Correct rom for Geforce 7800 GTX for Mac G5?
I just got my hands on a Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTX 512 and would like to flash it to work on my Quad G5. I know it is floaing around out there somewhere in our Ether-Space. Would some kind soul please share? Thanks
I recently acquired a Late 2005 PowerMac G5 2.3 Dual Core. It came with the sluggish GeForce 6600. I too am interested in flashing a 7800 GTX with a ROM for Mac.
Will any brand 7800 GTX qualify? I understand there may be a problem with cards having different ROM sizes. Could anyone list specific brand cards they would recommend for this purpose? I know I shouldn't expect to find any new ones. I will look in all the usual places.
Also, is it important to get the GTX and not the GT?
Thanks. -
Geforce 7800 gtx card in my mac ?
Hi,
to troubleshoot a display problem with my MacG5, ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1121100&tstart=0 ) I would like to install a second graphic card in it. I have a PC Nvidia Geforce 7800 gtx card. Can I install this without any problem in my Mac ?
Do I have to modify anything (flash the card ROM) to make this work ?
Any info on this would be much appreciated.
Thanks.
Guillaume.No...the card won't work. Unless you can flash it to work in a Mac. That's no easy task.

GeForce 7800 GTX... the best card for a PCIe G5 Power Mac?
I have started out on the rocky road to upgrade the graphics card on my Power Mac G5 Quad 2.5GHz running Mac OS X 10.5.8. The standard card, a GeForce 6600, does not do justice to this wonderful computer, and struggles with any serious video work.
The first step is easy – deciding on the best card. A little Googling shows that the GeForce 7800 GTX wins hands down over the competition.
The next needs patience – these cards appear from time to time on eBay; I will need a 512 MB PCI-e version (not 256 MB) as I am running 10.5.
I've waited a month or two, put in a winning bid and the card has arrived. Now all I need is the code to flash the ROM to make it work in myG5. Not so fast! I'll need a 128kb ROM chip! The idea of using a soldering iron terrifies me, so I'll have to find someone, who does this sort of thing for a living, to remove the 64kb ROM from my 7800 GTX and solder on a 128kb ROM.
But what's is the right spec/manufacturer/supplier for the 128 kb ROM?
If I am lucky my friend with the soldering iron may know. If not, I'm stuck. I've not been able to find this information anywhere on the Internet.
Now all I need is the right code for the ROM. It seems that there are two versions that people have used: one, which seems quite common, is lightly edited Quadro FX 4500 ROM code which does not use the full power of the 7800 GTX, which after flashing reports itself as a FX 4500; the other, which seems to be as rare as gold dust, has been fine-tuned to use the 7800 GTXs full potential. Cards flashed with this version report correctly as 7800 GTX. I really want this optimised code, but neither version is available from any of the usual places.
Can anyone please help?I've waited a month or two, put in a winning bid and the card has arrived. Now all I need is the code to flash the ROM to make it work in my G5. Not so fast! I'll need a 128kb ROM chip! The idea of using a soldering iron terrifies me, so I'll have to find someone, who does this sort of thing for a living, to remove the 64kb ROM from my 7800 GTX and solder on a 128kb ROM.
Many thanks to japamac, who kindly sent me an e-mail which put me on the right track re finding the ROM code, editing it and flashing.
I also now know that I no longer have to worry about soldering ROM chips. Yippee! The 7800 GTX code has been 'shrunk' to fit on a 64kb ROM. -
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M (256 mb) vs NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT (512 mb)
Hi, new here, but ive been wondering for quite a while now which one, in terms of processing power (playing games, video editing, etc) would be better?
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M (256 mb) or the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT (512 mb)
the 8600M being on the previous system, and the 330M on the new one, if I were to get the new one with 256 video memory, would it still be better than the 8600M with 512mb vram that I currently have?
Thanks.Hi so does this mean that the 330, even at 256mb will be faster right? Thanks.

MSI Geforce 7800 GTX with MSI Nvidia GeForce 7800GT in SLI?
Hi. I bought the MSI Nvidia GeForce 7800GT a few months ago with the intention of buying a second to run in SLI. Now i can't seem to find anywhere that sells it at a decent price. Originally i bought it from www.ebuyer.co.uk but they have discontinued it.
Could i buy a MSI Geforce 7800 GTX and run it in SLI? They should have the same gpu and the specs aren't that different.Quote from: BG84 on 12-August-06, 23:42:56

PowerMac G5 Quad GeForce 7800 GTX 512mb or Quadro 4500 FX
Hey, best regards for all users. I have a question about changing graphics card. I'll be gratefull for all help.
I have PowerMac G5 Quad Late 2005 - M9592LL/A and OS X Leopard 10.5.8.
My card is GeForce 7800GTX 512MB and Quadro fx4500 model p348.
I'm looking for ROM for this cards for Mac G5. I want to change 6600 for 7800GTX 512MB or Quadro. Cards tested on PC are working.
Anyone can help ? I can't find any info about ROM for this cards.
Thanks all !Both the X1900 (R580) and the 7800 GTX (G70) are capable GPUs on advanced cards, both targeting and supporting Shader Model 3.0. 3D was a focal point in development for either card.
Approaches for shader implementation are very different between the two cards.
Arguements for either abound, but, 3D performance will be a defining factor to show shader prowess.
Architecturally, the cards are very different, but, in the end, memory bandwidth, an important performance feature, is highest with the 7800 GTX; 54.4 GB/s vs. 38 GB/s for the Mac Edition Radeon.
The next X19xx card, the X1950, almost doubled memory bandwidth over the X1900.
I know guys that use flashed X1950 (512 MB) cards really like them.
Support of DirectX 9 and Shader Model 3.0 make either card more than is necessary for OS X Core Image and OpenGL requirements.
You bring up a very important point regarding application specific performance.
Games are one form of benchmark, but not always indicative of real world performance.
In Photoshop, CS4, the 7800 GTX is a fully supported card, whereas the X1900 (256 MB) card is not supported. The 512 MB version of the X1900 is supported, but doesn't help owners of the Mac Edition.
There are pros and cons with either card, eventually driver and OpenGL support being the defining point.
Early driver issues with the X1900 in OS X and a relatively short retail availability likely affect the lack of empirical data on the cards performance.
The following, though comparing a X1900XT (not the little brother X1900GT which is the G5 version) with a Geforce 7800 GTX on platforms other than Mac, the comparisons do show pro oriented application performance.
Though not necessarily applicable to OS X and PPC Macs, I thought it to be an interesting set of tests.
http://ixbtlabs.com/articles2/cpu/nvidia-vs-ati-on-amd-and-intel.html
Either card is great, either is way better than the 6600, and, as you point out, availability is an important factor. -

*THANKS !!!*According to your G5 specification the ATI Radeon 9800 XT with 256MB of DDR SDRAM will work.
+(Notice that there are few models of 9800 i.e.: 9800 64MB, 9800 128MB, 9800 Pro Mac Edition, and some of them are for the older computers)+
But the fastest card for your computer is Nvidia 6800 Ultra DDL or ATI X800XT.
The ATI you can find here:

6800, usually is much more expensive and not easy to find.

On Mountain Lion :
It happens to turn of my monitor in different situations. Sometimes i believe i have my graphic video broken ! In my town i don't have Apple doctors so i dont risk to go to a service non authorized from apple !
For example there was a day when it turns off when a simply pinch with thumb and 3 fingers for launchbad ...and the opperating sistem it should be restart from power button ! That was when i had Mountain lion 10.7.5 update
Other situation was with photoshop cs6, cs5, cs4 30 days trial versions ...i couldn't buy any versions so i decided to test a earlier versions that can match with my sistem requirements. In all of this three situations my display had turned off after opening a image or photo or 3d graphics in photoshop...anyway sadness.
Other situation : One day i was simply relaxing surfing facebook and ...than i've just simply open an advertising link ...and on that page i was waiting to load a video that used another player than flash player of youtube. Even two seconds didn't stayed open and trust me it turned off my display once again !
After Mountain Lion :
I told my story to to someone who holds an MacBook Pro i5 etc. and he told me to test the new mavericks maybe it's something broken in my operating system.... and believe me after 2 days of happiness with OS X MAVERICKS , last night my computer restarted because of a problem, and 2 hours ago again....why ? i don't know ! Maybe Video RAM or maybe Memory RAM or Maybe simple conflicts between Trial Photoshop and OS X or maybe my macbook it's 2 old...or i don't know ....for how much i used this mac it should run as an mustang ! MacBook Pro i7 Mid 2010 HDD 500 , 4 GB of DDR 3 , Intel built in Graphic 288 and an NVIDIA GE FORCE 512 , 15 inch display monitor , 283 real cicle counts ( my mac was used as an iphone while charging and using battery) ...i don't know what to do ! Please help !
The Operating System shoes me everytime this error !

Thunderbolt Bus:Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff
dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…
Good luck,

Geforce 7800 gtx power plug?
im getting a geforce 7800 gtx and it comes with i guess its a power cord where do i plug it into my late 05 dual core 2.0 g5? i know the card goes into the pcie slot but what about the little cord so it gets it power?
thanks
rogerHi-
Welcome to Discussions!
In the Late 2005 models, there is a 6 pin power connection for graphics card power. The connector is located along the top edge of the logic board, above the RAM slots, Shown Here.
The cable needed is like these:

PC users can now get a souped up GeForce 7800 GTX with 512MB of DDR3:

I wish Apple would offer that same card with Apple firmware for the Dual-Core G5s.Amen to that. Cheers on your great site, too!

2 MSI Geforce 7800 GTX Duds?!?!
I just bought two MSI Geforce 7800 GTX's and both seem to be faulty.
I've tried them in single mode, SLI mode, and on multiple computers
Both computers are MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum / SLI
2 GB Corsair RAM at 3 3 3 8 1T
One is an AMD Athlon 60 3000+
The other is AMD Athlong 64 FX-55
Both cards freeze on starting up windows right before the Windows XP PRofessional Loading screen. This occurs in SLI and in non-SLI mode running one card, as well as running on two diferent motherboards
Not only does it freeze when starting up windows but when trying to do a windows install as well freezes on the "starting up windows" portion when i tried to reformat
I have tried updating the BIOS for the MSI boards, it did nothing.
This was an upgrade from two MSI 6800 GT's
Should I return the pieces to the retailer?
Thanks =/

Way to stop NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT graphics card from running?
I have 2 graphics cards in my Power Mac G5, one is a NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT graphics card which i believe came with it, the other is a NVIDIA GeForce 6600. The problem I have is that the NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT card makes a horrible fan noise, and I am looking for a way to unplug it, or cut it off from the power supply safely. Any advise is welcome.
Here is a sample video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkMGFyB8wig&feature=related
Keep in mind that video cards have an extra tab at the tail end so don't forget to gently push the tab to the side.
The video card fans typically plug into power pins on the video card so removal of the card will expose the connection. Otherwise, just follow the fan power leads. -
K8N Neo3 with a GeForce 7800 GTX?
Hello, I got a AMD64 3200 (socket 754) processor with a K8N Neo Platinum motherboard.
I want to upgrade my videocard and I am thinking of a GeForce 7800 GTX. Because of the futurure I want a pci-e card, so I am thinking of changing my motherboard to a K8N Neo3 motherboard. I searched everywhere online (including this forum and the msi site) but I can't find if this motherboard is compatible with a GeForce 7800 GTX. Can anyone provide me with the answer? Thanks.Quote from: Luke51087123 on 25-August-05, 08:51:29
neo 3?? thought there was only 2 and 4. Im prob wrong but the nforce 4 chipset is the only one for pciE
I think you are right about the nforce 4, but the K8N Neo3 got the nforce 4. Here is the link:

I have Windows XP Pro 32-Bit... But as far as I know it does not have Service Pack 2 (SP2)... The Boot Camp instructions say you need at least SP2 to install boot camp and you can't install XP and then update to SP2... Is there a way around this?
