Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT and ATI Radeon X1900 XT

I have a Mac Pro 2,1 running 10.6.1 and BootCamp.
I had a Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT video card in it and it ran well under BootCamp.
I installed a ATI Radeon X1900 XT.
Under BootCamp the 2 cards seem incompatible, with an error message that the driver on the Nvidia card has been disables due to an incompatibility with the other card.
Is there a solution for this?
If I wanted 2 cards inside would they both need to be the ATI's or Nvidia's?
Thanks

Hi I would maybe get a Apple Upgrade Kit the GT 120 is 512MB's & dose not use all 16 lanes as it like to make you think & will work on 2006 Mac Pro's at $149.00 I would say if you just want more displays get two & eBay your old cards. Please know if you game you will want more power but if only for more displays this 1 slot card is great.

I installed an ati 5870 and fcp 7 wont run, it says no vram. so I reinstalled the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT. This card however doesnt support my 46" sony bravia client monitor via vdi to hdmi (with adapter) is there anyway to make it do that (patch, driver, tweek to card)? also what other card should I get that will support the 30" apple display and the sony.  I have another system luckily thats newer that I work on with clients, but I dont want to foresake the other mac pro yet. is the 5770 going to work? Please let me know what you think, I greatly appreciate it.  Also my system profile doesnt say I have pci express 2.0 on either my old or new mac pros.
why are there no patches for this card, updates, drivers? nada. let me know. thank you.

Yes with OSX. There may be problems with Boot Camp.

  • Brandnew 8-core MacPro and ATI Radeon X1900 xt

I had this quadcore MacPro with an ATI Radeon X1900 XT and now I am switching to a newer octo-core MacPro.
I managed to install the card into the computer case. But alas, i don't see anything on my screen...
System Profiler discovers the card but gives it an generic name "Display" with Vendor ATI and DeviceID 0x7249.
But no "displays" found attached to it, which is b.s.
Please please don't tell me i cannot use this graphics card in the octo-core MacPro?!

I am surprised .... I don't have (any ideas), so I don't know for sure
You know, that doesn't help or further things and puts out false ideas that there even might. Then I'll hear "but I read somewhere something."
Apple changed the firmware on 2008. That is well known and pretty obvious, and graphic cards have to follow suit.
Nvidia doesn't seem to know or follow ATI's path of using a "hybred" (for want of better term) EFD? ROM that works across EFI32 and EFI64. Been explained over and over, or if not explained, given as cause to why.
At least we have a few years before EFI128!
    NVidia GeForce 7400 gfx card
    Now that is very elusive.
The 7300GT works only in 2006-7 Mac Pro, which were dual processor / dual or quad-core, but all used EFI32; 667MHz FBDIMM; had 1333MHz front side bus; PCIe 1.0/1.1 (but not PCIe 2.0 that came out in 2008).
And with brand new 2009, DDR3, you graphic option is really between GTX 285 and ATI HD 4870 - forget the GT120 even as a viable option for most.

  • Mac Pro Early (2008) and ATI Radeon X1900 XT

Hey, I recently got the new Mac Pro (2008), and wanted to put my old ATI Radeon X1900 XT in my new machine, however when i put it in the extra wide x16 PCIe 2.0 slot, secured it and fired up my machine, the screen remained black and the fans went constantly on full speed, i swapped over the DVI to the other graphics card, ATI Radeon HD 2600 in slot 2. In system profiler it didn't recognise the X1900 XT.
According to the apple site, a PCIe 1.1 card can be put in a 2.0 slot and vice versa, so im not quite sure why its not working!
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated .
    Chris

It appears that you can run the 1900 xt in the new Mac Pro early 2008. Rob Morgan has benchmarked the results. Apparently it works well in gaming, however, it does not offer all that much over the stock 2600 xt for Motion performance. With Motion the 1900 XT was only a few seconds faster than 2600 XT. Good luck.

  • NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 vs ATI Radeon HD 4870

i finally get to buy my mac pro and replace my aging g5 ... yay me!
anyone care to comment on the two graphics card choices ???

I would like to point out that nVidia does in fact have information on their main page about the GeForce GT 120. And yes... It is essentially a low power 9500GT. It is almost an identical card except that the Memory Clock has been locked at 500mhz and the Core GPU has been down powered to 500mhz vs 550mhz. Which goes in line with the way apple's GPUs are always slightly slower and optimized. So yes... If you want increased performance I would suggest the 4870. And yes I just looked at the site and it is indeed a 4870 listed as the 200 dollar upgrade. the 4870 is one of the better graphics cards on the market right now for the 250-300 dollar price point. As well as ATI cards seem to have a much nicer color range than nVidia cards.
Having had both recently in my PC system (A 4850 and a 9800GTX+) The ATI was certainly a nicer looking card, just not quite as good performing. Except on Crysis which actually did run better due to ATI cards tending to roll better with games that really push the texture palate as well as Filtering.
Only thing that is unfortunate is that I do not see an option for dual 4870's for Crossfire. At 2500 dollars you would think that would be a nice feature to include!!

  • IPhoto 11 and nVidia GeForce 7300 GT

    Hi folks,
I have an 2006 white iMac 24" with the nVidia GeForce 7300 GT and there is no way to use my iPhoto 11 without freezing Snow Leopard.
As I can see, everybody with nVidia GeForce 7300 GT are having the same freeze problem.
Anyone have success solving the problem? Apple don't say nothing about it?
Let's get together to Apple hear us!

Have same problem.(24" iMac with nvidia 7300GT) Read all about the very real problem on this discussion group and have done all the suggestions. Notified Apple, etc.
I had brought my iMac to an Apple Genius Bar and they spent a lot of time on it, with results being---"there is a problem" and admitting that it is not with my computer. But they could not tell me anything more (they do not know whether an iPhoto fix is in work).
As I have a large and active library, I could no longer live with this problem.
I bought Aperture. It works wonderfully. The import of my library was flawless. There is a sizeable learning curve and many things are different than iPhoto. I found that Aperture is not only extremely quick but there are a great many useful things that iPhoto does not have. I had previously used Elements for detailed adjustment, but it looks like Aperture can be used for this, and I eventually may also drop Elements.
So maybe this very frustrating problem did end up with a silver lining.

  • Kernel Panic caused by Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT after Upgrade

Kernel Panic caused by Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT after Upgrade
Mac Pro 2,66 Ghz Dual Core Intel Xeon
driving 2 Apple Cinema Displays 23 (out of order since update) and 30
running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2
    Hi I'm Phil from Germany,
and I have the same problem like many others here:  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1541589?tstart=0
caused by the Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT after combined Upgrade by Apple.
Started with frozen desktop, and ended with a permanent Kernel Panic after a reeboot.
    - Safe mode is not running
    - System CD is not running
    - Apple Hardware Test is ok.
    - tried the newest 7300 firmware update
    - I have double checked the RAM, and HDD and disconnected all external equipment several times.
System.log at startup ends with the folling permanent Problem:
    Previous Shutdown Cause:3
    NVDANV40HALG7xxx loaded and registered.
    DSMOS has arrived
After running my Mac Pro in Target Mode (Fire Wire Connection with my MacBook Pro) I found the Problem-Folder of the 7300 GT:
File:  HD/SYSTEM/LIBRARY/EXTENSIONS/NVDANV40HalG7xxx  inside my library and erased them......
NOW MY SYSTEM IS RUNNING AGAIN, but I can't run my System-CDs without a kernel panic,
Time Machine runs without the Starfleet-Background, and my second cinema display still doesn't work any more!
After spending several hours in front of my Mac Pro I'm sure that all of my hardware works fine.
NOW I THINK THE PROBLEM IS: I have to change my ROM-Version on my Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT and install the Firmware 3008.
So how does it work and where can I get this Firmware? Or how can I run an Downgrade from 3011 to 3008?
    ANY IDEAS ....or similar cases?
WOULD BE GLAD TO GET SOME HELP!!!!!

    Thanks Hatter
I'm sure that an ATI 5770 would solve my Problem...and maybe I could save a lot of my time?
But why I should spend 250 € on a new Graphic Board when the old one isn't broken?
Especially when the problem wasn't caused by me.
I need the old firmware, because my System runs with my GT 7300 after removing the software part listed above. Only one of the firmware components that had been updated won't fit in connection with the newer OS X Versions.
I'm also sure that the Problem must be on the Graphic Board, because my System-CD isn't running while pushing the "c" button.

  • ATI Radeon X1900 XT only for MacPro?

I Just noticed this this morning at Apple's Online Store ( US )
"ATI Radeon X1900 XT Graphics Upgrade Kit US$ 399.00"
I wonder if this will work in the G5 with Dual Cores ( and Quad ) PCIe ?

Ok thanks Jewell, What a Bugger eh?
X800XT for PCI-X G5's and ATI Radeon X1900 XT for MacPro's and nothing for the PCI-E last generation G5's! (unless you BTO).
I have seen your posts here about the lack of video card upgrades for the Quad, and I feel for you ... it's got to be exasperating !!
It will not unfortunately. Its to do with the way
video cards are recognised by the host system and the
    x1900 is for MacPro only.
    However.
Joe Schorr has confirmed in these forums that ATI
will be releasing a dual-core G5 edition of the x1900
(?) card which would finally make this Apple's first
video upgrade card since the dual-core G5 (quads)
were launched in October 05. Way to go Apple...
I read your repost of it.

  • ATI 4870 AND NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT together ?

hello. i have a mac pro 1.1 with the stock NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT video card. I will receive a new ATI Radeon HD 4870 card today and was wondering if it was possible to have both cards installed and if this wold provide a performance boost (ie will rendering videos utilize the power of both combined etc) . Also, i would like the option of having 3 displays . So 2 questions,
    1. can i have both cards installed at once?
    2. and if yes, will it provide benefits or problems/conflicts ?
    thanks
Mac Pro 1,1 , 5GB Ram , Latest Snow Leopard , Mac 20ish" Display, and Sony Bravia 52" as display using dvi-hdmi cable .

I've run the 4870 together with the 7300gt; there were no problems whatsoever. You'll be able to run 4 monitors, other than that there are no other benefits. This is under OSX.
Note though, if you're running windows under bootcamp, with both cards installed you will likely run into driver conflicts. Best to keep to the same "clan" (ATI or Nvidia) when booting in windows.

  • NVIDIA GeForce 120 or ATI Radeon X1900... which is better?

    Hi-
I currently have the ATI Radeon X1900 graphics card installed in my Mac Pro 2.26 Nehalem. I'm not having any issue's with the card except that the fans turn On quite frequently, and they're a little loud.
I'm not using it for any games, etc... My primary use is with Pro Tools (a music DAW application).
The ATI Radeon X1900 is running a Apple 30" display and a Sony Bravia 46" LCD.
If I replaced the ATI Radeon X1900 with a NVIDIA GeForce 120, would I be asking for trouble?
    Thanks in advance.

If I replaced the ATI Radeon X1900 with a NVIDIA GeForce 120, would I be asking for trouble?
If your Mac Pro came with ATI Radeon X1900, then it needs a card with EFI-32 firmware. The NVIDIA GeForce 120 has EFI-64 firmware, and won't work in the pre 2008 Mac Pro. The only upgrade for early Mac Pros is the ATI Radeon HD 4870

  • Running ATI Radeon x1900 XT along with NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT Possible?

Can I run the ATI Radeon x1900 XT along with NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT together in my mac pro?

The X1900 would have to go in double wide slot, you would have to run one or both at 8x.
I think something like ATI 2600 might make more sense. The 8800GT is listed as discontinued (have a thread or two about it being EOL). So unless you have the 8800GT may not be an option anyway.
The 4870 + 2600 combo would be best I can think of for us with 1st gen now.
This assumes you simply need to drive 3 monitors. And don't want to wait and see if the Nvidia eVGA GTX 285 (doubtful) will support 1st gen EFI32's.

  • Upgrade MacPro1,1 with ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB and Open GL 1.7.7. to recommended system requirements for heli simulator: OpenGL Version 2.1 compatible 3D-graphics card from NVIDIA or ATI with 512MB.

I want to install a helicopter simulator into my MacPro1,1 with ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512 MB and Open GL 1.7.7. Recommended system requirements for the heli simulator are: OpenGL Version 2.1 compatible 3D-graphics card from NVIDIA or ATI with 512MB (at least as fast as NVIDIA 8600, 9400 or ATI Radeon HD 2400). Is there such a graphics card available that will work in my Mac Pro?

Are you really still running 10.6.3? you will need 10.6.5+ so do that and make a clone.
ATI 5770 from Apple Store - like 1000s of others have done and in the comments section on the store page.

  • ATI Radeon X1900 worth it for only FCP and Color?

    Hello,
I've been looking around these posts for a while and I can't seem to find this specific answer, so I apologize if my question has been asked already.
I am looking to purchase a MacPro tower. I don't use Motion. I don't play video games. I don't need 8 zillion giant monitors. I intend to use the computer mainly for Final Cut Pro 6.0 and probably a fair amount of Color as well.
With this being the case, what are the benefits of the
ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB Graphics Card, over the
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB Graphics Card? Is it really worth the money? I've seen some posts that say you won't see a difference in FCP, but is this also true for Color? And if so, what exactly will the difference be?
    Thanks,

Here's what they said at the Color board...
With anything less than an ATI x1900...you may experience issues such as lack of realtime playback, missing support for 10-bit images and 2K frame sizes, no float support for your grade settings.
For this version of Color, ATI is the way to go. I wouldn't go so far as to say an Nvidia card gives you a crippled version of the program, but it's close.

  • ATI Radeon X1900 vs Nvidia Ge Force 6600

I predominantly edit video, create graphics using Adobe CS2 and animate and composite using After Effects.
I currently have a Nvidia GeForce 6600, and I was wondering if the ATI Radeon X1900 will be a significant upgrade. Has anyone used both of these cards and noticed one was better than the other?
Also in system profiler the GeForce 6600 is listed as a PCI card, so this should mean that I can install the ATI Radeon X1900 G5 Mac Edition?
    thanks.

Adding additional RAM will definitely help. AE7 and higher can address up to 3 GB of RAM by itself, and this is directly related to the length of the RAM preview you can do.
If you're doing a RAM preview (or a render) in AE, open up Activity Monitor located in /Applications/Utilities. What you'll notice is that most of your CPU is not being used effectively. Nucleo & Nucleo Pro launch background instances of AE and this causes your CPUs to be fully utilized, hence the reduction in time needed to do a RAM preview or a render.
One of my favorite features is the Speculative Preview that does RAM previews in the background without the user having to invoke them. It automatically RAM previews your work area, and if you make a change to something, it throws out the frames that need to be updated and immediately starts RAM previewing the new frames. So, by the time you're ready to preview your work area, it's probably already been rendered!
The background renderer is also great. You put a composition into the render queue and Nucleo Pro starts rendering it in the background. This means that you can go back into AE and keep working on something else rather than having to wait until AE finishes rendering what's in the queue.
Take a look at the product overview in the link in my previous post so you can see if it's right for you. There's also a demo version that watermarks everything so you can get a feel for how it'll fit into your workflow.
If you decide that you don't need all the features that Nucleo Pro has, you can get the standard Nucleo which does RAM previews only for AE 7 and 6.5. If you're upgrading to AE CS3, this basic functionality is built-in, so you won't need Nucleo at all except for the additional features that Nucleo Pro offers.
In GPU accelerated programs like Motion, the memory on the video card can matter. Each element is treated as a texture and has to fit in the video card's onboard memory for best performance. If you have many elements that you're working with, it's conceivable that you'd fill up the card's memory and hurt performance. For a G5, the only available 512MB card is nVidia's QuadroFX 4500 which is incredibly expensive. It was only available as an option at the time the computer was built, so to get one now means you have to get it as a replacement part, and that'll set you back ~$1,500. Not worth it, in all but extreme cases.
