Nvidia Firewall - Neo2

Hi,
Sorry to ask such a newbie question but, How do I use the built in Nvidia firewall on the Neo2? the drivers that came with the board don't seem to have any mention of the Firewall, nor does the printed manual. Am I missing something? Is the firewall any good?
The Nvidia system utility barely works with the neo2 either (although gives more accurate temp readings).. will this work in the future? Corecenter is pretty much hopless on my Neo2.
As we pay for all these extras it would be nice to use them
Also - has any of you with the Neo2 updated your drivers to 5.10? if so how have your experiences been?
thanks

reinstall forceware drivers - when asked - select yes to enable Firewall - should leave an icon behind on your desktop.
PS - heard it doesnt work too well - soory - its works tooo well - i.e. u'll have trouble playin games with punkbuster.
oh and only works for Nvidia nic

  • K8N Neo2 nVidia firewall question - Please help!

    Dear all,
Installed XP, then SP1, then the drivers from MSI CD. But I didn't see any pop up telling me it will install nVidia Firewall, is that correct?
OK, anyway, now I have both nVidia and Realtek Gbit LAN port available. But if I connect my ADSL router to nVidia port, I won't be able to see any website!!! If I connect to Realtek port, everything is fine. What happened?
Is it due to nVidia firewall? How do I configure nVidia firewall?
    Many thanks!

Not sure about your connection but you probably have not got the firewall installed. Browse the MSI cd that came with your system. Go to \nVidia\System\CK8S\Win2K-XP\Ethernet\NRM and run setup to install the firewall. Then activate it by clicking on the Nvidia web-based interface icon on the desktop and select a setting and apply.

  • NVidia firewall stopped working after nForce drivers upgrade

Just for the record, my nVidia firewall stopped working after I "upgraded" from nForce 4.08 (came with the mobo cd) to 4.24 (latest drivers at the nVidia website).
    ...damn nVidia.
    Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks for the reply.  I tried -- to an extent -- what you suggested.  Thinking nVidia was smart   I went on to installing the 4.24 without removing previous drivers/components.  Everything installed except for the network/firewall stuff.  I clicked "yes, install nVidia network stuff" and a fatal error occured a few seconds into the installation.  I then proceeded to uninstalling the network access manager, followed by a retry of the 4.24 installation: same problem.
However, I never uninstalled the nForce drivers themselves.  I will redownload the 4.24 .exe, uninstall everything, and run the .exe.  I'll then proceed to report my crappy results here, in this forum.

  • Is your/my Nvidia Firewall working

I have the Nvidia Firewall installed. I have tried it on 2 default settings, Medium(recommended) and High. However when I go into "Firewall-Information" the Graphical, Bar Graph and Table always show under Packets + Connections "Total Allowed and Total Blocked" as 0(0%). Surely at the high setting(and even medium) there would be some statistics. Even under the "table" graph -Firewall Basic Statistics- shows a 0 value for all entries. Does this mean the firewall is not working correctly and if so what steps can I take to check and see if I have it installed properely and get it working.
O.K. guys I answered this one myself. For anyone interested the Nvidia Firewall appears to be very, very good.(bye bye Zone Alarm). I logged onto grc.com and ran their shields-up app. These were the results:
    File Sharing:
Your Internet port 139 does not appear to exist!
One or more ports on this system are operating in FULL STEALTH MODE!
Standard Internet behavior requires port connection attempts to be answered with a success or refusal response. Therefore, only an attempt to connect to a nonexistent computer results in no response of either kind. But YOUR computer has DELIBERATELY CHOSEN NOT TO RESPOND (that's very cool!) which represents advanced computer and port stealthing capabilities. A machine configured in this fashion is well hardened to Internet NetBIOS attack and intrusion.
Unable to connect with NetBIOS to your computer.
All attempts to get any information from your computer have FAILED. (This is very uncommon for a Windows networking-based PC.) Relative to vulnerabilities from Windows networking, this computer appears to be VERY SECURE since it is NOT exposing ANY of its internal NetBIOS networking protocol over the Internet.
Common Ports + All Service Ports:
Your system has achieved a perfect "TruStealth" rating. Not a single packet — solicited or otherwise — was received from your system as a result of our security probing tests. Your system ignored and refused to reply to repeated Pings (ICMP Echo Requests). From the standpoint of the passing probes of any hacker, this machine does not exist on the Internet. Some questionable personal security systems expose their users by attempting to "counter-probe the prober", thus revealing themselves. But your system wisely remained silent in every way. Very nice.
Well done Nvidia(+MSI). This is very encouraging.

You just copied and pasted those results from my post Joking. But seriously I have run shields-up previously and the test did report ports open or at least visible as far as I can remember. It was on a previous system and it prompted me to install Zone Alarm at the time. (However I suspect the winxp firewall and other patches released might also have had some effect). In fact it was my experience with Zone Alarm that had me concerned about the firewall logs from the nvidia firewall. At the click of a button ZL gave up a ton of information about probes malicious and otherwise. It was a good thing it was easy to adjust the settings as sometimes the amount of info was overkill. However I am also experiencing(like others here) a few web sites that I cannot connect to with the nvidia firewall active. Strange thing is if I connect to hotmail first I can access them then through msn, which leads me to believe the firewall is indeed active and working although I suspect I will need to do some tinkering with the default settings and set up a custom setting to suite me. I supose the jury is still out but it does appear that the hardware firewall at least has a lot of potential.

  • Nvidia firewall and home networking and printer-sharing: how do you enable it?

Hey guys, finally my system is running at 100% after re-formating WinXP3 times which is probly one of the most painful experience i ever had.
I installed the nvidia firewall and it runs great but the problem is that when i enable it, all the other computers cannot see this MSI computer's shared folder and network printers because I think the firewall blocked it all.
I tried to change the secuirity setting to low and even added the IP address of all the other 3 computers to the firewall config w/o avail.
can anyone of you here enlighten me?

  • Is it necessary to install nVidia Firewall ?

    Hi !
I just installed all drivers came in the CD of Neo Platinum Mainboard , then I remember a screen asked me if I want to install the Firewall , I clicked NO , because I planned to use the Firewall which is already in the WindowsXP Pro ... Is there any different between the Firewall from the nVidia CD and the one in XP ?
    Thanks for any answer !

The Nvidia Firewall is much better than the one thet comes with XP, it just has a somewhat steep learning curve for the uninitiated.  It is not entirely necissary to load it, but if you wish for the added security, and dont mind a little configuring, then I would load it.  I ran the firewall for a while, but took it off beacuse certain websites refused to load for me, and I really didn't want to mess with it.

  • Nvidia Firewall and Secure Sites

    Dear All,
I am hoping someone can help me.... I have Googled for answers and searched this board but not found answers!
One reason I bought my Neo Platinum was for the hardware firewall, which on the whole seems to be great... apart from the fact I cannot connect to my online bank when any setting other than OFF is enabled. Basically my browser hangs and times out.
I have read that a number of other people have this problem and also a number of people DON'T have this problem! Sites which I cannot access include:
    www.postbank.nl
    www.americanexpress.com
    www.nettavisen.no
I have tried copying the OFF profile with the view to enabling things systematically to discover which setting prevents the site from loading, but even a copy of OFF doesn't load anything...
After my last Google, I downloaded the Beta 6.11 with the updated Firewall, which adds application control, and set rules for my Java plug-in as others thought that it was due to this, but despite having the same settings as others I still can't access the sites listed above.
I also used the wizards to allow secure HTTP traffic, but that hasn't solved my problem!
Please, if you can access these sites with Nvidia's Firewall switched on, would you post details of your Nvidia Firewall settings so that I can check mine?!
Failing that, if you could post any links that may help me I would be very grateful... I cannot find very much information regarding the Firewall on t'internet.... Other than the Administrators Guide .pdf document....
    Many Thanks,
    fM

    Thanks Shanks!
Have looked at that, and read through the admin user guide, but most of it means nothing to me!
I want someone to tell me... I'm too lazy, I know
To anyone else having this problem.... I think the answer is to open Port 443 (an absolute requirement in order to use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) I will check later and post back....)

  • Nvidia Firewall ?

How do I activate the Nvidia firewall on the k8n Neo Platinum ?   I don't have a clue I've never used a firewall before and just upgraded to winXP.   So I really don't know anything about them.

Listen, the CD that accompanies this motherboard contains the nforce drivers. It is explained very well in the manual. You first hit the "Driver Tab" on the utility screen, as soon as you download the driver- then the installation for the Nvidia Firewall and Forceware Network Manager will begin.
Knowing that I can download updated drivers later, I always use the actual installation cd's for this very reason...you might miss something other than a driver.
Also as far as setting the firewall up to work- I hardly call that a job. Its the simplest thing I have ever seen or used. For Real.
Simply click the Nvidia program from the start menu, it will open- then get this- you click one simple button and alakazam- your firewall is up and running. Could not be any simplier than that. It has never given me trouble. And it works because I use Norton and through Systemworks you can log on to the Symantec site and it will test your ports and such for safety. When I test it using the Nvidia Firewall I pass everything and it says im in stealth mode.
I love both the board and the utilities, I couldnt have asked for more.

  • How do u creat BIOS recovery disk + nvidia firewall question.

    WooooHOoOOO....
after re-formating a dozen times, busted SCSI config, messed up driver install, I FINALLY GOT this board working at 100%!!!
This mobo powered through my entire DOOM 3 Odyssey to Hell NON-STOP without a SINGLE CRASH!! Definitely a good testament to this board's quality.
Now for the final few noob question, how do I create a bios recovery disk just in case things happened.
lastly... how do you properly setup the NV Firewall? After enabling it, none of the other computers in my network can see this computer with the MSI Board, so file and printer sharing all stops when the firewall is enabled.
Anyone here has a walkthrough on the firewall?
ONCE AGAIN...thanks to all who helped me!!!

i havent got my nvidia firewall to work imma wait until they release better drivers for it but for creating the bios recovery disk i think if u use msi's live update it will ask u if u want to create one or not.

If any software part of the firewall needs to be updated, it will be included in the nForce drivers.

  • Nvidia firewall help

bought my k8n neo pla on ebay oem
where do i find the fire wall program if i dont have the setup cd?
    HELP??????

You don't need the motherboard cd .
Only things you need is the unified driver pack 5.10 from nvidia .
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_udp_winxp_5.10
The firewall setup program is inkluded here together with the motherboard
    chipset drivers.
Untick nvidia sound when installing 5.10
And use the sound drivers from realtek for the onboard reltek alc850 sound chip.
    A3.65
Windows 98Gold/98se/Me/2000/XP for Driver only. For Windows 98 SE, DirectX(R)8 is required to enable advanced features.
    http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlac97-2.aspx?lineid=5&famid=12&series=8&Software=True
Both theese are self extracting archive files . So it is a good idea to
extract them with winrar before use.You can then i.e in extracted 5.10 pack use
firewall setup directly , and access individual drivers for manual install via
    devicemanager.
For motherboard utilities and bios etc.
    goto MSI.

  • Nvidia firewall (network access manager)

Does anyone know what the status of the nvidia built-in firewall software/driver problems?  I haven't heard anything about it for a while.  Are there any beta drivers or software out there from nvidia/MSI that work better than the released versions already available?  TIA!
    RB

It certainly is possible I did something wrong in my setup, but if I have so have a lot of other people.  I did notice that you are running the 1.4 BIOS.  It is possible that it works better with that BIOS version.  Also, it may have to do with how you install the drivers.  I know that in the past, the order you install them in and whether you delete the old ones first made a bid difference in if they worked correctly.  I am not sure what the correct way to update the forceware drivers is nowadays.  If anyone has a good guide on exactly how to update your forceware drivers, I for one would appreciate it.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum and nVidia Firewall (NAM)

    Hi to all.
I have bought a computer to dive in the 64...
This is the first time that i need to install mobo drivers and utilities, i find them very useful.
Ok, i was reading about the hardware firewall, and the software that it needs to run. I found the folder in the MSI CD to install it, but give me an error, something about "user". I don´t know if is the cd or is windows error... I have WinXP pro SP2.
    I have two questions:
-Where can i find the latest NAM version to download in the nvidia website?  I only found the nforce4 standalone kit and unified driver (another thing, i don´t know what to install in my mobo...).
-Did you got the same problem?
    Thanks in advance.

    Ahi le has dado compañero!!
I will try that fix that GustavoR tolds me.
    Thanks.
the security is very important, i only have one pc and a router, with all of his ports opened (i preferred a firewall than a hard solution). I want to try this nvidia hard-soft option  to see how it works and if itś better that may lovely kerio
GustavoR, ¿que tal funciona el invento este? Funciona como un firewall soft que te va avisando cuando una aplicacion tiene que entrar o salir, o hay que abrir puertos en plan router...
(Transcription     How does it works? Works like a windows firewall soft, with his warnings and automatic rules? or like a router, opening the ports manually...)

  • Nvidia Firewall and Torrents

I have already opened the ports necessary for downloading torrents (6880-6999), but I still get very slow download speeds.  It ranges anywhere from 2-10 Kbps and most times just quits and stays at zero.  I am using bit tornado 0.3.7.
I can download from the web and IRC with no problems and usually get anwhere from 200 - 500 Kbps.  Before I bought this board with an integrated network card, torrents worked great.  Is anyone else having this problem or maybe know how to fix it?
