NVidia 8600M GT more RAM?

I have a MacBook Pro (~2008) 2.4GHz with 4GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM and the nVidia 8600M GT video chip with 256MB vRAM. I am working with Adobe Photoshop CS6 and continually get a message that my 3D capabilities are disabled due to lack of vRAM available (need 512MB min) ...
Question: Is there a way to manaually provision more RAM to the video card to up it to 512 MB?
Thanks.

The NVIDIA GeForce 8600M is a dedicated graphic card, so you can't modify its VRAM because it's not being shared with your main memory. In Macs with integrated cards, you can add more VRAM by installing more RAM. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3246

  • Will more RAM help NVIDIA?

I am thinking about a new imac 21.5 to replace G5 17. Not a gamer or music user but do photos and occasional home video.
Will more RAM than 4 GB for NVIDIA to share with the CPU speed up graphics to an appreciable extent?
Or should I just bite the bullet and go for the upgraded graphics card, providing I will ever notice the difference.

    Jim,
    Look at the data http://marketingtactics.com/Speedmark/
You new iMac will be about 2.5x the power of your current G5 iMac.

  • 10.6.8 freeze macbookpro3,1 nvidia 8600M

I have been having somewhat random lockups since upgrading my machine to 10.6.8.  It appears to be a video issue, but I can't be sure if it is a hardware problem or a software issue related to the update.  Every time before the machine freezes (hard lock up, requires pushing the power button, disconnecting the power cable, and removing the battery in order to reboot!) the screen flickers (1 to maybe max 6 times) the cursor moves for just a moment longer, and then its totally done.
I have an older MacBook Pro 3,1
    Nvidia 8600M graphics card.
The machine also has PGP Whole Disk Encryption and VMWare Fusion for a good combination of strange kernel extensions.
I haven't seen any evidence of peripherals being the problem, although when it is connected to my second display (Apple 23" display) it seems to happen a lot more frequently.  (That is also when it is connected to the external hard drives, including time machine.)  Removing the hard drives didn't seem to help.
Here is the dump report.  Any help would be appreciated.  It will take me approximately 1 month to replace the machine through purchasing, so any tips would really help.

I am encountering the same problem. It started around a week ago, and seems to be occurring a few times a day now.  Any solution to this?

  • Share more RAM with GMA 950

would be possible to share more RAM with the GMA 950 ? I have 2 GB ram and 64Mb is shared with graphic card.Let's say i would like to share 128MB will this help to something ? If yes, where i can do it? I know how to do it on PC but dunno about mac. Thanks

Yes, it would be nice but Intel graphics are set to use only so much Ram even if you have some to spare. It would not provide any better performance even if you could. Because of the design of the chip its not capable of doing a lot of with games for example. The new chip x1300 from Intel which is on the newest MacBooks will use more Ram and can play some games like Far Cry with lower resolutions and slower frame rates. But some say its still pretty good. One of the big problems is that game studio's design games for Nvidia and ATI cards and don't even consider anything else. That's is to bad for those of use who by laptops.

  • Does my MacBook White 7,1 need more RAM?

    Hi, I'm Federico from Argentina.
It's my first post here. First of all, sorry for my english, hope it's not so bad.
I am photographer and digital retoucher, so, as you might imagine... I use a lot Photoshop (CC).
I'm thinking that I need to upgrade my Macbook to 8gb (now I have 4gb) because my OSX is running slow, and it's affecting my workflow (upgrading to MB Pro is not a chance... no budget for that...).
In the Activity Monitor when retouching in Photoshop memory pressure shows in yellow (Mavericks).
Beyond that, here's my EtreCheck report, I think you may find it useful for troubleshooting my problem.
    Thank you so much!

Yes, you need more RAM, but more imprtantly:
Macintosh HD (disk0s2) / [Startup]: 249,2 GB (3,45 GB free) (Low!)
Your Mac is running on vapour! You are risking data loss and a fouled-up system. You urgently need to move files (not applications) to an external hard drive, to leave at least 30GB free.

  • After Effects CC 12.1 Adding more Ram

Sorry, I've searched for this answer and haven't found anything about AE CC v12 and Ram, plenty on Ram, just not AE CC v12, actually v12.1 now.
My question, is it better to have fewer slots of Ram with larger sticks, or more slots of ram with smaller sticks ?  Basically I want to add more ram to my system but not sure which of those is better, if any?
I'm running a HP Z820 w/32 processors (hyperthread of course), nvidia k5000 & 32GB Ram.   I wanted to throw some more Ram into the system, maybe 64GB but wasn't sure it I should just add more to the 16 slots I have available or replace the sticks I have with larger ones ? OR maybe it's a waste of time/money.  The way capitol works here, i use it or lose it and not sure when the bank will be open again if ya know what i mean.
thanks for any adivce and for answering my Ram question, much appreicated.
Running windows 7 professional, Adobe Creative Cloud, C4D R15, maya, etc.

Fewer is (slightly) better generally as long as the config is optimized. On a dual CPU Z820, 64GB (8x 8GB ECC reg) is also a good setup along with the 128GB one Eric suggested.
Also see no problem with just adding another 32GB (8x 4GB) as long as they're matched for type (all registered or unbuffered but not mixed).

  • Can you start Illustrator CC2014 with more RAM?

I am using Illustrator to edit very large SVG files (>150MB), and the software is extremely slow and stops responding periodically, while it (slowly, slowly) acquires more RAM. Is there a way to start Illustrator with a larger amount of RAM, e.g. 8 or 16 GB?
I'm working on a MacPro with 32 GB of RAM, two 6-core processors, an NVIDIA Quadro K5000 video card (4GB RAM) and tons of free disc space. It's very frustrating to see Illustrator not taking advantage of the available machine resources! I scoured the web for solutions and came up empty-handed.... Any tips?

There is nothing you can do. Even if you could assign a fixed memory range, the program would still need to load the objects one by one and render them, so it actualyl doesn't even make sense to think of it that way...

  • Graphics card update, More RAM, what to do?

At the risk of replicating Amg Video Productions post below http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=537641&tstart=0 I just wanted to add this. We're in a similar situation - bought a new Power Mac 2.5 Ghz with 2.5 G RAM and GeoForce FX 5200 last spring and Motion is just a dog on it. Endless renders, 3-4 FPS real time play back, everything gummy as he**. My question is -- what does anyone suggest? Do we plow another $800 into a new graphics card when the Intel Core Duos are coming out for the towers? Do we whack in more RAM? Or what's the solve here? We're growing fast and using Motion increasingly for things we used to outsource, which is a huge save for us - not to mention that the clients love it. So it's becoming an indispensible part of our creative arsenal. But if we pimp this machine out to run Motion well that means we've blown almost a grand that could go toward a new Intel-based PowerMac (or whatever they're going to be called).

I'm not gonna presume to tell you which option is best for you, but I will say that the FX5200 is the slowest card that will run Motion by far. Slower by a factor of 3 or 4 over the next higher up ATI 9600. You could get one of those for $65. You could go for an ATI 9800 for somewhere areound $269. Running the same project and comparing gfx cards, (the thread is here) shows:
    nVidia 5200....1.5 fps
    ATI 9600.......4 fps
    ATI 9800.......10 fps
    ATI x800.......17 fps
    nVidia 6800....18 fps
    nVidia 7800....21 fps
So you can see that there is quite a bit of room for improvement over your FX5200 for less than a grand...

    Hi,
    Here is my /var/log/messages.log output.
Since several days my computer repeatedly restarts programs that require at least a bit memory, such as firefox ('segmentation fault'), skype, virtualbox, generaly gnome 3 environment. Sometimes it happens that the system hangs and I can't do nothing, although I can hear that hard disk is working - at that moment only hard reset helps.
I know that the Dell Inspiron laptops (1720) have problems with Nvidia 8600M GT (the cold solder). Is it like that this time? Or maybe something wrong with the memory, CPU (Core Duo) cache memory?
I will be happy to add any additional information.
    Regards,
    Lukasz

Did you update the nividia driver recently?
there are some threads on this

  • I have 1 GB RAM on an '07 MacBook Pro. 1) How do I check remaining memory? 2) I have Microsoft office 2004 - do I need to buy more RAM to upgrade to '11? 3) I need a new battery ... Is it worth the $$ to buy a new battery, RAM and Microsoft office 2011?

I have a MacBook Pro from '07 with 1 GB of memory. The battery is shot and my AppleCare has run out. I just upgraded the OS to 10.6.8. But a few questions:
1 - How do I even check how much memory I have left on this computer?
2 - How do I check how many battery cycles are left?
3 - I want to upgrade to Microsoft Office '11 because I don't have Adobe Acrobat to creat pdf's and I need to be able to do this for school... Instead of buying acrobat, I figured I would just upgrade to Office '11 because I can generate pdf's from Word. Roughly how much RAM does Office '11 take up?
4 - Does Apple still make batteries for this computer (from '07)? How much do they cost?
5 - How much does 1 more GB of memory cost?
AND lastly -- is it even worth it to spend the $ on more RAM, a new battery and Office '11?
Or does it make more sense to just get a new computer entirely? (trying to avoid this).
ANY help would be sooo appreciated! Thanks.

1 - How do I even check how much memory I have left on this computer?
If you're asking how to check to see if you need more RAM, open Activity Monitor and go to the System Memory tab, then compare page outs and page ins.  If page outs is 10% or more of page ins, you probably need more RAM.
2 - How do I check how many battery cycles are left?
There's no limit on the number of battery cycles, it's just that the more cycles you've used the more "worn out" your battery gets.  You've got a 4-year-old machine, and if it's still got the original battery, it's probably about time for a replacement battery.  You can check battery health using System Profiler...  look at the Power section under Hardware.
3 - I want to upgrade to Microsoft Office '11 because I don't have Adobe Acrobat to creat pdf's and I need to be able to do this for school... Instead of buying acrobat, I figured I would just upgrade to Office '11
You don't need Office 2011 to create PDFs.  Any application capable of printing can create PDFs on a Mac.  Just choose File -> Print, but instead of clicking the Print button in the print dialog, click the PDF button and choose Save As PDF in the menu that appears.
4 - Does Apple still make batteries for this computer (from '07)? How much do they cost?
5 - How much does 1 more GB of memory cost?
I'll "ditto" sig's answers to these.
AND lastly -- is it even worth it to spend the $ on more RAM, a new battery and Office '11?
Or does it make more sense to just get a new computer entirely? (trying to avoid this).
If Office 2004 is still working fine for you, stick with that and don't incur the costs of Office 2011.  As to the RAM, only add more if the test I mentioned above indicates that you need it.  If you buy more RAM when you don't really need it, you won't see much (if any) performance improvement.  That just leaves the battery...  and if the machine is still doing what you need it to do and you don't really need a new machine for anything, you could definitely buy a new battery and get a few more years out of it.

  • Can I add more ram than suggested

I need to get some more ram for my imac that apple say I can expand to 16gb. I currently have the standed 4gb.
In the following article from pcworld i noticed the following (especially the bold)
All iMacs come standard with 4GB of memory, installed as a pair of 2GB modules. When you order an iMac through the Apple Online Store, you have the option to upgrade the memory to 8GB (a pair of 4GB modules) on all iMac models for $200, or to 16GB (four 4GB modules) on the 27-inch models for $600. The iMac has four memory slots located at the bottom of the iMac that are user-accessible. Since two slots are empty when you buy an standard-configuration iMac, you can easily add more memory. The 21.5 inch iMac has support for up to 16GB of memory; third party companies are offering 32GB memory upgrades for the new 27-inch iMac.
Does this mean that I can technically go up to 32gb?  Is there a down side to adding more the an 16gb suggested.

Although you can install up to 16 GBs of RAM in both 21 and 27" models, I can not confirm that you can install 32 GBs in the 27" model. You might check OWC to see what they say.

  • Success story: NVIDIA 8600M GT graphics card defect repaired at no cost

This is the story of Apple servicing my MacBook Pro with the NVIDIA graphics card defect.
I had the NVIDIA 8600M GT graphics card defect in my 2 year old MacBook Pro. The symptoms were pinkish images, scrambled and chopped images, and finally leading to no video, all within a matter of 3 days. I called AppleCare using the old number I remembered from my 100mhz Mac days: 1-800-SOS-APPLE. I was greeted by a real person within 3 minutes. She explained that my 90-day complimentary phone service had expired some 600 days ago.
After I mentioned the specific Apple Knowledge base article that described the defect (TS2377), and that it was covered up to three years out of warranty, she transferred me to a MacBook Pro specialist. Sheri ran me through several standard resets and reboots. She then suggested that it be taken into an Apple store for a genius to look at. When I explained that the nearest Apple Store was an hour away, she arranged for a mail-in service.
After the call had ended, I received a simple email with her phone number so that I could contact her if I needed to. Another automated email contained my repair case number and a link to check the status online. The online status center is very easy to use. It displayed three steps: Sending the empty box, service in progress and return. FedEx tracking numbers were included with working links.
The next day an empty box arrived, completely with graphical IKEA like packaging instructions and form fitting foam for my MacBook Pro. I knew when the FedEx truck came around, so I had my computer ready by my side. As soon as FedEx showed up, I explained that the empty box was for the computer and Marcos helped me apply the pre-paid return label and taped the box expertly with tape from his truck. I also placed in the box a copy of the Apple Knoweldge base article and pictures I had taken of the issue.
Apple had included a small stack of super adhesive pre-cut tape square, but Macros was already taping it before I figured out what they were. The return label was also pre-paid with overnight service.
The next day I logged into the online support status at Apple.com and checked my status. The tracking number showed it had arrived in Houston, and the three steps had been updated to "Repairs completed" and "Return in progress."
The return FedEx tracking number was displayed later in the evening, and it showed that it was guaranteed to arrive by 10:30AM the next day. Speedy service! Sure enough, the next day I had my computer back in my hands, all data perfect and intact. I was very worried since I was not able to make a back up before sending it in, and Apple does not guarantee data safety. Apple had replaced the logic board, valued at $700 on iFixit (http://www.ifixit.com/MacBook-Parts/MacBook-Pro-15-Inch-Core-2-Duo-2-2-GHz-Logic -Board/IF185-073).
The funny thing is, for the past 5 years, I have always cloned my drive or used time machine, but for the past two months I had cleared the backups to make up extra room on my externals. You really never know when disaster will strike!
    Learned:
    - Apple Customer Care is top notch, speedy and their status site is very easy to use
    - FedEx service was very helpful
    - If you have a NVIDIA graphics card, Mac or PC, check if your model is affected. Just today Sony announced that NVIDIA cards with defects will now be covered for 4 years out of warranty. (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-10307592-64.html)
    - Back up your stuff NOW. Use a flash drive or email files to yourself for a cheap fix.

    ha
got the same problem with my mbp (dec 2007)
also no video within 5 hours .... also no external video.
lucky i had screen sharing on so i could check the system profiler via an other mac.
It couldn't find the 6800M GT anymore...
did another backup and went to the local apple store
took a print out of Apple Knowledge base article that described the defect (TS2377)
and they replaced the logicboard+gpu for free within 10 days ...
everything is ok now except for my maxmsp copy which thinks it runs on an other machine and complains about a missing licence ....

  • Nvidia 8600M GT PCI-E problem on GX600 notebook.

    Hello,
I've got MSI GX600 notebook with Nvidia 8600M GT video card.
The problem is, that the notebook has a low performance in 3D.
It's caused by that 8600M GT video card, because the GPU-Z shows, that the card runs only in PCI-E 1x mode, but it is in the x16 PCI-E "slot".
I tried everything. Reinstall of OS (Windows 7 64, Windows XP, Windows 7 32), new drivers, old drivers, nvidia drivers, msi drivers, alternate drivers(OMEGA),
flashing of motherboard bios, cleaning the ventilations and heatsink, but the problem is still here. Are there any advices or ideas, how to solve it?
The notebook is 3 years old, so the warranty is gone and i don't want to buy new PC.
    A Lot of thanks, S.Martin.

Um, have you actually compared benchmarks of other 8600m GT cards?
They aren't very good in the first place.
There is nothing to compare, i see a graphic performance slowdown in everything, and detailed list from gpu-z. I've found a problem, now i need the solution.

  • Could MBPro Nvidia 8600M GT card problems be caused by Nvidia drivers?

Just got back from the Authorized Apple tech shop, where they tested my MBPro 15" 2.4Ghz with Nvidia 8600M GT with 256MB vram, using the special Nvidia test software. They hook your MBPro to an external HD with the test software on it.
They tested my MBPro and the results said the video card WASN'T defective or affected by the known defects.
When the tech said "everything's normal", I said that it may not be eligible for the free replacement program, it may have cleared all the Nvidia tests, and the video card might not be "officially" defective, but if there's one thing the display on my $1800 MBPro is NOT is "normal".
I insisted the tech guy look at my MBPro in action, scrolling down and up longish text and web pages. Took him about 3 seconds to "get it", i.e. what I'd been describing as the dizzying ripples, where the text "bulges" up and out at you as you scroll up and down.
He said, Yeah, wow, I guess you do have something there. But you're still not eligible for the replacement program.
I said I wasn't interested in getting the logic board replaced, in fact I'd prefer NOT to have to leave the MBPro for any length of time. But I was not ready to hear someone say it was "normal".
I said I'd had just about every Mac ever made, including a few recent Intels, and NONE of them ever had this "ripple" problem. I still have a Core Duo 20" iMac - no ripples - and a Core 2 Duo Macbook - no ripples - and I asked the tech what he could make of that.
He said hold on a sec, and went onto his brand new 24" iMac and, lo and behold, he said "Well, yeah, I see what you mean by those ripples. I'd never noticed it before."
So he called over the other tech guy and they looked at the ripples up and down, and said that it might get annoying after 8 hours at your computer.
Then he said that seeing as the problem WASN'T there with the Intel Macs that had ATI cards in them, or Intel GMA for the Macbook, the problem just might be with the NVIDIA DRIVERS. He said it looks like a problem REFRESHING and REDRAWING the screen. And might be solvable in future releases of the drivers and/or the OS.
Anyone think it might be the NVIDIA drivers?

  • How do I add more RAM to my macbook pro 15 inch late 2008 model?

I am wondering if I ma able to add more RAM to my 15 inch MacBook Pro from late 2008. It currently has 2 slots each with 2GB of RAM each. Am I able to change those out with higher amounts of RAM for each slot? Or is this thing maxed out and i'm out of luck? Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks!
