Nvidia FX 5800 Ultra??

Hi to all the forum members!
I have just a few questions to raise about the newest card available. Firstly i wanted to ask about the noise pollution the FX produces. I've managed to build a quiet system and i intend to keep it that way, but the FX is the noisiest card yet. Is there any make of FX that is quiet or could i reduce the noise somehow??
Secondly i want to know how the FX really compares with the 9800 Pro. I've read very mixed reviews that go one way or the other really. What can you tell me about this??
Thanks for your time!!

To get rid of the "noise pollution" you could not play any 3D games...
Leadtek has managed to improve the "FlowFX" quite a bit by replacing it with a box.  It's still quite loud, but not obscene like the reference design.  It takes up 2 slots.
hxxp://www.hothardware.com/hh_files/S&V/leadtek_fx5800.shtml
The 9800 Pro is quite a bit faster in most situations.  But nVidia keeps changing their drivers, and the GFFX keeps getting faster.  It's no longer pitifully slow (around 9500 Pro speed), but it'll unlikely get any faster than a 9700, not to mention 9800.
nVidia is rushing to replace the FX 5800 next month, which should tell you what nVidia thinks about their own flagship product.
My advice: Get a 9800 Pro or a 9700 Pro, or wait for NV35 (announcement in May, production who knows when)

Well I guess the word is out now:

We looked at MSI's Geforce FX 5800 Ultra, but from the information we have received from a number of trusted sources you might as well be looking at the Asus or PNY board. Why? Because all these manufacturers have stuck like glue to the reference design, and with NVIDIA making the PCBs for the 5800 Ultra units you probably won't see much difference in performance between the cards.

  • Colour Issues - NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra in G5 2.5Ghz

    Hi
I have an odd issue with NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra card in a G5 Tower.
The monitor (tried several screen so ruled that out) displays as if it is only producing Thousands instead of Millions of colours, but this is only seen at the Black end of the scale and white. For example, if you are viewing a folder's content as list, you can't see the pale blue lines under every other file. If you open another window on top, you can see the blue lines in what would be the shadow of the top window. So pale colours and dark colours are showing as white or black.
Interestingly I have a fix for this issue but it's not permanent as it reverts on restart. If I go to System Prefs > Displays and rotate the display 180˚ and then revert to 0˚ the problem is fixed!
I've tried everything I know to find a permanent fix :-
    Dumping Preferences
    Calibrating
    Resolutions and Refresh rate
I did have this issue on an ATI card, but I resolved that with an ATI System Preference Pane.
    Can anybody suggest trying anything?
    thanks
    Matt

Genius, this strikes a chord. I remember resolving this issue for a customer a couple of years ago and this was the answer. Was v.pleased with myself at the time, but obviously my memory is failing me now.
Can't test until monday, but will be in touch.
PS what does this say/mean - Aha, good clue, the bloe bard!
    thanks

  • NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL supported for FC Studio II on DP PPC G5 2.5??

Up dated to 10.4.11 & Studio II (FC6.0.2) and no problem. Even launched Final cut once and all o.k.
2nd time, says grafix card, NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL isn't Quartz Extreme so, good by we're
    quitting.
Swapped into another identical G5 and in Sys Profiler, says the card is Quartz Extreme supported.
What gives? I tried the Nvidia web site for drivers, but they show no Mac support.
    Ideas?
    thanks
    p2

Any progress on this? I just ran into the same problem. I launch Final Cut Pro 6.0.3 and I get an error:
1)Final Cut Pro requires that your system have a Quartz Extreme capable video card.
2)Final Cut Pro recommends that your system have 64 MB of VRAM; this system has only 0 MB of VRAM.
3)The installed graphics card does not not support the OpenGL features recommended by Final Cut Pro.
System profilor shows the GeForce 6600, but no Quarts infomration.

  • Will this card work? - Nvidia Geforce 6800 ULTRA 256MB VRAM AGP Video Card

I posted a question about getting the maximum resolution from an Apple 30 inch Cinema Display and another card, which didn't work.
The replies were fast here in the forum and quite correct.
My next question is regarding the Nvidia Geforce 6800 ULTRA 256MB VRAM AGP Video Card.
I have an AGP card with an ATi Radeon 9600 Pro card that can't power the 30 inch because it's only 64MB and no DVI output.
I'm wondering whether this card will give me the maximum resolution?
    Thanks again.

    Hi Japamac-
    Thanks for the quick reply.
My System Profiler indicates a ATI Radeon 9600 Pro, but it doesn't have the Dual Link since this is an older G5 with only 64MB of VRAM.
The GeForce 6800 is a refurb, but is Mac compatible.
I'm hoping that it will work, but since it won't be returnable, I don't want to spend the money needlessly.
I did order another card that the Apple support suggested should be compatible, but turned out that they sent me the PC version.
I've spoken to Apple as well and get conflicting info.
It boils down to the fact that this is a G5 with a late 2004 date.
It is fast enough for me and my only hang up is that I'm only getting 12980X800 resolution.
I'm not using it for gaming or graphics processing.
    HTH.

  • NVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra just died - need equivalent for my G5 - HELP

    Hi,
I reviewed the posts but didn't find a simple answer to my mundane (if critical to me!) question:
I have a G5 as outlined below. I upgraded it the very day the 30"monitors were announced and received the:
nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL Card kit
My card died this morning and I need to replace it with a functional equivalent, I know the 6800 is rare which is fine- I just need whatever is available today to get fixed up.
Does anyone know what card I can easily get to do the job?
    Thanks so much.
    My G5
    Model Name: Power Mac G5
    Model Identifier: PowerMac7,3
    Processor Name: PowerPC G5 (3.0)
    Processor Speed: 2.5 GHz
    Number Of CPUs: 2
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB

Alot depends on whether you ever have a second monitor hooked up.
There is a better, faster card than a 6800 for G5s called a 7800GS, but it only has 1 @ DVI port, and one VGA port. The DVI port can run a 30" just fine however. (Means it supports "Dual Link") These are all flashed PC cards....but the ROM is quite stable and they are GREAT cards.
If you need to run 2 @ 30" DVI monitors than you will need to find a Mac 6800 on EBay. It HAS to be an original Mac one, the "flashed" PC ones NEVER have Dual Link capability.
Another option would be a Max X800 XT...it has a DVI port good for a 30" and an ADC port which is only useful for an older Mac ADC monitor...but it can be converted to DVI with a relatively cheap adapter. These cards are super rare but occasionaly show up on Ebay. There are flashed X800s but most are VGA only...the DUal Link DVI ones are ULTRA rare.
No Radeon 9800 ever had Dual Link, so don't waste any time looking at those.
There is a retail option though I am not certain they are available anymore...the Radeon 9600 Mac and PC edition....has to be that one as most Mac 9600s didn't run Dual Link. These cards worked in Mac or PC and had 256 Megs of RAM. Sadly, they are MUCH slower than a 6800.
I can't stress enough that you need to find a card with Dual Link capability to run a 30". Otherwise you will end up looking at your 30" at 1280x800 instead of 2560x1600.
Try BruinMacs on Ebay, college kid who helped write the 7800GS ROM, now selling them for less than everyone else. He sometimes even has the X800 with Dual Link too, ask him.
Sadly, you will find that the official Mac 6800 and X800 cards still fetch $400 or so...the old "Supply & Demand" rule being hard to avoid. If you can find one on a local Craigslist ad, grab it up !!! (after testing)

  • Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra / G5 Dual Processor / 30 in. Display

Just installed Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra in G5 Dual Processor and my 30 in. monitor is not working. Tried theis with my other monitor, a ViewSonic 8P810 and it didn't work either and said monitor had no signal. How do I know if card is working? I did hear the Mac ding letting me know the computer was powering up but not sure it finished. Will the 6800 with other cards above it? How often are these cards dead? Thanks, CD

  • NVIDIA GeForce 2 Ultra drivers for Solaris 8

I am having trouble making the GeForce 2 Ultra drivers from NVIDIA. I have the latest gcc and make from GNU, but I keep getting errors. Has anyone been able to successfully load them and get them to work with the GeForece? Thanks in advance.

    unixforall,
I had the same problem under linux. I can only tell you what I did for Linux as I haven't had a chance to download Solaris yet. Get the following file:
    ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.0.2/Install
If you follow this step by step (it is very self explanatory) then you should end up with a few binaries that are compatible with the GeForce. In particular the XFree86 X server module. I don't know if there are any other catches with Solaris but with Linux (RH7) this worked like a charm (except I overwrote my previous config files and had to reinvent the wheel - be careful backup all config files if you are going to overwrite them). Anyway I hope this is of some use.

02/28/03 - nVidia lost MSI to ATI
nVidia estimates trimmed on large design loss. Friedman, Billings, Ramsey has learned that nVidia has lost a large design win at MSI (one of its largest customers) to ATI; firm now believes that other designs at MSI are at risk, given that they had been an nVidia-exclusive customer; additionally, firm believes nVidia's new GeForce FX line will ramp more slowly than expected due to low yields on both discrete and board-level products.

  • MAC G5 nVIDIA GeForce 6800 ULTRA power

just purchased a mac edition geforce 6800 ultra for my g5 dual agp.
will I need to power it by splitting the power from the dvd drive?
    thanks

    Jeff Coutras wrote:
yes its a mac edition (with the little monitor graphic between the DVI ports).
So its powered by the agp port whereas a flashed card is not? just one more reason to stick with genuine mac i guess. thanx guys.
That's why I held out for the Mac edition card.  Turns out that the ROM version on the one I got (2130, or 2.1.3) is later than some of the flashed cards.  I paid a little more than what some flashed cards were going for and haven't regretted it for a second.
With two DVI-D Samsung monitors now, the viewing is just dandy now.

  • [SOLVED] nvidia and xorg-server, slow start compared to nv

I've seen many similar topics but none that have been solved, therefore the new topic.
Starting xorg with nv driver takes just a few seconds to desktop, while using nvidia takes almost 10 seconds more to get to desktop. Although after reaching desktop everything works fine. I've used a minimal xorg.conf for each driver (replacing nvidia with nv):

    Driver "nvidia"

From what I can tell it is something with the nvidia driver that doesn't play well with xorg.  Perhaps some kind of autodetection that takes long time to finish. Anyone got any ideas how to solve this?

Didn't see they where timestamps . Yes it seems that glx is one cause of the delay. I've tried some different xorg.conf, and it's always ligglx.so or  NV-GLX that slows it down. Any suggestions on how I can speed this up?
ps. The computer is ok. Although the garddrive is a SATA 3.0Gb/s, 5400 RPM.  But I don't think this is the problem?

  • 3d Acceleration on two monitors with nvidia?

Is there any way to get two monitors that are running on the same pc and kernel BOTH be 3d accelerated in X?
Like two instances of X or two instances of the WM...or...something?  I have an nvidia card for both of my monitors and would like both accelerated...
Is this possible?  Can I use the "nvidia" (as opposed to "nv") driver for both?
I'm unclear on this issue, any help would be appreciated.

I finally had a chance to do some more exploration.
Currently, I've got two fluxboxes running across my monitors (no xinerama right now).  The only thing I don't like is that I still can't get the "nvidia" driver to work for both displays.
Strangely enough, when I try to use the "nvidia" module for both, upon "startx" both monitors go black and ctl + alt + backspace won't kill X, I have to hit the reset button.
Here is the log generated after both monitors going blank.  Any help would be very appreciated:
<----------I editted a few lines out here and there in the log, due to the forums truncating the message.  I editted in particular the long series of line starting with NV or NVIDIA and then a bunch of resolutionm combos.  let me know if there is something particular you want me to post. ---------->

  • MSI FX5800 Ultra-TD8X or wait for NV35?

I am building a super computer and would like to purchase the MSI FX5800 Ultra-TD8X (nVIDIA GeForceFX Ti 5800 Ultra).
Problem is that they seem non-existant!?!?
How can i find this card from MSI????
    or
should I just wait for MSI's version of the NV35 (nVIDIA GeForceFX Ti 11600)? I hear its coming out mid May 2003.
    Can anyone help??

I'll say... Wait for NV35 as FX5800 Ultra has been said by alot of articles where they and me has agreed on the heating issues of FX5800 Ultra... and driver performance difference also. By the way... its a big loser to Radeon 9800 Pro and small loser to Radeon 9700 Pro and 9500 Pro, at 1st I also thought that FX5800 Ultra will be Radeon 9800 Pro biggest competitor but I'm wrong... NV35 will be up next for the competition of 9600Pro/ 9800Pro and 9900Pro by ATI Sapphire.
    All the Best... :D!!!

  • Nv vs nvidia-71xx

    Hi all,
I installed Arch 0.8 through ftp yesterday and almost everything is working out just fine on my old pc. It's a AMD 1 GHz with 256MB RAM and a GeForce256, which I used flawlessly with the nv-driver. Since I wanted to try out beryl (I know, it's a long shot to be running fluidly with that ancient card), I installed the nvidia-71xx-package and followed the instructions in the wiki. Now I have to choose:
    1. nv-driver with full resolution (1280x1024, 24bit), no DRI
    2. nvidia-71xx with up to 800x600 (even at 16bit color) and DRI.
Of course I would like to have both DRI and full res - is there anything I can do?
    Zl.
