Nvidia 9600M GT doesn't work
Hello,
First, I would like to tell you I'm a French girl and my english isn't very very good so... be lenient please
This is my problem : 2 weeks ago I reinstall a game (World Of Warcraft). When I started it, it was slow, run with low FPS (frame per second) so it was impossible to play.
My machine is a MBP with two graphics cards Nvidia 9400M + Nvidia 9600M GT, RAM 4Go-DDR3, Intel Core 2 Duo...
I've look many forums, most of them tell that it is necessary to select "Higher Performance" in System Preferences > Energy Saver.
I did that, but my game remains with low FPS.
I think the game doesn't use both cards. Maybe Nvidia 9600M GT doesn't work, I don't know.
So, if you know a manipulation to force the MBP to use the second graphic card, thank you to reply me :]
Hi, Mazima. The MBP can't use both GPUs at once — it always uses one or the other. If you've switched to the Higher Performance setting in Energy Saver and can play the game at all, your 9600M GT is working. But if it hasn't made a dramatic difference in frame rates when you're playing WoW, there's something else going on.
IS WoW the only thing running on your computer? If not, quit all other applications and see whether that helps with your frame rates. Experiment with different settings within the game. And see whether you can find any useful information in WoW's own forums, assuming there are forums related to it.

Nvidia optimus KMS doesn't work
Hi all! I am on an HP Notebook with Nvidia Optimus. Displays are connected to the intel gpu, and I am using bumblebee+proprietary nvidia driver. The intel driver is i915.
Since the system is using the intel card to manage the screens, I though I could use KMS. But referring to this post on stack exchange:
http://superuser.com/questions/223094/h … ms-enabled
and also to the fact that plymouth doesn't work at boot (but strangely it works on shutdown) I found out that KMS does not work. Also, if i add "i915" to MODULES
in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf not only it still doesn't work, but also tty's do nothing. Gnome starts, but if I do CRTL+ALT+F2 or similars I only see a blinking underscore and no login screen. And if I try to write something nothing happens.
So the answer is:
If I use i915 as X gpu, but I have installed proprietary driver for use with Bumblebee, can I turn KMS on?

NVIDIA Graphic Card doesn't work on T430S with Windows 8
My T430S laptop runs Windows 8 and has a NVIDIA graphic card. Somehow I was never able to enter the NVIDIA control panel and got the error message below. I checked the setting in BIOS and it seems that NIVDIA Optimus mode is not availale on Windows 8. I updated the most recent driver released in Feb 2013 from Lenovo but it didn't solve the problem. I was wondering how I could use the NVIDIA on my compueter.

Solved!
Go to Solution.Hi, jumper1127
There is also a BIOS update availabe for your machine that came out around the same time as the Optimus driver. That can be found here and may help your issue.
Best of luck. Let me know how it goes

Compositing in KDE sometimes doesn't work on Nvidia hardware
I tried searching whether similar issue was already discussed on the forums, but didn't find anything; sorry if I missed it.
I have two different systems with Nvidia hardware, one with a 9500M GS, and another one with a GTX 580. After updating to KDE 4.11 (as far as I remember, this issue started appearing at about that time; now it still happens with KDE 4.12) compositing in KDE sometimes doesn't work. By "sometimes" I mean that once in a while I boot the computer and compositing isn't working, then I reboot and everything is fine. Sometimes hitting Alt+Shift+F12 twice helps, but sometimes it doesn't. I didn't gather statistics, but it seems to happen on the 9500M GS system more often than on the GTX580 one. On the former it happens once in about three boots, while on the latter it's something like once per ten boots, but I may be wrong.
I use proprietary driver, since I sometimes use the computer for gaming, and the opensource driver is still not quite up to the task. Btw, games work fine even when compositing doesn't work.
I haven't noticed any similar issue on my other machine with Intel graphics.
If anyone could help in identifying the cause, I would be much obliged, because I have no idea where to start searching.Good guess but even if I miss the word or any text, in normal use it still brings up the menu (with options limited to 'zoom in' and 'zoom out'). When I'm not getting the menu for word correction I'm not getting any menu in the body of the document at all - it's strange!

Upgrades 1 and 2 are very disappointing. My system has NVidia SDI and BMD Extreme 3D both installed. After upgrades NVidia SDI doesn't work and the BMD doesn't do 3D.
Again, is there any real testing done before a release or is it just left to the paying customers to find the bugs. Frankly I need to get work done. This is the most recent info I've found on using the SDI outs ... and yes, I do hope this works easy, more obvious, and more reliable for people with the next release. They have acknowledged here that this is not always functioning properly for all setups and all external "tools" at this time. Which is about as much as they could do really.
Advanced dual-monitor setup
The advanced dual monitor setup uses nVidia Quadro SDI technology to allow for real-time 10- and 12-bit output over Single Link or Dual Link SDI. The nVidia Quadro SDI setup requires a 64-bit Windows 7 system.
Connect the DVI or DisplayPort output to the display you want to use for the SpeedGrade workspace.
Use either a Single Link or Dual Link SDI output from the NVIDIA SDI card to connect with external waveform and other monitoring devices, and your reference monitor or projector.
In SpeedGrade, select Settings > Display.
In the SDI Output section, change signal and format settings according to your desired output format settings.
Select the Enable option.
FAQ: How many outputs on the nVidia GPU can be used in parallel?
Only two outputs at a time can be used in parallel. The SDI card is routed through the Quadro GPU and thus takes one DVI or DP output. The other output can be used for the workspace display. The additional DisplayPort is not active in parallel.
Tip: Combining local footage display with a projection setup
To give the operator an accurate local display in parallel to another display or projection system, a signal split on the SDI output is recommended. This is the recommended way to monitor a signal through external waveform and vectorscope devices.
Using multiple monitors also requires an understanding of the odd way SpeedGrade "references" multiple monitors in the setup section. So you have to figure out how to set those numbers for the second display AND the above info on SDI to get it to work. Note, basically they suggest running two monitors and if you need more ... run a splitter on one channel outside the computer. So say your external scopes and broadcast monitor would run off one output from the computer, connected to some external box.
As for the two monitor setup, SpeedGrade assumes 1920x1080 monitors ... and that the interface shall be on the Primary monitor as determined by the computer system. So when setting the numbers in the dual monitor setup, you use "Top" to tell Sg the * relative * position of the top left pixel of the second monitor to the primary monitor. The " 1 " pixel is the primary monitor's upper-left pixel, all else is computed from that point, going to the right and down. In my case, my monitors are stacked, primary on the bottom, program monitor on top. So I set the "top" number to -1080 so Sg "knows" the top left pixel of my second screen is 1080 pixels "earlier" (negative) than the primary top left pixel.
As the two monitors are relatively in line vertically, the "left" number is " 0 ". And as the second monitor is 1920x1080 I put those numbers in the height/width area. SpeedGrade ... normally ... understands the basic pixel dimensions of the primary monitor, but you have to tell it the size of the secondary one. If your secondary is say 3,840 × 2,160, you'd put that in the width/height, and compute (depending on where your top-left secondary pixel is from top-left primary pixel) the figures above. Trip up on any of the above, you get ... bizarity. Truely.

Canon mini Disk camera doesn't work if external drive connected
A long story. Anyway, I have a MacPro Intel Dual Core 266 Ghz with 5 Gbs RAM, 4 internal hard drives HD1~HD4 (HD1 OSX 250 and three 500Gb) and two external HD5 (two partitions~HD5 & Time Machine Backups) and HD6 (1 Tb each).
I've been using a Canon mini DV video camera FV-M10 (Firewire 400) for live video (Skype/iChat) and also for importing video into Final Cut Express, After Effects or iMovie up until a few days ago. Both "live" video and from the recorded mini cassette tape. Then all of a sudden not one of the software recognized my camera anymore. I tried both Firewire 800/400 and USB2 connections using a few different cables. In Skype...(sometimes) it automatically shows the name FV-M10 in the camera slot, but the screen is black. No, I checked if I left the cover on. I checked my Sony WX-5 digital camera and see if that is recognized. Yes, both pics and AVCHD videos are seen using the USB connection.
The problem started like this.
I was downloading a file. Had to work for an hour and when I came back upstairs. I noticed that the screen was frozen. So, I shut the Mac down. And when I started it again, well nothing happened except for a grey screen. A half~sized cursor was stuck up in the top left. But, my mouse also had a cursor which was movable.
It wouldn't even recognize the OSX Install Disk holding down "C" or "Option". Only starting with "Shift" held down, "Safe Boot" could I use the basics like Mail, Safari, Firefox. NO sound and no video. Tried a few times as well as cleaned my OSX HD1 hard drive and re-installed from "Safe Boot" mode". So, I had it sent into Apple Tokyo for repairs. Apple put in a new board. Great! I came it back in two days. I cleaned the OSX hard drive and re-installed Mac OSX with the up-dates as well and got some of my main backed up stuff Mail, bookmarks, address book etc. It started fine. But, when I went to use Skype, iChat, iMovie or Final Cut Express they still couldn't recognize my camera. I had been using the Canon FV M10 camera for a few years with both external hard drives on. There were never any problems until just before I sent it into the shop.
There was only one way to use my camera. Un-Plug the external HD6. Then the camera functions fine. but remember I had been using this camera with both HD's for around two years without any problems.
Notes on symptoms: and what actions I took.
Front connections: FW400 Canon camera. FW800 (Tried connecting HD6)
Rear Connections: USB2 1) MidiMan 2 x2 2) mouse 3) Canon Printer
FW400 HD5 FW800 (tried HD6)
With HD6 Connected.
iMovie 11 9.02 : Start iMovie O.K. No camera on. Turned camera "on" then "No Camera Connected" notice came up. (did this a few times) Turned camera off. Quit iMovie.
2nd start: Camera On. iMovie freezes. Spinning Colored beach ball. I then Force Quit Option-Apple-ESC
iMovie shows (not responding) When I turn off the camera. (not responding) disappears and iMovie is working again. But, "No Camera Connected" shows again. Quit!
Un-Plugged (Ejected) HD6.
When I un-plugged HD6, (tried both the front and rear connections). iMovie still on.
"No Camera Connected" I Quit iMovie.
Re-start iMovie: Camera on… Live video and record miniDV tape can both be seen.
Skype: Both live video and mini DV tape recording even plays back over Skype screen.
iChat (same as Skype) O.K.
Since Apple replaced the board 661-3932 Card Video, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT which cost just about $X00.00 (¥XX,000). I assume that they don't also check all the connections etc. I mean from the connector to the video board.
The call to Apple Tokyo today.
Just talked to Apple (Mac) Tokyo about my computer problem. Seems like they're trying to squeeze their way of more repairs by saying I have a hard drive configuration problem. But it doesn't seem like that! I worked with it 2~3 hours today...and here is the basic problem.
I've used the Canon FV M10 mini DV camera with Skype, iChat, iMovie and FCEx for few years (HD6) is over a year old-the most recent add on) with no problem. With both external 1Tb hard drives. And Apple said that it's a 3-party problem. (different makers etc.) But, it's NOT! Yes, they put in a new board. But, I'd say the problem is from the connection (where I plug the cable into the Mac) to the board.
When I connect HD6 (1Tb ext hard drive). FW 800 (either back or front connection) the video camera doesn't work in Skype, iChat, iMovie, or Final Cut Express. If I eject and Un-Plug HD6 all of them work fine. The camera "live" or the camera playing back the mini DV tape video.
Wouldn't this be a problem between the connections (front & back) to the new video board? Or does anyone have an answer. Apple seems to have said, "We can't help you". Please someone help! thanks+My mini isn't responding to startup commands like "C" or "D" from the keyboard.+
You'll need a wired usb keyboard for these commands to work -- and the Apple Aluminum keyboard won't work either.
But just about any PC usb keyboard will work. Alt maps to Option and Win-key to CMD. -
Very Very long ping time, only on arch, and preload doesn't work
Arch is the most amazing Linux system I have ever used. I get like a 30 second boot time from start to finish, i'm just wowed.
I am using arch64, and have only 2 problems!
1. I have like a 32ms ping, for any site, toooo big. I have a 3com NIC card which Is currently being used as eth1, and an nvidia network controller on my board eth0. The nvidia controller doesn't work right, so i am using the 3com, with a huge ping time
2. preload isn't working. I have 3gb of RAM, and AMAZINGLY only 400mb of RAM is being used, with 9 tabs in firefox open, compiz-fusion, gnome desktop. DAMN! I want more RAM being used, what is wrong with this?? (the problem is that things start up a little slow, so it must mean it is not staying in the RAM)
Please tell me what I can do to fix these problems!
EDIT: Could it have something to do with the groups I am in, or the preload.conf settings, or the rc.conf file?
Last edited by savagenator (2008-03-19 23:27:03)I saw your latency thingy... though that aint so bad

64 bytes from fk-in-f147.google.com (209.85.129.147): icmp_seq=1 ttl=242 time=146 ms
Pinging from norway to... wherever that node is.
and compare that to a norwegian host
PING www.sau.no (194.63.248.23) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from web.domeneshop.no (194.63.248.23): icmp_seq=1 ttl=47 time=86.6 ms
all in all, you should not be so annoyed unless your used to sub 10 ms ofc.. but this is still very quick for a webhost, atleast i think so. -
As hwd doesn't work anymore... [SOLVED]
As hwd doesn't work anymore, I have a problem with installing and maintaining Xorg on my Arch machine. I recently reinstalled Archlinux on my desktop machine, and was unaware that Xorg had been updated.
So when I tried to do my normal installation routine of installing all the necessary drivers, xorg and hwd, I ran into a problem. When I ran hwd -u + -xa, it said No X server installed. I searched around and found out that hwd was not supported any longer.
So I figured i'd just do the manual configuration of Xorg. So I ran X -configure, and then ran the server. Everytime I did this, the computer would freeze up upon entering the environment.
So I tried doing nvidia-xconfig, and ended up actually getting into the environment, but after all the xterm windows had popped up, it froze again everytime.
After reading abit articles on the subject, I tried letting Xorg simply use HAL for it's hardware recognization. This time it worked, and I was able to enter the environment with no problem. So I went with this alternative, and installed Openbox.
Now, the problem shows up when I enter the environment. I can clearly see that there's somewhat of a problem with the graphics. So I tried configuring a minimal xorg.conf to run along side HAL. This still didn't fix the problem. The problem is, there are areas of the screen that are SLIGHTLY blurry. For example, if I write something in xterm, then move it to certain parts of the screen, the text becomes mildly blurry. It's not a big problem, just irritating. But this little problem may be an indication of a bigger problem. I'm sensing I don't have 3D capabilities, but haven't tested yet.
Another thing is; When I write something in xterm while in the environment, and I hold down the backspace button... Xorg simply crashes without any particular error.
Anyway, my point is; I had an idea that, is there some way to make hwd recognize the xorg server as a older version, making it configure a file for it? I've never had any problem with xorg up until this new update, which irritates me alot, making me want to find some other distrobution of linux.
I hope someone can help me fix this.
Last edited by SomeoneWithAPurpose (2009-05-15 22:24:17)you could roll back your Xorg version to continue using hwd in the meantime...
I'm assuming you've followed http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … _xorg.conf to try without xorg / with minimal xorg. Have you ensured that your drivers are up to date? I would attempt reinstalling video drivers, trying HAL again with NO xorg file, and if that fails, try it with minimal xorg.
Hopefully someone comes along with a more concrete solution...I'm just hoping to steer you down a path of some new ideas (if you havent already tried this...)
I had some trouble with the latest version. Reinstalling video drivers and running with no xorg.conf was the fix...I know you said you tried this same thing, but you havent specified how new your drivers are or anything... Good luck and free bump! -
[SOLVED] - xset at startup doesn't work
I use the following command to set my screensaver options
xset dpms 30 60 300
After reading the Arch wiki, I found out that this can be made permanent by adding this to the xorg.conf or putting it in ~/.xprofile

That may get around the problem bernarcher describes...

It would be nice to find out why the settings was being set to "0".

Win 7 Brightness doesn't work after graphics update
Hey,
I have a late-2010 MacBook Pro running Bootcamp 4.0 with Windows 7 64-bit. My graphics card is the nVidia GeForce 320m. I looked online recently and found that there was an update available for my graphics card (previously I had the one that comes with bootcamp, which is from 2009 I believe--quite outdated you see). So I installed it, hoping for better DX11 support, etc... It installed fine, but now my display is stuck on 100% brightness, when before I could adjust it with the F1 and F2 keys. When I try using the keys it shows the Apple popup with the slider moving, but the brightness doesn't change. I went into Control Panel > Power Settings and tried adjusting it from there, with no luck. The nVidia Control Panel doesn't have any satisfactory controls to do this either. It must be, of course, that the driver update changed things, but I'm not sure how to rectify the situation. I uninstalled the Apple Driver-Display from Control Panel and then re-installed from the Bootcamp files, but it didn't help. I've heard some talk about Apple Cinema Display, but I'm not sure if that's the same thing as the Display and whether I should be looking for a driver for it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!I've come to the same conclusion. I tried installing different versions of the driver, but they all introduced some problem or other. It seems the only way to have everything work correctly is to use the old driver they provided. Too bad, really. Especially because I tried installing the Windows 8 preview, and unless the release version has more compatibility (unlikely), it won't work on my MacBook Pro.
For my next computer I'll follow Shootist007's advice and just buy a PC. I haven't been impressed by my mac, and OS X needs a little more work IMO.
Sorry I couldn't provide more help to anyone with the same issue! It seems Apple released this computer with an outdated driver and then abandoned support for it. -
Plymouth doesn't work [SOLVED]
Hello!
Plymouth doesn't work.
I installed plymouth, added plymouth to HOOKS array in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf file, added "quiet splash" to /etc/default/grub file and ran "sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg" followed by "sudo plymouth-set-default-theme -R solar".
File /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
# vim:set ft=sh
# MODULES
# The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are
# run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules
# in this array. For instance:
# MODULES="piix ide_disk reiserfs"
MODULES=""
# BINARIES
# This setting includes any additional binaries a given user may
# wish into the CPIO image. This is run last, so it may be used to
# override the actual binaries included by a given hook
# BINARIES are dependency parsed, so you may safely ignore libraries
BINARIES=""
# FILES
# This setting is similar to BINARIES above, however, files are added
# as-is and are not parsed in any way. This is useful for config files.
FILES=""
# HOOKS
# This is the most important setting in this file. The HOOKS control the
# modules and scripts added to the image, and what happens at boot time.
# Order is important, and it is recommended that you do not change the
# order in which HOOKS are added. Run 'mkinitcpio -H <hook name>' for
# help on a given hook.
# 'base' is _required_ unless you know precisely what you are doing.
# 'udev' is _required_ in order to automatically load modules
# 'filesystems' is _required_ unless you specify your fs modules in MODULES
# Examples:
## This setup specifies all modules in the MODULES setting above.
## No raid, lvm2, or encrypted root is needed.
# HOOKS="base"
## This setup will autodetect all modules for your system and should
## work as a sane default
# HOOKS="base udev autodetect block filesystems"
## This setup will generate a 'full' image which supports most systems.
## No autodetection is done.
# HOOKS="base udev block filesystems"
## This setup assembles a pata mdadm array with an encrypted root FS.
## Note: See 'mkinitcpio -H mdadm' for more information on raid devices.
# HOOKS="base udev block mdadm encrypt filesystems"
## This setup loads an lvm2 volume group on a usb device.
# HOOKS="base udev block lvm2 filesystems"
## NOTE: If you have /usr on a separate partition, you MUST include the
# usr, fsck and shutdown hooks.
HOOKS="base udev plymouth autodetect modconf block filesystems keyboard fsck nvidia"

Evdev Doesn't Work for the USB Mouse
Hey There,
I'm using xorg.conf because Xorg 7.3 doesn't do several things I need.. (keyboard layouts, nvidia driver, synaptics, etc..)
Any way, my xorg.conf used to work fine until I upgraded to 7.3 today.. I know that nvidia legacy (96xx) driver doesn't work because of the ABI change in this version, so I'm not mentioning about it..
The biggest problem I have right now is that my USB mouse doesn't work now with evdev.. I had to change evdev to mouse and protocol to auto instead which confuses and distracts me..
I think that evdev has some problems recognizing..
This is my xorg.conf file:

Paste from powerpoint doesn't work
Hi,
I'm working between powerpoint and pages. I'm trying to copy pictures from a powerpoint and paste them into my pages document. I've tried using the menu options to copy and paste and it still doesn't work. If i copy a google image and paste into pages it works. When I try copy and pasting text from the powerpoint to pages it works. the problem is solely w/ pictures.
note that I've tried this on my iMac same pictures same versions of pages (newest 5.5.1) and powerpoint (2011, 14.3.9)
please help.
ThanksI've updated and tried what you mentioend and it doesn't work as mentioned above i loaded the files on my iMac and it worked but still doesn't work on my macbook pro
