will get to me with any details they find. I am also aware of the nvidiasettlement.com website. Upon filling out the required information, the site presented me with a screen stating 'my claim form has been approved and successfully submitted'. The big issue I'm having with the site is I am a Canadian, although I live approx 15min drive from the the U.S. Canadian border. Seeing as it is an American class action lawsuit, not surprisingly, the site will only let you enter an American physical address. For argument sake I entered an American friends address just to be able to progress through the request form.
If there are anymore trouble-shooting steps anyone can provide and/or if anyone has had a past experience with the settlement site, your thoughts/ideas are welcome.

I should find out tomorrow. I'll post back with the results. I need to have a working computer by the beginning of next week --so I'm trying to not buy a replacement. The fact that it won't fully boot up is what's frustrating. The tech even said it 'may' in fact be the nvidia issue but there is no way to know unless the test can be performed. If it's not the nvidia issue, then does anyone know of any steps to 'fully wake' it from sleep mode? I had been using it with an external monitor. After the issue, when I connected via external, there was no change at all. Also, I had had a USB thumb drive in it, just shortly before this happened & pulled it out, not while transferring data, but I forgot to use the correct 'eject' method. I have hard time believing that had anything to do with it. Another question: What does a dim 1/2 lite ambient white light (with lid open) & a fully lite ambient white light (with lid closed) indicate? Are the lights ever expected to appear that way? I am used to the light 'pulsating' while the lid is closed --never solid fully lit. I can't remember the state the lights appear when connected to an external. Is this how the lights appear when connected to an external monitor? Is is possible something (debree, etc.) got lodged in the DVI connector & now it thinks there is a monitor connected?

  • Is nVidia's SLI really worth it? Buy an Ultra!

I was in the middle of a game and guess what...my SLI plastic clip broke and my game froze at a crucial part which has taken me the last 30 minutes to get as far as I got.  I call that weird!  Fortunately I did the free upgrade with MSI and they had sent me lots of extras including a replacement plastic clip that keeps the SLI switch card in place between the 2 pci-e slots.
Anyway!  I just dont think SLI is worth it.  I got a cheap second msi 6600gt vid card on eBay to go to SLI but a single 7800gtx whomps anything out in the marketplace.  In fact, you need a 21 inch LCD monitor to get the full benefit of a single 7800gtx (according to Anandtech).  Second, the 2 6600gt's that I have take up more power than a single 7800gtx so IMO SLI is not worth it cause it will force me to upgrade to a more powerful psu!  What a waste of money!
I think it is simply a marketing gimmick by nVidia and so if anyone reads this - buy an Ultra!  Is there any real benefit to SLI - I say its bull@#$%!  Anyone else want to add 2 cents?

I've seen benchmarks online where they compared several cards, including 6600GT and 6800 in both single and SLI mode.   As was observed by ChakkaSol, SLI 'advantages' only seemed to make a big difference at very high resolutions with AA/AF on.  Seems like most mainstream cards now are strong enough to handle what most games throw at them, it's only when being really extreme that they need that extra edge.
Wether it's worth it or not is up to the user.  I've seen some impressive numbers from two overclocked 6800 (not even GT or Ultra), but you need to have the setup to use it to its full potential to benefit from it.  When you looked at FPS / $, it would give a rather impressive value deal.  But unless you're really extreme, you could buy a single 6800 and last until the prices on bigger cards comes down, I don't believe any gaming company is gonna release a game that *requires* that much video processing for a while, since they would be losing sales as those 7800 cards aren't in the price range of most people.
I bought a SLI motherboard in order to have the option to choose later on, but right now a single 6800 seems to be sufficient.  I would agree that for most people, buying an nForce 4 SLI chipset could be a waste of money when an Ultra would do just as well.  You really need to have one heck of a gaming rig to take advantage of SLI, and the bigger the graphic card, the bigger the rig needs to be before you notice the difference (it has to be enough to 'saturate' one card, so dual 7800 for example would be pretty much a waste of money until the 7800 is no longer sufficient).

  • Is there a risk of setting a console connection timeout and what is the recommended setting?

Is there a risk of setting a console connection timeout and what is the recommended setting? Please suggest if there is any best prctice documentation that can be referred.

    Hi Henrik
depend on what you need or what your security policy says for my lab gear i use 60 minutes. because i know how can access this. if you have gear outside in insecure space set it to a minimum or disable the console. everybody how can access your gear can break in. simple restart and boot w/o config. and you are in.
it realy depends how secure is your space and how much security you need.
and than the settings for policy have to match, what sec do you have if your console login and logout is secure. but when you restart you can simple break in by starting w/o config and than load it.

  • I'm getting the grey screen during start up and can't boot the computer. I did a cmnd R but worried it would automatically wipe my hard drive and reinstall OS.  Is there a risk at cmnd R will result in wiped HD without me actively making that choice?

I'm getting the grey screen during start up and can't boot the computer - MacBook Pro with lion.
I did a command r after doing some research but got nervous that it would automatically wipe my hard drive and reinstall OS.
I was nervous because it asked me for language for software use before any options were presented (such as repair via disk utility). It looked similar to an OS install. So I powered off....Is there a risk at command r will result in wiped HD without me actively making that choice?

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is
                    three times faster than wireless.

  • Is there a risk to have my power cable connected at all times?

Is there a risk to have my power cable connected at all times?

No, I keep mine connected most of the time.  However, it's bad for the battery to stay on power literally ALL the time, so don't treat your laptop as a desktop.  If you're not going places with it often, unplug it and use it on the battery for a little while at least once or twice per month.  And every now and then, use it until the battery runs empty and the machine puts itself to sleep.
