Nvidia drivers crashing in Adobe Bridge, spinning pinwheel of death

Twice so far in Adobe Bridge my system will randomly lock up with the spinning pinwheel of death. The console shows these lines at the time of the freeze:

This obviously points to the Nvidia drivers crashing, but why? I'm currently using an Nvidia GTX 460 768MB in my Mac Pro, and I've never had this problem with any other applications. It seems to only be Bridge.

And you are assuming that the 460 will be supported of course which is not a given. The 570 and 670 seems to be okay and some use GTX 4xx but they also realized it can be iffy for support.

  • Mail and never ending spinning pinwheel of death! Help!

I'm running 10.5.6 on my 24'' aluminum/glass iMac, and when I open mail, I instantly get a spinning pinwheel of death that doesn't go away. I then have to force quit Mail, and if I open it again, the same thing happens.
This definitely *****, how would I go about re-installing mail? Is that the solution?

You don't need to reinstall mail, however, I do thing you need to reset it.
This is how you do it:
Quit mail (force quit it if necessary)
    Delete the following files:
    ~\library\Preferences\com.apple.mail.plist
    ~\library\Preferences\com.apple.mail.RSS.plist
Move the folder Mail from ~\Library to your Desktop
Launch mail. It will ask you to configure a new account, if it doesn't click on the Mail menu\Preferences\Accounts\(+) to add a new account and follow the on screen instructions to add an account. if you don't know how to add an account follow this tutorial:
    http://grumpynet.ath.cx/tutorials/configuremailforleopard/configuremail.php
If you need help finding the settings for your ISP check out this link or call your ISP:
    http://grumpynet.ath.cx/Articles/Mailservers/mailservers1.php
After doing this you should have your mail working normally again.
NOTE: if you have folders created in your computer you can recover them by copying the Mail folder you moved to the desktop earlier into ~\Library and replace what's there. The folder ~\Library\Mail contains all your email messages and attachments, you can browse it and take a look at its structure if you want, is actually pretty cool and can help you understand how you can recover messages in the future or from another computer
NOTE 2: the term ~\ means your Home Folder (the folder with the icon of a house and your user name under Places in Finder)
I hope this help you fix your problem. Please post back to let us know if this fixed your problem or if you need more help

  • MBPr Nvidia Drivers Crashing in Windows 7 (64-bit) False graphic switch?

    Hey Guys
This is my first posting here because I simply don't know what to do anymore. Yesterday I was playing Borderlands 2 on my MBPr 2.3ghz version with every thing setting on high (Physx and AO turned off or low) and resolution of 1680x1050 and it runs at 60fps constantly.
Later on, I checked my desktop and saw a notification that my Nvidia Drivers has stopped working and after that all my 3D applications were slower. Borderlands 2 only ran at 20 frames now with the same settings and other games just didnt run so well anymore.
I have tried updating my Nvidia drivers and I also tried rolling back to an older driver but the results remain the same. The notification of the drivers crashing has vanished because I wanted to archieve the message but when I wanted to see my stored archieved messages it wasn't there.
My computer still shows that I do have an Nvidia Geforce 650m and according to other sources the Intel HD Graphics cannot be used in bootcamp but I have a strong feeling it did switch to it.

UPDATE: I fixed this issue by reseting the SMC! Hope this helps if anyone else had this issue!

  • After upgrading to 2.6.28, any Nvidia drivers == CRASH

I finally did an update to my system, and now with 2.6.28, No matter which nvidia drivers I use, things work fine in Xorg for an indeterminent amount of time, then all the sudden, my screens blank and the box is completely unresponsive to ping.  At this point, touching the keyboard causes beeps.  Presumably the kernel has paniced.
I've tried nvidia-180.29-3, nvidia-173xx (173.14.17-2) nvidia-96xx(96.43.11-2) as well as getting nvidia drivers directly from nvidia's site, doing an uninstall through here, etc.  I know the issue is related to nvidia, since when I switch to vesa, the problem goes away.
Interestingly, the crash always seems to happen as a result of me typing on the keyboard.  For example, I will be using mutt in an mrxvt terminal, and as soon as I hit 'j' or 'backspace' the box crashes.  It never crashes when just using the mouse or not as the result of typing.  Of course, this only happens after around 30 minutes or so, as I am using this setup right now and typing is working fine.
Presumably the rest of the Arch community isn't hitting this or it would have been addressed by now.  My device is:

Actually I was wrong, this isn't a kernel panic, and may not even be related to Nvidia.
Xorg just plain crashes, and it does seem to be in keyboard handling code:

  • I keep crashing with Adobe Bridge. The data for the crashed thread has this line in it: CFRUNLOOP_IS_CALLING_OUT_TO_AN_OBSERVER_CALLBACK_FUNCTION

    CFRUNLOOP_IS_CALLING_OUT_TO_AN_OBSERVER_CALLBACK_FUNCTION
That's in the crashed thread text. Does anyone know what this is about? I actuallly get this same error on three of the four Mac in my staff. It happens consistently when we use Adobe Bridge to browse to a particular folder on my external hard drive. I've copied the contents of that folder to my desktop and I get the same crash.
    Thanks,
    Peter

Yes, I've been in touch with Adobe for the past two weeks. They only take it so far, then they just ignore me. The Bridge program is not a separate piece of software. It gets loaded when you install either Adobe InDesign or Adobe Illustrator.
    Thanks.

  • GTX 560 Ti Twin Frozr II - Nvidia drivers keep crashing?

Until recently I owned a GF8800 GT 512MB which worked like a charm. Never had a single problem with it. I bought the MSI GTX 560 Ti about a month ago. Ever since then I've had the nvidia drivers crash randomly every few hours. I though it might be a driver bug so I waited for an update, but since then I've updated the drivers twice (2 new stable releases and 1 beta), tried a "clean install" also and every version had the same problem. So it's obviously not a driver issue.
When I say crash, I mean the screen goes blank, the monitor turns itself off for a few secs, and when it comes back on, I get a tray notification that the "Nvidia driver stopped working/crashed and has recovered" (something like that).
I'd also like to point out that my PC really is 100% rock solid/stable and I have zero other problems besides this GPU issue.
Is this a faulty GPU or is there a solution for this annoying problem?
    PC specs:
    CPU: i7 930
    MB: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R
    RAM: 3x2GB DDR3 1600MHz 8-8-8-24 Corsair
GPU: GTX 560 Ti Twin Frozr II 1GB DDR5
    HDD: Intel SSD 320 120GB, 2x320GB Seagate (Raid0), 1x500GB Seagate
    PSU: Corsair VX650W
    OS: Win7 x64 Ultimate
EDIT: In case it helps, this has so far only happened during normal work in windows, never during gaming. So my guess would be a problem with the 2d software/hardware perhaps?
EDIT2: Kombustor temps are: 35-40 idle, 75-77 on load (no user overclock ofc, only the factory one).

I recently bought the Gigabyte GTX 560 Ti SOC and I'm having similar problems too. So I guess Rasha here is correct when saying:
But it's not as annoying as it sounds, because, at least for me, the driver might restart only one time during a desktop session and then it's stable for the whole time along. I have been playing Skyrim these days with no problems. I do suspect too that firefox - flash might be one of the causes of the problem. I might try the older drivers Rasha speaks off later today.
There is definitely a problem with the 28x.xx and 290.36 beta drivers.  Please see link below:
    http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=215256
I am having this 'TDR' problem as well and have been helping nVidia by testing some drivers.  Not really sure how long it will take to fix this but ManuelG (nVidia customer relations) did say the new WHQL driver has been delayed as they are trying to find a fix.

  • Intermittent crashes while using Bridge CC2014, with OS X Mavericks.

Hello! Our Worker(s)  are experiencing Intermittent Crashes on Adobe Bridge CC2014, while browsing pictures. We have done /tested all the suggestions what Adobe page tell: http://helpx.adobe.com/bridge/kb/troubleshoot-errors-freezes-bridge-windows.html -We tried to remedy the situtation  by re-installing the Computer´s OS X Mavericks from scratch (clean install) and re-installing the Bridge cc2014 from Creative Cloud. Amount of memory was also upgraded on the machine, which now totals 12GB.  Unfortunately, still the same problem exist. When bridge crashes, it will freeze the whole machine and generates "beach-balling" effect. User has to restart the machine to recover because even "force Quit" etc. does not respond.

Here is how to see RAM overloaded…
Reboot to see the system in it's default state.
Open TextEdit for the sake of it
Open Activity Monitor & Terminal from /Applications/Utilities.
    Select the Memory tab
In Terminal enter the following command
    memory_pressure -l critical
    # note that is a lowercase L
RAM usage will climb, compression will begin the VM will become way more than the system has installed.
Eventually the system will start swapping  (look for RED) - Watch the 'memory pressure' & 'Swap used' as this happens.
Try switching to TextEdit - the system is still coping !
Switch back to Terminal & hit ctrl+c to stop the process.
Watch the VM & memory pressure return to normal levels.
    This OS kicks 4ss !

  • 1 week old 27" 3.4 I7 freezing and rainbow spinning pinwheel

Hello,   I bought a new 27" imac 3.4 I7 a few weeks ago and started having issues with it.  Returned that one and now I am having the same issues with the new one.  When I wake the computer from sleep I get the SPOD (spinning pinwheel of death)  you know that rainbow colored spinning wheel that says that some program isn't responding.  It spins for a few seconds after the computer wakes up and then goes away and then about every 10 or 15 minutes I get the SPOD while surfing the net and the computer freezes for a few seconds and then the SPOD goes away but now I am a bit more frustrated because the SPOD came and never went away and the computer froze and had to restart.  So bottom line should I return this computer also and get a new one since I am still within the 2 week return window?   I am wondering if this is a hardware issue or software issue.  If its hardware than the computer is bad but if its a software issue every computer I get will have the same problem.  What should I do?  Absolutely way to much money spent to have issues right out of the box!!!!!!  Very very dissapointed with this product!!!

Why haven't you called AppleCare, you have 90 days of free telephone support. The number is in your owners manual, I suggest you use it. I'd also recommend keeping Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) open and when your get the SBBOD navigate to AM check if you have any runaway Apps by checking the %CPU column.  Also while you're in AM click the System Memory tab and see how much Free RAM it has. As a general rule of thumb if your have 500MB or less of RAM then the system is starved for RAM and needs an upgrade. It should look similar to:

  • Spinning Pinwheel When Sync

Hi yall. I tried searching and didn't see any answers to the problem I am having, so thought I would give this a try.
    iPhone 4
MacBook with Mac OS X 10.5.8
    iTunes 10
    All are up to date.
ISSUE: Whenever I connect to iTunes, iTunes recognizes the phone, but whenever I try to click on the options on top (such as music, videos, photos, etc) I get the spinning pinwheel of death. Also, if I click sync now or check for updates, I get the same spinning pinwheel. iTunes is completely unresponsive. I have to restart the computer all together. This issue just started about 2 weeks ago, everything was syncing/working fine until then. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I've tried all the different fixes from apple support, but none of them fix the issue. I tried creating a new user on my MacBook and everything worked fine, so I am not sure what to do. I have attached a pic of the screen I get when I try syncing.
I also have an 80gb iPod and when I sync, iTunes becomes unresponsive as well.
I have let the computer be and after 15 mins sometimes, no response at all.
    Anyone have any ideas?

    Hi backatchu.
You will probably get better results posting in the Mac OS X
v10.5 Leopard forum. Here is the link.

It will help if you give details from hardware in about this Mac
such as CPU, RAM, HD size and HD free space.(bottom of finder window)
The SBBOD is usually from CPU usage.

You can't reinstall Safari 5.1 because the download site is set up for Snow Leopard. Any sugestions?  I've cleared my cache. I'm on a 2007 iMac intel duo core.

I've been having the SPOD as well, since the upgrade to Lion.  It only seems to be in Safari.  It will spin for around 30 seconds, then work fine.  There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to when it happens, it happens on low graphics pages as well as those with embeded animations etc...

  • Bridge CS5 crashes immediately, spinning pinwheel of doom.  HELP!

Ok guys, I recently installed CS5 Design Premium to my MBP running OS X 10.6.4.  Everything works just fine except Bridge.  Every time I open Bridge, it immediately goes into the spinning pinwheel icon and my only option is to Force Quit.  It won't let me access any menus or anything, it just hard crashes every time.  Help!!  Any ideas?

    Any other ideas?
Go to the user library and from the preferences folder find and delete the
plist file for Bridge, for Bridge CS5 this should be called: '
com.adobe.bridge4.plist' and if you have other versions for Bridge as plist
as well and don't use other CS version delete those to.
From the same library go to the folder Caches/Adobe/BridgeCS5 and delete
    both items from that folder.
Restart Bridge again with holding down option key and again choose refresh
preferences. After restart the above deleted files refresh them selves with
    new once.
Hope this helps, if not create an extra user account just for testing. If it
works in there do system maintenance with check and repair permissions using
Apple Disk Utility or other maintenance software.

    Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

Just a note, I updated to the NVidia 191.xx series driver, from the 190.xx version, on my notebook and my desktop PC.  Both crashed whenever I used the scrollbar to scroll down the effects or transitions area.  I went back to the 190 series and it's fine again.
Just a note the latest 191.xx series drivers from NVidia caused PE7 to become unstable on both my PCs, both running 64 bit Vista.
