Nvidia-dkms module for GeForce 610M

Hello everybody,
I always use nvidia-dkms package as driver for my GeForce 610M GPU
But recently when I try to load nvidia module modprobe produce this error:

  • Failed to load nvidia kernel module

When I try to start x it outputs the following error
Failed to load nvidia kernel module
I'm trying to use the new nvidia-beta drivers from AUR but the same error occurs with ordinary nvidia drivers and the nv drivers. Under xorg.conf I currently have 'nvidia' next to driver and I've also put nvidia in the modules section of rc.conf
when I try to modprobe nvidia is just outputs 'module nvidia not found'

Ended up booting into gnome using the vesa driver (max resolution was 800x600) and downloading the new nvidia beta setup from the nvidia website then going back into terminal and running it. Just had to download make from pacman and it compiled a new nvidia kernel module for me it seems. All works well with the new driver now.
    Thanks.

  • Nvidia module for custom kernel

Hi all. I've compiled a custom kernel using abs according to the instructions on the wiki, but I'm having a hard time installing the nvidia module using the instructions on the Nvidia page of the wiki. The install always aborts complaining of not being able to find the kernel source. I do have the kernel-headers installed:
    [root@myhost greg]# pacman -Ss linux-headers
    core/linux-headers 3.1.5-1 [installed]
Header files and scripts for building modules for linux kernel
I've also edited the nvidia.install and PKGBUILD files to point to the correct version file:
    [greg@myhost ~]$ cat /lib/modules/3.1.5-1-test/extramodules/version
    3.1.5-1-test
I've really searched hard, but can find no remedy. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

From what I can see, the only installable package that was built is linux-test-3.1.5-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz. That's with the PKGBUILD file supplied from /var/abs/core/linux as per the wiki.

  • [Solved] Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module

    Hi all,
I've just made the jump to arch and have a fresh install. I'm having trouble getting the nvidia drivers to work. I am currently using the nouveau drivers without issue.
The method I am using - after much trial - is:
    - uninstall nouveau and mesa lib
    - install nvidia package
    - remove nouveau module entry in mkinitcpio.conf
    - run `mkinitcpio -p linux`
    - edit .conf in xorg.conf.d with minimal required settings. Currently:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "device0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
    EndSection
I have installed the linux-headers package and tried reinstalling nvidia again

The only entry I found in `dmesg | grep nvidia` related to nvidia-drm, and seemed to say it was loaded successfully. I didn't save the exact entry and i've reinstalled nouveau now so that I could post this.
Any help much appriciated. I've been at this for a while. Learning a lot in the process!

Success! Several days of trying various things and I finally give in and make a post to this forum. One more attempt - which was only really so that I could add modprobe info to this post - and it works.
I had at some stage installed the driver xf86-video-nv, and this may have been causing the clash. I un-installed it, and followed the procedure above to reinstall nvidia.
I think the main hang up I'd had is that I had not been rebuilding my kernel image with mkinitcpio after installing nvidia during my previous attempts.
I hope some info in here helps some other stuck archer.
Edit: Thanks graysky. I had found the right nvidia driver using the arch wiki and followed this advice to remove the nouveau hook. Much appriciated.

  • Cannot load nvidia driver module [SOLVED]

OK so for some reason I can no longer load the nvidia (proprietary) driver.
I have a laptop with optimus, on board intel and discrete nvidia GTX680M. I use this laptop for cuda development so I don't care about games etc, I just need the driver loaded to debug and run my cuda  apps. bbswitch still works fine as does bumblebee which I don't use normally but I do have it setup and running in case. Also I didn't really work much on coding last week so not sure exactly when this started.
So here is what happens when I try to insert the nvidia module or use optirun:
    $ sudo modprobe nvidia
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'nvidia': No such device
    $ sudo insmod nvidia
insmod: ERROR: could not load module nvidia: No such file or directory

So in simple terms, the fix invovled ensuring the nvidia module is loaded before the bbswitch module. I'm not sure about the necessity of the things that follow but the fix may possibly also require removing bumblebee and possibly requires removing nvidia from repos and building the driver downloaded from nvidia.
This fix could be completely unrelated to the problems I was having with arch but I cannot verify the fix on arch specifically cos I installed every distro under the sun trying to get it all working and I got it to work on a non arch distro.
So... I'm not sure if I should really mark this a solved because I haven't/can't verify it on arch and technically the solution involved changing to another distro but in fact, I know it has absolutely nothing to do with arch since I saw the same behaviour on 3 other distros. If I have time, I will reinstall arch and verify but for the moment, I have a lot of work to catch up on now that I have a working nvidia driver I can actually use for dev
Anyway, what I think is going on is there is some bizarre issue with bbswitch that stops the nvidia driver from being found because on the current distro I have installed, if I have no bbswitch, no bumblebee and no nvidia modules loaded or services running etc. I can modprobe the nvidia driver and all works fine. I can then modprobe the bbswitch driver and that works too. IF I modprobe the bbswitch driver first and then modprobe the nvidia driver, I get this error that says the nvidia module cant be found. The location it prints is in some updates directory whcih is odd too because I installed from nvidia source and never installed updates at all and made sure that there were absolutely no repo nvidia drivers or updates etc.

Do you have any idea of what should be done to fix it? I don't want to use NVIDIA driver from their site neither nouveau, I want to use the one from the repo. If you know how to solve it, instead of only pointing the solution, also tell why this is happening, it will help me and other people with the same problem too!
If you need additional information please ask me.
    Thanks!!

karol, I'll try to add the section you wrote to the xorg.conf, but first I want to show the log of the crash:

About the lib32-nvidia-utils, I just installed because it's written in the wiki http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA#Installing: "Note: On 64 bit systems, For 32-bit programs to take advantage of nvidia-utils you must also install the equivalent lib32 package (for example lib32-nvidia-utils)."

  • Stock kernel isn't compatible with nvidia-dkms and nvidia-hook?

    Hello pals
I'm using linux-ice, linux-lqx and linux-ck kernels with nvidia-dkms and nvidia-hook. Everything is ok, with kde upping.
I've started from stock kernel. During the dkms (or hook, I don't remember) pacman says that nvidia and nvidia(dkms or hook) were incompatible... remove nvidia? I've selected yes
After it, stock kernel don't upps the kde... stays on black screen. Login on tty1, 2 or 3 is possible, with ctrl+alt+F1...F3, but, kde with kernel don't works
    no errors appears.
to force stock kernel been compiled by hook, I wait a while, when using the other kernels, and yesterday I did a "Syyu"
new kernel, new linux-headers too... but still blank screen
I only can use stock kernel and Nvidia driver, not dkms/hook installed one?

Ok, i know little about dkms / mkinitcpio hooks , but best option seems to try and build the nividia module manually to get more info.
    nvidia-hook gets sources from here : https://github.com/alucryd/mkinitcpio-hooks/ ,
    build ()
    _version=$(pacman -Qs '^nvidia$'|sed 's/^[^ ]* \|-[0-9]*$//g;2d')
echo "Building nvidia modules for ${KERNELVERSION} kernel..."
    dkms install nvidia/${_version} -k ${KERNELVERSION}/_arch
    echo "Ok."
    help ()
    cat<<HELPEOF
This hook rebuilds nvidia modules. It does nothing to the initrd image.
    HELPEOF
looks like all the hook does is run dkms install, try running that command manually to get more info.

  • Can't upgrade because of nvidia-dkms

    Hey all,
I'm trying to run pacman -Syu, which results in an error I cannot seem to find an answer to.
    The output is as follows:
    # pacman -Syu

error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
    :: nvidia-dkms: requires nvidia-utils=337.25
However, when I look what version of nvidia-utils I have installed, I get:
    # pacman -Q | grep nvidia-utils
    lib32-nvidia-utils 337.25-2
    nvidia-utils 337.25-3
When I try to reinstall nvidia-utils using yaourt, I get the following:
    # yaourt -S nvidia-utils
    resolving dependencies...
    looking for inter-conflicts...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
    :: nvidia-dkms: requires nvidia-utils=337.25
Does anyone have an idea about what is going wrong?
    Thanks in advance!

I am using the LTS kernel. I had this same issue on my laptop yesterday. On there, I fixed it by moving to the LTS kernel (at least until a new non-lts kernel comes available).
EDIT: Nevermind. I fixed it by reinstalling nvidia-libgl and lib32-nvidia-libgl. Display Manager now works!

  • Nvidia-304xx Module nvidia not found

    Hi,
I had a nvidia GTX 260 as primary gpu with the latest nvidia running.
Now I switched to an old GT 6600. Therefore I installed nvidia-304xx but modprobe nvidia fails.
    [pheinrich@ARCH ~]$ sudo modprobe nvidia
modprobe: FATAL: Module nvidia not found.
    [pheinrich@ARCH ~]$ pacman -Qs nvidia
    local/lib32-libcl 1.1-1

NVIDIA drivers utilities and libraries, 304xx legacy branch
    local/opencl-nvidia-304xx 304.121-2
OpenCL implemention for NVIDIA, 304xx legacy branch
I do not know what I have done wrong.

    I found it on
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA
For GeForce 6000/7000 series cards [NV40-NV4E, NV63-NV68], install the nvidia-304xx or nvidia-304xx-lts packages, available in the official repositories.
When I select the dropdowns on the nvidia website I get the 304.88 for that card so I think nvidia-304xx would be the right one.
I think there was something wrong during installation. If the nvidia-304xx wouldn't be compatible the nvidia module must be installed regardless.
    I will try nvidia.
    Edit 1
Something completly wrong here. I have installed the package nvidia now again.
[pheinrich@ARCH ~]$ sudo pacman -Qs nvidia
    local/lib32-libcl 1.1-1
OpenCL library and ICD loader from NVIDIA (32-bit)
    local/lib32-libvdpau 0.7-2

    local/lib32-nvidia-utils 337.25-1
    NVIDIA drivers utilities (32-bit)
    local/lib32-opencl-nvidia 337.25-1
    OpenCL implemention for NVIDIA (32-bit)
    local/libcl 1.1-3
OpenCL library and ICD loader from NVIDIA

    local/nvidia-utils 337.25-2
    NVIDIA drivers utilities
    local/opencl-nvidia 337.25-2
    OpenCL implemention for NVIDIA
    But "modprobe nvidia" prints
    [pheinrich@ARCH ~]$ sudo modprobe nvidia
modprobe: FATAL: Module nvidia not found.
Maybe it has to do with the situation that I had installed "nvidia" before then removed it an installed nvidia-304xx ?

  • [Solved]Setting up arch with Geforce 610m, not sure which drivers

Just as the subject states, I'm on an asus k53sd with a nvidia geforce 610m gpu and I'm not sure which drivers to install. I believe nvidia from the official repo is a necessary one but what else? There was also an intel based driver but I need to edit in what was since I can't remember.
    Last edited by cj360 (2013-10-21 22:37:21)

a GTX 610M is definitely not a legacy card. The 9800GT is, but yours definitely isn't. My laptop has a 480M, and still will be supported by the main drivers for a while. Even the 280 is still supported well in the latest drivers.
You are very likely using Optimus as pointed out by circleface. Especially as you mentionned using an Intel driver, I'm pretty sure you are on an Optimus laptop (like they almost all are since the past 3-4 years). Read this:  Optimus and this Bumblebee. You need a special configuration to have it work, involving optirun and prismrun.
You probably don't really need nvidia-xconfig especially if using Bumblebee. I think it does that by itself when it starts so you don't need to configure the hidden xorg server.

  • Windows 8 display driver for GeForce GT330M

With the latest BootCamp (version 5) released, I was hoping that Apple will include a newer displayer driver (for Windows 8). But from the looks of things, they included adisplay driver from September of last year... and I found that this runs games like L. A. Noire at an unplayable frame rate (even at minimum settings). Now, before BootCamp 5 came out, I tried upgrading the display to one from December 2012, and found that the game ran butterly smooth; except that after a while, it started giving me BSOD (with a huge unhappy face!)
Anybody know of any other drivers that could be used for GeForce GT330M (I have mid-2010 MacBook Pro...)
    Thanks,
    Tak
P.S. I did find a helpful artcile from Ars (http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2012/11/no-support-no-problem-inst alling-windows-8-on-a-mac-with-boot-camp/) and tried the driver there but the game still runs slow...

I always ignore the graphic card driver that Apple provides with Boot Camp. That's because you can use the latest driver that NVIDIA provides for your graphic card without any problem. You can download the latest driver for the graphic card in this site > http://www.geforce.com
It's important to keep the driver updated to get the maximum performance of the graphic card and to avoid problems in Windows

  • Build dkms modules on kernel upgrade

I have installed some dkms modules in my system. My problem is, when I upgrade the kernel and reboot, it seems that the dkms systemd service that autoinstalls the dkms modules is executed after try to load the modules, so I need to reboot my system again or load the modules manually.
    As I said, I have dkms.service enabled.
Is there a way to fix this? like a hook executed on kernel upgrade or a workaround in dkms.service?
    Thanks!

    Just for clarity:
progandy wrote:- install dkms-alx (and the kernel-headers)
    - install new kernel (and headers)
    - reboot --> dkms detects missing module and rebuilds it.
Will dkms re-install the net-driver after reboot, if no working network (due to missing module) is present? If so, it will solve all my (thinking) problems.

  • Memory modules for Msi Big Bang trinergy

    Hey forum,
i want to buy some memory modules for my trinergy mobo because the ones i had earlier also proved to be incompatible. I would like to ask you if there are any memory modules besides the ones recommended from the MSI site concerning my mobo. I am looking for a 2x2 gb ram kit with a heat dispenser so it can work around 1600mHz. Thank you in advance
P.S Is the list on the site the only one? i mean are there any updated versions of it with more high end memory modules tested?

Ideally you would provide us with your fullsystem specs first >>Posting Guide<<
From a memory perspective, the reason these modules have heatspreaders is mostly due to marketing and to impress the potential buyers. The secondary reason is that most manufacturers sell you overvolted and overclocked 1066 or 1333 chips on a 1600 marketed module that needs 1,65V instead of the standard 1,5V. Your memory controller is part of the CPU and natively only supports 1333 at 1,5V.
If you really insist, then at least get yourself a 1600 kit that does this speed at 1,5V. One of the modules that seem to work well are the CMZ4GX3M2A1600C9 from Corsair. From a user perspective, the mem modules from Crucial that you see in my signature come highly recommended as they have been proven to work on the P55 platform whenever used.
