Nvidia 8800 or ATI Radeon (x2 or x3)?

Hi,
I am new to Mac world, and about to order a Mac Pro configuration.
I am not sure what to choose for the videocard...?
2x ATI Radeon
1x Nvidia 8800
or 3x ATI Radeon ...?
What would be the criteria to choose the good config for my needs?
If I plan to use only 1 or 2 displays, is the nvidia enough?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Tom,
There is another thread (or three!) on the sleep / restart problem. And I don't have any more info than what is said here and on other forums and news outlets.
I would sit tight for now, at least until the 8800s are actually shipping (March 1?) and get your RAM 3rd party to save $$$. Not sure the difference between 2.8 and 3.0 is going to be big enough to justify. 3.2, yes, if you need cutting edge.
Keep your eye on AYM and Barefeats.

  • NVIDIA 8800GT or  ATI Radeon X1900 XT

Im in the market for a new graphics card form my Mac Pro. I was planning on the ATI but I now see there is a new Nvidia card so which would be the faster/better card to go with? I want the performance for use in Second Life as well as aperture.
I cant find a comparison between them so any advice would be welcome
    Thanks

The 8800GT is in the Apple store now as an upgrade option. Haven't found anyone yet who has actually obtained one and tried it in the pre-2008 versions of the Mac Pro, but other forum discussions here indicate it should at least be 'compatible'. Whether the Nvidia card can run at full performance in the older Mac Pro is undetermined. I think the older Mac Pro has a lower spec on the PCI Express slots.
I am using the ATI X1900 card right now in a December 2007 model Mac Pro, in Second Life, and it ROCKS. (Ceera Murakami is my SL name - I create whole sims for a living there). I get between 20 and 50+ FPS in SL with it. Typical FPS in a Human avatar (as opposed to a heavily scripted group of furries) is 30+ FPS. The only caveat with the ATI card and SL is that due to a driver issue (that ATI is supposedly well on the way to fixing with a new driver, expected this month), you need to set up Second Life's user preferences to only try to use 265 MB of the 512 that is actualy on the ATI card. Using the full 512 is reported to cause Second Life to crash.
Nvidia doesn't have a great track record for making OS X drivers that are compatable with Second Life. Just the opposite of their track record in the Windows world, where Nvidia is king and ATI drivers have issues.
If it was me, I'd wait until more info is in on the compatability of the Nvidia card with the pre-2008 Mac Pro, and on the viability of that card with the Second Life application. If you want a card that will definitely work now with the older mac Pro and with Second Life, get the ATI X1900 card and set SL's VRAM pref to 256.

  • Running ATI Radeon x1900 XT along with NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT Possible?

Can I run the ATI Radeon x1900 XT along with NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT together in my mac pro?

The X1900 would have to go in double wide slot, you would have to run one or both at 8x.
I think something like ATI 2600 might make more sense. The 8800GT is listed as discontinued (have a thread or two about it being EOL). So unless you have the 8800GT may not be an option anyway.
The 4870 + 2600 combo would be best I can think of for us with 1st gen now.
This assumes you simply need to drive 3 monitors. And don't want to wait and see if the Nvidia eVGA GTX 285 (doubtful) will support 1st gen EFI32's.

  • Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT and ATI Radeon X1900 XT

I have a Mac Pro 2,1 running 10.6.1 and BootCamp.
I had a Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT video card in it and it ran well under BootCamp.
    I installed a ATI Radeon X1900 XT.
Under BootCamp the 2 cards seem incompatible, with an error message that the driver on the Nvidia card has been disables due to an incompatibility with the other card.
Is there a solution for this?
If I wanted 2 cards inside would they both need to be the ATI's or Nvidia's?
    Thanks

Hi I would maybe get a Apple Upgrade Kit the GT 120 is 512MB's & dose not use all 16 lanes as it like to make you think & will work on 2006 Mac Pro's at $149.00 I would say if you just want more displays get two & eBay your old cards. Please know if you game you will want more power but if only for more displays this 1 slot card is great.

  • ATI Radeon HD 3650m vs. Mac Mini's Nvidia 9400m?

I've temporarily been using a Dell laptop w/ the specs of 2GHZ Intel 2 Duo processors, 3GB ram and ATI Radeon HD 3650 mobility(256mb). I miss using a Mac so I'm thinking of getting the new Mac Mini with 2GHZ processors, 4GB ram and Nvidia 9400m (256mb). Video card wise, which one would be more powerful? I tried looking for some comparisons between these two online but wasn't able to find any. Are they both about the same? or is one more powerful/faster than the other?
    Thanks in advance,
    J

They ought to be about the same, but I think the ATI has its own dedicated VRAM, which the mini does not. The mini's GPU takes some memory (256 MB) from the main RAM, so you have slightly less for utilization on the system. It is virtually impossible to notice though.

  • NVIDIA GeForce 120 or ATI Radeon X1900... which is better?

    Hi-
I currently have the ATI Radeon X1900 graphics card installed in my Mac Pro 2.26 Nehalem. I'm not having any issue's with the card except that the fans turn On quite frequently, and they're a little loud.
I'm not using it for any games, etc... My primary use is with Pro Tools (a music DAW application).
The ATI Radeon X1900 is running a Apple 30" display and a Sony Bravia 46" LCD.
If I replaced the ATI Radeon X1900 with a NVIDIA GeForce 120, would I be asking for trouble?
    Thanks in advance.

If I replaced the ATI Radeon X1900 with a NVIDIA GeForce 120, would I be asking for trouble?
If your Mac Pro came with ATI Radeon X1900, then it needs a card with EFI-32 firmware. The NVIDIA GeForce 120 has EFI-64 firmware, and won't work in the pre 2008 Mac Pro. The only upgrade for early Mac Pros is the ATI Radeon HD 4870
    <http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB999ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MTA4MzU2NTc>
(Despite what Apple says, it will work in any Mac Pro.)
You will need a Mini DisplayPort adapter for the second display,

  • Choosing iMac model.  Nvidia 8800 hotter than ATI 2600 ?

I'm just about to buy a 2.8GHz 24" iMac and am trying to decide whether to upgrade to the NVidia 8800 Graphics card or not.
I'm mainly trying to make it as future-proof as I can by putting in a higher spec card now, and also I guess Snow Leopard (with OpenCL) should be able to make much better use of the NVIDIA card than the ATI one.
I'm happy with the cost involved, but I'm concerned that the 8800 (being a more powerful card) may run hotter in normal (i.e. non-gaming) use compared to the 2600.
Could anyone offer an opinion on this? Do you think I'm likely to experience more fan noise with an 8800 fitted compared to a 2600?
    Thanks
    Steve

It does run hotter, fans are still inaudible unless right next to it (ear pressed where it will feel the heat).... now here's the thing: The fan speed won't increase noticeably even under extreme load.
To answer your question, if I focus on it, I can hear the fans (right now). If I reach up and touch the top (around top left) it's warm to the touch, and I can barely feel a warm breeze coming out
If i were to fire up Second Life (game) for about 10-20 minutes - it gets uncomfortably warm to the touch along the top edge (quick), and I could feel but barely hear more air being pushed out.
Me and a friend launched Second Life from openGL profiler - she (ATI 2600, 2.8/4m) was hitting around 40-50 FPS, I was hitting 120-180 (these were on a private estate (somewhat controlled environmentals), both set to level 3 quality - kinda apples to apples as best as we could).
I can't really comment on the openCL enhancements to come, It's a severely crippled 8800 (GS) - so I'd not put a lot of weight behind the OpenCL acceleration. It's not a Quadro.
I was under no illusions that it was a gaming machine or a production 3D/graphics workstation tho - it's good enough for casual gaming/semi-pro use with some decent capabilities, don't expect too much from it tho.
There is one of the mac fan sites that tracks the average days of refresh - roughly when to expect the next big "refresh" from Apple - maybe someone else can remember where it is... (something like mid jan/late spring roughly - with some exceptions).
Last thing I'd want is to have ordered the 8800 as a CTO (not refundable) to find out 5 days later a 9800 with 1 gig on a slick nvidia chipset was replacing it. And that they had replaced the mighty mouse.
The iMac 8800/3.06 is the quietest machine I've worked with, power wise - even when it is cranked to the hilt, and it gets hot, uncomfortably hot (that makes me jittery - which is why I'm glad I've got AppleCare). I could run SMC fan control or something to keep it cooler, but I'd prefer to see if Apple's got it right.
Anyhow... Good luck with it all. I plan on selling mine - maybe not tho, it would make a cool fishtank. (I'm learning I'm just not an Apple person, tho I'm still trying).

  • Upgrade MacPro1,1 with ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB and Open GL 1.7.7. to recommended system requirements for heli simulator: OpenGL Version 2.1 compatible 3D-graphics card from NVIDIA or ATI with 512MB.

I want to install a helicopter simulator into my MacPro1,1 with ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB and Open GL 1.7.7. Recommended system requirements for the heli simulator are: OpenGL Version 2.1 compatible 3D-graphics card from NVIDIA or ATI with 512MB (at least as fast as NVIDIA 8600, 9400 or ATI Radeon HD 2400). Is there such a graphics card available that will work in my Mac Pro?

Are you really still running 10.6.3? you will need 10.6.5+ so do that and make a clone.
ATI 5770 from Apple Store - like 1000s of others have done and in the comments section on the store page.

  • Nvidia GeForce4 Ti 4600 or ATI Radeon 9800 Pro for G4 "Sawtooth"?

Which video card would be the best 2x AGP upgrade for a G4 "Sawtooth" that sometimes uses Photoshop 6 in OS 9 Classic mode, an Nvidia GeForce4 Ti 4600 or an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (or something else)?

  • ATI Radeon X1900 vs Nvidia Ge Force 6600

I predominantly edit video, create graphics using Adobe CS2 and animate and composite using After Effects.
I currently have a Nvidia GeForce 6600, and I was wondering if the ATI Radeon X1900 will be a significant upgrade. Has anyone used both of these cards and noticed one was better than the other?
Also in system profiler the GeForce 6600 is listed as a PCI card, so this should mean that I can install the ATI Radeon X1900 G5 Mac Edition?
    thanks.

Adding additional RAM will definitely help. AE7 and higher can address up to 3 GB of RAM by itself, and this is directly related to the length of the RAM preview you can do.
If you're doing a RAM preview (or a render) in AE, open up Activity Monitor located in /Applications/Utilities. What you'll notice is that most of your CPU is not being used effectively. Nucleo & Nucleo Pro launch background instances of AE and this causes your CPUs to be fully utilized, hence the reduction in time needed to do a RAM preview or a render.
One of my favorite features is the Speculative Preview that does RAM previews in the background without the user having to invoke them. It automatically RAM previews your work area, and if you make a change to something, it throws out the frames that need to be updated and immediately starts RAM previewing the new frames. So, by the time you're ready to preview your work area, it's probably already been rendered!
The background renderer is also great. You put a composition into the render queue and Nucleo Pro starts rendering it in the background. This means that you can go back into AE and keep working on something else rather than having to wait until AE finishes rendering what's in the queue.
Take a look at the product overview in the link in my previous post so you can see if it's right for you. There's also a demo version that watermarks everything so you can get a feel for how it'll fit into your workflow.
If you decide that you don't need all the features that Nucleo Pro has, you can get the standard Nucleo which does RAM previews only for AE 7 and 6.5. If you're upgrading to AE CS3, this basic functionality is built-in, so you won't need Nucleo at all except for the additional features that Nucleo Pro offers.
In GPU accelerated programs like Motion, the memory on the video card can matter. Each element is treated as a texture and has to fit in the video card's onboard memory for best performance. If you have many elements that you're working with, it's conceivable that you'd fill up the card's memory and hurt performance. For a G5, the only available 512MB card is nVidia's QuadroFX 4500 which is incredibly expensive. It was only available as an option at the time the computer was built, so to get one now means you have to get it as a replacement part, and that'll set you back ~$1,500. Not worth it, in all but extreme cases.

  • Graphics card for PM G5 AGP-ATI Radeon 800 vs Nvidia Geforce 6800

Any comments as to which of the two cards ATI Radeon 800 vs Nvidia Geforce 6800 is better suited for Photoshop-Aperture work?
I need to upgrade from a Nvidia 5200 that does not support Aperture and want to support at least one 30" + one 23" Apple cinema displays.
My PM is an AGP one, so these are the two high end contenders on the retail market.

I have the 6800GT, which works fairly well for me. I think the X800 is overall a slightly faster card, depending on what is benchmarked. Here is something you might want to look at:
    http://www.barefeats.com/radx800.html
I don't know if you should pay more attention to the gaming benchmarks or the Motion rendering benchmark. I haven't seen any Aperture tests of these products. But I imagine if I was upgrading I would probably go for the X800. One thing I like about the 6800GT is it supports two 30 inch monitors. Unfortunately it takes up 2 slots. I have a pair of SATA cards in my Dual 2.5, so there go all my slots.

  • Which Video Card for MDD - Nvidia or ATi Radeon?

Mac nVidia GeForce 4 Ti 4600/Ti4600 128MB Video Card G4
    BRAND NEW
I saw this item on eBay, and it looks like a good deal, but elsewhere on this forum someone said the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro was preferred for the Mirror Drive Door model.
The NVidia seems to have the best price. Assuming either are compatible (need AGP) which would be recommended, and why?
My present card is 64MB. I would hope that one with 128MB would improve performance with my Final Cut Express and 3D programs, such as Carrara and SketchUp, and give better results with an LCD monitor (and the card supports dual monitors, I think)
    many thanks,
    K.

    Hi Keith-
The biggest problem with the Geforce4 Ti is lack of Core Image support. This is of major importance in OS X, important to some graphics/video editing applications and is indicative of a GPU that is more powerful than the cards that don't support Core Image.
The Radeon 9800 Pro is a card that supports Core Image, and does so with ease.
For applications, Quartz Extreme is a given, but Open GL is also of concern. The Radeon 9800 Pro scores higher in Open GL benchmarks than the Geforce4 Ti.
As for 3D, shaders are of importance. The Radeon cards often offer better shader support than the Geforce cards. This is true when comparing the Geforce4 Ti and the Radeon 9800 Pro.
Not only is the architecture of the Radeon 9800 Pro better, 8 pixel pipelines vs. 4, but the drivers for the Radeon are superior. In fact, it is a gamers secret in some applications, to use Radeon shader drivers to get better performance out of their Geforce cards.
Not to be overlooked, but the amount of VRAM is not as important as the GPU clock speed, and the memory (VRAM) speed. The Geforce4 Ti has a GPU of 300mhz, and DDR VRAM at 325mhz (effective 650mhz).
The Radeon 9800 Pro has a GPU clocked at 378mhz, and DDR VRAM clocked at 337.5mhz (effective 675mhz).
Again, the Radeon 9800 Pro is superior in architecture.
Both cards can support dual displays, both having a DVI and a VGA port. A big difference is if you use OS X Leopard. Again, the Radeon card stands supreme, with many OS 9, or "legacy" Geforce cards loosing dual display ability in Leopard. This problem is often reported here.
If, however, the majority of your work is in OS 9, the Geforce4 Ti is a better card, with better native support +in OS 9+. The Radeon 9800 Pro came much later than the last OS 9.2.2, so it doesn't have the benefit of native 3D drivers. It works fine as a basic graphics card in OS 9, but doesn't support accelerated 3D as well as the Geforce4 Ti.
As for price, since we're comparing flashed cards, the Radeon 9800 Pro costs the same (as the Geforce4 Ti) from a very competent, reliable seller, though you have an extra $10 in shipping.

  • 1 ATI Radeon X1900 XT or 2 NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT

I am building a couple of new MacPros and want your feedback regarding getting 1 ATI Radeon 1900 graphics card or two Nvidia 7300 cards. These cards will be feeding two 23 (or Dell 24") displays and running FCP, Motion, DVDSP, and Shake. We edit DV and HDV primarily.
Is more better in this situation or is the ATI a better bet. Being that Motion runs much of its real-time effects from the graphics card which of these solutions is better for Motion?
    Thanks for the input!
