NVIDIA: Dual monitor question (geforce FX5200)

Hi all:
I've been using my geforce FX5200 nvidia card single monitor, just a CRT plugged into the VGA port. I had two CRTs and used a VGA->DVI adapter to attempt to get the second monitor to show (the card has a DVI and a VGA). I was never able to get the second screen to work that way, I don't know if the adapter was bad or the wrong one, but nonetheless it didn't work. I finally got a "DVI monitor." What's the easiest way to get this second monitor to work?

They should both be picked up on the nvidia-settings tool?
In theory yes, but in practice there was a problem (or possibly a "feature") on some nvidia cards (or maybe a limitation in the driver) which I also experienced on FX5500 where you couldn't use certain pipes in combination. For example using VGA+TV-Out was not possible so you would have to get a vga-to-dvi adapter and use DVI+TV-Out, which was possible. Since your first try with two CRT monitors failed it might be that your can't use VGA+DVI in combination.
Edit: unfortunately it was so long ago that I don't have any resources on this. But a quick search now brought me to another example of this

  • Dual G5 with Geforce fx5200 running 2 -24 inch displays?

I have a dual G5 with the apple 23" display on a Geforce fx5200 card. It runs the 23" plus a 17" Samsung quite well in Logic Pro. I need more real estate though. Question is will the Geforce run an HP 24" to replace the Samsung 17"
    Thanks.

I run Aperture in dual screen mode with a full screen browser on one monitor and and a mirrored image of the selected image on the other monitor.
This doesn't work with dual video cards. Here's a work around
    The temporary solution:
    1. Arrange the monitors in system preferences so the primary monitor is on the left.
2.Set the viewer mode to "Browser and Viewer"
    3. Set the monitors in Aperture to show multiple on the main viewer and "desk top" on the secondary monitor.
    4. Toggle the browser to the right hand side of the expanded image, with the inspector on the right hand side of that.
    5. Stretch the view screen to cover both screens.
    6. Resize the bowser and the inspector to cover the right hand screen.
This now simulates "Browser Only" with mirrored second screen. As long as the "expanded image" is on the primary screen Aperture adjustment inspector works and the images are stable with full histograms.
Apple engineering implies that a dual mini display port card is in the works.

  • Mac and Windows with dual monitors Question

I use a Intel MacPro running Tiger with latest updates in my church. We use the Mac and Keynote 2.0.2 to present PowerPoint slides on the big screen (dual outputs). Everything was going well until the pastors upgraded to new computers running Vista and Office 2007. Now neither pastor's files will load into Keynote. It comes up with an error. The pastors have saved their files from PP as 2003 PPT files, and they still will not open. Error - unable to open file type. The one pastor went back to XP (dumped Vista) but still used the Office 2007 program and saved as PP2003, but the error still appears.
FYI - I noticed that Office 2007 saves with a file with the extension of .pptx instead of the .ppt. Checking the file they gave me shows that it is indead a .ppt file and not .pptx file. It makes no difference.
I believe it is an Office 2007 problem I'm dealing with. I have taken the .ppt file and loaded it onto the PC running PP 2003 and it loads fine, except for some format problems. I then resave it with a different name and tried to load that file (hoping it was converted) , with the same error showing. The problem is transfered with the file. Other files created with the PP 2003 program load fine into Keynote, so it has to be the Office2007 doing something.
So the questions are, is there an easy fix and still use the Keynote program, OR does Keynote 3 take care of this problem in the upgrade, OR should I install Win XP home or Pro and use parallels (which I have)? Would WinXP Home be enough to support the dual outputs and be fast enough? I am familiar with XP Pro not Home.
Any information you may have, could be a help. I need this resolved soon. I hate having to bring in the old Windows PC, after enjoying the quality of the Mac.

You should not have issues attaching two displays to the Mac mini. You will not be able to use an iPad as one of those displays.
I have no issues streaming video on demand from all of the media sources which you have listed. My Mac mini is the Early '09, so my hardware is not as powerful as the newest Mac mini.

Thanks David - glad to here the Mini supports dual monitors, and you're not having any streaming issues. Did you have any special settings, like "no hardware acceleration"? Are you streaming HD content?
If it supports dual monitors, then I would think the iPad could be used as a second display and input device - the demos I've seen with Air Display (from Avatron Software") would accomplish what I'm looking for. Here is a demo at http://www.vimeo.com/16950420 showing the iPad working with a Windows machine, but I've seen them working with Macs as well.
    Thanks again

  • PSE8 & Dual Monitor Question

I just connected an external display to my MacBook Pro & have a couple of very remedial questions.
I have the displays set up in the "extended desktop" mode. But when I open an image in ACR, I cannot drag the ACR window to my external display. Can you please help me here?
Also, for those of you using dual displays, I assume a desirable way to set up the 2 screens is to keep the PSE tools on one screen & the image to be edited in the other. I'm curious about how you set up your workspace.
    Thank you very much.

Well, you're using dual monitors the way I've always heard it was to be done.
First unless the monitors are identical, it does seem like quite a logistics issue to have both screens color balanced and calibrated. So, obviously keep the image on the one that "prints best".
For the sake of disucssion, if both displays were very close to identical, I suppose you could use the "clone display" mode as a constant before and after.
My own slightly eccentric self would like to have one monitor vertical, and the other horizontal. This would present both horizontal and vertical images full frame simultaneously. As it stands now, I can get this, but I need two computers to do it.
I seem to be in a minority, as none of the current graphics drivers permit this, without one of the images being sideways that is. Is this too eccentric?

  • Docked X60 - Dual Monitor question

    Hi All !
I have an X60 docked on an X6 Ultrabase...I'd like to run a couple of HP 1740 TFT monitors off the laptop (without the integrated screen operational) in the usual FN + F7 fashion.
I thought I might be able to use one of these to split the output and run up both monitors in parallel ? Will this work and detect the dual monitor real estate or do i have no choice but to go with one of these
Hope you have some advice ?
    Cheers
    Scott

  • Dual monitoring question...

    Hi,
I would appreciate any help i can get in regards to setting up a dual monitoring system on my power mac g4. I have the mirror door version which i believe has a ATI Radeon 9000 Pro graphics card (i may be wrong as i don't know much about this side of my computer) and it has two connections, DVI and VGA... I am currently using the DVI connection to run an original 17" apple cinema display off of DVI.
I am wanting to connect another one of these monitors and am wondering the cheapest way of doing this. Can i get a VGA to DVI convertor similar to DVI to VGA? or is there a PCI option?
    Thanks.

First, check exactly what graphics card you have by running the system profiler. If you're not familiar with this, click on the Apple menu item at top left and select "About this Mac" Then click on "More info" to run the system profiler. Once that is up select "Graphics/Displays" to check which card you have. Anyone advising needs to know exactly which card you've got, guesswork might lead to suggestions that don't work.
You can simply plug another display into some cards that have multiple outputs, but some will only drive one display at a time. If you have in fact got a Radeon 9000 then you're in luck. You have an ADC connector and a DVI, and you can run a second display from the ADC connector by using an ADC to DVI-converter and a monitor with a DVI input. You could also use any old Apple monitors that take ADC connections with a suitable cable, but modern displays would be a lot better.
There used to be plenty of Mac PCI cards around and any of those would work in your G4, but the problem nowadays would be finding one. I got one on eBay for my G4 and it works a treat driving a second display, but that card is no longer easy to find and wasn't the best choice anyway. Your Radeon 9000 (if that's what you have) is a much better card.

  • Dual monitor failure! (FX5200)

Well, 2 days ago I connected a second CRT monitor to my MSI NVidia FX5200 VTD128 card via the addapter given with the card.
It was working ok, though the refresh rates were noticeably slower on both monitors when both monitors were active.
Then I started getting little flickers, even though there was nothing going on, which was a little strange...but I figured it was ok.
So I was working with powerpoint, Macromedia Flash MX, Windows Media Player, etc. and I started having some problems, especially with Powerpoint. I'll use powerpoint to explain what happened: While previewing my presentation the 2nd (older) monitor was where the presentation was being displayed. It usually didn't take long for the screen to flicker a bit, and change the vertical and horizontal size of the display, to something that was just not right. I could reset it back to the orizinal resolution or v/h sync by going into settings and changing the resolution.
Well, then it happened again, but this time the entire image was lost! Now I can not get an image to that monitor while in windows...works during startup though. Please help.

Sorry,  I really had to leave earlier.
I got the two monitors to work together again, but this time there were some limitations, and it eventually led to the same end as before.
As far as I can tell it is a windows problem or a video card problem, not a power supply or motherboard issue. I should have said that earlier. I believe it to be a video card problem, which is leading to a windows problem.
So as I said I have the FX5200 VTD128 card, running on a 4x AGP slot with NVidia drivers (not MSI drivers as these do not work on my system). My case temperature is fairly constant at approx. 81 F, and I don't know the temp of the video card.
The first time I had a problem I was using the DualView option, where both monitors are separate pretty much. After a few hours of working nicely the monitor started having so problems...it would blink an come back with a picture that was very narrow and extremely tall (both more than what could be fixed with the monitor controls). Also the colour was dull and dark. Eventually after fixing this problem a few times by changing the resolution to reset the monitor, the computer crashed. When I restarted windows the second monitor remained black while in windows (though I still see all the start up stuff on it).
So today since I couldn't get the Dual View option to work I used the option that spreads the image over both monitors. Exact same thing happened a few hours after use.
Since I had restarted my computer over this period of time, I am pretty sure it is not a memory thing. I'm guessing it is a heat thing. I have a feeling the fan on the video card is not working like it is supposed to without the MSI drivers. If this is the case, MSI should be responsible for informing buyers about this problem.
Since I was using different programs both times, I'm pretty sure it is not related to what programs were running. And since the monitor was working no problem earlier, I don't think it has anything to do with the hardware in my computer, though I tried to provide some info earlier...though I do believe there was enough info there for a somewhat educated guess as to what my problem could have been.
I have a feeling this will have to go to MSI support to get any type of answer, but hopefully someone else has a good idea as to what it is and what can be done about it.
    Thanks
    PS.
Richard, I believe the 4 wheels would be the equivelent of me saying I had a video card....the h/v sync thing would be like saying the car is making a specific noise. Welcome to the life of a mechanic. I appreciate help, but please refrain from the sarcasm.

  • T420 dual monitors question?

I have a T420 (Intel Graphics Intergrated) and two Dell U2413 monitors. Can someone tell me if it's possible to connect two displays to the laptop through display port. I only want to run the monitors in dual mode, I'm not worried about using the laptop LCD. Also is there a guide on what cables I need two use? I've tried rigging everything up (I'm not using a dock) but I can't seem to get things working properly?

Not like the later 27" models, because the 2008 iMac's Mini-DVI output port does not support input.

Unfortunately you will have to use ScreenRecyler or something like that.

  • T400 dual monitor question

I have a ThinkPad T400 with two "Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family" display adapters listed in the Device Manager. I was wondering if it was possible to connect two external 1600 x 900 monitors to this laptop via an Advanced Mini Dock (obviously turning off the laptop screen) or whether I needed a different chipset to support this? Thanks!

yes you can but i am not sure whether this resolution is supported.

  • Another Dual Monitor Question

    Hi,
I just got a 30" monitor and had already been using a 23" monitor. I'm just wondering if there is any way that I can have the dock and the menu bar along the top display on both monitors? I'm guessing not, but it would be great if it is possible. Thanks in advance.
    Stacey

I always do something like what you propose. Even if it is only from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8.
And format a new drive fully (zero) with new OS (SL) and clone my stuff over (SuperDuper) and run latest SL-compatible Disk Warrior (4.2, or use DG2, TTPro 5.x if they are ready).
Sometimes you have to wait on things. Actually surprised that 3rd party drivers from FirmTek are ready, Sonnet will have more in Oct, SoftRAID, etc.
If you aren't using SuperDuper already, check out Shirt-Pocket Software. You can use Apple Disk Utility Restore; Carbon Copy Cloner - and others - but I switched to SD years ago (still have some programs to synch folders).

  • Dual monitor question.....

I have a G4 Mac with 2 monitor connections on the back (1.25mhz). I have one monitor, Samsung, 24" plugged into the DVI plug. I have my 'old' but still good 15" Samsung that I was thinking of hooking up. If I get an ADC adapter for the 15", will it work even though it's not an Apple Display? Secondly, how much will my computer slow down with 2 monitors hooked up? Significantly? Very little? Somewhere in the middle? It has 2G RAM. Will any ADC adapter work or is there one brand that is better than another? I just started looking at them and they are much more expensive than I thought! Thanks for any tips, Judy

To connect a DVI display to the ADC port on the computer you need the ADC to DVI adapter, which is just a connector adapter, such as:

Do not confuse this with the expensive DVI to ADC adapters which includes a power supply, such as:
<http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=18 72D402&nplm=M8661LL/B> You do NOT want one of these.

  • Setup 2 monitors question geforce GTX 650 ti

I got a Galaxy GTX 650 ti boost 1gb and i try to setup 2 monitors I use the dvi-I with my sumsung P2770HB and my other prob is What monitor use a DVI-D how would i setup the other monitor and what monitor would work?

Any one of these cables would work. You just need to make sure you get the appropriate length. I am surprised Best Buy does not actually have any of the cables themselves and only marketplace vendors.

  • Dual Monitor Setup S5-1070t

I am trying to connect a second monitor to my HP S5-1070t desktop  It has an AMD Radeon HD 6450 graphics card installed which was ordered with the computer.  This card has a DVI and an HDMI port on it.  My main monitor is an HP 2011x connected to the DVI port on the card.  I am attempting to connect a Compaq Q1859 monitor to the HDMI port using an HDMI to VGA adapter.  I updated the AMD Calalyst Control Center to Version 2013.0328.2218.38225.  When I run Detect Displays it only shows my HP2011x display.
I scanned through the previous dual monitor questions but I didn't find anything related to my problem.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Here are the original specs and configurable options for your HP Pavilion Slimline s5-1070t CTO Desktop Computer. Here are the specs for your HP Pavilion 2011x WLED backlit monitor and your Compaq Q1859 Widescreen LCD monitor. According to the specs, the 2011x monitor supports both DVI-D and VGA video input connectors, while the Q1859 only supports a VGA video input connector.
You stated the s5-1070t with HD 6450 graphics card supports both HDMI and DVI video outputs but you didn't indicate which type of DVI it is. DVI comes in DVI-I (both analog and digital), DVI-A (analog only), and DVI-D (digital only). Please review this Wikipedia DVI article to determine which type is on your card or post a photo of the ports on the card.
You also indicate you are using a HDMI-to-VGA adapter. There is no way way to "adapt" a digital HDMI signal into an analog VGA signal short of using an expensive digital-to-analog converter. These converters normallly run in the hundreds of dollars and don't always produce good results. Until the monitors are correctly connected without this "so-called" adapter, the computer is only going acknowledge one monitor.
    If, and only if, the Radeon HD 6450 supports HDMI and DVI-I, you can connect both monitors as follows and both monitors will work;
    Computer ---> HDMI-to-DVI-D (digital) cable ---> HP 2011x Monitor
    Computer ---> DVI-to-VGA dongle ----> VGA cable ---> Compaq Q1859 Monitor

  • Fx5200 TD128 Dual Monitor Gaming

Hi, i have a GeForce FX5200 TD128 and i have 2 monitors, 1 on the DVI and one on the SVGA slot,
I would like to know how can i set my monitors to be able to play fullscreen games on both monitors

    XblackdemonX,
The GeForceFX 5200 does not have enough horsepower to play a game on one monitor and you want to play on two monitors????
The game has to support dual monitors if you want to do multiple monitor gaming.
    Take Care,
    Richard
P.S. There are some flight sims that support dual monitors.
