No. Open the App Store on one computer running Snow Leopard. Purchase and download Lion. On the other computer open the App Store, log on using the same Apple ID, re-download Lion at no extra charge.

You can use the two graphics cards, but it's only useful if you have more than two displays. It won't give you higher speed.

You can get a 5770 radeon ATI MAC card
Avoid the 5770 cards on ebay and Amazon - many are black market or manipulated cards.
Buy it from Apple online store or B&H photo or Macconection
And in my case, I was able to sell my old 2600 XT card on ebay for $65 and put that money toward a 5770 card (Which was about $230 minus the $65)
I installed the 5770 in my early Mac Pro 2 x 2.8 and it works great

No grounded outlets and the Mac Pro

I live in an older house w/o grounded outlets and have been using the small plug adapters that go on the end of the power cord.
What are the ill effects (if any) of using my new Mac Pro in this configuration?

I assume it (house) is not so old as to not have plumbing?
Get a 2 to 3 prong adapter with a ground tab. Connect a wire from the ground tab to a water pipe with a clamp for this purpose (from Home Depot) . Plug the MacPro into the now grounded outlet.

These ones use the screw for the cover plate to ground the adapter to the house, though you need to make sure there is a metal box and that box is grounded. Or use the pipe.

DLTs and the Mac Pro

Hooray! Apple fixed my DLT/scsi woes with the lastest DVSP upgrade. Lost a major client or two along the way. But I am so happy this is resolved. Keep up the god work Apple! This combo will gain new clients.

Yeah I have to agree! If you author professionally for a living you should probably be looking into other systems (give or take the level)... An option is a used Spruce Maestro or if you want to stay on Mac then look for a Sonic Creator (OS9) maybe. It's spec based and high-end. The already mentioned Sonic Scenarist is the daddy and you should really go that way if you can! Most authors and small houses usually go with Scenarist Studio and a software encoder. Canopus Procoder and/or CinemaCraft Encoder SP.
I'd also recommend you get Digigami Mpressionist Pro too...
Now, I use DVDAE in combo with dvdsp, Creator, Maestro & Scenarist but you may want to get a cheap mac and use that to output your DLTs from that system. Re-authoring is also possible along with other stuff but it's really a authoring system.
There are quite a few replicators out there that'll take DDP/CMF file sets on recordable media these days so if you're talking to customer services or sales maybe dig a bit further...

Upgrade for the Mac Pro imminent?

I want to buy an 8 core 3Ghz Mac Pro, to replace my trusty (but creaky) G4. I was about to order one, but then I came across loads of rumours flying about the web that Apple is about to release some upgrades to the Mac Pro line, apparently "any day now". Does anyone have any firm info? Am I better off waiting a while before I buy, just in case? And how long is "a while" likely to be, anyway?

So Hatter, if I may ask, what would be your advice? I need to get a new computer pronto: my G4 is getting a little long in the tooth, and I fear it's not long for this world. The Mac Pro's look very attractive, even at their current configuration, and I can afford the top model. Although everyone agrees an update to the range is inevitable, no-one agrees on when it is likely to be. I don't think I can wait a year, not even six months, on the other hand, I'd be foolish to buy one this week if an update comes out next week. Seeing as the top model Mac Pro only came out in April, maybe this will actually be the last to be updated, meaning if I get one now I wouldn't be losing out? If, as you suggest, the big rollout won't be for another year, I might as well get one now...

Final Cut Express HD and the Macbook Pro

I just purchased a Macbook Pro along with final cut express HD. After purchase I read that FCE HD won't work with the macbook pro. I was hoping to see if anyone knew if they were coming out with an upgrade to the universal version like they are with Final Cut Pro.

That will not work. Ian's solution is for dual core G5s and PCIe based iMacs. It does not address Intel based machines like the 2006 iMac and the MacBook Pro. These machines will have to wait till the end of March for the release of new Universal Binary software to run on them. It's possible FCE3 will never run and will need to be upgraded to another version. If you recently purchased FCE HD to run it on this new computer, I'd suggest, if you can, to return it until the position on the new software becomes clear.

New to the Mac Pro 8 quad questions

I am looking to buy a new mac. the Mac Pro looks good.
I need a computer that i can still put imovie HD6 and run it?
Can you do that on a mac Pro?
I use canon hv30 for filming in HD and capture into imovie HD 6 which i really enjoy using even though i do have the others. imovie 9
Sometimes even thought i have filled up my RAM on my imac, sometimes i still get the blue screen when capturing video onto the HD
I also use Creative suite 3 and would that be able to run on a new Mac Pro
I use dreamweaver for my web design stuff--although i am a beginner and i use photoshop and others.
I also ue ot to work on music recordings of bands
so i guess in summary
1. does the new mac pro be able to run imvoie 6 HD
2. will it run creative suite 3
3. or is it too much computer and stick with a imac

The Mac Pro is top of the line. If it won't, what pray tell would? What most want to know is how far to go in build to order options or stay with base model is all. And budget.

In most parts of the world, you can remove the side door with the Mac Pro 65 lb tower still running, and check whether fans are all running.
CAUTION: In the EU, the European commission has determined that you are too stupid not to put your finger in the fans, and the Mac Pro's plastic fans with pitiful 12 Volt motors are so dangerous it cannot be sold in the EU until a new model is released (possibly later this year). So this advice is not to be used in Europe.

If you buy a Mac Pro 2013, use the iMac for casual stuff and use the Mac Pro for media creation work.
Maxed out iMac with 4-core 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD PCIe is nice.
Mac Pro with 6-core 64GB dual graphics for $1000 more might run rings around it.
Why not look them both up on Geekbench.
Some people really need and like having two systems, maybe laptop (Air) and a more powerful system.

Home music recording- is the Mac Pro better for this than an iMac?

I know it seems like a daft question but if you were to recommend a Mac for a DECENT home studio and money were (within reason) nearly no object WHAT Mac would you recommend? I always believed that a good sized desktop would be better than an iMac or a MacBook Pro (which is what I have been using for just a hobby home recording set-up) but is this a myth?
Please advise because the Mac Pro looks SCARY. I mean- the options are vast but what DO I NEED as opposed to want? Thank you kindly for reading.

Ah, I see. I think an iMac should be sufficient. Just be sure to get more RAM than the stock 1GB. Apple's prices on RAM are pretty severe compared to other vendors, so I'd recommend adding RAM after purchase. If you search the iMac forum for "RAM UK", you should find recommendations on reliable vendors. Don't go with lowest price; there's nothing that can cause you fits with a computer system more than flakey RAM, so you want a vendor with a good reputation for quality. I'd suggest bumping the iMac to the maximum 4GB. As to screen size, I tend to prefer having two screens rather than one big one - you can put palettes on the second monitor - so if it's a choice and desk space is sufficient, consider a 20" iMac and a second 17" or 20" screen to go with it.
If you reckon the interface is enough to do the mic justice and that Logic Express or Pro would do when the musicians know and love Cubase then I am happy to help them learn more Mac-based software and get that instead as it is also cheaper and looks like it would make more sense to ME.
Unless they're wedded to Cubase, I'd think that Logic Express should work quite well. You may all want to take a trip to an Apple reseller and take a look at it.

An upgrade would seem logical only if the Safire isn't giving the quality you want or there aren't enough inputs.
I'd call your recommendation but I am in the UK and will probably talk to the nice folk at Dolphin Music in Newcastle as that is where I got the interface.
I wasn't sure where you were. If you are located in or near Newcastle-On-Tyne, you can find a list of authorized resellers here, or if you're near Manchester or Sheffield or don't mind taking a paddle down, you can drop by an Apple Store. You can then perhaps preview Logic Express before you decide. You might want to call before you make a special trip just to make sure your dealer can indeed demo LE.
Final recommendation; get really good microphones. Garbage in, garbage out, as they say, and having the right microphone, one that's suited for the instrument that's being recorded, is vital. The Neumann is of course high quality, but if you haven't already purchased, check around. You can find really good mics for less than Neumann charges; unless things have changed, you pay a bit of a premium for their reputation. AKG used to make really good mics, quite well suited for piano and acoustic guitar in particular, and there are no doubt others as well (my knowledge of specific models is rather out of date).

Do I have to pay twice for MAC OS X Lion for my iMac and MAC Air?

No. You can install Lion on all systems you own from a single purchase. Either copy the installer before you run it on the first system and transfer it to the other system, or purchase and download it on one system, then log into the App Store on the second system go to the Purchased tab and you'll be able to download the installer again without charge.
